Also take away from Yankee series(both of them) is that they went pitch to pitch with argueably possibly the best team in baseball. Which means regardless of how inconsistent the team has been, it currently has talent and possibilities for postseason are very real. I feel strongly the team needs to make some changes at the deadline(financially prudent ones though), and feel equally stronger that the team can play at a high level it did in mid April through early May. Freeman getting healthy, Heyward starting to hit. Giving up on this season would be foolish.

Any players on your list you trade to get a guy like Willingham, Wayne?

6 out of the last 11 World Series winners (AZ, FL, CHI, STL, SF, STL) were teams that were not considered necessarily as one of the top 5 teams in the league.

So, what that tells me is that to go all the way in the World Series, you have to be an extremely strong team, or you have to be hot going into the end of the season.

This team has the potential to go into a hot streak at any point in time. What the team needs is some luck with injuries and to get hot in mid to late September.

once you get in any tean can make a deep run as any number of previous winners have proven
very seldom does the “best team” win it all

I would include Minor or Delgado if necessary. But that deal would be funded by other prospects primarily.

I just got back in town, and I’m trying to catch up, but there are so many long or ALL CAPS blogs that it gets a little difficult. We need to somehow acquire a solid bat off the bench (who can also play multiple positions), as well as a decent pitcher out of the pen. It can’t be that hard, can it?

No way I would trade delgado, Wayne. And minor won’t satisfy. If you trade Delgado, do you replace him with Tehran?

Hot in September and extremely strong. How bout Craig Kimbrel making only 26 appearances this year. Kid had a 4.76 ERA in September last season. A tad overworked me thinks. Going to make 60 something appearances probably this season. Stay competitive till September and you will see a different Kimbrel and that will go a long way in making the playoffs and possibly going further in postseason. The guy made Jeter look like a minor leaguer the other day. His confidence is soaring.

don’t underestimate Minor’s value. GM’s know he’s a young pitcher and is going to go through rough patches, if he can get his BB’s under control he could basically BE Garza

Besides Minor or Delgado; you’ve got a list of players that other teams would take in trade. The idea is that you package 3-4 prospects that have a decent chance to be major leaguers and the receiving team takes a flier on this list of players.

Names: Lipka, Cunningham, Bethancourt, Hale, Gilmartin, Spruill, etc.

Frankie Wren – I agree about Kimbrel and the amount of his appearances. Should we make it to the playoffs, his reduced number of games will really make a difference. Still need the set-up men to step forward and perform like the past…I miss Moylan. Really want him back…

DREAM TEAM ESPN INsider
Recently, an editor at ESPN told me he was taking his kid to a minor league game and asked which players he should keep an eye on. As he was seeing the Rangers’ low Class A Hickory affiliate, one of the first players that came to mind was outfielder Jordan Akins, for whom I added a comment amount him possibly having the widest gap between the player he is and the player he has the potential to be.

That led to greater discussions about players to “dream” on, so here is the All-Dream team currently in the minors. In essence, the one prospect at each position with the largest gap between current ability and future potential. All of these players could be impact players in the big leagues, but every one of them has a long way to go and a lot of work to do.

C: Blake Swihart, Boston Red Sox
The 26th overall pick in last year’s draft, Swihart’s $2.5 million bonus was more in line with that of a top-10 pick, and he has rare tools for a catcher. Still, as a product of a New Mexico high school — which is a low level of competition by high school standards — he has a long way to go, as he hit just .250/.302/.375 during the first half of the season for low Class A Greenville.

A switch-hitter who is very athletic for a catcher, Swihart has the potential for average or more power down the road, and he shows a solid approach and good feel for contact so far. He has the potential to be a good defender as well, but like his hitting, it’s still a work in progress.

1B: Telvin Nash, Houston Astros
Nash has incredible raw power, including 18 home runs in 226 at-bats this year at high Class A Lancaster, but questions remain about his ability to tap into it as he progresses. At 6-foot-1 and 250 pounds, he’s a physical beast, but his swing mechanics are just as beastly.

With more than 60 percent of his hits this year going for extra bases, Nash makes dangerous contact. But with 114 strikeouts in 226 at-bats, it might not ever matter. It’s hard to make the majors if you strike out that frequently. For example, Adam Dunn fanned roughly once every four at-bats in the minors, which goes to show that even the most strikeout-prone major leaguers made more frequent contact in the minors.

2B: Delino DeShields, Houston Astros
The Astros knew they were drafting a raw product when they made DeShields the eighth overall pick in the 2010 draft, but he was a bit more unrefined than expected, hitting just .220/.305/.322 in his full-season debut and earning a return ticket to low Class A Lexington this year.

With a batting average of .265 and 45 stolen bases in 66 games, DeShields has certainly made some progress, but his raw power is still in the potential phase of the game. He just doesn’t make as much loud contact as you’d like to see in a player who could, if everything works out, hit 15 home runs and steal 50 bases annually.

3B: Aderlin Rodriguez, New York Mets
Rodriguez is the hot corner version of Nash. He’s a massive player with massive power, but he’s yet to hit enough to make a difference with it. Spending his second straight year at low Class A Savannah, Rodriguez is hitting .254/.326/.459, and scouts have noted some big steps forward in his game.

He’s relaxed his swing and begun to trust his strength, which has led to a dip in strikeouts. Scouts have also noted defensive improvements, but whether or not he ends up being able to stay at third base is open to debate.

SS: Luis Sardinas, Texas Rangers
Sardinas earned a seven-figure bonus out of Venezuela three years ago, but 2012 is the first season he’s been healthy. Still just 19, Sardinas has some drool-worthy upside, especially on the bases and defensively, as he’s a plus-plus runner who has 21 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He also has well above-average range, hands and arm strength.

Now for the bad news: He’s skinny and weak, and that’s holding him back at the plate, where he is hitting just .259 for Hickory, and 46 of his 50 hits have been singles. If he can just develop enough offensively to hit at the bottom of a lineup, he’ll have significant value.

OF: Jordan Akins, Texas Rangers
The aforementioned Akins has the size and athleticism to earn comparisons to a young Matt Kemp, but he’s not on the same planet as Kemp in terms of baseball ability. He’s a plus-plus runner who earns equal grades for his raw power, but he has almost zero feel for hitting.

His .207/.235/.346 line at Hickory includes 76 strikeouts in 217 at-bats and just seven walks. There’s no prospect in baseball who fits the “spectacular mess” label more than Akins, but he’ll get (and deserves) plenty of time to figure things out.

OF: Byron Buxton, Minnesota Twins
This year’s second overall pick, Buxton’s $6 million bonus will almost certainly be the 2012 draft’s biggest payday, and he earned it with his tools. He has the potential to be a dynamic center fielder with above-average power, blazing speed and outstanding defense.

That said, he will be a bit of a project, as while he held his own on the national tournament circuit, he simply did not see any quality pitching during his years at a rural Georgia high school. His ceiling in this year’s draft class was unmatched, but he’s not expected to move quickly through the system, and many adjustments will be necessary.

OF: Bubba Starling, Kansas City Royals
Starling was last year’s Buxton, but he might have even more upside yet also more risk. At 6-4 and 180 pounds, he has the potential to be a five-tool monster, but he was as focused on football as baseball in high school, so he remains quite raw.

All of the tools are there, including plus-plus power and arm strength and well-above-average speed, but his hitting ability is still a work in progress. After signing late last year and being held back in extended spring training in 2012, he turns 20 in August and has yet to make his official debut. He’s arguably the biggest lottery ticket in the game.

SP: Luis Heredia, Pittsburgh Pirates
Some think Heredia is the best pitching prospect ever to come out of Mexico, and the Pirates showed they might share that perspective when they signed the then 16-year-old to a $2.6 million deal two years ago. Heredia held his own in the Gulf Coast League last year and will begin his 2012 season in the New York-Penn League as a 17-year-old, and there’s still plenty of room for growth in his game and body.

Already 6-6, Heredia can touch 96 mph with his fastball while comfortably sitting at 90-93. He’s still refining his mechanics and is struggling to find consistency in his delivery due to his length, but he does know how to spin a breaking ball and has some feel for a changeup. He might be five years away from Pittsburgh, but Heredia has a ceiling that ranks with much more well-known Pirates arms like Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon.

no kidding about being the Braves GM

I think it’s fairly easy to be the GM of both high and low revenue teams. High rev GM’s covet and they go after what they want. Low revenue’s GM’s develop talent and then trade it away for value.

Mid level GM’s have to both maximize young talent’s performance as well as be on the lookout for potential bargains in the trade and free agent market. Sure you can dive into the deep end of the pool every few years. But if the player turns out to underperform (Lowe) it can be your job .

I don’t covet FW’s job in the least bit

Braves do have an interesting dilemma for this year in regards to pitching.

In 2014,they will be lights out as a starting staff. Beachy will be back to full strength and he showed this year he can be a legitimate all star pitcher. Teheran will be by then at least a #2-3 starter as will Delgado. Minor should continue to progress and be a solid #3-4 pitcher. I firmly believe that Vizcaino could be a great long term starting pitcher especially when he recovers from TJ (should have been done years ago) and also has a ceiling of #1-#2 starter. The 5th starter can be Minor, who will mature to a very solid #3-#4 starter or Medlen or any one of a number of our prospects who may develop. This does not even include Hudson or Hanson. Long term rotation in good shape on the big board.

But what to do about this year? Losing Beachy meant the Braves lost their #1 starter. Hudson is more a #3 starter at this point in his career. Hanson is a #3 on a good rotation who can pitch like a #2 at times. Delgado has been solid for the most part and Minor seem to be turning it around but both will have growing pains. Not the strongest 1-4 and leaves a huge hole at the 5th starter. Teheran could be impressive at times and remind us why he has the potential of an ace, but will also have significant growing pains at his age and stage of development. Jurrjens has done nothing to give us confidence so far. Medlen would be a great option but leave a gaping hole in the bullpen.

Do the Braves go for broke and trade for Greinke with an extension? Gives us our #1 for this year and all of a sudden our rotation looks strong again. 2014 – Greinke, Beachy, Teheran and 2 of Delgado/Minor/Medlen/Hanson/Hudson/Gilmartin –that is a rotation!! The cost though would be huge – in dollars or a team on a budget would be huge and in prospects to obtain him.

Do we move Medlen to the starting rotation? Does not give us our ace but would be the most cost effective. It is a lot cheaper to aquire a top notch set up guy than a top of the rotation starter – in dollars and in prospects.

Do we take the middle ground and acquire someone like McCarthy? Middle of the road in cost of prospects and someone we could probably lock up at a reasonable cost. I think McCarthy would be a great fit with the Braves and could fluorish in the NL. He is not an ace but would sure look good in our rotation for years to come.

Which way will the Braves go? Probably a 4th way that no one has thought of yet but it will be fun to watch the trade rumors

In 1986, FSU lost to Arizona 10-2 in the National Championship game.

After 26 years, FSU improved – by one run.

It was embarassing…. and to think we were so close to winning the first game of this CWS against them…

Being an FSU Baseball fan is much more frustrating than being a Braves fan…

At least FSU didn’t collapse their way out of the tournament….

As for all the trade rumor people are putting up, I’m not expecting any of them to go through. Just about all of the pitching that other teams will want is our top talent, which we’ll be needing soon. Other than that, we don’t have very much. We’re not a deep franchise. We can’t afford to trade away the guys who are just becoming useful to us.

I’d be sick if they traded Delgado. Great arm, great stuff, but there’s something else about him that makes me see him a top pitcher in the league real soon. Maybe because he learns quick and has a fearless way about him. IDK, but no chance I’d even think about dealing him away.

Guys that throw an easy 94-95, then a 80 mph changeup with exact same arm action are ones you keep. You can tell Delgado knows what he’s doing, not just using his stuff and hoping.

I hope they don’t go after Garza. He’s too much of a head case on the mound. Would prefer Dempster (once he comes back off the DL). Would cost less, and we don’t need arms down the road (we might not even need them now. definitely hope that we give a good long look to our in house options of JJ, Medlen, Teheran, before blowing a big package to bring in another arm that might not be much better. If we can get Dempster or someone comparable at a good price, then sure, but no need to get rid of a bunch of prospects now, not before we see what JJ/Meds/JT have to offer)

Hello everyone! It’s not going take that much to get Garza, and Delgado is off limits. He made it to 8 innings, and he’s getting better each start. Good to talk to everyone again.

I think J.J. for Garza is good deal with a player to be named later. It’s not going to take that much.

Sorry about Bourn in RF, meant to say LF, and next year put Todd Cunningham in Center, and Heyward in RF. Thats how I would do it.
