At the end of the evening the Braves will have the 4th best record in MLB, 1 game behind #2 and 1/2 game behind #3 (which will either be Texas or SF)…

Somebody wake up Billy Wagner. The #Astros 6-pitchers-in-a-no-hitter record is in definite jeopardy in Seattle. M’s at 5 – & counting!

I didn’t report him. It takes way too much time, that it’s really not worth it. If they had a regular flag button, like many other sites, such as HuffPo, then I would.

jj, I think they are talking about chipper’s bat.

Weirdest no-hitter ever? Andy Hawkins.

And I was there in Aisle 5 behind the plate the last time Dodgers were no-hit…..Kent Mercker.

I just returned home from tonight’s great game. I was very impressed with Fredi’s managing tonight, especially using Diaz to PH and Ross to get a righty into the game, after which Freeman PH. Gonzalez clearly outmanaged Toronto’s manager because we had the match-ups in our favor (even if the players didn’t always execute). Also, I was surprised that Toronto didn’t intentionally walk Uggla and Heyward to bring up the pitcher’s spot with 2 out in the 9th and a runner on third. I’d certainly rather pitch to Jack Wilson than Uggla or Heyward in that situation.

The Marlins team just looks pathetic. Apart from Stanton and Hanley they don’t have much. Tampa dominated them tonight and they looked lifeless aganist us. How were they even tied for first place 4 games ago. I don;t think Marlins will hang around come September.

Hard to classify 3 hits and giving up 1 run as a disappointing start but think it was. Beachy has to learn to push through and stay longer in games. 5 innings doesn’t cut it. Like him, think he has having a strong season but wouldn’t classify a perennial #2 starter yet. Need more to advance in playoffs.

Anyone feel like the magic is coming back to Heyward? I do! What magic you ask? The magic he brought those first 2 1/2 months he came up. He was instrumental in alot of exciting wins. Here’s hoping he stays healthy. Hard not to like the guy, when you listen to him talk. Not sayin I didn’t like him, but for all the haters out there. I liked it when he didn’t dis Prado for the dirt down his back, he called it “Victory Dirt.” That made me smile!

Braves don’t win if Uggla doesn’t walk so many times yesterday.

Lew

June 9th, 2012
9:09 am

But if Uggla had hit a single or double when he walked with the bases loaded, they win in nine innings.

Walks are all fine and well – better of course than an out, but you want your heavy hitters hitting and driving in the top of the oirder who have great OBPs.

If walks were what everyone expected from Heyward, why has he been universally disappointing until he started to hit for power?

Danga

June 9th, 2012
9:16 am

If walks were what everyone expected from Heyward, why has he been universally disappointing until he started to hit for power?

Because he didn’t walk enough. :D You are absolutely right here. Of course I like it when Heyward is patient, chooses his pitches carefully, and takes his walks when they are there. I like it a lot more when he bashes a couple of home runs in a game. But the walks are an essential part of his game and his value. We saw in the 10th how dangerous he can be when simply on base.

Uggla had the bases loaded walk and the walk in front of Heyward’s double to score another. They both extended the inning. One time Heyward came through and one time he didn’t. If the pitcher doesn’t give you your pitch, the ability to take a walk is very valuable. Or even if you miss two pitches you thought you should crush, the ability to take a walk gives the batter behind you a chance to impact the game with runners on base.

Efrim

June 9th, 2012
9:22 am

Lew, he’s been universally disappointing because he has a career OBP in the .350’s – that’s under what we expected for him on base wise, and power wise, he’s slugged like .430, also under what we expected.

If Heyward is going to become what we want, he needs to walk and hit for extra bases – both.

That was a fun game to be at :) Except for the fact that my niece, going to her first Braves game since 1998/99, drank a little too much at the Thanks Bobby tailgate and proceeded to puke just before the game started. There was this preppie couple sitting two rows down who objected and complained to the usher. The staff came and cleaned it up, but then a “guest relations” person came and asked us if she could “move us higher”. I said I really didn’t want to because I had paid for these seats and was not moving to another higher deck. She said oh, no, it will be on this level just to another section. So, we get moved to that row that is behind the main Terrace level seats, up in the concourse, one section over, which meant that we couldn’t see most of the Big Screen. And then the little witch who complained and her social party – left in the 6th. What do you think, she never had a little too much and puked it up? I bet she has.

Good win last night – a little frustrating at times given the chances the Braves squandered with men in scoring position (but a win is a win).

Its not a good lineup when you’re best hitter in the 6, 8, and 9 spots is the pitcher batting eighth. Hinske and Biff are black holes right now, and Francisco’s AB last night in the seventh inning was painful to watch.

Reading some of the comments of the past 18 hours or so, I am reminded of why I frequent DOB’s blog much less than I once did. I guess some do not realize that when they have to resort to name calling and insults, their argument is lost.

When McFann first made her appearance on this blog, I did not believe her to be who she said she was, a teenage girl and gave her a hard time. She is who she is and I appreciate the innocence she brings to the blog. It is good that we can have heroes and role models in our lives rather than be cynical of everyone who comes along.

For the dude who discribed himself as being someone strong off the bench in respect to the blog, Lew is one of the reasons DOB’s blog is a success. He and a few others, most of whom have moved on, kept it relevant and fun. I am afraid the folks who have come along post JJS don’t have a clue as to how much fun it was.

Now baseball…. Heck of a game last night even if it was way too long. Sometimes you have to wonder if they turn off the shot clock at first pitch in the AL.

Beachy was really all over the place last night, you have to wonder what was going on with that.

Jason Heyward looks to be getting some of his swagger back, really, just a confidence we have not seen from him for a while.

Lew, the guy has to be one miserable soul. A desperate cry for attention because he does not know how to interact with other human beings other than to try cause strife. It is symptomatic of a bulling complex and likely would not dare to try it on someone face to face.

I am all for free speech and all that but much of the language used has no place in a civil society. We used to call it, a lack of breeding, a shame he did not have parents to teach him about manners.

Now, back to baseball…. Prado could move back to second if necessary, the guy is pretty amazing.

I find it strange so many folks being down on Matt Diaz. No, he is not an automatic base hit but his defense is much improved and he wields a decent stick. I am not sure what is going on with Henski. I have to suspect he has some sort of nagging injury the team is not telling (nor should they) us about.

I think a lot of things will level out once Chipper is able to return to the field and Fab Five Freddie is healthy again.

For sure, the biggest difference in this team has to be the arrival of Simmons, just a complete turn around in the team’s demeanor…
