When I was a lad we’d get up in the middle of the night half an hour before we went to bed, eat broken glass for breakfast, and go out into the 172 degree weather and clean the stripe down the middle of the road with our tongues… — Venice Jim

Well, I tell you what is freaky — it’s watching a kid who lived down the block, who was at your house all the time when he was little, in a game being announced by Vin Scully and pitching an 8-inning masterpiece thus far against the Dodgers.

Tommy Milone was a throw-in on the Gio Gonzalez deal, and of the 4 Nats sent to Oakland — he’s the only one up — and he’s building himself quite an MLB resume thus far. Very freaky to watch him facing guys like Ichiro, Pujols etc…. But Beane wanted him to seal the deal and he’s really proving himself.

Funny sketch, VJ. It reminds me of an “All in the Family” sketch, where 2 burglars break into the Bunker house and keep the family hostage in their house until the cops, who are looking for them, leave the neighborhood. While they are waiting, the 2 burglars get into a hilarious routine about who was poorer, growing up.

Doesn’t throw above 87 — but quite a difference on the change up.

Drafted in the 10th round out of USC I think 4-5 years ago. Had to earn his way all the way through the Washington system — came up last season and homered against the Mets.

Then traded to the A’s in the offseason — best spot for him because of vast expanses of the Oakland Coliseum. Contact pitcher.

WASHINGTON — Davey Johnson says Joe Maddon should “read the rulebook.” Maddon says the rulebook shouldn’t always rule in the “self-policing” world of major league baseball — and that if anyone was cheating, it was Johnson.

The managers of the Washington Nationals and Tampa Bay Rays weren’t exactly playing kiss-and-make-up Wednesday in baseball’s latest spat: Johnson’s decision to challenge Tampa Bay reliever Joel Peralta’s glove in Washington’s 5-4 loss the night before.

The umpires found pine tar on Peralta’s glove. He was ejected from the game and expects a suspension of up to 10 days from Major League Baseball. The league office said it was investigating the incident and that no decision would be announced Wednesday.

Maddon was furious after the game, calling Johnson’s actions “cowardly,” “bush” and “bogus.” Johnson knew about the pine tar because had inside information on Peralta, who pitched for the Nationals in 2010.

Johnson responded to Maddon before Wednesday’s game, and Maddon then responded to Johnson. Some of the words used would not appear on most Christmas cards.

Johnson: “Any time there’s a rule violation, as far as I’m concerned, it’s just a rule violation. My only comment to him is read the rulebook. It’s simple.”

Brian from SC

Jason Heyward is now one of 20 National League position players who are over 2.0 WAR this season according to baseball-reference. It attempts to combine hitting, defense and baserunning into a single value relative to strength of the player’s defensive position. That means that, at least according to this statistic, Heyward has been one of the 20 most valuable position players in the NL.

The Braves are the only team with four players in the top 20:
3. Bourn, 3.5
9. Prado, 2.7
17. Heyward, 2.1
19. Uggla, 2.1

Brian from SC

June 21st, 2012

Fangraph’s WAR tells an even better story:

4. Bourn, 3.7
6. Prado, 3.1
12. Heyward, 2.6
16. Uggla, 2.5

It seems like for several years the Braves have had a solid infield, but a relatively weak outfield. It’s different this year. According to Fangraphs WAR, the Braves have the most valuable CF, and the second-most valuable LF and RF in the NL this year.

Great at bat against the lefty for Heyward and we need to see more of that since he’s been brutal against southpaws for 1 1/2 yrs. Reality is if Bourn isn’t signed, we need a RH batter out in CF. Freeman will get better against lefthanders but has been poor this season. Mac has a very low .OBP against them. People were clamming for Francisco to play 3rd early on? Last thing we need is another lefthander in the lineup next season.

Maybe FW should look to Tampa for trade possibilities and bench help. Love to see either Keppinger or Zobrist on this team. Keppinger can play anywhere on the infield and Zobrist both infield and outfield. His avg is poor but high .OBP and has some pop to his bat. Keppinger on rehab assignment and should be back soon. They have some depth in that area especially when Longoria gets back.
