Makes perfect sense to sit Chipper. He has to stand on the field for about 10 minutes before the game to be honored. That would cut down on the number of innings he could play today so may as well give him the entire game off.

David O’Brien @ajcbraves
#Braves manager Gonzalez said he’s using McCann as DH today in order to give Chipper consecutive days off
6/18 Fredi Gonzalez said Chipper Jones would probably DH Tuesday in the second game of the series.
6/19 Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he expects to use third baseman Chipper Jones as the Braves’ designated hitter Wednesday.
Maybe he just needs to keep his mouth shut about such matters…
I have some supporters out there, thank you all.
Running for office?
Well, you can’t blame Fredi for being Fredi. It’s not his fault he’s in the position he’s in. He’s doing the best he can, he just happens to be overmatched.
June 20th, 201212:48 pm
If a baseball manager was as important as a head coach in football or basketball I could understand the constant obsessing over Fred. They simply aren’t going to fire him in the middle of the season!! If / When they move on from Fredi it’ll be during an offseason.
June 20th, 201212:49 pm
That sounds like something you say to a child who effs up in little league, not a highly paid major league manager.
June 20th, 201212:51 pm
I do think Fredi has put us in some situations this season and last that didn’t improve our chances to win, but your right about the manager being unable to win or loose the game by himself. It still comes down to the player executing on any given play or situation.
Amen, McFann. To me, this started practically the day he was hired when he started talking about batting orders months before opening day. I know folks in his position have a responsibility to be somewhat forthcoming with the media, but it really wouldn’t hurt him to just say something like “we’ll make that decision closer to gametime” once in a while.
“If a baseball manager was as important as a head coach in football or basketball I could understand the constant obsessing over Fred. They simply aren’t going to fire him in the middle of the season!! If / When they move on from Fredi it’ll be during an offseason.”
And that is why there aren’t any managers in the baseball hall of fame. What they do just doesn’t matter. (rolling eyes at crazy talk)

Sigh…days like today make me remember why I left for a long time a while back, and make me want to leave for a long time again.
Fredi just isn’t much of a thinker.
June 20th, 201212:54 pm
Yeah should have saved Lugo for more important times like bottom of the 9th instead of Diaz or Hinske?
All Da Way Turn’t Up!
Owl Hunter, it could be he just over thinks everything and overlooks the obvious.
“Fredi just isn’t much of a thinker.”
Thinking in baseball isn’t always a good thing. Sometimes you want a guy who doesn’t do too much thinking.
June 20th, 201212:55 pm
Hinske shouldn’t even be on this team, the dude has been in decline over the last 3 years. Cut him loose.
June 20th, 201212:56 pm
You can’t use a guy that’s struggling to hit .125 as your first bat on the chance that ou MIGHT need a pinch hitter later in the game. There is no justification for that.
Remembering Lugo in Our Lineup last year makes my stomach hurt…He was the 2011 version of Jack Wilson…
June 20th, 201212:57 pm
Why is Everyone Hatin on SKE?
The Dude is still the Truth coming off the bench, problem is that we have seen to much of him as a starter
Other than those obvious moments when you should leave a pitcher in to battle through something, and when to yank them out…does it really matter?
There’s a reason Phil Jackson only wanted to coach Jordan and Kobe…I triple dog dare him to coach himself to a championship with the Toronto Raptors. Coaching is glorified by teams that have athlete’s that perform.
Our guys aren’t performing like they should. Chipper is not hitting, McCann/Uggla/Freeman are batting .250 range. The guys need to step it up, not the coach.
The A Bomb
Braves are 4-3 before a day off.
Too bad all the Tuesdays are gamedays.
I’m here, George.
June 20th, 201212:58 pm
Matt Garza. RT @JustinMain: @ajcbraves anyone besides dempster on the braves eye for pitching if we go that route? Since he is on dl
If we can get the guy without gutting the system, then go ahead. Trading six years of Julio Teheran for 1.5 years of Matt Garza makes absolutely no sense at all though. I don’t care what Teheran has looked like in the majors for the small sample size of 25 innings(6 starts).
Brian from SC,
I totally understand!
Try to ignore the idiots and move on.
Good point, but it’s comforting to know that your manager is capable of reasonable thought when it becomes necessary. Fredi’s baseball instincts are below avaerage, to put it nicely.
And that is why there aren’t any managers in the baseball hall of fame.
Well this guys might have a bone to pick with that:
June 20th, 201212:59 pm
I guess some people feel better when they complain about stuff. Personally, just reading all the whining makes me depressed. I was happy about a Braves win and looking forward to a series win today until I hung out in here.
June 20th, 20121:00 pm
Did you see that Fregosi was at Garza’s last start?
“Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago mentioned in his chat that Jim Fregosi recently saw Matt Garza pitch along with six or seven other teams that are interested in him. Watching him pitch and negotiating a trade are two entirely different things, but it shows the Braves are at least willing to send Fregosi to watch him.”
Teheran is just not ready to contribute at the big league level yet.
I think I’ll disagree with you on that one, at least on degree. If by “contribute”, you mean “contend for the Cy”, or “immediately be a front-line pitcher”, or something similar, I’m with you. But he’s certainly capable of stepping into this rotation and being a factor.

30 minnutes till I am outta here, Where is Brava? She supports me.
She’s not the only one, George. I’ve got your back, so go ahead, say stuff.
And that is why there aren’t any managers in the baseball hall of fame. What they do just doesn’t matter.
It does, but not nearly to the level that people place it on!!
June 20th, 20121:02 pm
flange1, yeah, I saw it. I think they are going to be interested in a pitcher unless Jurrjens pitches really well over the next five weeks – which I don’t see happening.
Gonzalez said he’s using McCann as DH today in order to give Chipper consecutive days off
Why would we want Garza? Pretty much the same numbers as Delgado. No reason to give up prospects him.
June 20th, 20121:03 pm
Good To Hear Boog Powell and Don Sutton Again…Love Matinee days at work…Hope the offense doesn’t Tank it since its Getaway Day
I think Wren doesn’t want to see Minor, Delgado and Teheran in the same rotation right now. April 2013? More likely.
She’s not the only one, George. I’ve got your back, so go ahead, say stuff.
That’s because Bat and I are nolie’s sidekicks and nolie supports you too, George.
Classy presentation by the Yankees for Chipper just now at home plate.
Chipper honored as “one of the great switch-hitters of our time” by Yankees. Yankees Derek Jeter and Andruw Jones presented Chipper with 3rd base from last night’s game in glass case, presentation at home plate.
It is ridiculously hot here….
“Gonzalez said he’s using McCann as DH today in order to give Chipper consecutive days off”
Then he lied the previous two days.
Garza has a similar walk rate to Randall?
June 20th, 20121:04 pm
I agree, I like consecutive days off myself…I call them…WEEKEND! I’m usually ready to go by Monday.
I was happy about a Braves win and looking forward to a series win today until I hung out in here.
Idiots don’t bother me they make me feel better about myself!!
That is it exactly.
That is why the “regulars” complain about the negative stuff on here constantly and good folks like Moe Berg and Tom O’Hawk leave the blog.
The folks yelling the negative comment are usually drive by folks, 1 regular who uses multiple monkiers and the normal ignorant regular bloggers.
I think we should do like ’scoots and use the scroll wheel and not even read the garbage from those folks
I think when it comes to potential rotation acquisitions, people are looking at names more than degree of upgrade over what we already have.
June 20th, 20121:05 pm
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
…. Yankees Jeter and Andruw Jones presented #Braves Chipper with 3rd base from last night’s game in glass case, presentation at home plate
June 20th, 20121:06 pm
Hmm…i’m calling it……we are scoring MORE than 6 runs today.
Book it. You can all throw stones at me later, but my cup-of-soup isn’t just sodium. It’s the future!
Then he lied the previous two days.
Or, you know…maybe circumstances changed that changed his decision.
June 20th, 20121:07 pm
Yeah, I think Garza is head and shoulders over the rest. Wren probably agrees. He’ll cost ya, though. Not sure we meet that cost. Unlikely, I’d say.
“Garza has a similar walk rate to Randall?”
37-60 BB/K Delgado
22-70 BB/K Garza
That difference is not worth a few prospects.
June 20th, 20121:08 pm
Maybe Chipper is hurting and the Braves don’t want the world to know that.
Maybe they should just have jerseys made up and let those pitch.
(You/re right, of course.)
June 20th, 20121:09 pm
Bourn is on fiya!
Wren isn’t going to trade anyone for Joe Saunders. He’s smarter than that.
June 20th, 20121:10 pm
That’s a pretty big difference. Even as Delgado has improved as the season has gone along, he is still having control issues.
June 20th, 20121:11 pm
I still like Brandon McCarthy. Just never healthy, so he’s probably not in consideration.
I don’t like Joe Saunders either. Bring up Teheran if that’s our option.
I agree that Garza is’t wrth what we’d have to give up.
June 20th, 20121:12 pm
I still keep thinking about this article from Buster Olney through MLBTR
Could the Braves be trying to trade JJJ, Redmond and others to the Twins for Willingham?
I still can’t figure out why they brought up Redmond to help in relief until JJJ is called up, but he was not available to pitch (because he is a starter and had just started) for a couple of the days he is up.
The Twins liked (still do) Scott Diamond.
Not sure if there is something there or not.
June 20th, 20121:13 pm
Can’t stand Granderson
Do we really need Willingham? Who will he step in for? Don’t say Heyward.
June 20th, 20121:14 pm
If by “contribute”, you mean “contend for the Cy”, or “immediately be a front-line pitcher”, or something similar, I’m with you. But he’s certainly capable of stepping into this rotation and being a factor.
Always with the Cy Young talk, scoots….
A guy can come in as a starter and help the team without being a Cy Young pitcher, even if he isn’t 6 foot 11.
June 20th, 20121:15 pm
MikeInFlit really wouldn’t hurt him to just say something like “we’ll make that decision closer to gametime” once in a while.
MFin04 Then he lied the previous two days.
So it would seem, anyway…
Bourn is having an unbelievable year.
Even tho I ate lunch, I’d like to order an Uggla tater at this time.
June 20th, 20121:16 pm
From now on, whenever Fredi is asked a question, he should just reply that he doesn’t know the answer. That way he never says something that it’s possible he would change his mind on. I’m sure this strategy would endear him to the fans.
June 20th, 20121:17 pm
Not a tater, but I’ll take it
Way to go, Big Sexy!! Wow, I love Uggla!
June 20th, 20121:18 pm
My prediction from earlier is magically appearing in front of me…….come on Braves….6 more runs and i’m there!
would’ve respected that RBI knock if he was hitting at least .270 …
looks like the finger is healed
Freddie with da Bomb!!!!
FREDERICK OF HOLLYWOOD!
I think Freeman is doing ok!! Woo-hoo, Freddie!!!
I’m shocked that Freeman can even make contact with the ball considering he’s batting 5th instead of 3rd.
June 20th, 20121:19 pm
I said, more than 6 runs…….looky looky!
Btw, Hey y’all!
Bravesgrl4life—Good to see you.
Yes, Freeman should stop swinging so much at that first pitch.
Hey, there’s no law that says he can’t change his mind, but why would he keep
Saying that Chipper was gonna DH and then not? Unless Chipper’s hurting…or BMac is…anyway, I think it’s time for me to stop. Already annoying half my public…
One down. Two to go. Just need Heyward to park one in RF. Mac too.
June 20th, 20121:20 pm
Is that BravesQueen I see??? Hey, girlfriend, where ya been? How ya doing?
We CAN hit homers! That looked a lot like last nights swings.
Freeman is gonna be a boss.
If Chipper didn’t need back-to-back days of rest, he wouldn’t be getting it. You think Fredi enjoys writing “Francisco” in?
Kick some butt Bravos!
June 20th, 20121:21 pm
Of course, the dinger did turn out to be a rally-killer, LOL.
Love early runs
June 20th, 20121:22 pm
Dang, Tommy, let that be the only one you give back!
Yikes, stop it, Tommy.
That’s because Bat and I are nolie’s sidekicks and nolie supports you too, George. _ Brava
