On having McCann, Chipper, Heyward up in 8th after getting 2 on w/ 1 out
“Chapman did a nice job wiggling out of that situation. We had some opportunities; I think the inning before we had some people on base also, and they got out of it.
“When Mac swung and that ball left the bat, I thought we had a chance. I guess it got too much air under it.”
See anything different from Venters during these recent rough outings?
“I haven’t seen the video, but I’m sure some of the balls that were hit, were fastballs that didn’t have any depth to them. That’s something that can be fixed real easily. We’ll keep running him out there. All of a sudden you see a 93-, 94-mph fastball that that bottom just disappears to it.
“It’s unfortunate that it happened with Jonny in the eighth inning, but it’s not worrying me either. We’ll keep running him out there. He’ll be just fine.”
On Pastornicky error, tossing ball to nobody at second base
“He just didn’t know the runners were running on 3-2, two outs, I’m assuming. You’ve got three balls, two strikes, two outs, the runners are moving and the play’s at first base.”
Should Uggla have gone to cover second anyway?
“No. In that situation you hold your positions because you want to get the out at first base.”
Does a mistake like that happen to anyone, more often with a rookie?
“I think it happens more with younger players than veteran guys. Really, that’s elementary stuff, those kinds of situations. But it’s the big leagues and it’s his first year. We were praising him on how he’s handled all these situations this afternoon [during manager’s pregame session with media]. I might have jinxed him myself.”
On Delgado’s outing
“You’ve got to tip your hat to him. He goes 6-2/3 innings, gives up an unearned run, gives us a great chance to win the ballgame. You just keep seeing great things about him. He fielded his position there in the seventh inning to get the lead runner at third base. He just keeps getting better. You can’t wait for him to go back out there five days from now and see what he can do.”
“He had some blurring in his right eye. He went through a couple of pairs of contacts and couldn’t get it fixed. Our team eye doctor is going to see him tonight and see if we can get that corrected.”
Been going on a couple of days, or just tonight?
On his two-run eighth inning
“Just leaving pitches out over the plate, falling behind, not making pitches when I need to. And they made me pay for it. I’ve got to do a better job of going out there and attacking hitters, throwing strikes early in the count. I didn’t do that tonight, and I cost my team the game.”
Arm feels OK after taking a few days off recently for soreness?
“My arm feels great. Like I said, I’m falling behind a lot of hitters. Can’t do that, especially late in the games. I’ve been allowing a lot of baserunners, and tonight I just didn’t make any pitches when I needed to.”
Just something relievers go through, something you can fix soon?
“I’ve just got to do a better job, like I said, of going out there and attacking guys. I’m making a lot of non-competitive pitches, pitches that guys aren’t even thinking about offering at. And I’m making even worse pitches over the plate and they’re hitting the ball hard. I’ve got to do a better job of keeping the ball down and throwing some strikes early in the count.”
Notice anything different about your sinker this year?
“There’s been times where my sinker’s been good and times where it’s been bad. I definitely need to be a little more consistent. As long as I keep the ball down I think I’ll be all right. Sinkers up in the zone aren’t a real good pitch. Just the way it goes sometimes.”
On pitch that Phillips hit off the wall
“He hit a slider over the plate. It was down, but it was over the plate. He put a good swing on it.”
Fredi said he thought Tyler must not have realized they were running w/ 2 outs
“Yeah, those things right there, they happen. That’s how we learn. It was unfortunate it happened right there because the run scored, but he played his butt off tonight. Believe me, he feels as bad as anybody tonight.
“Like I said, those things happen.”
On Homer Bailey allowing one run in 6-2/3 innings
“He pitched well tonight, kept us off-balance, made pitches when he needed to. The bats just weren’t there tonight. Delgado pitched his butt off.”
On the error on toss to no one at second base
“It’s unacceptable. Had a play up the middle, I was just figuring, throw it to second. But with two outs I’ve got to go to first. It’s one of those learning experiences. You’ve got to take it for how it is.”
Fredi said he thought you just didn’t realize they were running w/ 2 outs, 3-2 count
“Yeah, I should have communicated a little better before the play. It’s just one of those learning experiences. It’s unacceptable. It can’t happen, especially in that situation. All I can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Frustrating to pitch well three in a row and get no wins out of it?
“No, all I can do is try to do my job and help the team as best as I can. I don’t think like that. It happens. It’s baseball. You can’t control it.”
On his run of three good starts
“I’m just trying to keep the ball down in the strike zone. It was a good game for both teams. We lost the game, but we’ve been playing good.”
You feel like you’ve turned a corner with your last few starts?
“Yeah, I just try to work hard every day, just do the best I can do and put into practice what I try to learn.”
