Bermuda is too prickly and turns brown in the late Fall…and then it flies everywhere when you’re trying to rake…gets stuck to your shoes…drags through the house…

But I’ve never mowed a lawn in my life, so that’s prolly why I cann like Fescue so much… ;)

I hate Bermuda as well. We’re required to have it in your yard by our ***** HOA though. AAAARRRGHHHHH!!!!

It’s fine in the summer, but dries to sticks in the winter. Hates the shade too, and though we only have 3 trees , but they do shade quite a bit of the yard…

I just read a PLAYERS poll on Sports Illustrated .com (si.com) Major league players rated the top 15 throwing catchers in the big leagues, that’s half of all big league teams.

Know where Mac rated? He didn’t. Yadier Molina rated #1

That has been my whole Mac argument. Without offense, Mac is no more than an average catcher. If Simmons doesn’t hit at SS, he will still help you win games. If Yadier Molina doesn’t hit, he will still help you win games. If Mac doesn’t hit, I don’t think he helps you win games. Outside of Smoltz, some of the Atlanta staff and coaches, and the Braves PR machine, I have never heard any Atlanta outsider brag on Mac’s defensive and game calling abilities.

Mac seems like a really nice guy. He’s obviously respected by others around the league as a good guy. As long as he wears the cap with the “A” on it, I will root for him. He’s a good hitter, (for a catcher) but if he doesn’t hit, he has little value. Trade him while he still has value.

Business decision time.

While I agree with a lot of your first paragraph, I disagree with the statement “Folks in Atlanta are tired of losing, period.” The attendance for the Braves began decreasing LONG before they stopped making the postseason every year. — RC

Exactly right. And people bend themselves into pretzels trying to explain that away, as though Atlantans live in some alternate America with a different economy, worse traffic (than L.A., for instance?) and different school schedule (no other team I know of has the disparity in attendance when school is in session and when it’s not). — DOB

First of all, I think the attendance stuff is overblown and overemphasized by the national media and some in the Atlanta media. I’m not saying the decline in attendance isn’t real (of course it is) but some in the media tend to emphasize it and make it a much bigger story than it actually is. (I’m not saying most of us here think this way. I think most of us realize that all this is overblown a bit.)

It seems the Braves’ attendance started to decline with the perception that the Braves were no longer the NL powerhouse and the novelty of them as a NL powerhouse started to wear off.

I think around the time when they lost the 1999 World Series and then when they got swept out of the 2000 playoffs in the first round, the perception grew that other NL teams had caught up and that they no longer were an extremely good bet to make the Series. Throw in that Atlanta folks didn’t grow up with their fathers and grandfathers passing Braves fandom down, because the Braves are a fairly new franchise to Atlanta, and you get a decrease in attendance when the perception of them as a dynasty starts to wear off. At least that’s my theory.

Most fans don’t have time to really get in to it and worry about the fact that the Braves organization is solid, even if it’s not an extremely legit World Series contender every single season. The only teams that will remain on the top in attendance consistently for 15-20 years are ones with absolutely everything going right: Competitiveness, a unique and interesting and perhaps old ballpark, the tradition of fathers and grandfathers passing along the fandom, etc.

If the Braves’ attendance falls to near rock-bottom or if they reach the NLCS or World Series and play well and attendance remains in the middle of the pack, then we should be concerned. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s all that big a story. I’m not saying it isn’t preferable for the Braves to finish top 3 or 4 every season in attendance. Just that the attendance drop over the last decade or so isn’t something to focus a lot of attention on.

Jekyll and Hyde

I listen to most Braves games on XM radio as I am traveling quite a bit. Also listen to a lot of MLB on XM.

Numerous times I have heard baseball people speak glowingly of Mac’s overall game. Of course nobody talks about him having a great arm, because he doesn’t. But they speak highly of his game calling and overall catching defense.

Now maybe that means that a lot of other catchers suck, but I read it as we have a pretty darned good catcher.

I will never understand the Mac hate on the blog. Kinda like the Braves hate after 2 consecutive loses?

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad interleague play is a weekend away from being over. It’s been a rugged path for the Braves, who have played the most difficult interleague schedule in the major leagues (total opp. win percentage of .565). At least the Mets and Nationals are right up there with the Braves, very close. The problem is that potential wild card contenders from the Central and West got much easier schedules. But you gotta beat who you play.

The AL has absolutely worn the NL out, by a 120-90 margin. Ouch.

A visible example of the potential impact of interleague schedules can be found over in the American League. The Angels had a stellar 10-5 record in interleague play, shooting up toward the top of the AL wild card standings, while playing the second-easiest IL schedule in the majors. Meanwhile, Tampa, now a half-game ahead of the Angels, went 7-8 against the 3rd-toughest IL schedule in the American League.

Shaun, i think its interesting to look at when the Braves’ attendance increased, in ‘05 and ‘06 it went back up to 2.5 mil. then in ‘07, after losing the division for the first time in 14 year the previous year, it went UP to 2.7 mil.

Braves attendance doesnt seem to be directly tied with the success of the team. i dont really know how to explain it, but drawing 2.5 mil per season is something to be happy about, in my opinion. thats been about the average of what we have done for a decade. if we could draw 3mil, that would be excellent.

DAP, I look more at rankings than the raw total because there may be seasons when all of baseball does or doesn’t draw so well, which could affect the totals, perhaps because of weather or all sorts of extraneous factors. But with rankings, we can obviously compare their attendance to the rest of the league’s.

The rankings really took a dip in 2001, after being swept in the first round in 2000, the first time they failed to make at least the NLCS since 1990 (in years in which there was a postseason, of course).

They made it back to the NLCS in 2001 but the attendance didn’t bounce back at all in 2002. I think a lot of that was because they won only 88 games in 2001 and I suspect the perception was that the NLCS appearance was somewhat of a fluke and that they really didn’t have a chance to win it against the D-Backs and Schilling and Johnson. Of course most of us who go to at least 5-6 games a season understand that the postseason in general is largely a fluke so we aren’t prone to being fanatical about the team because of our perceptions of whether they have a good shot to go deep in the playoffs. But most fans who understandably don’t want to spend their hard-earned money for 5-6 games because they aren’t diehard fans, don’t think like us when the team doesn’t seem like a legit World Series contender.

Obviously this is all just my theories which I think seem at least somewhat reasonable. I think there are just so many factors with attendance that it’s hard to know a lot of about what influences attendance. I mean, there’s the obvious, which is winning. But aside from that, there’s really not much certainty. I think perception of the team has a lot to do with it but it’s hard to measure perception in some sort of firm, quantifiable way because perception is more than just record from the previous season(s). It’s very subjective.
