I think J.J. for Garza is good deal with a player to be named later. It’s not going to take that much.
Wow, really? Theo and Jed Hoyer are trying to rebuild the team, not just dump salary. It’s not the Uggla trade redone. It’s gonna cost some prospects. They’re trying to get some impact prospects to rebuild the team. Unfortunately, I don’t think we match up well for Garza/Dempster/Greinke. All of those guys will require top prospects in return, which we don’t have to give up. We’re not a deep team on the farm.
We’ve got Delgado, Minor, Teheran, Gilmartin, Medlen as our big 5 pitchers. Delgado and Teheran are untouchables, Medlen is in the pen and likely untouchable, leaving Minor and Gilmartin. Both of those guys don’t project as high ceiling guys. Other than that, we have “crap” in our farm system. Sorry to burst this bubble, but I’m not thinking we get Garza/Dempster unless FW gives up one of his big pitching prospects (something he never does, and is this case shouldn’t do)

Christian Bethancourt, C, Atlanta Braves (Double-A Mississippi): He has raw power, but I’m including him here because of his defense. He’s one of the best-throwing catchers in organized baseball, and I’d love to see him get a chance to try to throw out Billy Hamilton at second.
I get excited about Bethancourt whenever I read something like this. But then I remember that he just hasn’t hit at all yet. Of course, he is just 20 years old and in Double-A, which is extremely young for the level. However, you have to hit a little more than he has and not just show off your raw power in batting practice and that’s it.
Even Yadier Molina hit a little his first three years in the bigs, ages 21-23: .238/.291/.342(1,033 Plate Appearances) – I’m honestly not sure Bethancourt will be able to do that. Defensively, he sounds like he’s Molina behind the plate with his arm and blocking ability.
Nice to dream on a up-the-middle of Bethancourt, Simmons and Lipka – but man, that’s gonna put some added stress on the corners to produce with the bats.

Music to my ears. What if Bethancourt develops along the lines of Charles Johnson? Super defensive catcher with a light bat? A-okay if the Braves can find the offense to compensate elsewhere in the lineup, I believe.
Well, Molina is certainly hitting now, so maybe it is just a tad early to judge the 20 year old?
Pretty sure that’s why you’ll continue to see Bethancourt on Top 100 prospects lists. Or at least, within the top 100-120 range. Still incredibly young but so skilled with the glove.
TheOnlyBravesFan, Bethancourt still may prove to have a good bat. Though Bethancourt hasn’t exactly sizzled offensively at Mississippi, there’s still a whole lot of season left there, so there’s time for Bethancourt to up his hitting.
And I presume that the Braves will exercise McCann’s option for ‘13 and that Bethancourt catches at Gwinnett next season, giving him yet more time to develop and management the time to better evaluate Bethancourt’s major league bona fides.
We’ve got Delgado, Minor, Teheran, Gilmartin, Medlen as our big 5 pitchers. Delgado and Teheran are untouchables, Medlen is in the pen and likely untouchable, leaving Minor and Gilmartin. He’ll repeat Double-A. You can’t hit like he has and expect a promotion. He hit his way out of Lynchburg – even though it was a fairly empty line. He’ll have to show something in the first half next year if he wants to see Gwinnett.
TheOnlyBravesFan, Bethancourt still may prove to have a good bat. Though Bethancourt hasn’t exactly sizzled offensively at Mississippi, there’s still a whole lot of season left there, so there’s time for Bethancourt to up his hitting.
This. I’m not ready to give up on him, he’s hitting roughly what Andy was. He’s too young to call him a bad hitter.
I think we have some nice players beyond Teheran, Vizcaino and Gilmartin in the farm system – Spruill, Bethancourt, Graham, Cunningham, Lipka, Salcedo, Ahmed, Martin – but that ain’t getting you far in the trade market. So yes, point taken.
That’s what you say now……..but when he’s [Bethancourt] putting up .240/.270/.300 lines the first few years, it’s going to get old, real quick.
Depends what the other positions are generating offensively. The Braves can carry a strong defensive, lighter-hitting catcher, if they’re getting the offense elsewhere.
Law’s describing one heckuva of a defensive standout in Bethancourt. If he and others are correct, I think Braves’ management would be foolish not to see how they can play Bethancourt and compensate for his bat from others.
He’ll [Bethancourt] repeat Double-A. You can’t hit like he has and expect a promotion.
Agree if his hitting remains flat. But it may not. I believe there’s still more than half a season left at Mississippi. Let’s see what Bethancourt does.
The Miami Marlins have a -60 run differential. Only the San Diego Padres have a worse differential, now with 93 games left in the season. Underachieving.
Only 2012 rook to get a hit is 30th round DH CASEY KALENKOSKY [.376 BA] 1-4.
2010 47th round RHSP FRANK LaFRENIERE [1.80 ERA] 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 SO. Nice job. Good to see the youngster hanging in.
RHRP CARLOS ‘Wild-thang’ PEREZ [BS 1, L 0-1, 27.00 ERA]
absolutely blows up in just two-thirds of an inning as he gives up the house. 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO. I’m thinking ‘LOS wants out of the org, and this is the only way he can express himself. Maybe time for JOHN SMOLTZ’s doc? Anybody got that number still handy?
RHRP ‘Iggy’ GERONIMO [7.71 ERA] 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1HR, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 1 SO. manages to top PEREZ’ miserable performance. Icing on the cake.
So, while it is great to hear good reports about Bethancourt, when is the last time a catcher was selected to the All-star team because of his defensive prowess? Other than Ozzie Smith, I cannot think of any player selected purely for their defense.
Hopefully Bethancourt will be ready by the time McCann walks. While the Braves will try to offer Brian what they consider a reasonable package, Atlanta simply cannot compete with teams like the Yankees or Boston.
That said, I still get ill every time I think about the amount of talent the Braves traded away to get Texiera. Talent that has helped the Rangers to the World Series appearances.
Hopefully Bethancourt will be ready by the time McCann walks. While the Braves will try to offer Brian what they consider a reasonable package, Atlanta simply cannot compete with teams like the Yankees or Boston.
Somebody go check in my McFann…. this gave her a heart attack
I keep hearing (reading) about how bad the fans in Atlanta are, I think it is a bit unfair. Take an area devastated by the recession and consider that wages are somewhat diminished in the area to begin with, add a stadium that is too large, located in a slum with poor access and I think you get what you have got.
Folks in Atlanta are tired of losing, period. No need to make yourself feel even more depressed than you already are. It is why the Yankees have so many fans, they are perennial winners. Most Yankee fans don’t even understand the game.
Sorry McFann, but it is the responsibility of bread winner to provide for his family to the best of his ability, that said, the only reason BMac might re-sign with the Braves would be at the behest of his wife. She may feel that strong family ties in Atlanta would out way a big payday to play in New York or on the west coast.
Now I’ve spent 10 minutes looking up everything there is to know about “Air Bud” on Wikipedia. So in the plot, the dog is abandoned by his owner and the kid’s dad dies? And this is supposed to be a Disney movie??
Not to mention, who abandons a dog that plays basketball! Seriously!?

Agree if his hitting remains flat. But it may not. I believe there’s still more than half a season left at Mississippi. Let’s see what Bethancourt does.

ELIZABETHTON does the down and dirty on the Rookies 7-2. D-BRAVES are four-hit.
2008 DSL grad LF EDISON SANCHEZ [.143 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 2 SO.
2008 DSL grad 1B ARIS ALCANTARA [.333 BA] 2-3. 1 R, 1 HR [1], 2 RBI [2], 1 BB, 1 SB [1].
2012 21st round RHRP JEREMY FIYZGERALD [0.00 ERA] 2.0 IP, no-hits, 1 BB, 2 SO. Nice job rook!
