As much as I hate to say this but its time to trade Bourne and see if we can get some help with pitching. As well as he is hitting we will never sign him so lets try and get something for him while we can. A #3 pitcher and a starting outfielder and a middle reliever. Any contenders have that to give up?
GO BRAVES…..from TAMPA BAY. Wish TBS still carried them. Where is Ted when you need him? Speaking of Ted….I got into a elevator with him when he visted the company I worked for and I had a short, but interesting conversation with him….many years ago when TBS was big and the Braves we not. He was strange even then….but brilliant. He told me…..”We are going places with this new venture (CNN)…..he was right. Then…..years later….he married Jane Fonda and got into Buffalo. He remains strange.
If you are truly thinking…..then you can’t go wrong in the end…..my grandpa taught me that when I was very young. Made sense then….and still does. Think….then act…..but never act and then think. Very wise instruction from him.
To answers some of the obvious questions/comments posted above for those who don’t see the big picture.
Why Redmond and not Teheran? Because it’s a short stint middle relief slot callup for one. The Braves won’t need a starter until Beachy’s next scheduled start. For another, Teheran was optioned back to Gwinnett on the 11th and he cannot be called up for 10 days by rule.
Why Jurrgens and not Teheran? The 10 days will be up and it will be for a start, but the Braves MUST find out what Jurrgens can do. Put simply, they own his rights thru next year and despite his struggles he will get a decent arbitration figure. They need to find out if they want to tender him or not .. and even if they have no plans to tender him they have to hope he can make a comeback so they can get something in trade. This is a ‘big picture’ callup.
Let’s also not forget Jurrgens should have been the All-Star game starter last year. He was that DOMINANT. Why is everyone so quick to give up on him?
Lastly, is Tood Redmond the best an organization with so much depth can muster? Maybe not, but he is available and fits the middle/long relief role nicely. Plus he is in his fifth year with the Braves system. I am not sure of the qualifications for the Rule 5 draft, but he might be another guy they try to move or risk losign him for nothing .. and there ARE some organizations where he would likely make the starting rotation. If he pitches well we might keep him up and send Varvaro back down .. as he obviously still has control issues.
To anyone thinking McDowell’s at fault: What exactly has he done to cause these injuries? The National’s pitching coach is highly regarded right now. Is he responsible for Strasburg’s and Jordan Zimmerman’s injuries? Will he be responsible when one of those two go down again and when Gio Gonzalez goes down? How about the Giants’ pitching coach? Is he responsible when Lincecum and Cain go down? Was Mazzone responsible for Smotlz’s injuries? Wholers? Avery? It all comes back to mechanics that were developed long before they got to this level. Beachy, Smoltz, Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, Arodys Vizcaino, Medlen, etc all have bad mechanics developed years ago. Yes, they could work to change them before they get injured (and should), but then you’re practically committing to a long struggling process anyway. Better to blame scouts who don’t recognize the bad mechanics before drafting these guys.
What about keep bourn and re-sign mccann with the same or less amount of monney dlowe and chipper are receiving this season??….any update about beachy I’m very concern about him!!..does freddy freman still want to play in major league??? let’s give Redmond the benefit of the doubt, at this juncture a Question mark is Better than what we already know… No Matter Who is on the Mound, If The Braves can’t HIT , they’ll never win… The sticks are the Key, here…
@bigdawg: What part don’t you understand? What part doesn’t make sense? Glad to see you brought a well thought out rebuttal to my post though. I truly have met my match now I guess…
Yet another instance of Bourn on first and Prado at bat and no movement. MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN!! Play hit and run!!! Prado can handle the bat, don’t wait for something to happen.
i agree jim. When the bats are hot, i get not forcing the issue. But when we haven’t scored in 16-17 innings it’s beyond time to push the issue and RUN!
How many times have you been watching the game with Bourn on 1st, Prado at the plate…. and nothing. Not even an attempt to steal 2nd.
C’mon Fredi! quit sitting on your hands and force the run game.
The Braves have enough talent to win. The problem is a third base coach disguised as a terrible manager and an inept coaching staff. How long did Leo go as pitching coach with no arm problems? He’s probably available, but on the outs with the current management which, BTW, is about the worst in baseball. Couple that with inept and disinterested ownership and the reason for this disaster in-the-making is obvious.
__________________________
True, except for the “in the making” part. This disaster was made long ago–and simply continues from season to season in one form or another.
Wake up you old farts who spew nothing but criticism and hate. It’s just a game. and those who participate are trying their best to improve and do their best.

Moot point, the Braves are done. They can’t play at a high enough level for a consistent amount of time to be considered for a playoff run. Hopefully with the Derek Lowe and Chipper Jones money coming off the books next season the Braves can actually lure a few “real” players to come to Atlanta. Put Prado at 3rd base permanently, and go out and sign or trade for a legit power hitting LF.
I am a realist however, and know the Braves are to f’n cheap to do something like that. Then they wonder why attendance is down? People are sick of seeing a stale product, and that is exactly what the Braves are.

Sounds eerily like the Hawks, Falcons, Thrashers, Flames, etc.
not trying to be negative, but i don’t understand having a premier lead-off hitter who is a premier base stealer. Who is hitting .314 w/ an OBP .364 and several long hitting streaks (i believe career long, but not sure)…
And…. he’s got 17 stolen bases in 66 games.
If we’re not going to use him then maybe we don’t deserve him? (signing as a free agent) i hope we do sign him, but if we as fans are frustrated with him not running. You can bet the house he’s frustrated too.
If you want cheerleaders, read Chop Talk (is it still being published?)
All fans grouse. Have you read the Yankee’s blog and they’ve won 27 times.
Only one team’s fan base is happy after the WS. It’s sports. It’s not life.
If you don’t like the comments – pro or con the Braves – have a nice day.

Just hoping. Only hoping that Fredi G will be fired. Please make it happen Mr. wren. This team needs a lightning rod where the sun doesn’t shine. Looks like the Nats and Mets might get swept.
Our team is great sometimes, awful sometimes, too young in some parts and too old in others. We are still trying to develop a lot of guys. The young pitchers are coming along. I think Delgado and Minor grew up the last few weeks. Good thing, with Beachy gone. A lot of unknowns, and an offense that is great sometimes, but terrible at scoring when we are under the gun, and especially against pitchers nobody has heard of. Hammels one hitting us? Chen? Wow.
My assessment is a lot to look forward to but not likely much this year. We should have a winning season. Thought we’d make the playoffs but I’m not so confident at the moment. Our bench is pretty weak, nobody really coming through. Bullpen vulnerable. Still one missing a hitter with pop.
So, who can say? It’ll be an interesting second half. If Jason, Freddie and Mac can hit big the second half we might have a chance. I don’t see us taking division. Talent is there but the willpower isn’t.
Time to start wearing the paper bags over the head in Atlanta. Gutless and heartless effort. This kind of baseball would not be tolerated by the Yankeesor other winning franchises. And at home none the less
There are 2 things worse than a team not hitting or producing runs.
One, is a manager who sits back and doesn’t create situations to help his team out of a slump.
Two, is a GM who doesn’t make moves to help his team out in trouble times.
We definitely have the first one… the second is still up in the air.
Fredi: Good decisions. Does not use the supposedly hot hitting McCann. Uses Jack Wilson in a 2 run deficit game and Jack, on the fist pitch decides to try to bunt. Jack, we are down by 2, can’t afford to give up an out. You don’t have enough speed to beat one out.
O’F arm probably will be sore again. Why not DL him until he is checked by a real doctor? Why not DL Beachy before this happened? Why not DL FF? He doesn’t want to play, just as Heyward didn’t want to, lst year when injured.
We need a complete roster. Heck, bring up Mejia at 1B. Bring up Constanza. They at least want to play.
Wasted Francisco for Jack Wilson. Does that tell you how bad Francisco is?
Fire Fredi and Wren. Baltimore took years to recover after Wren. Will he do the same thing to the Braves?
Heartless, Gutless, Clueless Impotent LOSERS….
Why didn’t you just take the whole w/e off?
I hope the skankees and Red Sox kick you in your fat faces and sweep the season away for you.
Welcome to LOSERVILLE
Hokie. Do you think the Yankees will use there first team, or just let the starters get one at bat to get a run and then let the ushers and tne vendors play? Regarding the Bosox there are about as mucked up in the headbone as the Braves. Should be a pretty goofy series.
This is a FIRST for me as a baseball fan for over 60 years. I have NEVER advocated for a manager to be fired during a season, and only a few times have I wanted a manager fired after a season, HOWEVER, Fredi needs to go. He had a VERY mediocre playing career in the low minors. With some very intelligent guys with excellent “baseball minds” and leadership abilities, a mediocre playing career is not a handicap. Sadly, Fredi is just not that intelligent and seemingly lacks leadership abilities. No doubt, he was and could again be a hard-wroking and successful COACH, but not a manager. True, the Braves would still have the same players with a new manager, but a change can be beneficial. In the military, I saw cases where a CO was transferred and a new CO came in–and with the same troops, there was a different atmosphere, different expectations, and higher morale, leading to improved performance. I wish Fredi the best, know he would get another baseball job, but he needs to be given a handshake and sent on his way VERY soon.
… and a hearty congratulations to MELANIE OUDIN at Wimbledon!
it appears she’s solidly growing into a tennis champion by beating
top ranked players all in a row all of whom undoubtedly came ready
to take on the best…..
This a joke, right? Teheran can’t come up because of back troubles and now we have to rely on Jurrjens? Really? None of the vets are coming through – Jones is forever day-to-day, McCann can’t string 1 good series together, Uggla goes through bouts. The most disappointing is that it doesn’t seem like ATL really gets the most of their top prospects. Yes, there are baby prospects that make it big (Beachy, Medlen, Kimbrel, Delgado), but some of the vaunted prospects (Heyward, Teheran) keep not fulfilling their great expectations. All the while, Melky Cabrera looks like the kind of guy we desperately need in SF.
Glad I didn’t pay to see that today. The team is a mess right now. Now they head to Yankee stadium for what will probably be another beat down by the Yanks. They are playing at about the same level as a single A team.
The other day when I was making an issue of the Braves leaving so many on base, there was those on here saying it was no big deal. One poster even said it wasn’t important, that what counted was the runs that scored. Well, DUH! One said the highest scoring teams usually had the most LOBs. I was trying to find the total LOBs for the Braves this year on either MLB, Baseball Research, or the Braves site but could find no column for it. I was thinking the Braves maybe were on course to set a record. After today, with 13 LEFT ON BASE, and none scored, I wouldn’t be at all surprised but what they lead the league. I wonder if those that said it was not important the other day still think so after today. 13, that’s THIRTEEN left on base today! That is pathetic! The O’s only had 5 LOBs and scored 2 runs. If you are leaving a dozen men on base and not scoring don’t tell me that is not an important stat! Well, DUH, DUH, and DUH again! Some of you I worry about! (Probably the same ones who think FG is doing a great job!)
@D.A.Nuggla You are absolutely correct. One thing that I noticed lately is as soon as the get someone on base they start swinging for the fences. The opposing pitcher starts throwing them junk like the change or curve, The swing from the heels and that is why KO’s and men left on base. What do you think? BTW Happy Fathers day if you are one. I used to be but lost her. I sure miss her bad.
“WR”, Thanks, and you are correct also. We agree, and seem to be the only ones on here with any logic and common sense. I am very sorry for your loss, that must be terrible. Yes, I am a Father, and don’t know how I would deal with what you are going through. Hopefully you had some good times together and can focus on that. Keep ya chin up!
Wonder if the Braves pitching in the series will be blamed for the fact they only scored a TOTAL of 4 runs against the O’s? That’s 4, FOUR, runs in 27 innings, with 33, that’s THIRTY-THREE left on base. One would think you just accidentally score 4 runs without even trying! This manager does not have a clue as to how to manufacture runs, like with bunts, stolen bases, hit and run, etc. Makes you wonder how he ever got this far? Must have friends in “high places”!
I think the O’s only had 2 men LOB today. One in the ninth and maybe one other They had nobody left on base in first 6 innings. Braves had the followings ABs: 1 – 4, 1- 4, 0-3, 0 -4, 1-4, 1-3, 1-3, 2-3, 0- 3 — all 7 singles + 1 walk, with 3 DPs that equates to 5 LOB. Not hitting with men on base has been a problem of late, but over the last two games the problems has been not hitting to even get on base.
33 left on base in this series? There were 5 today + 4 yesterday that leaves 24 men LOB in the first game. They squandered some opportunities in that game, but did not have 24 men LOB — not even close. The Braves are not hitting period — in the clutch or even to set up an inning. We can complain about the lack of hitting but get the facts straight and don’t make wild claims about how many men have been LOB.
Just like I thought, another long losing stretch. This team is now headed down to 4th or 5th place to stay. Beachy is probably done and headed for surgery. So now the Braves, who already had pitching concerns, are down to one (at best two) reliable starter(s). It is over folks. They are done already.
Nerdville,
Hanson has been solid if he stays healthy, and Delgado has been pretty reliable, but doesn’t get any runs to work with — today was at least the third time the team has been shut out when he pitches. By this time next year, if not sooner (and if he stays healthy), Delgado will be our ace.
Why doesn’t Fredi move Andrelton up in the order? he’s been one of our hottest hitters lately. Why is Jack Wilson even on the team? Easy call on Francisco too. A useless OBP producer and waste of a roster spot. Wren wasted $1m guaranteed on Livan buffet Hernandez too. desperately need new management
“Jim” careful about admonishing someone without checking the facts. I always do before I post something and open my mouth and look like a fool. Do you think I just pulled the number “33″ out of the air without checking first. If you will kindly go to MLB and check the boxscores, AS I DID, you will see it says the Braves left 15 on base on the 15th(1st game), 5 on base on the 16th(2nd game) and 13 on base today. I can even add that in my head, IT’s 33, even if you add it backwards or forward. Look over the cliff before you leap next time! An apology is forthcoming I am sure. Oh, the column you look under in the boxscore is LOB!
Unless Fredi is canned before or at the All Star break, the Braves are destined for 4th place in their division. Wren needs to go also. Moves like picking up ragarms from the dustbin [Livan this year, Proctor last year, etc., etc., etc.] have not worked AND WILL NEVER WORK! Yet Wren continues to make said moves, year after year, after year.
As far as I know an MRI cost between $500-$800, and a MLB good arm like Beachy’s cost millions, they should perform that test last week when he felt the disconfort, don’t you think so?
Braves should become sellers ASAP. This team is toxic. Build the team around Heyward, Freeman, Kimbel Simmons, Minor, Beachy,Delgado, Teheran. Would like to keep Bourne but it ain’t going to happen It’s too late Can you imagine Wren negotiating with Boris). Too bad 90’s Braves showed us strong defense up the middle wins consistently. Give me an A. Jones, a Furcal, 2 decent (not great) starters a better than average closer and we will win 90 games. Braves have got a lot of the parts but Wren does not even know it. Move bourne and dare I say McCann asap. Don’t wait till the deadline(value diminishes too much) YES, I did say McCann. The guy is slow and getting slower is decining defensively(not as if he was a bit better than average. Watch his footwork. It is as bad as it gets. Watch how long it takes him to get out of the croutch(forever). 6 time all-star signed through 2013 at a modest salary would bring a huge huge huge huge return now. Other teams will want him for 1 or 2 years and will pay a high price. 2012 is gone. 2013 is probably gone. Lowes $10M comes off payroll along with C.Jones $15M. The scouting staff and the baseball guys have gone to the Nationals(ande now on to LA), Tampa Bay etc.etc. Wren probably is not up to the task. Cox is still the best judge of talent in the organization. We should only hope he would give us 2 more years of guiding player personell.
Yes “Chop Talk” is great for those who want cheerleading, as well as the Braves post game show, which looks like something a high school journalism class would produce. Today, the one tweet they read over the air was “Great job by Delgado!”
Surprise – Surprise – Surprise
It goes ON and ON and ON and ON
FOUR of our FIVE Starting Pitchers from last year were COMMING OF INJURIES.
AND now BEACHY.
And this is just the TIP OF THE ICEBERG.
Of all the LARGE NUMBER of different STARTING PITCHERS that the Braves have had in the SIX or SEVEN YEARS since LEO LEFT as Pitching Coach, almost EVERY ONE has ended up being injured.
The Braves chances of being a CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM has been and is being DESTROYED for YEARS TO COME.
Most of these recently were YOUNG, GREAT, ESTABLISHED PITCHERS – AND NOW ——–
Mr. O’BRIEN — FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, how can you and the other writers not ADDRESS THIS.
This is probably the MOST SIGNIFICANT THING in the HISTORY of the Braves Team or for and OTHER MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM.

“Jurrjens problems seem mental. In Gwinnett w/bases empty – 1:09 ERA/36 IP; runners on – 11.19 ERA/23 1/3 IP; runners in scoring position – 21.60 ERA/11 2/3 IP.”
You are kidding right? ofcourse he has a higher era with runners on. the only way he can give up a run with bases empty is a solo homerun

People are sick of seeing a stale product, and that is exactly what the Braves are.

not trying to be negative, but i don’t understand having a premier lead-off hitter who is a premier base stealer.

DA Nuggla,
I think the O’s only had 2 men LOB today.

Hanson has been solid if he stays healthy, and Delgado has been pretty reliable, but doesn’t get any runs to work with — today was at least the third time the team has been shut out when he pitches. By this time next year, if not sooner (and if he stays healthy), Delgado will be our ace.

This is probably the MOST SIGNIFICANT THING in the HISTORY of the Braves Team or for and OTHER MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM.
