Braves quotes after Monday’s loss to Reds

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On leaving Minor in after giving up two and then three consecutive homers

“It’s a teaching moment, a good moment for him to go back out there. He only gave up four solo home runs. I thought the kid pitched OK. It was a good chance for him to go back out there and hang around. We keep talking to our pitchers about just hang around, give yourself a chance to win a ballgame.

“I thought he did better in that fifth and sixth inning. His breaking ball started to have more depth to it. Hopefully he carries this on to his next start and keeps getting better and learns from it.”

“It could have been the ballpark. [But] we didn’t hit. It was a weird game. I think all the runs were on solo home runs. The old adage is that solo home runs don’t beat you. But we didn’t hit. We didn’t give him an opportunity. But I saw something in Mike today. I saw some growth in him.”

On the homers, which have plagued him for a while now; can you even judge those in this park?

“Well, I think one may have been a legit home run in a bigger ballpark. Maybe the other ones are off the wall. But it’s there for both teams. We gave up three more than they did.”

You beat Shields and Price in Tampa, come here and do nothing against guy with an 8 ERA at this ballpark

“This game is crazy. It really is crazy. The only thing, you go out tomorrow and we’ve got Beach going for us, and hopefully we get our bats going again.”

**MIKE MINOR

Did the ballpark have anything to do with some of the homers?

“I don’t think it was the ballpark. The pitches were up. All of them were up. It’s just what they did, home runs. If I’d get the ball down those balls aren’t hit as well. But they are good hitters, and they did what they’re supposed to do.”

Take any positive from coming back and pitching well in 2 innings after 3-homer 4th?

“I don’t think I allowed another baserunner after that, so I can take that, and I can also take that they were all solo shots. It was four runs instead of six or more. Just got to take it one day at a time and try to get better.”

The home runs have really hurt you lately

“Yeah, I’m a four-seam pitcher. Even my outs are pop-ups, a lot of them. That’s just what happens if good hitters come through a lineup like that and they know I’m going to give them fastballs. And they were sitting on my best pitch, which is the changeup, which tonight wasn’t very good. That’s what three out of the four home runs were [on].”

On getting out of bases-loaded jam with Votto flyball

“I didn’t really feel pressure with the bases loaded and Votto up because I feel like I’ve been in that situation four or five starts in a row. I’m kind of, I wouldn’t say getting used to it, but it’s easier to handle, something I’ve been working on throughout the week. Just buckling down and if he does get a hit there hopefully it’s only one run and I take that as a positive.”

More on problem with the changeup

“Early in the game it was a flatter pitch that didn’t have a whole lot of depth, just on one plane and only had side-to-side movement. So it’s a lot easier for a hitter to keep their bat in the zone and hit it solid.”

And that’s a pitch you throw a lot when ahead of counts, situations where most of the homers were hit tonight

“In that situation it should have been a lot further out of the zone, or on the corner black. A lot of those, all of them were up pretty much. Except the first one to Stubbs, who kind of reached for it and got it.”

On being within one strike of getting out of inning, 1-2 count to Leake with 2 outs

“Yeah, all that happened with two outs. I knew Leake was a good hitter. I’ve known him since college, and I knew he hit in college, too. So it wasn’t like I was taking him lightly. Obviously I was throwing him off-speed pitches, and usually you throw a pitcher a lot of fastballs. I was throwing him inside fastballs, changeups … he knew that was my best pitch, too. His first AB, the first pitch was a changeup and he came around on it but still got on base and hit it well. It just shows you how good a hitter he is.”

**DAN UGGLA

Offensive struggles it more about Mike Leake tonight, or Braves hitters?

“It was both. He made good pitches. We only got two hits, so he was pretty much on. Those guys right there, when they have good stuff and they’re up here but they’ve struggled, those guys are dangerous, because his back’s up against the wall, so he’s bound to go out and do what he can do eventually.”

Beat Tampa Bay’s aces, couldn’t do anything vs. Leake

“That’s why it is a crazy game. We didn’t have it tonight.”

Even after the three homers, still a relatively close game

“It was only 4-1. We had time to come back. But he beared down and made pitches when he needed to.”

“Only” 4 HRs? You have got to be kidding. “It’s a crazy game?” The other pitcher’s ERA was NINE. Good teams don’t lose games like this. And good managers don’t stay with a pitcher who’s given up a season’s worth of homers and then gets 3 in a row hit against him in one inning. Pathetic. Gonzalez is as inept as manager as Willie Martinez was as DC at UGA. In over his head. This team will not play to it’s potential by season’s end.

You’re kidding, right? You can not actually believe what you are saying, can you Freddie? Minor leads the Major Leagues in HR’s allowed.

Freddie, you and Dave O. seem to live in this dream world where you think this kid will be the next Tom Glavine based on their first 31 starts. It ain’t happening, and even a blind man could see this. Take off your rose-colored glasses and move Minor out of the rotation.

Somebody already beat me to it, “Only 4 homeruns” that has to be the most idiotic statement a manager has ever said. When any pitcher gives up 4 homeruns in a single game, let alone to the opposing pitcher with 2 outs, that is downright pathetic. Now Minor has a losing record, and around a 7 era. How is that going for you now Mikey? Get lost man.

Minor gave up just 5 hits, which is not bad until you see that 4 were HR’s. I think he deserves to stay up and get OJT. If these hitters could do anything against worthless pitchers it would have been a different ballgame. I do not understand why terrible pitchers shut down Braves hitters for what seems like the past 5 years or so.

Zac the “Right call” for Fredi would have been to have sent him down to AAA . How is giving up 3 back to back to back HRs a good thing. Ony Fredi can find a positive out of a putcher being slugged out of the stadium……We need a more proactive Manager thats gonna pull the plug on a pitcher with a 6.96 ERA and giving up 12 HRs in 9 starts.

birddawg92

The game is played to win. Minor absolutely must be pulled after the 3rd of the back-to-back-to-back (and truly, given his recent history, after the 2nd). You do it as much for the team’s morale as for whatever’s left of his psyche—at that stage (the 3rd or 4th inning or so), if you stop ‘em right there you have a chance to win. Again, D-Lowe all over again. They should put Medlen or Hernandez in there and send Minor to Gwinnett.

I just meant I would have pulled him after the fourth, and, in hindsight, that would have cost us two clean innings. I really would like a spot start from Livan to let Minor work stuff out. I wouldn’t mind action either, I just thought criticizing him for not speaking ill of his players was silly.

birddawg92

Just because you didn’t pull him doesn’t mean you would not have still gotten 2 more scoreless innings. He WALKED the next guy after the 3 HRs in a row and was on the verge of getting us completely blown out of the park. Odds were at that stage, again actually after the 2nd homer, that he was going to get shelled. Fredi just got lucky. His luck won’t hold up the next 3-4 months, just like it ran out last year. Just mind-boggling the bass-ackwardness sometimes.

I honestly cannot stand the negative comments I read on this every single time we play poorly. Jesus christ every team loses and players go through struggles. Read the blog from today and look up Maddux/Glavine early stats they are awful. Not comparing them to Minor but the kid is young he’s leaving some pitches up and its getting ugly. It’s a tough decision but we look at the NOW too often without taking future into consideration. If he continues to cough it up then ultimately he should go down but lets honestly give him a few more appearances and see if he can adjust.

Just honestly take some chill pills and relax it’s just one damn game. BTW I like Fredi G. and for all you “fire fredi” people who would you rather have? Guillen loud mouth self? Bobby V player rippin self? Just curious all you GM out there who yap withouth thinking aka ignorant fans

We talk about allowing Minor and Delgado to learn like Smoltz and Glavine. Well with the particular Brave teams that Smoltz and Glavine learned on were not in play-off contention and because of that they sold players off like Doyle Alexander and Dale Murphy. But this is a contender so the players to compare these young pitchers would be. Kevin Millwood, Jason Marquis, Odalis Perez, Jason Schmidt, Jojo Reyes, Horacio Ramirez, Steve Avery, Kent Merker, Chuck James, Buddy Carlyle, Kyle Davies, and Damien Moss…….Now how did they handle all those young pitchers……..All were young pitchers on a playoff contender. What happened to all of them was either you perform or you get sent down or we trade you for a better starter. In EVERY CASE. When you have a chance to win you GO FOR IT. Now all Im calling for is just signing Oswalt…..other than the money its low risk, since you dont trade any prospects and you can have a better chance to win.

See thats the problem and why Atlanta teams have only ONE CHAMPIONSHIP. The Fans dont like to ask the “Negative Questions” and hold teams accountable. WithRemember to make a diamond you need pressure. Pressure on sports teams makes them better. Now I feel that the Brave have improved but they still have flaws and they need to addressthem because we have choked big leads 2 years in a row. So now we have to show we can play good in September. The Falcons are under pressure now because of not winning a playoff game and I personally think it will make them better. Now the Braves need this same pressure and to be held ACCOUNTABLE!!!!!!!

Minor’s last two innings were fine — I agree with Freddie G. that he can take something from that. Also, Leake is no slouch. He out-pitched Mike tonight, and has been an effective major leaguer for two seasons now. I’m not making excuses — Mike should never have allowed three HRs in a row with two outs, and we seemed out of sorts at the plate: less disciplined, more hasty, a bit perfunctory — that costly error by Francisco! We’ll bounce back. Road trips are tough, and if we split this series, I’ll be satisfied.

I know Fredi’s trying to be a player’s manager and not throw the kid under the bus, but COME ON. “Only 4 home runs”? Statements like that go a long way toward discouraging any fan confidence in the current Braves skipper.

The Braves are still in first place thankfully, but there are already serious signs that things could go south in a hurry. Minor’s becoming an automatic loss every fifth day and Delgado can’t shake the “one bad inning” syndrome that has killed him so far this season. Jason Heyward’s average has plummeted about 60 points the past couple of weeks. Johnny Venters is keeping the ball up and getting hit hard; he just doesn’t so far seem to have anywhere near the control he did last year.

I’m not saying the 2012 Braves are doomed, but it’d be nice for a change if the manager and the players began to acknowledge obvious concerns instead of spewing company line drivel (and I REALLY hope the Braves broadcasts get rid of that stupid Twitter thing; you know good and well they’ll never show anything that in any way can be construed as negative or critical, even when said comments are justified). Freddi Gonzalez in particular tends to make statements to the media that give the impression he has no clue about anything. You just don’t talk about how well your guy pitched who just lost his sixth straight decision and gave up four home runs, PERIOD. You have to balance encouragement with accountability.

Why i’m not more sympathetic toward Minor was from that trade ultimatium…….I get that you were a 1st round pick. But who the hell are you to give ultimatiums, Look at Brandon Beachy a guy that wasnt a 1st round pick heck he wasnt even drafted. But what does he do he goes out there and gets better and hold himself accountable. You ran your mouth and havent performed 6.96 ERA (2nd worst in the NL) 12 HRs allowed (worst in the Majors), and a .286 average. So when you talk garbage YOU BETTER PERFORM…………You should be in AAA

NEXT MAN UP!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not hears anyone besides DOB from MLBTRADERUMOR.Com Its just MY OPINION that we need Oswalt because we have question marks at the #4 and 5 spots. — J-Man

Thank you, J-Man, until this comment I don’t think we knew where you stood on the Oswalt situation. Jerry from Augusta, you’re up next. Any point you’d like to make 12 times a day for the next week?

Appreciacte the reply DOB…….But what how is giving up 4 HRs a good thing. Also how is a 6.96 ERA (2nd worst in the NL) 12 HRs allowed (worst in the Majors), and a .286 average acceptable. In fact the only reason Minor is still here is because he is a Lefty and we dont have any Lefties that can start

But the main point is not Oswalt…..its the fact we have a Starter with a 6.96 ERA. And he keeps getting thrown out there every 5th day……Remember Lowe being thrown out every 5th day with a 5+ERA getting lit up and us missing the playoffs by ONE GAME. Similar stories.

We get it you don’t want Minor in the rotation yet you’ll moan like the little school girl that you sound like when we put someone else in there who doesnt perform to your standards. Understand the game before you keep bashing a 26-17 team. Or why dont u put on a glove and take the hill next start maybe you’ll have better luck. Take care. Go Braves. My blogging bashing career is over a little overrated but when we roll tide tomorrow i dont wanna sniff your negative ass from the comforts of my home.

“Julio Teheran, Todd Redmond, Livian Hernandez, Kris Medlen, heck Christian Martinez.”

You listed 3 important parts of our bullpen – and while I’m all about Medlen starting, you have to remember he’d be on an innings limit this year…I’m not sure Livan could be any better as a starter, and Cristhian Martinez is totally unproven as a starter. You’d need to get another multi-inning capable reliever in there, which I’m not sure we have. Teheran is just as inconsistant as Minor – he got shelled about a week ago, then threw 7 good innings Sat night.

Todd Redmond might be your only somewhat logical choice – but no experience in the ML – so…unproven, again.

Im not being negative in fact I have high expectation for this team…….I dont want what happened last year to happen again. But you must have an impressive computer if it allows you to “Sniff your negative ass” ……you must have smell-o-vision……..Remember these are WORDS they involve the sense of VISION, not the sense of SMELL……But it must be confusing with all those Strawberry Shortcake stationary books you used to have growing up right next to your Barbie dolls and Dresses. But I understand why you saw Ken as a role model sense both of you have no balls…………..

I disagree J-Man about Minor being in the majors because he is the only lefty. If we look at the other options:

Julio Teheran might be tearing up AAA, but so would Minor. Teheran gave up more homers than any starter in Spring Training against Major League pitching. He still has things to work out.

Jurrjens, if still in the majors, would probably have the worst ERA

Medlen is no longer stretched out, and actually, neither is Livan (although i suspect that he could still probably start)

I don’t see any other options, except possibly a Todd Redmond, but who knows what he can do?

What I saw with minor was just lack of command. He pitched 2 strong 1-2-3 innings at the end of his outing, and in the 2nd inning, he should’ve gone 1-2-3 if it weren’t for the francisco error. If he could’ve located his offspeed stuff the whole game the way that he did in those final 2 innings, we would’ve seen an entirely different pitcher. His problem is command, and i don’t see anybody internally doing anything better for us at the moment. I think that he has to get through this because he can help the team a lot if he can just find the consistency.

One more thing, I may be one of the only people other than you that believes that Oswalt could be of help. Another veteran would be nice, because i really don’t see internal options being of any significant help

“The game is played to win. Minor absolutely must be pulled after the 3rd of the back-to-back-to-back”

Ummm, no dude. You try and get more innings out of him, because we’re playing like 30 games in 31 days. You replace him after only 4 IP and you run the risk of destroying your bullpen in the grand scheme of things. This isn’t football.

While Oswalt might be a great option, in theory, his salary last year was $16mil – I don’t see him taking a drastic pay cut – and as I stated, he’s already turned down one offer of 1 year/$10 mil, so…

And here are the fickle, uneducated fans DOB keeps tweeting and blogging about.

“Only 4 HR’s” as in, only four “SOLO” Hr’s. Read between the quotes people. The man gave up only 5 hits. I like the approach they’re taking with the kids and Minor. You need to be patient with young players. They’re never superstars their first year, or two or three. Sometimes they take 4, or 5, or 6 years.

Delgado’s got a good mound presence, at least. Minor just seems sulky and hangdog out there after every mistake he makes…but never recovers. Say what you will about JJ, but he never pouted on the mound, nor has he overused post-game phrases like “I just made non-competitive pitches” or “That’s what hitters do to mistakes at this level.”

Wouldn’t it be nice — just once — to see Mike Minor show some fire out there? I half expected him to trash the dugout after the back-to-back-to-back home runs today…and I would’ve welcomed it.
