Series preview: at Yankees
When (TV): 7:05 p.m. Monday – Wednesday (SPSO)
Radio: 680, 93.7, 100.5
Probable starting pitchers:
Monday: Braves LH Mike Minor (3-4, 6.01 ERA) vs. LH C.C. Sabathia (8-3, 3.70)
Tuesday: Braves RH Tim Hudson (4-3, 3.90) vs. RH Hiroki Kuroda (6-6, 3.43)
Wednesday: Braves RH Tommy Hanson (7-4, 3.32) vs. RH Phil Hughes (7-5, 4.50)
About the Braves:
Batting: The Braves come off back-to-back shutouts after managing only eight hits in two games against the Orioles. They scored only six runs in three losses to the Yankees last week. Brian McCann had back-to-back multi-hit games in that series, which included two doubles and a home run. Matt Diaz is 6-for-12 for his career against Sabathia, including a bases-clearing double on Tuesday night.
Pitching: Braves starters allowed only seven earned runs in 18 1/3 innings against the Yankees last week (3.43 ERA). Mike Minor was the best of the three, holding the Yankees to one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings in what might have been his finest major league outing. The Braves lost 6-4 that night after a six-run implosion by Jonny Venters and Cory Gearrin in the eighth inning.
Miscellaneous: Chipper Jones will play his first and last series at the new Yankee Stadium. Freddie Freeman hopes to return to the lineup Tuesday after missing five games to rest his swollen left index finger. He received two cortisone shots in the joint on Saturday.
About the Yankees:
Batting: The Yankees have won nine in a row, including three straight series sweeps of the Mets, Braves and Nationals. They’ve outscored opponents in June 72-33. Curtis Granderson is 11-for-33 (.333) with two doubles, four home runs and 11 RBIs in the past eight games. His two-run home run off Hudson was the game-winner in a 3-2 Yankees win Wednesday. He has 21 homers, third best in the majors behind Adam Dunn (23) and Josh Hamilton (22).
Pitching: Yankees starters are 11-1 with a 1.92 ERA in June. Sabathia gave up four runs on 10 hits in seven innings to get outpitched by Minor on Tuesday night. Former Brave Boone Logan has pitched 10 1/3 straight scoreless innings in relief, and former Brave Rafael Soriano is 13 out of 14 in save opportunities in place of closer Mariano Rivera, who’s out for the season after knee surgery.
Miscellaneous: The Yankees’ nine-game winning streak is their longest since May of 2009. They’ve won 14 of their past 17 overall. The Yankees are 20-0 this season when Rodriguez drives in at least one run.

Actually think we might win 1 or 2 games in this series; doesn’t negate the fact the Braves are a very average team with a clueless manager.

Dear Fredi,
After Minor outduels CC again, please don’t make a retarded bullpen move to blow the game.
Sincerely

Yankees are turds, problem is, Braves couldn’t hit their way out of a paper bag and the Yanks do seem to have decent pitching. Time to cut some dead weight, then get some of the nicked up starters playing baseball instead of getting manicures. I’m tired of this losing crap….

BRAVES NEED RIGHTHANDED BATS. Until Frank Wren goes out there and proves himself willing to give something to get something, the Bad-News Braves will keep getting shut out by the likes of the pitching-thin Baltimore Orioles. It’s almost embarrassing to be a Braves fan these days.

It is so easy for HomoSolo to call out armchairs & want to give them binkies. Where is he now? He calls out negative Nancy’s to show themselves when the club is winning. Where are you, sir? If you’re still willing to stick up for Fredi, show it. If we can’t criticize, tell me now. Show your baseball acumen and explain why we don’t have the “right” to complain because we’re not as good as the players or the “manager”. Please, defend one instance of this debauchery.

@David the Shepherd;Agreed Totally, no better put. When things going good, oh where are the naysayers, I’m a die-hard as they come, I want the team to win so badly, & know you the same way, most of the fans here are, & it gets tiredsome of the let downs, wonderin’ is the teams bats ever gonna be productive again. Cause’ I’m tired of the other teams success seems to come easier to them against us(now more than ever). A few weeks ago, I was fired up when we were goin’ good, easy to do, & easy to criticize but w/ valid reason. Who can truely say if you’re a true fan wanting you’re team to win, & they been losin’( & I’ve accepted the fact of them being lousy, that they were not gonna win) been followin’ them in the no-good days of “77″ up to now. The ups & downs, the re-building years being patient(enduring) all the chief noc-a-homa yells ehoing in old Atl-ful-co. stadium. This is a good team, & it’s frustrating, even realizing all the adversity of the injuries, everyone has them(seems to be happening more to us lately last few years) but many of us criticize just because either the guys filling in not stepping up, bad decisions or moves made that did not pan out. Every team has to make adjustments while facing adversity, & it seems our adjustments are not being successful. Producing wins the fans, right now the team isn’t producing. Criticism hits anytime if wins aren’t coming. I believe this team can win, but will it at the end?

Fire gonzales now and mcdowell. Then hire leo mazzone back and hire larry bowa. For too long the braves have had this laid back it’s ok approch that is way even though they won 14 division titles they only won 1 world series and lost 4 others. They need some fire in that dugout. This look at the job terry collins is doing with a club that does not have half the talent that the braves have. Finally trade dan uggla but that will not happen.

Why do righty bats switch to hitting lefty? The only lefty bats who hit righty are Denny Lemaster and Mike Minor. McCann, Freeman, Bourn, Hinske.

Could be interesting. Braves hit a lot of warning track shots in other stadiums. They will land in the 20th row in that ridiculous pinball machine called Yankee Stadium. A lot of high-scoring long-@ssed games coming up. Hate American League ball.

Six games in hitter friendly parks, the Braves have to show some offensive life. Getting to use the DH is no advantage for the Braves — Hinske? Diaz? Please.
Carroll — who won’t the Braves call up Boscan to have a third catcher and they can DH McCann for six games. They get his bat and rest his legs. Just asking.

Sorry … WHY won’t the Braves call up a 3rd catcher? So McCann can DH.

Are we in a rebuilding era? I find it difficult thinking of the Braves as true contenders. We have a “retired” player playing a few games here and there. Chipper’s old from a baseball perspective, but he deserves our respect! He’s been a GREAT player during his career. Anyway, when Chipper does not play we have to take our MVP player (Prado) out of his position or use Fransisco(?) at third. If we use Prado, who plays LF? Diaz? Hinsky(?)? At short, we have another rookie, albiet one with outstanding potential. Uggla at second and Freeman at first. CF is solud and Jason is Jason. I’m not sure exactly what thay means anymore. BUT…our pitching is so very young and unexperienced and unproven. Let’s dump the “deadwood” and build another winner but the team (Wren) apparently doesn’t know how. Wren inherited a winner. Not sure what he has done to improve it lately. Admitting being in a rebuilding mode would be a PR nightmare.
If we’re not in a rebuildong mode….we should be.

Screwball, I’d use Chipper at DH. Put Constanza in LF and Prado at 3b.

Denver (Denny) Lemaster…wow, always nice hearing the names of past Brave’s.
Atlanta has not had a decent right handed hitter since Andrew Jones left, should be obvious by now too management. Dan Uggla can’t do it himself, he would probably benifit with another right handed Power hitter as would all the lefty swingers.
Mr. Wrenn pry Travis Wood from the Cub’s.. he has shown flashes of brillance with the Reds and Cubs, lefty who gives innings. Also seeing the Braves do things on the cheap nowadays won’t make you open the vault and disturb the Cobb Webs.
Last but not least, the Braves need arms and Oakland needs a hitter. Oakland has a real knack for developing fine young pitchers, other teams know this why don’t the Brave’s Brass? Ownership is playing our fans as suckers, attendance is constantly good but ownership wants to nickle and dime it. Say what you will… I miss Ted Turner!
