About the Braves:
Batting: The Braves come off back-to-back shutouts after managing only eight hits in two games against the Orioles. They scored only six runs in three losses to the Yankees last week. Brian McCann had back-to-back multi-hit games in that series, which included two doubles and a home run. Matt Diaz is 6-for-12 for his career against Sabathia, including a bases-clearing double on Tuesday night.
Pitching: Braves starters allowed only seven earned runs in 18 1/3 innings against the Yankees last week (3.43 ERA). Mike Minor was the best of the three, holding the Yankees to one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings in what might have been his finest major league outing. The Braves lost 6-4 that night after a six-run implosion by Jonny Venters and Cory Gearrin in the eighth inning.
Miscellaneous: Chipper Jones will play his first and last series at the new Yankee Stadium. Freddie Freeman hopes to return to the lineup Tuesday after missing five games to rest his swollen left index finger. He received two cortisone shots in the joint on Saturday.
About the Yankees:
Batting: The Yankees have won nine in a row, including three straight series sweeps of the Mets, Braves and Nationals. They’ve outscored opponents in June 72-33. Curtis Granderson is 11-for-33 (.333) with two doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs in the past eight games. His two-run home run off Hudson was the game-winner in a 3-2 Yankees win Wednesday. He has 21 homers, third best in the majors behind Adam Dunn (23) and Josh Hamilton (22).
Pitching: Yankees starters are 11-1 with a 1.92 ERA in June. Sabathia gave up four runs on 10 hits in seven innings to get outpitched by Minor on Tuesday night. Former Brave Boone Logan has pitched 10 1/3 straight scoreless innings in relief, and former Brave Rafael Soriano is 13 out of 14 in save opportunities in place of closer Mariano Rivera, who’s out for the season after knee surgery.
Miscellaneous: The Yankees’ nine-game winning streak is their longest since May of 2009. They’ve won 14 of their past 17 overall. The Yankees are 20-0 this season when Rodriguez drives in at least one run.
