Makes perfect sense to sit Chipper. He has to stand on the field for about 10 minutes before the game to be honored. That would cut down on the number of innings he could play today so may as well give him the entire game off.

#Braves manager Gonzalez said he’s using McCann as DH today in order to give Chipper consecutive days off

6/18 Fredi Gonzalez said Chipper Jones would probably DH Tuesday in the second game of the series.

6/19 Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he expects to use third baseman Chipper Jones as the Braves’ designated hitter Wednesday.

Maybe he just needs to keep his mouth shut about such matters…

Well, you can’t blame Fredi for being Fredi. It’s not his fault he’s in the position he’s in. He’s doing the best he can, he just happens to be overmatched.

If a baseball manager was as important as a head coach in football or basketball I could understand the constant obsessing over Fred. They simply aren’t going to fire him in the middle of the season!! If / When they move on from Fredi it’ll be during an offseason.

I do think Fredi has put us in some situations this season and last that didn’t improve our chances to win, but your right about the manager being unable to win or loose the game by himself. It still comes down to the player executing on any given play or situation.

Amen, McFann. To me, this started practically the day he was hired when he started talking about batting orders months before opening day. I know folks in his position have a responsibility to be somewhat forthcoming with the media, but it really wouldn’t hurt him to just say something like “we’ll make that decision closer to gametime” once in a while.

Other than those obvious moments when you should leave a pitcher in to battle through something, and when to yank them out…does it really matter?

There’s a reason Phil Jackson only wanted to coach Jordan and Kobe…I triple dog dare him to coach himself to a championship with the Toronto Raptors. Coaching is glorified by teams that have athlete’s that perform.

Our guys aren’t performing like they should. Chipper is not hitting, McCann/Uggla/Freeman are batting .250 range. The guys need to step it up, not the coach.

They will!

If we can get the guy without gutting the system, then go ahead. Trading six years of Julio Teheran for 1.5 years of Matt Garza makes absolutely no sense at all though. I don’t care what Teheran has looked like in the majors for the small sample size of 25 innings(6 starts).

Did you see that Fregosi was at Garza’s last start?

from CAC

“Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago mentioned in his chat that Jim Fregosi recently saw Matt Garza pitch along with six or seven other teams that are interested in him. Watching him pitch and negotiating a trade are two entirely different things, but it shows the Braves are at least willing to send Fregosi to watch him.”

Teheran is just not ready to contribute at the big league level yet.

I think I’ll disagree with you on that one, at least on degree. If by “contribute”, you mean “contend for the Cy”, or “immediately be a front-line pitcher”, or something similar, I’m with you. But he’s certainly capable of stepping into this rotation and being a factor.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/06/twins-seek-pitching.html

Could the Braves be trying to trade JJJ, Redmond and others to the Twins for Willingham?

I still can’t figure out why they brought up Redmond to help in relief until JJJ is called up, but he was not available to pitch (because he is a starter and had just started) for a couple of the days he is up.

The Twins liked (still do) Scott Diamond.
