DOWN ON THE FARM
Our old buddy JEFF LOCKE hurls a six-inning one-run gem at the G-Men who hurl a two-run nine inning gem back at the INDIANS. Unfortunately, the INDIANS’ reliefers shut down the BRAVES’ bats and prevail 2-1. A real pitching duel despite 16 combined hits by the two clubs.
RHSP JAIR JURJJENS [5.18 ERA] 1.0 IP, no-hits, 2 BB, 2 SO.
RHRP BUDDY CARLYSLE [2.11 ERA] throws a four-inning, two-hit, shutout relief masterpiece with one walk and seven SO’s. BUDDY is standing tall and looking good.
LHRP DUSTY HUGHES [BS 1, 3.26 ERA] starts the BRAVES ball rolling downhill with two-innngs of decent work, but the defensive infield contributes the only error of the game, and that ultimately proves to be the difference in the contest. 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO.
RHRP JAYE CHAPMAN [L 2-3, 2.70 ERA] 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 SO. Gives up two doubles, and can’t prevent to winning run from scoring in the top of the ninth.
C J.C. BOSCAN [.194 BA] 1-3, 1 SO, 1 SAC, 1 PB . JC’s PB doesn’t figure in the loss.
2B LANCE ZAWADZKI [.237 BA] 1-4, 1 SO, 1 E [3, fielding].
1B ERNESTO MEJIA [.311 BA] 1-4, 1 SO.
SS TYLER PASTORNICKY [.273 BA] 2-4, 2 2B .
LF STEFAN GARTRELL [.246 BA] 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB .
Lead-off CF LUIS DURANGO [.285 BA] 2-4, 12 SO, 1 SB , 1 Put out [1B].
RF FELIX PIE [.275 BA] 2-4, 1 3B , 1 RBI , 1 SO.
June 20th, 20127:33 am
Has the Prodigal Son returned?
Let’s not over look the bullpen last night.
Four shutout innings of one hit, one walk ball.
Lead by the much unheralded Chad Durbin.
Durbin threw 7 pitches to the three batters he faced in his inning. 6 were strikes. Take away his poor start to the season, he has pitched really well.
Great game overall by the Braves.
Remember, it was a statement game!
June 20th, 20127:41 am
I meant a question mark after Francoeur.
June 20th, 20127:43 am

ALL-STAR break in the SOUTHERN League.
CF TODD CUNNINGHAM goes 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB, 1 E.
C CHRISTIAN BETHANCOURT subs and goes 0-1.
RHSP ZEKE SPRUILL, RHSP DAVID HALE, and RHRP GARY MORAN each go one inning of relief allowing a combined 3 H, and one unearned run with one walk and three strike-outs. SPRUILL gets a hold.
June 20th, 20127:45 am

RA Dickey every four days. He is having a great year.

I’ll admit that I’ve been waiting for Simmons to fall to earth, with the bat. I now it’s only been two weeks, but I had zero expectation that he would bring it as strongly as he has. Even his wallk rate is up there with anybody on the team, sans Uggla. He had shown some improvement in that area at AA, but who could have expected him to bring that with him to the bigs?
He don’t look shook, and that’s a fact.
June 20th, 20128:10 am
Didn’t the Rockies have a 4 man rotation a few years ago? Or am I making that up?
June 20th, 20128:14 am
GSL – ORLANDO
Kicks off tonight.
BRAVES bag TIGERS 8-5. I thought it was illegal to hunt TIGERS in the wild.
3B JOHAN CAMARGO [.324 BA] 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO.
DH VICTOR REYES [.289 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO.
RF MIGUEL RIVERO [.341 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI , 1 BB.
1B IBRAHIM McKENZIE [.244 BA] 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR , 3 RBI .
CF JOSE MORAL [.200 BA] 1-5, 1 R, 2 SO.
C ALEXANDER De La CRUZ [.250 BA] 2-4, 1 R, 1 3B , 2 RBI .
2B LUIS MONASTERIO [.200 BA] 1-2, 1 RBI , 1 BB.
RHSP JESUS JONES [6.52 ERA] 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 HR, 3 R/ER, 1 BB, 2 SO
LHRP ENRIQUE MEDINA [W 1-0, 0.00 ERA] 1.0 IP, no-hits, 1 BB.
RHRP RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ [SV 4, 0.00 ERA] 1.0 IP, pristine, 1 SO.

Bah…series has been crapped on already by the naysayers and such…Damned Bankees…
Statement Game today!
June 20th, 20128:16 am
Re; SIMMONS, agreed!
June 20th, 20128:21 am
“The entire NL pretty much sucks this year.” WHOB
Seriously. Why do you even watch baseball at all?
June 20th, 20128:26 am
And I’m thinking the first inning is a big Statement Inning!
June 20th, 20128:27 am
Gotta say, I’m more encouraged by Heyward with each game he’s played lately. And Simmons debut has been impressive.
June 20th, 20128:30 am
Kimbrel: 15 cons. scoreless apps since May 8, 11-for-11 saves, .061 opp. average (3-for-49), 2 BB, 24 K
Durbin: 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8 — 15-1/3 innings, six hits, .122 OPP avg
Lew,why a lot of people on this blog watch baseball is a mystery profound. On another note, good to see Jimmy cheered up.
June 20th, 20128:31 am
Didn’t the Rockies have a 4 man rotation a few years ago?
Good question. I dunno. Are you suggesting the Braves go that route?
I’m not against the idea, but I’m not sure Hudson has the stamina for the additional innings.
June 20th, 20128:32 am
Way to think small…
Can’t Wait for THE First Statement Pitch!
Durbin: 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8 — 15-1/3 innings, six hits, .122 OPP avg
Cats living with dogs.
Durbin: 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8
Well that’s something. He had a more dubious HR streak earlier in the season. Reminds me of Uggla last year. Horrible to start, off the wall afterwards.
How about the much-maligned Chad “Senator” Durbin quietly becoming so effective?
CB – I stand in constant amazement of some things that get said on this blog.
June 20th, 20128:33 am
Which better be a strike, or the whole game will be Ballgamed with a cherry on top…
June 20th, 20128:34 am
Kimbrel is just a lights out kinda guy. Dominant comes to mind.
June 20th, 20128:35 am
I’m calling ballgame when they come out of the hotel.
June 20th, 20128:36 am
They’re going to inforce a very strict 75 pitch limit on there pitchers. Once they hit 75 or if they finish an AB and have close to 75 they’re taking them out.
June 20th, 20128:37 am
Heyward is hitting .340 (18-for-53) with eight extra-base hits (two homers) and 10 strikeouts in 15 June games (53 at-bats), with a .375 OBP and .585 slugging.
This after hitting .200 in May (30 games) with nine extra-base hits, 30 strikeouts in 95 at-bats, with a .315 OBP and .389 slugging.
I’m missing the “Fredi stinks” and the “McCann is fat” comments this morning. Kinda gives me a jolt like caffeine.
There’s a pill for that you know?
Jeff R… I would love to know what Jeter said to McCann after he struck out… It looked like he looked back and said something to Mac.
June 20th, 20128:38 am
Kimbrel is just a lights out kinda guy.
Big innings, deep starts, and a fearless closer. That’s my personal recipe for success.
Braves might be a little short on the middle one, but they’re good to go on the other two.
June 20th, 20128:39 am
Its funny how some people still want Durbin jettisoned like yesterday’s news…
Hey Jeff – did you hear the New York Golden Corral had to install speed bumps to anticipate McCann?
June 20th, 20128:40 am
CrαZy… Jeter talking trash, you think?
June 20th, 20128:42 am
It looked like he looked back and said something to Mac.
Probably asked if his wife had any good, respectable, hot friends…
Brian from SC
Tommy Hanson has allowed two or fewer runs in 11 of his 14 starts this year. Whodathunk that? He’s quietly having a very good year.
June 20th, 20128:43 am
Jeff R: up here in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Illinois, many folks would not have a positive assoication of “Senator” Durbin. “Chad” is not “Dick” Durbin in name or persona..
I don’t think New York has any Golden Corrals.
Heyward: five multi-hit games in June (15 games), after five total the first two months (50 games).
Whatever they’ve worked on in the cage seems to be coming into the games, now. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing.
First, I’m impressed if there’s a Golden Corral in Manhattan or, particularly, the Bronx!
Second, those speed bumps don’t stop Sabathia. Our boy, McCann, is more agile than CC, so…
The Braves remain undefeated when Chipper Jones drives in at least one run, now 15-0.
Rookie Simmons is hitting .345 with a .400 OBP, .527 slugging, five extra-base hits and eight RBIs in 16 games, including a whopping .522 (12-for-23) with six multi-hit games in his past seven.
June 20th, 20128:44 am
IlliniBrave, I know, I know. But the “Senator” tag was too obvious to pass up!
DOB: keep these great stats coming! You are making my morning even better ; )
June 20th, 20128:46 am
But not for Mitchell or njbraves and their crew.
June 20th, 20128:47 am
Naaa… It was his first ever AB against Kimbrel I think he might have said something like… WOW!!!
June 20th, 20128:48 am
Jeff R: thing is, that wasn’t meant to be a partisan statement, cuz many folks up here loved Paul Simon and Adlai Stevenson and other great Democrat statesmen. Durbin however is cut from the same slimy Chicago political cloth that brought us the distinction of being the only state in the history of the union with prior governors of both parties in federal prison: Ryan and Blagojevich. KInda pathetic statement about Illinois.
June 20th, 20128:49 am
Ha, the GSL Braves have a pitcher named Jesus Jones!
June 20th, 20128:50 am
June 20th, 20128:51 am
usnavy: “Jesus” in Hebrew means “he saved his people from their sins”. Not sure if this guy or any one guy can save the Braves from their sins of poor ABs, mental baserunning errors, pitching meltdowns, etc.
BMFT is going to dominate those Yanks today. I’m calling 7 IP 5 hits 1 ER 7 K. Series win could really go a long way to get us going again.
June 20th, 20128:53 am
Simmons is hitting over his head, but for now, what a stud he has been. His exploits at the plate are easier to quantify, but his bigger contribution has been in the field. The defensive metrics are off the charts for him so far. Total UZR from Fangraphs (that’s a counting stat, like hits or home runs) is 4th in the major leagues already. The three guys above him (Brendan Ryan, Mike Aviles, Yunel Escobar) have played 4 times as many innings at shortstop.
I think there market is more southern folks who have wheels on there house!
June 20th, 20128:54 am
I’m not all here this morning!!
June 20th, 20128:57 am
Then you’re only half CraZy?
CB – Yeah, a win will do that to you.
Things are turning around. Heyward actually looks good at the plate. Not just last night, but for the last three games he had been hitting the ball hard.
That McCann double last night will probably help his sponsorship contract with Little Debbie snack cakes.
BMFT is going to dominate those Yanks today.
righty fly-ball pitcher and a short RF porch might make a single ER kinda optimistic. But I do like the matchup today.
June 20th, 20128:59 am
Golden Corrals are illegal in NYC.. Bloomberg said so
The triple Heyward had was such a good swing. Great to see him get extended like that.
McFann :Ô: :Ô: :ô:
Jeff R Second, those speed bumps don’t stop Sabathia. Our boy, McCann, is more agile than CC, so…
I didn’t think we’d get a damned thing out of Simmons’ bat, and he will likely slow down as we go along, but holy smokes can that guy pick it at SS. Any offense is just a bonus with him.
June 20th, 20129:00 am
So… what a game that was last night. Huddy with a gutty performance, and the Braves bullpen and offense get him a win and end a 10-game winning streak of the Yankees. Statement game no doubt.
usnavyvolfaninva Golden Corrals are illegal in NYC.. Bloomberg said so
No home runs to RF yet this series. Credit to the pitchers so far. Hoping Heyward and Freeman takes Hughes deep.
June 20th, 20129:01 am
Simmons has suprised all of us with his bat.
But there have been plenty of players that hit better in the bigs than they did coming up through the minors.
Let’s hope he is one of them.
An Oswalt signing a while back sure would be looking good now.
June 20th, 20129:02 am
It’s like torture trying to pitch against these Yankees. You can see why they always end up right near the top of the big leagues in offense. They are experienced, patient, and talented. It’s hard to have a 10-pitch inning against them.
[Simmons] will likely slow down as we go along,
Bryce Harper’s agent certainly hopes so.
IlliniBrave, well, we certainly don’t want to tar Chad with Dick’s misdoings!
June 20th, 20129:03 am
If I was allowed to make up the lineup today, I’d go with……
Kick some Yankee butt!! (Spankee the Yankees…?)
“Golden Corrals are illegal in NYC.. Bloomberg said so…”
Of course, you have to walk like…what…15 feet to get to the next sidewalk cart/stand of unregulated food?
You gotta have hope, all you really need is hope……
Efrim Hoping Heyward and Freeman takes Hughes deep.
Jason Heyward is hitting .340/.375/.585 in 56 plate appearances in June.
Overall, Heyward is hitting .293/.385/.536 in 162 plate appearances vs. RHP in 2012.
June 20th, 20129:04 am
Yeah, but not sure how long he’ll be there. From what I hear, he just left Chicago, and is bound for New Orleans.
June 20th, 20129:07 am
Oh, hey McFann. Did you see that awful thing someone said about McCann?
June 20th, 20129:08 am
Brian from SC – As the appointed stat man for the day shifters, did you read that post yesterday stating the Braves have given up around 80% of their runs with two outs?
Any truth to that and how does that compare to other teams?
That is your assignment for the day.
I’m going to go ahead and guess that Fredi will do the following:
June 20th, 20129:09 am
Look for Uggla to start heating up, too. McCann has looked awfully good at the plate this last week, added to Heyward’s good work. Sandwich Uggla, and he’ll be harder to pitch around.
All these guys don’t have to en fuego at the same time, but the team needs more than two of them going good.
June 20th, 20129:11 am
I can do that for you, Jimmy. Give me a few minutes.
Sandwich Uggla, and he’ll be harder to pitch around.
Now That is a Statement Sandwich if I have ever heard of one…
June 20th, 20129:12 am
3 days rest at Coors Field? Time to weed out the weaklings…pitch limit or not.
June 20th, 20129:13 am

I am eagerly awaiting Mitchell’s rampage about Roger McDowell’s training techniques causing Beachy’s arm to require TJ surgery. I have always though Mitchell must have been at the same Mets game as Kramer and Newman and some of Roger’s spit must have got on him after the game.
June 20th, 20129:16 am
When I read that post from ncscoots, I got stuck on..McCann, plate and sandwich. If he could have just worked in a “pecan swirl” or “ding-dong”….
I am eagerly awaiting Mitchell’s rampage about Roger McDowell’s training techniques causing Beachy’s arm to require TJ surgery
I know this is like differentiating between a stupid person and an idiot, but wasn’t that Robert?
Either that, or retire as the greatest-hitting shortstop in the history of the game.
