“Let’s see…after some review, it seems appearant that we would have won several WS if our guys had just layed off the cerial and cheeseburgers. Is that right?”
No. They didnt have to make any such sacrifice. If they had gotten rid of Bobby Cox after the 1993 season, they couldve had all the cereal and cheeseburgers they wanted and still won at least three WS championships
Robert – I think you’re full of “it”… and I understand that idea. I also was not talking about their pitching ability, but their makeup and fortitude. You’re still a moron.
“He wanted to win -championships!- and gave every game his all”
Well said. With Glavine and Maddux, when they lost a WS, you got the feeling that they were like oh well it was a great season. Only with Smoltz did you get the feeling that he was sickened by failing to get it done when the opportunity to be a champion presented itself
“He was party goofy kid and part warrior but he always wanted the ball,” Foxworthy said. “He stared at the batter like he’d peed in his mother’s purse.”
That’s pretty funny cricket. I think most people understand the warrior comment and let’s not be oversensitive here. Don’t agree at all with the statement, but understand the context of it.
raleighbravesfan – Maddux and Glavine’s makeup was that they were happy to be there and winning it all was a bonus after a great season well done. Smoltz’s makeup was that the regular season was all about getting to the chance to win what really matters.
For what it’s worth, I find it hard to believe that anyone could fail to see this basic difference in the makeups of these guys. You can choose to deny or ignore it (which is what I think you’re doing)
Heck – I bet you they’d admit it themselves. I’d be willing to bet that Smoltz still loses an occasional night’s sleep agonizing over the opportunities not taken advantage of. I’d similarly bet that if you asked that of Maddxu or Glavine they’d laugh and tell you they are long over it
smoltz clearly wants his number retired MORE than glavin -
smoltz’s reaction to news – He called it a “wow moment.”
glavin’s reaction to news that his number will be retired – The unflappable Tom Glavine said he’s not sure how he will react when he sees the Atlanta Braves retire his No. 47.
“Wasn’t it Glavin who pitched the complete game shut out in the WS we did win?”
Right there is proof you dont understand “it” – The champion mentality isnt satisfied with getting the big job done ONCE – The champion, the warrior, expects and accepts nothing less EVERY TIME
Tell me this – one game to decide if you win or lose it all – would you rather have Smoltz or Glavine on the mound for your side?
I think most people understand the warrior comment and let’s not be oversensitive here
Well, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to be thought oversensitive. The casual use of a term which has a certain meaning to certain people gets me off the launch pad, and I highly doubt that’s going to change. Robert has so little understanding of competitive will that it’s unsurprising that he would misuse the term, though.
Glavine, who had five seasons with at least 20 wins, set an example for other Atlanta pitchers by refusing to be slowed by minor injuries.
“I appreciate him more than anybody,” Smoltz said. “I was with him longer than anybody. And the things that he went through behind the scenes are so far greater, they could only be appreciated by the guys who were with him.”

Smoltz consistantly stepped it up in the post-season
Yes, Glavine did it that one time — after a short regular season, (advantage to the starting pitchers), against a team managed by Mike Hargrove
I’m done with this. If y’all dont want to see or acknowledge the difference, then that’s fine. There’s a reason for it. Acknowledging that difference is acknowledgement of the franchise’s repeated shortcomings and of their repeated failure when presented with opportunity.
Acknowledging the difference is acknowledging that winning a division title is not an accomplishment when you have a team good enough to win the World Series
Verducci has an article about Votto at SI.com.. couple of eye opening stats..
“Votto has pulled a ball foul into the stands only once in his entire major league career. Once.”
“Votto has not popped up to the infield all season. In fact, he has popped out to the infield only three times in 2,138 plate appearances over the past four seasons.”
See, I told you guys that JH COULD catch up to a fastball, when you pitch it to his happy zone. About belt high outer half! 2 in a row virtually same place.
On the triple crown … I saw Secretariat when he was doing his thing. I have never seen a horse that was even close to as dominant as that horse. The triple crown for him was almost an afterthought.
I liked what they said last nite about how Stanton invests his whole batting practice hitting to the right side. It showed last nite when he hit his HR down the RF line. Jerking 60 MPH batting practice pitches into the stands is like heading to the driving range and just abusing your driver when you need to be working on your irons.
