Our old buddy JEFF LOCKE hurls a six-inning one-run gem at the G-Men who hurl a two-run nine inning gem back at the INDIANS. Unfortunately, the INDIANS’ reliefers shut down the BRAVES’ bats and prevail 2-1. A real pitching duel despite 16 combined hits by the two clubs.
RHSP JAIR JURJJENS [5.18 ERA] 1.0 IP, no-hits, 2 BB, 2 SO.
RHRP BUDDY CARLYSLE [2.11 ERA] throws a four-inning, two-hit, shutout relief masterpiece with one walk and seven SO’s. BUDDY is standing tall and looking good.
LHRP DUSTY HUGHES [BS 1, 3.26 ERA] starts the BRAVES ball rolling downhill with two-innngs of decent work, but the defensive infield contributes the only error of the game, and that ultimately proves to be the difference in the contest. 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO.
RHRP JAYE CHAPMAN [L 2-3, 2.70 ERA] 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 2 SO. Gives up two doubles, and can’t prevent to winning run from scoring in the top of the ninth.
C J.C. BOSCAN [.194 BA] 1-3, 1 SO, 1 SAC, 1 PB [7]. JC’s PB doesn’t figure in the loss.

Let’s not over look the bullpen last night.
Four shutout innings of one hit, one walk ball.
Lead by the much unheralded Chad Durbin.
Durbin threw 7 pitches to the three batters he faced in his inning. 6 were strikes. Take away his poor start to the season, he has pitched really well.
Great game overall by the Braves.
Remember, it was a statement game!

I’ll admit that I’ve been waiting for Simmons to fall to earth, with the bat. I now it’s only been two weeks, but I had zero expectation that he would bring it as strongly as he has. Even his wallk rate is up there with anybody on the team, sans Uggla. He had shown some improvement in that area at AA, but who could have expected him to bring that with him to the bigs?
He don’t look shook, and that’s a fact.

Not sure if this has already been discussed on here, but the Rockies are moving to a 4-man rotation.
They’re going to inforce a very strict 75 pitch limit on there pitchers. Once they hit 75 or if they finish an AB and have close to 75 they’re taking them out.

Heyward is hitting .340 (18-for-53) with eight extra-base hits (two homers) and 10 strikeouts in 15 June games (53 at-bats), with a .375 OBP and .585 slugging.
This after hitting .200 in May (30 games) with nine extra-base hits, 30 strikeouts in 95 at-bats, with a .315 OBP and .389 slugging.

Whatever they’ve worked on in the cage seems to be coming into the games, now. Muscle memory is a wonderful thing.

Simmons is hitting over his head, but for now, what a stud he has been. His exploits at the plate are easier to quantify, but his bigger contribution has been in the field. The defensive metrics are off the charts for him so far. Total UZR from Fangraphs (that’s a counting stat, like hits or home runs) is 4th in the major leagues already. The three guys above him (Brendan Ryan, Mike Aviles, Yunel Escobar) have played 4 times as many innings at shortstop.

Things are turning around. Heyward actually looks good at the plate. Not just last night, but for the last three games he had been hitting the ball hard.
That McCann double last night will probably help his sponsorship contract with Little Debbie snack cakes.

Simmons has suprised all of us with his bat.
But there have been plenty of players that hit better in the bigs than they did coming up through the minors.

It’s like torture trying to pitch against these Yankees. You can see why they always end up right near the top of the big leagues in offense. They are experienced, patient, and talented. It’s hard to have a 10-pitch inning against them.

Look for Uggla to start heating up, too. McCann has looked awfully good at the plate this last week, added to Heyward’s good work. Sandwich Uggla, and he’ll be harder to pitch around.
All these guys don’t have to en fuego at the same time, but the team needs more than two of them going good.

I am eagerly awaiting Mitchell’s rampage about Roger McDowell’s training techniques causing Beachy’s arm to require TJ surgery. I have always though Mitchell must have been at the same Mets game as Kramer and Newman and some of Roger’s spit must have got on him after the game.
