Joey Votto is 12th in the majors in RBI. He’s not anywhere near the 12th-most productive hitter in the majors. He’s not anywhere near the 5th-most productive hitter in the majors. He’s the most productive hitter and it’s not all that close. His performance with runners on, with runners in scoring position, with runners on third is even better than his overall numbers.
Can any of you who think we should pay any attention at all to RBI explain that one?
That’s funny that Chipper says it’s gonna take some time to get back in the groove because he’s been away so long but yet he didn’t need or want any rehab games because he supposedly didn’t need them!!!!
It would be good to have an All Bloated Player Team…Francisco could be there, Sabathia, P. Fielder…well, that’s not fair…because Francisco is NOT a player. (Havana Fats: manager)
I think you just pretend to be sad when BigMac screws up. You’re always over it in 2 minutes time.
That’s a front!… Nah, I am better about that then I used to be—I mean, when I’m around people, I try not to act too upset. A few years ago, I would let it effect my real life to a certain extent, but not so much anymore. Sometimes I slip, though…
Great, Jerry started all the crap about Uggla’s AVG and one guy i woulda like to sic on him is here and Jerry is nowhere to be found and we have to get the 10000001th dose of the same points repeated once more.
Hopefully Hanson can get out of Yankee Stadium alive today. Looks like it’s a fun day to hit with the hot tempatures.
He’s been smart. First-pitch fastballs, ’cause he knows these guys like to take a pitch or two; then wrinkles, wrinkles, wrinkles. Slider’s pretty awesome today.
He threw a 3-1 fastball to a fastball hitter and Chavez put it in the takeoff pattern. Really, the only mistake and the only time he really got away from his gameplan.
OK, I’ve made my decision now, going over FG’s empty head. It will be Durbin for the next two innings and then Kimbrel for the last two to secure the win. No ifs, ands, or buts! Somebody pass that on to Mr. G please!
yuck. I just can’t live in that kind of heat But yeah, we get the marine layer, especially this time of year- has been very foggy in the mornings and later evenings lately
Just don’t see Bourn getting signed by the Bravos even though it would be the right thing to do. They will go second tier and get Coco Crisp or swing a trade for Lorenzo Cain in KC
McFann, you started Shaun on a one-person argument against using RBI to measure value. But I refuse to listen. I will continue to assign value to players by RBI, number of Strikeouts, and most importantly, Plate Appearances.
If the “it factor” is a professional athletes paycheck. I would put my life on the fact that if Tommy is not in the majors, his gf would not give him a second of her time
Love Sutton’s explanation of Mikey’s catch – when he was a kid, most people don’t know this, Bourn was bitten by a radioactive spider. Ever since, he’s been able to climb the walls like that !
And Chip said Chipper’s getting today off was “part of a plan” to get Chipper two days off. If it was the plan all along, why did Fredi say—Aaaaah, ferget it…
Wonder if Jason is thinking about that catch he didn’t take away in, was it Cincy? If Bourn with his short self can get to that, Jason should have been able to.
I know, cab, you’ll disagree with me on that. We were on opposing sides of that argument, but it’s all good now
Ya know, I admit I didn’t really like Durbin at the beginning of the season. But he’s grown on me and now I don’t mind him so much. He’s actually done a pretty good job!
MikeInFl, why not? Isn’t it the way many want to do it? Assign value and judge players’ skills on the basis of picking out some random statistics, without regard to whether they are measuring things that lead to creating and preventing runs? Baseball isn’t about scoring more runs and preventing more runs than your opponent. It’s a beauty contest, about which players have the prettiest batting averages or RBI totals.
BG4Life — Jason is probably thinking of that catch…but likely the reason Bourn can get up so much higher to make that catch is that there is so much less of him to get off the ground than Jason.
I believed Durbin worked last night and he may not want to overwork him.
Right now Durbin and Medlen are his only dependable RH middle relievers. I think he scared to death to put CMart in there but may have to if we get another run or two.

No Shaun, I don’t think that’s how “many want to do it.” One guy, who is upset that Dan Uggla is not as good a hitter as Joey Votto, uses batting average as a measure. Okay, he’s unenlightened. Probably doesn’t spend 6 hours a day studying baseball.
But really, I think it’s safe to say that the vast majority of us here fully understand that rbi are context dependent. But you keep lecturing. I don’t mind. It’s just kind of bizarre.
