eirk – WTF is YOUR problem douche? If MInor is good enough that he will be better in the future, then why would we want to trade him? If he’s not, then why would the Cubs leap at the chance to dump the only thing they have going for them and pay his salary for us, too?

I say Mike Minor and Heyward to the Cubs for Dempster

Or, how to gut a franchise in one easy step.

No matter if Cubs pick up his salary, he’s likely gone after this year. So you’ve just handed over 2 first round picks for 4 months of one starting pitcher.

Minor and Heyward are struggling, but they have much more value than that.

Minor is going to be a very good pitcher in the near future while Heyward is going to be average at best?

Ummmmmmm… well… I don’t know that I would agree with either of those assessments based on performances to date.

Minor has just completed one of the absolute worst months put forth by a Braves SP in decades (rivaled most recently by Derek Lowe’s horrible September last season).

Heyward’s about where he should be at this point in his career. (By that, I mean he’s within the realm of what we would have reasonably expected in, say, February or March of 2010.) But there are a lot of factors in play that cause many to view him as a disappointment.

erik, I don’t disagree with the idea of going after Dempster… but keep in mind that Wren has traded for much better players while giving up much less than Minor/Heyward in return.

Whether Heyward’s ceiling is .240 or not is immaterial… the fact is that pretty much everyone in baseball thinks he has the potential to be a superstar, still, even with all of the struggles he’s gone through. It’s that view of his potential, valid or not, that makes his value so much higher than Dempster.

On the flip side, Minor’s potential is viewed as a middle of the rotation starter at best. I don’t think there’s a single scout or GM who would say otherwise. Maybe he could be included in a deal to upgrade the starting pitching staff, but he alone, given his horrible terrible no good very bad May, would not fetch Dempster’s shoe, let alone the rest of him.

I could see Dempster getting traded for Minor or Gilmartin if FW was desperate for a starter.

Saw some posts a few days ago about Heyward and Stanton and didn’t get a chance to comment.

Actually, that day you commented plenty. It apparently took you all weekend to go look up his WAR… a number you once dismissed as a “counting stat” when it didn’t aptly fit your needs.

Heyward/Stanton Games played: 318/298.

At any rate, the Heyward/Stanton comparison was for 2011/2012. In that time Stanton has out preformed Heyward in WAR as well. (3.6/5.5).

Stanton was brought up because they were the two prominent outfield prospects prior to 2010 which nearly everyone across the globe concluded Heyward was more advanced, the better of the two. They are the same age. Brought up in the same season. In the same division…. And they are still the same age, same division. The only player of those two who is within the realm of what we would have reasonably expected in, say, February or March of 2010 is Stanton, not Heyward.

TennPaul, I remember it well, indeed. I obviously had a less-than-reasonable expectation of Heyward in March 2010.

Think about this: in Shaun’s timeframe of sprint 2010, no one would have forecast injury-related decline for Heyward. I think it’s more than reasonable to say that any projections, by anyone, at that time would have assumed health. So, what Shaun is saying is that, given good health and two-plus years in the bigs, a reasonable expectation for a kid who was the early-season odds-on pick for ROY in 2010, a first-rounder who had hospitalized minor league pitching while young for every level, would have been a .750-ish OPS, at this point in time.

As far as the words “reasonable” and “expectation”, I don’t think those words mean what Shaun thinks they mean. :-)

TennesseePaul

Running through that old blog was kind of fun. Found N8’s friendly wager…

I’ll lay down a friendly wager that at season’s end (if Nate actually starts as many games) that Freeman has more walks than Nate. Some of that might be because of the pitcher’s spot behind him. But Freeman appears to be a more patient hitter to me (at this point).

Forgot about that. Nate didn’t end up playing as many games as Freeman, but he did end with 44BB to Freeman’s 53… and in only half the plate appearances.

Also the appearance of a patient hitter in Freeman is still lacking to me. Love that kid but I just don’t see that…

He certainly wasn’t in the minors; he liked to bang on the first strike he saw. Being that I’m a fan of being aggressive in the strike zone, this naturally endeared him to me.

Still, there’s a difference between pitcher’s strikes and hitter’s strikes, and maybe recognizing the difference is becoming part of his maturation process.
