Yes. RT @RandallThomason: @ajcbraves I know Simmons now gets pro-rated ML minimum salary. Does Pastor’s pay revert to minor league level?
Ouch! I never thought about it before. That’s gotta suck. So he’s going from making $500k a year to something like $50k a year? What would his pay be in the minors?
phil, the answer is it’s both. Which is why it will be interesting to see what happens after the SS switch. A lot of research has been done on this kind of stuff, and there’s a strong case to be made the batting average given up on balls in play, particularly ground balls, is affected strongly by the range of the defensive players.
DOB, it has been suggested that the on-field guys (like Fredi) were in favor of Simmons from the beginning at ST…
Virtually everyone was at the beginning of camp, when he stood out in the workouts before first games, then hit better than Pastornicky in first 10 days or so of games. Then it turned significantly, in terms of Pastornicky hitting and Simmons struggling mightily at the plate for last 3 wks of games. At that point, more people were in favor of Simmons going down and getting some more seasoning, hitting at a higher level than Class A. Which he has done for first eight weeks of the season in impressive fashion.
i didnt like the strategy last night either. bottom of the 8th, the cards pitcher is wild. 8 straight balls, two on none out, and prado. is bunting. prado, the guy who has hit like .350 this month. the hottest hitter on the team! braves scored 2 runs in that inning, but i didnt like giving up an out to a wild pitcher.
DOB…if by chance Simmons has the jitters and there’s an error charged to the kid…can you temporarily shut-down the blog for a few minutes?
I’m sticken to my initial thought. Would have been much cooler to see each kid get 80 games and split the year to really see what we have. Make this season into an epic fight for the job. 80 is plenty of playing time to learn and not enough to burn!
For the past couple of years, some of the “baseball experts” and scouts within the Braves organization have been telling anyone who’ll listen that Pastornicky was the next great Braves SS….all while he was booting the ball consistently in the minors.

They are on a pace to lose 75 this year, my pre-season prediction was 77 lose’s, without CHIPPER they will be about 70-92 next year unless a lot of different players. This team has a mind set that they cannot win consitently without CHIPPER. 19-5 with him 9-19 when he does not start.
Diaz swings at a ball that almost hit him and only purpose was to move the runner over.
Predicting at what ball Diaz will swing at is completely impossible. Anyway, I saw the replay multiple times and still don’t think that Diaz was purposefully giving up, leading to the assumption that it was a strategy decision. You think he was. No big deal. We just have to wait for Diaz’s next confessional to get to the truth…

It is Jim, I do like your sense of humor, wish more people had it. You are good people.
I wonder if Carlos Quentin could be had relatively inexpensively from the Padres? Just coming off of surgery in a contract year… you know he’s going to be busting his ass to try and earn his next deal.
The Padres are completely out of the race and will be lucky to not lose over 100 games. I’d think that a handful of decent but not top-tier prospects could get the job done. Maybe Pastornicky and a couple of ok pitchers? I dunno… seems like he might be a guy worth kicking the tires on, especially if Chipper is going to be out more than we expected this season and Francrisco can’t handle the 3B duties.
I’m excited damnit! I love a flashy SS. I was seriously holding my breath whenever something was hit to Pastornicky. He put up good at bats, but come on, could you see hmi starting SS in a playoff game or even a late season do or die game?
May 31st,
Sopheee, I don’t think the luch would be very pleasant. I have NEVER, EVER even during last years Sept fall off read EASE questioning FREDI’s moves.
I hope Simmons runs with this…but i’m not going to expect more than one really good play per game with the glove and similar if not worse offensive numbers.
Yikes? Was that hating on the kid? Border line troll talking?
Okay! Kids going to be great and i’ll buy his player T…….jeeesh!
especially if Chipper is going to be out more than we expected this season
Well, considering that nobody in this joint would give the man credit for more than 100 games, to start with, I guess he’d have to be darn near retired completely to miss “more than expected”.
Oh and that was because you never put me on your good blogger list Georgre. If you had, then maybe more truthful posts might have been written, but all you got for your resistance was me bucking the system.

So is it the pitching or the defense? There just can’t be any definitive way to measure that stuff because it requires subjectivity.
Of course hit vs error often does too….the fences in some parks are shorter than in others….
Baseball can’t be measured as precisely as pro basketball can, and even it has the subjectivity element present with things like assists….

forgot I had to keep thinks very very simple for some of you so you can understand.
Guess you just overlooked that is how we have to treat you…and that you yourself must keep it simple for even you to understand yourself. Got it Georgre?

This team has a mind set that they cannot win consitently without CHIPPER
By my calculations, going all the way back to May 29, 2012, we have won every game we have played without Chipper…now, try calling that a small sample size…

It is Jim, I do like your sense of humor, wish more people had it. You are good people.

Okay, I’m not paying much attention, and did not sleep much last night, but whats Shaun’s point on Bonds.
Heyward was a much better hitter at 20 than Bonds at 21.
But Bonds improved at 22, and 23, fell off some at 24, took off at 25.

George I get what you are saying, okay so we are dipping down to a 70 win season next year, no Chipper and god forbid our coach sucks.
I don’t agree that the wheels will far off. This is a pretty good baseball team (yes the losing streak was hard to take in).

If Heyward keeps working at it, puts all his effort into it, he just might be the next Harold Baines.

If Heyward would hit the damn ball, something he seems incapable of doing on a consistent basis, then I like our chances next year….

Is Chipper contemplating just hanging it up right now?
I doubt it very seriously, but it’s gotten very quiet where he’s concerned.

I’m excited damnit! I love a flashy SS. I was seriously holding my breath whenever something was hit to Pastornicky. He put up good at bats, but come on, could you see hmi starting SS in a playoff game or even a late season do or die game?

I hope Simmons runs with this…but i’m not going to expect more than one really good play per game with the glove and similar if not worse offensive numbers.
Yikes? Was that hating on the kid? Border line troll talking?
Okay! Kids going to be great and i’ll buy his player T…….jeeesh!

especially if Chipper is going to be out more than we expected this season
Well, considering that nobody in this joint would give the man credit for more than 100 games, to start with, I guess he’d have to be darn near retired completely to miss “more than expected”.

murph, i think quentin would also be a good choice for us because of his familiarity with our hitting coach. the guy can change a game, and weve have some ABs available for a corner outfielder, in my opinion.
