Carroll, frankly someone needs to directly ask (make that challenge) Fredi Gonzalez on why he would wait until his rookie pitcher (Delgado) had his foot on the rubber before yelling out for him to pitch from the stretch? The manager is the one at fault for that balk RBI!

And one more point I want to make on that balk ….

Bobby Cox would have been a man and come right out and taken the blame for it. He would have taken the pressure off a rookie pitcher like Delgado by taking the public criticism for distracting him at the worst possible time. He certainly would not have criticized him for it. Fredi’s post game presser directly asserted that it was the only acceptable baseball play and therefore put the blame squarely on Delgado for not anticipating what needed to be done.

There is truth to that, but a rookie pitcher has enough on his mind focusing on the next pitch. The signal to pitch from the stretch should have been clearly made well before Delgado took the mound. Fredi also could have directed David Ross to go to the mound and remind Delgado of that. Bobby Cox would have anticipated the need for that by better appreciating that a rookie pitcher under pressure may not be that situationally aware.

This is why Fredi isn’t going to earn the same kind of player loyalty as Bobby Cox did. Even when the player was all wrong, Cox would find a way to shift the blame to him. The only time Bobby called out a player was for lacking hustle.

The other great difference is that every time a player got into an argument with an umpire, Cox was immediately out on the field to interceed to keep the player in the game. This is the big reason why Cox got ejected so much, but the players loved him for always having their backs. Fredi never does this. The players are always on their own.

I thought Gonzalez would be more like Cox in both these vital areas. He is not, and I think having seen the man in action for nearly half a season, I can see why the Marlins organization cut him loose. It is of secondary importance how effective Fredi is at making the right strategic moves. The biggest problem is that Fredi’s doesn’t appear able to inspire the player’s loyalty like Bobby Cox could. Perhaps that is too much of a comparison to make because I doubt any other manager ever could. That was Bobby’s greatest forte and a prime reason why the man won all those games and will be enshrined in Cooperstown.

Still, Fredi worked with Bobby and saw the man in action. It’s not too much to expect Fredi to get out there and risk getting ejected simply to take up for his players. And it is certainly not too much to ask that Fredi take the blame squarely when his own actions contributed directly to a negative play on the field.

In my view, it is well past time for the entire AJC sports staff to start putting pressure on Fredi to answer for this latest situation of his own causing, and then having done that perhaps the man will learn to better follow the example of his mentor and soon-to-be hall of fame predecessor!

It is so easy for HomoSolo to call out armchairs & want to give them binkies. Where is he now? He calls out negative Nancy’s to show themselves when the club is winning. Where are you, sir? If you’re still willing to stick up for Fredi, show it. If we can’t criticize, tell me now. Show your baseball acumen and explain why we don’t have the “right” to complain because we’re not as good as the players or the “manager”. Please, defend one instance of this debauchery.

The Braves are floundering. There is no sence of “steady” from the leadership. The GM brings up guys and send them down the next day with no rhyme or reason. The manager seems as shaken as anyone.

We miss real leaders (Bobby).

Carroll,

Is DOB up to about 12 weeks paid vacation now with the AJC? Tell him again that “Larry” would love to have a job like his…traveling to great cities, hanging out at the clubhouse buffets, mingling with the players and, best of all, work 2-3 weeks then off a week.

Nize! Really nize!

I’d suggest you email tough questions to Tim Tucker. Like the Liberty Media “payroll” questions that would be a waste of time to ask until Tim asked and actually got answers…Well, unless your questions pertain to a player’s divorce or BBQ. Then I’d ask away.

Fans are asking for some changes in Braves management. It will never happen. They are of the mentality of an old mans club. They don’t listen to the facts. When Bobby Cox couldn’t win worth a damn in post season and he retires Then who they hire?? Someone that Cox recommends and exactly of the same mental system. That sure was a brilliant idea wasn’t it.
Damn someone for once, get some balls and clean house. Get rid of Chipper and his $14 million salary. He has sucked enough money out of the club the past few years. Sure he was a damn good player in the past, but how many years ago was that. What have you done for me lately.

Perhaps if Larry was a better leader on the field, everyone wouldn’t be showing so much frustration. Or maybe he should go ahead and retire now so he can handle his divorce. I do agree that Fredi is too passive and doesn’t seem to support his players. When was the last time he came out to argue a call, and there have been a lot of bad ones recently.

Hi Carroll, hope all is well. Is anyone in the lockerroom discussing why it seems like the entire lineup is either hot or cold at one time? It seems like they will score a ton for a few games in a row regardless of how good or poor the pitching is against them, then not score a run for a week.

I don’t get it. Just wondered if anyone was talking about how to fix that.

Thanks,

P.

You all know me. I am the BIGGEST Atlanta Team Homer there is. From the Braves, Falcons to the Hawks. All this year I have preached patience, telling you all that we will be ok. I still believe that because you see I am a fan. It pains me to have this leave my lips…………it might be time to see if Tito is really interested in staying at ESPN. Fredi, I have done all I can to protect you, fight for you, but this team does not react to your leadership for some reason. I just dont get it. Check into Leo as well. I never remember our pitchers having so many injuries when Leo had them on a throwing program…………cant be coincidence……..can it? I still believe, but Fredi if it is going to happen you have to LIGHT A FIRE UNDER SOMEONE’s AZZ! You cant be Bobby! Find your way to lead and do it man. This team has never had a fire that burns from game to game! I remember when Uggla played for Florida he played with an ATTITUDE! He comes here and adopts the Braves “business approach”. We need a leader in the clubhouse and for someone to step up and push and stop following. Come on guys I believe but we go to do it now before it is to late! Go Braves!

typical negative braves fans asking for the heads of management, coaches, chipper when we are not winning. cant win them all, cant make the right decision every time. and to the individual who suggested chipper be more of an leader on the field??? are you serious?? he is basically the players coach out there, when he is in the line up and when he is riding the bench. come on man!

i am so sick of everyone being so negative. this is why Atlanta is dubbed the worst sports city in America.

I’ll answer for Carroll: No, only 11 weeks.

By the way, you really want to “mingle” with players, don’t ya? I’ll assume (hope) you’re a young fan, if you’re pining for that.

Oh, and we hate to ruin your impression of the job, but no writer or other media member is allowed in the training room, players’ lounge or dining areas, much less allowed to eat from the clubhouse buffet. In fact, I know of no time in the history of baseball when writers ate from clubhouse buffets. Please elaborate if you know different.

Thanks, Larry. Good luck.

To BravesFan:
In response to your comment about typical negative fans. It would be different if it was only this year but after last year’s choke and the previous few years where the Braves haven’t did diddly. So now the Braves haven’t did anything for years and we are supposed to just say nothing. That is the problem. Braves management hasn’t done anything. Same good ole guys. It is like a club. We all stick together no matter if we lose or what. That doesn’t cut it. My god they are getting paid big big bucks and aren’t producing any positive results.

As for Chipper, he is the biggest hypocrite there is. His excuse for staying another year with the Braves so they can win. His only reason is that $14 million going into his bank account plus all the fringe benefits and a life time job with the Braves after he retires. Nothing separates him from being a muncher or welfare case. $14 million is a joke. Has he earned that kind of pay this year. Get real people. And folks face it, some of the players are receiving welfare checks for doing nothing.

The Braves haven’t accomplished anything in the post season since trading away David Justice after 1995 world series victory. But of course he didn’t fit in with the good ole boys in the club. He was a rebel. Well they sure screwed then and ever since.

Now ask me how I really feel. lol. Tell it like it is.

I can talk doom and glpom with the best of them. However, we should all take a step back and realize that the team is 35-31 at this time and in second place. I do realize that the trend is downward and you can pencil in three losses coming up as the Braves will probably bow down once again to the mighty Yankees. Still, you would think this team’s record is 10-56 right now with the way we (yes, I include me) talk about them.

Of course, having written that above, I concur that the Braves need to change directions with their management and coaches. The Braves need a fresh new start. After all, the goal is to win the World Series and not meekly flame out at the end of the season or early in the playoffs.

I am sure the Braves. like most teams, would love to score five or more runs per game without hitting a homerun. The DECISION to do so is quite separate from whether they can EXECUTE such a scoring plan. The answer to whether the Braves can execute this is surely NO! We will revisit in ten or more days.

hey i like all that except: Javy Lopez as manager, and TP as hitting coach. we went down that road. Lopez would be bold, but is he manager material? I personally have no idea. is he in any kind of manager role right now? Mazzone wont come back, but i wish he would. And durango wouldnt be able to hit MLB pitching. he has too many holes in his swing.
