O’Flaherty unavailable with sore left elbow

Braves reliever Eric O’Flaherty is nursing a sore left (pitching) elbow and that’s why he didn’t pitch in the eighth inning Tuesday night against the Yankees when he might have normally.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez revealed after the 6-4 loss that O’Flaherty woke up Monday with a sore elbow and that he has been trying to back off of him for the last couple of days.

“It may be three, four more days we’ll try to stay away from him,” Gonzalez said.

Jonny Venters came in to pitch with one out and one on in the eighth in relief of Mike Minor. Venters failed to record an out and allowed the Yankees to tie it 4-4 on one Alex Rodriguez swing for a grand slam. Gonzalez then called on Cory Gearrin, who was just called up from Triple-A Gwinnett, and he gave up a two-run homer to Nick Swisher.

Let’s hope that Huddy can go 8 solid innings. Kimbrel not allowed in game until 9th.

The question now must be fairly asked: did Fredi’s overuse of the bullpen trio last season ruin Venter’s career? Venter’s is a pitiful shell of his former outstanding self and time is wearing away on how long the Braves can keep him in the setup role for Kimbrel.

ok this is rediculous! all the pitchers with sore shoulders and lack of conditioning!!! beachy with soreness, hanson last year. now hes lost 3 mph in a year! ever since mazzone left our pitchers cant last a full year without going on DL. i miss the days when we had inning eaters and guys toughed out injuries or lied about it to stay in. they carved out the strike zone and made hitters look silly. pitchers now are mamby pambies that pitch 100 pitches in a game. guys use to go complete games win or lose. 25 years ago, pitchers went 250 innings, went dee into games. were tough and didnt let the little things bother them. now everyone is having tommy john surgery, and a good outing is 6 ininings? how is this possilbe when for more than 80 years pitchers pitched more and more, and now they pitch less and less. you can blame any issue, but managers and owners got soft on these guys and cater to there every little whim! i want to see guys pitch through adversity, and buckle down and learn their craft better. please for the love of god can the braves toughen up their pitchers!!!!

It’s a shame Kimbrel wasn’t available. Oh I forgot, he’s a “3 out specialist”!

Braves stink and Fredi’s missuse of the young relievers is one of the reasons why.

Chances are good that last year ruined Eric and Venters for this year. Kimbrell may be pitching on borrowed time, also. Put that on Fredi but McDowell is the elephant in the room. I can’t help but think that Roger is out at the end of this year (assuming he makes it through the year). Every pitcher has been hurt either last year or this year. Only Beachy (who is needing extra time off now) and Kimbrell are pitching better than last year. The Yankees are the better team than our guys this year but we’ve got to learn to beat the big boys to advance. It bears repeating…we need to learn how to win. I enjoy listening to the other team’s broadcasters but I’m very tired of every announcer going on ad nausaum about the collapse of last year. Is there a purpose in Dale Murphy being on the broadcast? The times I listened all he says is “that’s right Joe” or “I agree”. I had to laugh when he said “I would have liked to seen that ball a little more inside”, well I bet the pitcher would have too. Murph is a failed experiment. Gotta love Simmons…what a fabulous addition. Chipper better quit snoozing on third or Simmons will make him look bad all year long.

Who did Fredi learn from? Bobby C. Anyone else remember how Bobby ruined the arms of guys like Reitsma and Remlinger by over-using them? Braves always seem to have at least one reliever who is #1 or #2 in the league in appearances/innings pitched….and they’re never the same after that.

Have to disagree about Murphy in the broadcast booth. He is much more honest than the other two, who rarely point out any negatives.

Hey, that Soriano guy looked pretty good in the 9th. Who’d he used to play for? Wish Matt Diaz hit better last night. Why not put Heyward in. He kills lefty pitching. Fredi sure gets me fired up. He seems so passionate and really gets onto the umps. We’re sure lucky the Marlins canned him so he can manage the Braves.

And why pitch Gearrin in the 8th when he went 2 innings on Monday? Why not Martinez or Durbin or even with the bases loaded, Kimbrell?

Oh well, at leat Fredi did not put Livan Hernandez in the game…

So Right!!!

Overuse of the pitchers….both starters (high pitch count) and relievers (frequent appearances) will be the demise of the ‘young guns’.

I have never seen so many tired and hurt arms in an organization. This has to be laid on the shoulders of the pitching staff.

FG and the braves need a different pitching coach before every arm is broken.

As I sit her checking out which manager in the majors will be the first to get the ZIGGY…You have to put Fredi on that list.My question to all the readers is who would replace Gonzalez ? The obvious choice would be Terry Francona however every team thinking of making that change brings up his name.Since Bobby Cox personally hand picked Fredi I think even though he may know he needs to go The Question is Will He ???Anyone agree or disagree ? Jim Fregosi???????

Charlie Manueal is right. The game was on the line in the 7th, use Kimbrell. To hell with this only pitches the ninth so he can get a save for his numbers and agent and contract. Like the fat guy we had out there a few years ago who wouldn’t pitch anywhere but the ninth.

Qestions I have: why wasn’t another pitcher already up & throwing when they brought Venters in and why didn’t bring Martinez instead of Venters? I love Dale Murphy, but he is boring in the booth for more than a half inning stop by.

Ok, lets review….O’flaherty is unavailable, Venters is not reliable, Livan is hopeless, Gearin is young and learning, Durbin and Kimbrel are the only reliable pitchers in the bullpen. Now the bench..Diaz (only for left handed pitchers), Hinske (struggling), Wilson (no hope and no need), Francisco (automatic strikeout), Ross (great player). There is absolutely no depth to this team. When one of the starters is hurting or on DL we struggle. Until this changes the team is in trouble. I see no trades or changes in the future. No money to do anything. I’m still going to support the Braves, but my expectations are going down.

No Damage control. Since giving up 4-0 last sunday, leaving Lardy Livan in there, I blogged after the game hopping this wouldn’t turn into mommentum changer, oh I was hoping not to be right w/this, now 0-4, because the team is playin’ tryin’ not to lose mentality. Get rid of the losers. Flailer-cisco’s swing makes me sick, get him off the team! He don’t care, no approach. He just flails at anything hoping to touch the ball someway. Swings Big alright, but nowhere near the ball. Pulling the head out staring at the fans behind the on-deck circle wonderin’ if he touched the ball.
