Fredi Gonzalez has incurred a SEVERE BRAIN TEAR, while trying to think.
After consulting brain tear specialists, the situation looks hopeless; the damage is simply too great – and continues to worsen – especially when Gonzalez gets anywhere close to baseball.
Extended prognosis: Gonzalez to go on the MANAGERIAL DISABLED LIST indefinitely.
Frank Wren now hurriedly searches for a new manager.

The Braves have prospects they want to keep stockpiled in their system, but they might just have to part with one or two in a deal for a pitcher if they hope to make a strong playoff push the rest of the way.
Only two I’d consider off-limits are Teheran and Vizcaino. I’d guess teams would be asking for Gilmartin, Bethancourt, Graham and perhaps to a lesser extent, Todd Cunningham and Matt Lipka.

They DON’T NEED PITCHING! Just score some runs. McCann and Chipper need to step up or the Braves need to move on from those two. Can’t be relied upon at this point anymore. Pitching will be fine, but this offense has to get some consistency.

Update on the defensive switch and its possible effect:
Since Simmons took over at SS, the Braves have given up a .160 batting average on ground balls, not including errors. Before the call-up, it was a league-worst .274.
This is a major contributor to the Braves’ improved pitching performance in June. It’s still a small sample size, and that .160 will go up (it’s a little “too” low right now), but the difference has been like night and day.

Here’s the thing: any trade currency spent for a pitcher this year means less to spend on trade deals in the offseason which means a greater reliance on free agency. If they end up having more money than players for acquisitions, I worry about how that might play out.
I know you have to play the game that’s in front of you, but still…

Here’s one more stat I find telling: Simmons (.412, 7-for-17) is only Braves player hitting above .288 in the seventh inning or later. Everyone else but Prado (.288) hitting .270 or lower in the late innings, including Heyward (.218) and McCann (.145, 8-for-55 with one RBI).
So… the guys who are in shape and not gassed by the 5th inning continue to hit, while the fatties are day-dreaming about donuts and beef jerky and missing everything thrown their way (with the exception of Heyward, who doesn’t hit regardless of the inning).
Interesting.

Frankly, I am against giving up more quality prospects for a rental pitcher and/or player. This is still a young team with a bright future with 3 starters (whenever Freeman ever returns) age 22 and with the exception of Hudson all of their key pitchers being in their mid-20s or younger.
Delgado in particular is showing signs of improvement and to a lesser degree Minor as well. I realize that their growing pains (and Teheran’s as well if he is finally called up and put in the rotation) will be difficult and perhaps cost them a chance at the playoffs this year. But I say don’t trade prospects off a young team on the rise for player(s) who won’t guarantee a playoff appearance this year and use the money coming off the books on the Lowe and Chipper Jones contracts to improve the team this offseason.
Just my 2 cents.

Francouer’s first 2.5 seasons: .280/.319/.463, 100 OPS+(1,656 PA’s)
Heyward’s first 2.5 seasons(roughly): .255/.356/.430, 113 OPS+(1,328 PA’s)
And my guess is Heyward’s next 300 plate appearances is going to widen the gap.

I hate to say it but the braves have never had the rotation to get to the World Series this season. We simply do not match up with the aces around the league through a 7 game series. When some of these young guys season up a bit then we’ll talk. In the meantime, let’s count Chipper’s final stat tallies and wait for his and a few other’s money to come off the books and start fresh next season. I guess what I’m getting at is I don’t want to give up prospects for a fruitless quest. Without a few aces, you simply cannot get to the series.

wouldn’t it be better to acknowledge that this isn’t their year than to trade grade A prospects for the hope of hope of making the playoffs. To me that would be the more prudent way to go.

bville, I agree… gotta take stock and make a real honest evaluation of the team… if the horses aren’t there to get them to October, which I don’t know if they are, then you need to hold on to the prospects and work hard during the offseason to assemble a winner.
I don’t know that the team can make that call, though, given their successful week here and their successful week there. Those successful weeks, as rare as they may be, have given the FO hope. Hope + an unrealistic view of your team = trade deadline disaster.

Getting another rent-a-player for premium prospects would be a mistake. Instead they should give every opportunity to working this out in house with available talent. Besides, with the current field manager still making too many head-scratching player dicisions, it is not worth mortgaging the future of the organization just to stay in the race. This team has traded away too much young talent already.

Why wouldn’t someone propose “just keep sending them out there” regarding the Braves’ offense?
This is baseball, after all. Players will go through ups and downs. A .300 hitter isn’t going to go 3 for his every 10 ABs, which is why some of us tend to make a stink about small sample sizes.
Buy, hey, no one can force you out of incorrectly believing that performance or results in 8, 10, 12 games means that a player is destined to keep up the pace of those last 8, 10, 12 games in perpetuity.

With the draft over and many of the top picks having already signed, the market for international players has started to become more clear as July 2 approaches. We have already profiled many of the top players for this year’s international signing period, but here is a look at some of the other notable names to follow for this year’s class.
The Braves have brought a handful of promising pitchers through their international program in recent years. This year sources say the Braves have their sights set on Yeralf Torres, a 16-year-old Venezuelan righthander from Barquisimeto who trains with Jose Montero. Torres is 6-foot-1, 165 pounds and has an excellent fastball, touching the low-90s with lively action from a delivery with some drop-and-drive to it. He will have to learn to throw more strikes and improve his secondary pitches, which includes a mid-70s curveball that’s ahead of his changeup.

Minor either gets a 1-2-3 inning, or falls apart when the leadoff man gets on base and within 30 seconds 6 runs have scored. You could see it in his face in the 5th inning last night. He needs to come out of the rotation and work some long relief. He can still be effective for 2-3 innings so long as he does not have to come in with runners on base.

That right there says all you need to know about the Atlanta Braves “offense”. As horrible a manager as Fredi is, and HE IS the worst manager in MLB right now hands down. Even Joe Girardi couldn’t produce wins with this embarrassingly anemic “offense”. I have questioned this team’s heart and effort from opening day, especially since ending last year with the worst collapse in MLB history, losing 20 of 30. I mean this team just doesnt try….period. I don’t care if I get blasted….it’s pathetic for this amount of talent to get shutout or score a single run on an almost nightly basis. I HATE how this team is full of wusses who sit out half the season with “dry eyes, a stomach bug, and a bruise” like the 3,4, and 5 hitters in our lineup did earlier this year. Its disgusting, and EVERY single one of them with the exception of Bourn and Prado is underperforming severely. That tells you one thing…they don’t care and are going through the motions. That falls on Fredi, but it also falls on the leaders of this offense, which has none. Freddie Freeman is underperforming, Jason Heyward is underperforming, Chipper Jones is underperforming, Brian McCann is underperforming, Dan Uggla is underperforming slightly, Eric Hinske is underperforming, Jack Wilson is underperforming, Matt Diaz is underperforming. These are not opinions, every one of those guys is hitting lower than there career averages, with most significantly lower. I mean when 70 percent of your offense is underperforming EVERYTHING is wrong about the team. Simply put that means the manager is an inefficient leader/motivator, laziness in putting in work in the batting cages, poor attitudes, loser mentality/culture in the clubhouse, poor scouting of pitchers, poor conditioning by the hitters, poor efforts ALL THE WAY AROUND….. DISGUSTED…..I usually go to 3-4 games a year, but am boycotting the rest of the year, and am feverishly convincing others not to attend games. I write a weekly letter to the Braves explaining WHY they are such a poorly run, lazy, country club organization and HOW other more modern organizations are passing them by the minute.

To borrow a quote from the Joker in the 90’s version of Batman, I think the whole team needs an enima. I mean this figuratively, not literally. We have the talent, we have the arms, but the team just seems so sluggish. I know people blame Fredi, or this or that, but it’s the entire team… not just one person. I wish I could provide suggestions, but I know no one would listen, nor would it be knowledgable advice.
I will always be a Braves fan and will always support the team, but I also have a feeling this is going to be a long summer…

Wren can’t make deals when there aren’t injuries. when the Braves are cornered, he’ll be fleeced. we have 5 starters with Teheran. how often is a 5th starter needed. Medlen can be thrown in if needed.
the guy to deal is Bourn, not prospects. he’s leaving anyway.
too bad the Braves wasted so many draft picks in 2006-they should have been ready 6 yrs later.
Minor apparently loses his stuff from a stretch position when men are on base. maybe he should use a full windup all the time and have them steal bases instead.
with the trio of Liberty Media, Wren and Fredi G, I have full confidence that we are not making the playoffs the rest of the decade, if they last that long.

How nice is it that the Yankees have a guy like cc to rely on. How nice is it that the lowely Mets have Johan to rely on .
