Lead by the much unheralded Chad Durbin.
Durbin threw 7 pitches to the three batters he faced in his inning. 6 were strikes. Take away his poor start to the season, he has pitched really well.

RHSP ZEKE SPRUILL, RHSP DAVID HALE, and RHRP GARY MORAN each go one inning of relief allowing a combined 3 H, and one unearned run with one walk and three strike-outs. SPRUILL gets a hold.
Hi Frank,I would like to pitch for the Braves,I can help your bullpen,I want to show other teams that I can still pitch and be a closer again, sign me for the rest of this season so I can help.I will cheap.
I’ll admit that I’ve been waiting for Simmons to fall to earth, with the bat. I now it’s only been two weeks, but I had zero expectation that he would bring it as strongly as he has. Even his wallk rate is up there with anybody on the team, sans Uggla. He had shown some improvement in that area at AA, but who could have expected him to bring that with him to the bigs?
Kimbrel: 15 cons. scoreless apps since May 8, 11-for-11 saves, .061 opp. average (3-for-49), 2 BB, 24 K Durbin: 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8 — 15-1/3 innings, six hits, .122 OPP avg
Durbin: 19 consecutive scoreless appearances since May 8
Well that’s something. He had a more dubious HR streak earlier in the season. Reminds me of Uggla last year. Horrible to start, off the wall afterwards.
Not sure if this has already been discussed on here, but the Rockies are moving to a 4-man rotation.
They’re going to inforce a very strict 75 pitch limit on there pitchers. Once they hit 75 or if they finish an AB and have close to 75 they’re taking them out.
Heyward is hitting .340 (18-for-53) with eight extra-base hits (two homers) and 10 strikeouts in 15 June games (53 at-bats), with a .375 OBP and .585 slugging.
This after hitting .200 in May (30 games) with nine extra-base hits, 30 strikeouts in 95 at-bats, with a .315 OBP and .389 slugging.
Jeff R: up here in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Illinois, many folks would not have a positive assoication of “Senator” Durbin. “Chad” is not “Dick” Durbin in name or persona..
Rookie Simmons is hitting .345 with a .400 OBP, .527 slugging, five extra-base hits and eight RBIs in 16 games, including a whopping .522 (12-for-23) with six multi-hit games in his past seven.
Jeff R: thing is, that wasn’t meant to be a partisan statement, cuz many folks up here loved Paul Simon and Adlai Stevenson and other great Democrat statesmen. Durbin however is cut from the same slimy Chicago political cloth that brought us the distinction of being the only state in the history of the union with prior governors of both parties in federal prison: Ryan and Blagojevich. KInda pathetic statement about Illinois.
usnavy: “Jesus” in Hebrew means “he saved his people from their sins”. Not sure if this guy or any one guy can save the Braves from their sins of poor ABs, mental baserunning errors, pitching meltdowns, etc.
Simmons is hitting over his head, but for now, what a stud he has been. His exploits at the plate are easier to quantify, but his bigger contribution has been in the field. The defensive metrics are off the charts for him so far. Total UZR from Fangraphs (that’s a counting stat, like hits or home runs) is 4th in the major leagues already. The three guys above him (Brendan Ryan, Mike Aviles, Yunel Escobar) have played 4 times as many innings at shortstop.
CB – Yeah, a win will do that to you.
Things are turning around. Heyward actually looks good at the plate. Not just last night, but for the last three games he had been hitting the ball hard.
That McCann double last night will probably help his sponsorship contract with Little Debbie snack cakes.
I didn’t think we’d get a damned thing out of Simmons’ bat, and he will likely slow down as we go along, but holy smokes can that guy pick it at SS. Any offense is just a bonus with him.
So… what a game that was last night. Huddy with a gutty performance, and the Braves bullpen and offense get him a win and end a 10-game winning streak of the Yankees. Statement game no doubt.
Simmons has suprised all of us with his bat.
But there have been plenty of players that hit better in the bigs than they did coming up through the minors.
Let’s hope he is one of them.
It’s like torture trying to pitch against these Yankees. You can see why they always end up right near the top of the big leagues in offense. They are experienced, patient, and talented. It’s hard to have a 10-pitch inning against them.
Brian from SC – As the appointed stat man for the day shifters, did you read that post yesterday stating the Braves have given up around 80% of their runs with two outs?
Any truth to that and how does that compare to other teams?
That is your assignment for the day.
Look for Uggla to start heating up, too. McCann has looked awfully good at the plate this last week, added to Heyward’s good work. Sandwich Uggla, and he’ll be harder to pitch around.
All these guys don’t have to en fuego at the same time, but the team needs more than two of them going good.
I am eagerly awaiting Mitchell’s rampage about Roger McDowell’s training techniques causing Beachy’s arm to require TJ surgery. I have always though Mitchell must have been at the same Mets game as Kramer and Newman and some of Roger’s spit must have got on him after the game.

No home runs to RF yet this series. Credit to the pitchers so far. Hoping Heyward and Freeman takes Hughes deep.

[Simmons] will likely slow down as we go along,
Bryce Harper’s agent certainly hopes so.

If I was allowed to make up the lineup today, I’d go with……
Bourn CF
Prado 3B
Heyward RF
Uggla 2B
McCann C
Chipper DH
Diaz LF
Simmons SS

Of course, you have to walk like…what…15 feet to get to the next sidewalk cart/stand of unregulated food?

Jason Heyward is hitting .340/.375/.585 in 56 plate appearances in June.
Overall, Heyward is hitting .293/.385/.536 in 162 plate appearances vs. RHP in 2012.

Ha, the GSL Braves have a pitcher named Jesus Jones!
Yeah, but not sure how long he’ll be there. From what I hear, he just left Chicago, and is bound for New Orleans.

Brian from SC – As the appointed stat man for the day shifters, did you read that post yesterday stating the Braves have given up around 80% of their runs with two outs?
Any truth to that and how does that compare to other teams?
That is your assignment for the day.

I’m going to go ahead and guess that Fredi will do the following:
CF Bourn
LF Prado
C McCann
2B Uggla
DH Jones
RF Heyward
1B Freeman
SS Simmons
3B Francisco

Look for Uggla to start heating up, too. McCann has looked awfully good at the plate this last week, added to Heyward’s good work. Sandwich Uggla, and he’ll be harder to pitch around.
All these guys don’t have to en fuego at the same time, but the team needs more than two of them going good.

Not sure if this has already been discussed on here, but the Rockies are moving to a 4-man rotation.
3 days rest at Coors Field? Time to weed out the weaklings…pitch limit or not.

[Simmons] will likely slow down as we go along,
Either that, or retire as the greatest-hitting shortstop in the history of the game.
