People stop saying we need this player or need to make this trade. Until Fredi is gone and Frank Wren goes with him, it will continue to be the same. Braves wanted a Bobby Cox type manager and they got it. Problem is Bobby Ball does not work anymore (notice the past ten years in Atlanta?).
No the Tex deal was an overpay and for a team that didn’t need another bat but needed 2 starters at a minimum, it was JS trying to secure his legacy ith another division , Drew was an actual need filled, I think we got draft picks for Drew too when he left.
“What it does, if JJ comes out and pitches well, the snipers all of a sudden they don’t raise their prices if we decide we want [to trade for a pitcher],” Gonzalez said. “They won’t say, you need him really bad, so instead of this [asking price] it’s these two other guys.”
jim is spot on in his 7:09 pm post. Kids’ baseball in a lot of places these days has been professionalized, with parents pressing kids to perform well enough to secure scholarships.
An acquaintance of mine’s kid is young (14) and a very talented player. Actually had a Mets’ scout out to evaluate him. After evaluating the kid, the scout said he’d be back in a few years, and in the meantime, don’t push the kid too hard and make sure he was having fun playing.
Braves traded Wainwright, Jason Marquis, and Ray “Burger” King, and got JD Drew and Eli Marrero – a very forgettable player for sure. No draft picks at all.
I think all Fredo proves is that at the professional level, managing and coaches may not do much to help a team, but the wrong guys sure can bring an otherwise solid team down with boneheaded decisions and lack of leadership qualities. Does anyone really think Joe Torre got that much better as a manager from his time with the Cardinals (where he sucked), to the Yankees? All he had to do was not screw it up. Bobby Cox, same thing, you had four future HoF in the team, try not to screw it up. But Fredi, and seemingly every other pro coach in this town of the last decade or so, screws it up.
@Jeff R: good points about comparing JS at the end and FW at the beginning. Just hope Wren doesn’t fall prey to the same temptations that swayed Schuerholtz
Agree on Cano – he is the real gem of that lineup. Him and Gardner would be my two picks. Most of the other guys, as good as they are, are getting older and slower and don’t have too many years left.
I’ll put in my two cents here, and leave it be for the rest of the year. The Braves don’t need to panic for another bat OR another arm. What they SHOULD do is keep rolling Minor and Delgado out there along with either Jurrgens, Tehran, or Medlen. They could even give Hudson or Hanson a break (since both coming off injuries from last year) every fifth day by rolling a 1-2 combination of those guys out there. If anything, Wren should trade for some bullpen help. As far as the offense goes, it seems like calling up AA guys (ie Simmons) seems to be working out. Give Gatis a chance or someone else with the bat. Our future is our rotation and farm system minus Chipper/Lowe/ possibly Hudson off the books next year to get a quality bomber at 3rd or left field. Sorry Chipper…sorry we couldn’t give you that swan song you wanted, but we can’t unload any talent to plug in gaps for just the remainder of this year. Not worth it!!!!!
Kuroda threw 8 pitches that inning. This team needs to alter there approach back to the way it was when they were extremely patient and working walks earlier in the season. They look so awful and uninspiring at the plate right now.
I don’t care what anyone wants to make of WAR, anyone who has been following and watching the game should come to the conclusion that Giancarlo Stanton has been far better than Heyward this year by far.
Don’t even want to get in a long winded debate on it.
As for traditional stats, OBP should have been more closely paid attention to years ago.
OPS and RC I have no problem with, but VORP and WAR are theoretical & ficticious.
valdosta, agree. It’s rebuilding time around Freeman, Simmons, Heyward, Prado, Kimbrel, Beachy, Minor, Medlen, Hanson. Trade Bourn before the deadline, shop Jurrjens. Hang onto McCann for another year while a catcher in the minors gets ready. Dump Fredi for someone who will let give the kids some leadership, play the kids, get another veteran pitcher and hitter in here with the $ and let them make a serious run in a year or two.

Telling you, toward the end, Schuerholz was all about keeping The Run going. Long term planning went out the window.
Frank Wren – to his credit – took over and began looking longer range again. Wren reemphasized developing pitching (which has begun to pay off).
As we all can see, it takes time to restock a system. But the results have positive payoff ongoing.
