I don’t think Wren is the problem, the payroll is. (though it is workable, I mean look at the Rays)
_______________________________________________________________________________

Yeah but the Rays spend big $ on the draft while the Braves draft low ceiling, low $ college guys like Minor and Gilmartin. That explains why our minor league system ain’t looking so hot right now while the Rays have a seemingly endless flow of great prospects. It all goes back to ownership. and the willingness to invest in the future of the on-field product. Liberty Media just wants to break even year to year and flip the team at some point. At the insane rate sports franchises are appreciating in value I can’t really blame them. At some point they will make a huge profit on our Bravos. Until then though, we’re stuck with what we have.

If Minor has another bad outing tonight I’d be VERY hard pressed to see how or why the Braves keep him in the Majors, let alone their rotation.

This I agree with. But as for our bigleague payroll, while it could be better (and I would like it to be a little higher), it’s not all that bad. Our draft spending, however, is atrocious.

I rec’d a nice little book for Christmas, “The Wit and Wisdom of Baseball.” Enjoyable reading, quotes and anecdotes from the baseball world. I’ll share a few of them with you all from time to time.

*Joe Niekro hit his only major-league homer against brother Phil, beating him in a 1976 game. Together, the Niekros won more game -539- than any other pair of pitching brothers.

*Richard Ashburn, center fielder for the original NY Mets in 1962, had a communication gap with Spanish-speaking ss Elio Chacon. So Ashburn learned how to say “I got it” in Spanish. When a looping fly ball came his way later that day, Ashburn screamed “Lo tengo! Lo tengo!” Chacon stopped in his tracks but left fielder Frank Thomas, who spoke NO Spanish, knocked Ashburn aside just as he was reaching for the ball.

*Herbert Hoover – “Next to religion, baseball has furnished a greater impact on American life than any other institution.”

The problem is Wren overrated his pitching staff (with the excepion of Beechy). He hoarded his young pitching, and so far, they have either been too fragile (Hanson and Jurrgens) or just let us down.

_______________________________________

But that’s part of the issue… we would be better off cutting our annual big league payroll by $5mill and reinvesting money that into the draft. Or whatever that *magic* number is. Because the pipeline of cheap, great talent would start flowing in 3-4 years and that is essential to a medium payroll. But that’s a big picture view and Liberty doesn’t have that.

I’m in the DC area and I’m surprised they haven’t called the game yet. Given the severity of the storms that are in the area and headed this way, the Nats are being irresponsible in bringing fans out for this.

Jurrjens, who was optioned to the minors in late April, permitted just three hits in eight scoreless innings during a 1-0 win over Rochester. He finished with five strikeouts and did not walk a batter as his fastball topped off at 93 mph. “Like night and day,” Gwinnett manager Dave Brundage told MLB.com.

One game does not mean he is back. Last year did count- that’s why they stuck with him so long…but he has struggled for too long to make a quick judgement call. Let him prove that he is more consistent before you call him up again and maybe have the same problems. I am a big JJ fan- he’s one of my favorite Braves and I would like nothing more than to see him back to his old self. But I am not going to get too excited over a single great outing. If we were to get a new owner who could spend money, I don’t think Wren needs to be fired. He’s doing the best he can while under budget constraints. If he could spend just a little more (like 120mil), he might get to be more creative and do more. I don’t think Wren is the problem, the payroll is. (though it is workable, I mean look at the Rays)

@The Only Braves Fan— In five yrs a $120 million payroll will be needed just to stay in the middle of the pack. By then, we hope LM is gone.

The Rays have made their run because they were smart in taking the best players and they were right on most of them–that why its rorking to date. Still say they are in a downward turn if the people do not even show up for middle of the pack attendance.

One big issue with the Braves is the low ceiling players like Minor they picked high, they have chimped in the draft and player development just to keep a 90 or so mil payroll.

The fans want an owner that has some interrest in baseball, and LM bought the team for reasons that do not benefit us in any way shape or form.
