not sure we have as much to spend as some are lead to believe.
That’s true. With Chipper’s $13M, Lowes $10M, Bourn’s $7M, Jair’s $5.5M, EOF’s $2.5M, Diaz’s ~$1M, Hinske’s $1.5M, Wilson’s $1M, Durbin’s $0.9M, and Livan’s $0.75M (total $43M) coming off the books, and then raises to players, coupled with the annual “increase in salary” the Braves will only have about $1M to $2M to fill needs in CF, LF and bullpen. It’ll be real tight this coming off-season. The team should probably trade its remaining best players while they still have value so as to acquire good young minor leaguers.
efrim I think all in all, the 10 players that we will presumably have under contract next year will run us between 55-60 million(Uggla, McCann, Hudson, Prado, O’Flaherty, Hanson, Heyward, Venters, Medlen, and Martinez).
i wouldnt be too sure about o’flarety. he might be making a bit too much for a middle reliever. could be traded.
Giants, D-Backs, Cardinals, Mets, Marlins, and yes Phillies. These are the teams you should keep daily interest on right now regarding competition for the Braves to make the playoffs. Unless FW pulls a steal again and lands someone like Dempster, these Braves are good enough to make the playoffs. As a wildcard team. The Nats have staying power and IMO they will win this division. Their pitching from top to bottom just is too much for the Braves to overcome as division leaders. They have just enough hitting that will sustain them and win a close division race. They are not going to have a nice season and fade away, they are legit. Harper being called up was instrumental and infused that club with confidence that has gets stronger daily. Werth goes out, Zimmerman on the DL and that guy did the impossible of giving them attitude and instilling a winning belief. I don’t care if he ends up hitting .250 the remainder of the year, he is a huge reason where they are right now.
With that said, the Braves are a solid team regardless of how the first 3 months have played out. Like the others, if they stay healthy, good things will happen regardless of the Beachy situation. IMO, they get in as one of the wildcard teams barely. The other being either D Backs or Giants from the West or the Cardinals. Mets will continue to improve but that will be the team that slides late in this division, not the Nationals. Marlins can’t count out but a team I see with huge talent and a Tin Man’s heart. Phillies always lurking but too much is going on and this suspension last week, just another obstacle in a reallly difficult season.
Yeah, half my yard is dirt. I’ve been saving up and looking at landscapers to get an idea of what to do, but the last place I talked to said there was a $5000 minimum.
Big few starts here for Jair before the break. Him, and the Braves. If he can pitch well – then they may think twice about going out and getting a starter. If he stinks up the joint, they are definitely going to acquire a starter.
Or if he stinks it up, they get a RP and move Medlen into the pen…. I still think we’re more likely to go for a starter though, so I do agree with you.
Mac has been without a doubt one of the best offensive catchers in baseball the past few years. But even though his numbers as a catcher have been impressive, they aren’t numbers that will land him in the top offensive categories of ALL players year after year. Move Mac. Pick up a corner outfielder who can match his offensive numbers through trade or FA. It doesn’t matter where the offense comes from as long as it comes.
While I don’t think we need to or should trade Mac, I can understand your point. As long as we have someone capable at the catcher position, I don’t mind if they’re gonna be a Silver Slugger or not. We can find offense at other positions. I mean, look at Uggla. He’s our power guy and he plays 2nd base. Martin produces more natural numbers for 2B but yet he plays LF…. it all balances out.
It’ll be real tight this coming off-season. The team should probably trade its remaining best players while they still have value so as to acquire good young minor leaguers.
Hah! I think EOF is going to stick around at around 3.5 million. Like I said, 55-60 million for 10 players – Uggla, McCann, Hudson, Prado, O’Flaherty, Heyward, Hanson, Venters, Medlen and Martinez. They’ll have money to work with, but I don’t see them handing Josh Hamilton or Cole Hamels 25 million a year…..
JJ is walking into a lion’s den tonight. The fan in me is hoping he can through 6 giving up 3 or 4 runs, but the realist saying he get’s lit up for 3 or 4 bombs. This could get ugly quick.
I’m still guessing the Braves choose to pick up McCann’s option for ‘13. I think management will see how McCann’s health holds up and how he produces through much of ‘13 before deciding on a contract offer.
I’d be very surprised if the Braves traded McCann unless it’s obvious that either McCann and the Braves aren’t going to come to terms in ‘13.

Holy hell, of course they are. You can’t base the guy on 70 games, or even 90 games stretching back to September 1st. He’s still better than most catchers in the sport and is easily worth the 12 million.

they wouldnt need to non tender him. he is good enough that someone will want him, just not sure the braves want to nearly double his salary to pitch the 7th inning.

I don’t see that anyway. Hamilton is getting up there in the years. This isn’t the late 90’s early 00’s. Players don’t get better and better after their 30th birthday.
Hamels… I don’t see them in on any player commanding a massive deal, though I would think Hamels is closer to a possibility than Hamilton in the line of impossibilities.

I wouldn’t be against moving EOF by this year’s trading deadline if we could use him as an addition in a trade to improve us for the future. We have quite a few options in the pen, but it would all depend on the circumstance.

Zoysia looks nice.
Fescue’s great and all but it feels like the grass is a foot tall the day after the lawn is mowed.

Zoysia is definitely nice, but Bermuda is quite easily the best all-round choice for maintenance purposes.

Yeah, but grows very well in the shade…which means alot of trees in your yard and not as hot, which would suit me just fine…

Not so, Bermuda is almost classified as a weed, as it is very invasive…and just does not tolerate shade at all…

DOWN ON THE DAEM
DSL
To finish off our sweep of the minor’sd play from yesterday, the BLUE JAYS destroy the BSL-BRAVES 11-3.
3B JOHAN CAMARGO [.333 BA] 1-2, 1 2B [1], 1 BB, 1 SO.
DH VICTOR REYES [.293 BA] 1-3, 1 SO, 1 SB [3].
CF JOSE MORAL [.205 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B [2].
C ALEX De La CRUZ [.265 BA] 1-2, 1 R.
LF IOSIF BERNAL [.265 BA] 2-3, 1 2B [4], 2 RBI [8], 1 SO.
RHSP RICHARD PAULINO [L 1-1, 10.80 ERA] 1.1 IP, 2 H, 6 R/ER, 2 BB.
RHRP VICK CONSTANZO [12.27 ERA] 2.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO. Sux! VICK allows all three inherited runners to score. Sux!
RHRP AHMED CABALLERO [5.06 ERA] 2.0 IP, 4 H, zeros, 1 SO.
AHMED gives up four base knocks, but scatters them, and combined with zero walks, he puts out the fire started by the previous ” pitchers.”
RHRP ENRIQUE MEDINA [0.00 ERA] 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 SO. Nice close.
And that’s a wrap for June 21.

DOB,I agree with what you said about players taking significantly more money via free agency. That’s why I was annoyed by people who criticized Glavine for signing with the Mets. If someone in another state offered me significantly more money for a similar position, I would accept that if my wife agreed to the move.

And into flower beds and borders. Almost anywhere you want or don’t want it. With roots three feet deep, it’s almost impossible to kill with Round-up. You must apply to the affected area three years hand-running to rid yourself of the pesky stuff. Needless to say, everything you do want is dead too!
