Jurrjens to be recalled for Friday start in Boston

Jair Jurrjens hasn’t had a whole lot to get excited about of late, spending the better part of two months in Triple-A trying to get himself back on track. But he got a boost on Sunday when the Braves let him know they plan for him to pitch Friday night in Boston against the Red Sox.

Jurrjens last started for the Braves on April 23 in Los Angeles, when he gave up five runs in three innings, to bring him to 0-2 with a 9.37 ERA in four starts to open the season. He was told after the game the Braves were sending him to Gwinnett.

Jurrjens is 3-4 with a 5.27 ERA in nine starts in Triple-A. He has seen improvement with his fastball velocity but has been inconsistent with his results. His ERA did take a hit when Jurrjens pitched sick on June 1 and gave up six earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

“He’s made some progress,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “His velocity has been up there. There’s some separation there with his change-up, so we’re going to give him a shot. He’s been an All-Star; he has the experience. Give him an opportunity again. I’m curious when he comes back to see how he pitches.”

Gonzalez said Jurrjens, who last pitched on Thursday, will likely throw a couple of innings one day early this week in Gwinnett to stay sharp, then join the Braves on Thursday’s off day in Boston.

The Braves could have inserted Kris Medlen back into the rotation. He spent two weeks in Gwinnett stretching out before the Braves decided to put him back in the bullpen given Mike Minor and Randall Delgado’s recent improvement. But even with Brandon Beachy on the DL and likely to miss a minimum of two to three starts, they still think Medlen is needed more in the bullpen.

“We thought about Medlen,” Gonzalez said. “Medlen may go back in the rotation at some point this summer, but right now we’re better off having him in the bullpen.”

Julio Teheran was another option, having just made a spot start last weekend against Toronto and pitching on the same as schedule as Beachy. But Gonzalez said Teheran felt some back stiffness during his start Saturday night in Gwinnett, when he came out after four innings and 86 pitches.

“He came out of the start yesterday with a little bit of stiffness of his back and also give JJ an opportunity to pitch up here,” Gonzalez said. “He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do down in the minor leagues.”

With off days coming on Thursday and Monday, June 25, the Braves could have gone to a four-man rotation a couple of times through the order but given Tim Hudson’s sore ankle, they preferred to give each starter the extra time by staying on course.

Let me get this right. You send Medlin down to stretch out to be a starter, you bring him back and won’t let him start. Instead you bring a guy up that can’t get my mother out at AAA and has obviously lost it and looks like he is not even close to getting it back. Is the Marx Brothers running this team now?

Brian McCann just starts getting hot and Gonzalez gives him a day off when we haven’t scored a run in about 1000 innings. Watching Showalter manage sure shows you what we’ve got managing for us. If the Braves get to the playoffs it will be in spite of Fredi.

Fork meet done. It is going to be a long season the way this team looks terrible for a week and then good for a few games and then terrible again. Only thing consistent about this team is that their inconsistent. The offense needs help badly and pitchers are dropping like flies.

It all goes back to what everyone thought. The Braves did not get a big bat in the off season and it shows. Offense is terrible. You won’t beat many people over a 162 game schedule with .250 hitters with no consistent power. Need to get Freeman back or it will be a long year.

Wren should be embarrassed to watch the team he has put together. And he should have to start answering for his terrible management decisions, especially his inept manager. That was the worst offensive lineup, and probably the worst defensive lineup that you will see any major league team put on the field. Then the mental midget had the audacity to pinch hit Wilson. Hell, i would let the pitcher bat for himself. But then again this all goes back to Wren and the talented bench he has put together. LOL!! This is the worst bench in baseball, and Hinske, Wilson, Diaz, and Ross couldn’t start for Gwinnett, yet Wren gets a free pass as always. When you get shoutout 6 or the last 13 games, somebody should have to answer for this pitiful offensive display. Larry Jones should either retire, or tell the damn manager he can’t help the club any longer, and ask to stop being put in the lineup. But that will never happen with this arrogant, selfish player. This guy has never been, and he will never be a leader. But the biggest joke of all of Wren’s decisions is this god awful clown the braves call the manager. This guy puts the worst lineup i have ever seen on the field to support his rookie pitcher. These young pitchers the braves have need some offensive and defensive support to help them, but this idiot can’t seem to understand that. Diaz, couldn’t play for most good softball teams in the atlanta area, and throw in Larry Jones, who can’t move to his left or his right, and now he can’t even get out of the way of a ball hit right to him. Then you have Uggla, and Prado, who isn’t a Ist baseman, and you have only one decent defensive player in the starting lineup in the infield(Simmons). That really tells you all you need to know about Fred Flintstone. If you aren’t going to put a decent offensive team on the field to help your rookie pitcher, at least put a good defensive team behind him.I forgot, we are talking about the braves, a team that has no talented defensive players in the infield. It is starting to get comical watching this team play. Wren should be proud to watch the team he put together, and the idiot he hired to manage them.

By the way, this team is still four games over .500, only 4 games out (with 96 games left to make it up…INSURMOUNTABLE) IN SPITE OF injuries to two major offensive cogs (Chipper and Freeman) and inconsistent (but improving) starting pitching from their No. 3 and 4 starters. Oh, and the bullpen has been shaky…but they have still found ways to win the majority of their games. Beachy might be out for an extended period, but for one of the YOUNGEST teams in Major League Baseball and for a team that plays the second most competitive division in baseball, they’re pretty damn good.

Braves spit out another one . HO HUM…it’s what happens when the GM assembles a group of chokers, and then keeps them together for a second year. Can’t pitch, can’t hit. Can’t stay healthy. Couldn’t ask for a bigger collection of losers. Wren is the same baseball idiot that he was in Baltimore. Called up JJ and Redmond. One hell of an answer to the pitching problem. Maybe we could call some one up that could actually hit as baseball..
Your 2012 Atlanta Braves…what a collection of losers, with like leadership in the front office, and in the dugout.

Whiskey River…the same team also rode a six game winning streak into the last game of the Toronto series, including a sweep of the vaunted Marlins who made the big roster splashes everyone begs for every offseason and trade deadline.

Trust and respect the fact that two guys that actually played pro ball (Wren and Fredi) and have made pretty good careers in baseball know a little bot more about personnel decisions than either you or I.

By the way, when’s the last time you made your way out to Turner Field for a game to possibly support the team? I drove five hours down I-85 to see MY BRAVES play the Orioles Saturday. And guess what? Even after a one-hitter thrown against them, my four friends and I (two of which I afforded the opportunity to attend their FIRST game) were part of a chorus of 1500+ chopping and cheering in the concourse as we left the stadium after the B.o.B. concert. That was refreshing to me. It was nice to see that the pessimists and haters don’t occupy the majority of the fanbase…maybe because they are at the games they don’t have the time to btch on the Internet when something doesn’t click exactly right.

I’m with my team win or lose. I’ve been going to Braves games for 14 of my 19 years on earth, including two this year (and it’s always going to be about 5 hrs from my NC home), I love the Braves. That’s something you could learn to do. (I used this “Joe” alias to troll…I almost never comment here…but the acidity, audacity, and absolute ignorance of some “fans” on this blog absolutely make me sick sometimes).

The Braves have struggled a lot, but nothing has been easy for ANY team in any of these eastern divisions. The only reason why people continuously complain about the braves is because they are not watching the games of other teams. Braves are still one of the best teams in the majors!

Also, I’m glad to see jurrjens get the call up. His ERA really got inflated due to some earlier starts, but he has improved quite a bit…he just needs to avoid some hiccups(grand slam his last game). Medlen did not light anything up in AAA in his starts either. If we want to talk solely about ERA, he posted a 4.72 ERA in AAA. Im so surprised how people are so quick to blast jurrjens. When healthy, he’s clearly been one of the best. Lets see what he can do!

To all the Frank Wren fans & apologists on here:

Since taking over in 2008, what exactly has he done to warrant his job?

Other than literally backing into the post-season in Bobby’s final season (2010), its been rather lame around Braves’ country.

Last year I saw more than a third of the team payroll tied up in the likes of Derek Lowe, Kinchen Kawakami & Nate McLouth; neither KK or McLouth are currently on major league rosters .. They traded a .300 hitter in Infante & we get Dan Uggla, an occasional HR and another longterm contract.

If this were Boston or Philly or NY, where fans are demanding, Wren would have been fired a long time ago.

The Braves of 14 Consecutive divisional championship days are way back in the day.
