Braves quotes after Monday loss to Reds

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On having McCann, Chipper, Heyward up in 8th after getting 2 on w/ 1 out

“Chapman did a nice job wiggling out of that situation. We had some opportunities; I think the inning before we had some people on base also, and they got out of it.

“When Mac swung and that ball left the bat, I thought we had a chance. I guess it got too much air under it.”

See anything different from Venters during these recent rough outings?

“I haven’t seen the video, but I’m sure some of the balls that were hit, were fastballs that didn’t have any depth to them. That’s something that can be fixed real easily. We’ll keep running him out there. All of a sudden you see a 93-, 94-mph fastball that that bottom just disappears to it.

“It’s unfortunate that it happened with Jonny in the eighth inning, but it’s not worrying me either. We’ll keep running him out there. He’ll be just fine.”

On Pastornicky error, tossing ball to nobody at second base

“He just didn’t know the runners were running on 3-2, two outs, I’m assuming. You’ve got three balls, two strikes, two outs, the runners are moving and the play’s at first base.”

Should Uggla have gone to cover second anyway?

“No. In that situation you hold your positions because you want to get the out at first base.”

Does a mistake like that happen to anyone, more often with a rookie?

“I think it happens more with younger players than veteran guys. Really, that’s elementary stuff, those kinds of situations. But it’s the big leagues and it’s his first year. We were praising him on how he’s handled all these situations this afternoon [during manager’s pregame session with media]. I might have jinxed him myself.”

On Delgado’s outing

“You’ve got to tip your hat to him. He goes 6-2/3 innings, gives up an unearned run, gives us a great chance to win the ballgame. You just keep seeing great things about him. He fielded his position there in the seventh inning to get the lead runner at third base. He just keeps getting better. You can’t wait for him to go back out there five days from now and see what he can do.”

On Freeman

“He had some blurring in his right eye. He went through a couple of pairs of contacts and couldn’t get it fixed. Our team eye doctor is going to see him tonight and see if we can get that corrected.”

Been going on a couple of days, or just tonight?

“Just tonight.”

**JONNY VENTERS

On his two-run eighth inning

“Just leaving pitches out over the plate, falling behind, not making pitches when I need to. And they made me pay for it. I’ve got to do a better job of going out there and attacking hitters, throwing strikes early in the count. I didn’t do that tonight, and I cost my team the game.”

Arm feels OK after taking a few days off recently for soreness?

“My arm feels great. Like I said, I’m falling behind a lot of hitters. Can’t do that, especially late in the games. I’ve been allowing a lot of baserunners, and tonight I just didn’t make any pitches when I needed to.”

Just something relievers go through, something you can fix soon?

“I’ve just got to do a better job, like I said, of going out there and attacking guys. I’m making a lot of non-competitive pitches, pitches that guys aren’t even thinking about offering at. And I’m making even worse pitches over the plate and they’re hitting the ball hard. I’ve got to do a better job of keeping the ball down and throwing some strikes early in the count.”

Notice anything different about your sinker this year?

“There’s been times where my sinker’s been good and times where it’s been bad. I definitely need to be a little more consistent. As long as I keep the ball down I think I’ll be all right. Sinkers up in the zone aren’t a real good pitch. Just the way it goes sometimes.”

On pitch that Phillips hit off the wall

“He hit a slider over the plate. It was down, but it was over the plate. He put a good swing on it.”

**DAN UGGLA

Fredi said he thought Tyler must not have realized they were running w/ 2 outs

“Yeah, those things right there, they happen. That’s how we learn. It was unfortunate it happened right there because the run scored, but he played his butt off tonight. Believe me, he feels as bad as anybody tonight.

“Like I said, those things happen.”

On Homer Bailey allowing one run in 6-2/3 innings

“He pitched well tonight, kept us off-balance, made pitches when he needed to. The bats just weren’t there tonight. Delgado pitched his butt off.”

**TYLER PASTORNICKY

On the error on toss to no one at second base

“It’s unacceptable. Had a play up the middle, I was just figuring, throw it to second. But with two outs I’ve got to go to first. It’s one of those learning experiences. You’ve got to take it for how it is.”

Fredi said he thought you just didn’t realize they were running w/ 2 outs, 3-2 count

“Yeah, I should have communicated a little better before the play. It’s just one of those learning experiences. It’s unacceptable. It can’t happen, especially in that situation. All I can do is make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

**RANDALL DELGADO

Frustrating to pitch well three in a row and get no wins out of it?

“No, all I can do is try to do my job and help the team as best as I can. I don’t think like that. It happens. It’s baseball. You can’t control it.”

On his run of three good starts

“I’m just trying to keep the ball down in the strike zone. It was a good game for both teams. We lost the game, but we’ve been playing good.”

You feel like you’ve turned a corner with your last few starts?

“Yeah, I just try to work hard every day, just do the best I can do and put into practice what I try to learn.”

Prado looked like he was running in molasses. Wilson got the bunt down well. No way, Prado should have been out at 2nd unless he was loafing. Heck, it was going to be close at first.

Defensive lapses cost us this game. Pastornicky is a Liability with the defense, And McCann has lost so much agility that that Venters “Wild Pitch” would have been blocked by McCann 2 years ago. But it looks like Delgado is becoming the #3 pitcher Just say whatever tonight make Pastornicky take extra infield practice and make McCann get on an elliptical. McCann used to be a good blocker on low pitches now he seems to not be able to make the same defensive plays he used to

Diaz is going good – got another hit. Why not PH him for Heyward in 8th: Jason had no chance against lefty in that situation.
In the who would have believed it dept: preferring Livan and Durbin in the late innings to Venters. Venters contol is a problem, especially when the catcher is unable to block his balls in the dirt. Try Ross at C.
Other than that just a bad game, first one in a while.

It was just a poor performance…..It just seemed that the Braves were not mentally into the game. Except for Delgado. McCann seems to always misplay a ball in high leverage situations. It’s been happening ever since last season and it always complicates matters for the pitcher. That part of his game definitely needs to improve. He always does it in the late innings when if matters most

Oswalt?!? No, thank you. I’d much rather take our chances with the young arms that we have. Even in a loss, the experience they gain on every outing is a big plus for every one of them. Games like tonight’s are gonna happen… you learn what you can from them, then forget them and come back tomorrow and go at it again. This is a very good team… more road wins than total home games played… and health permitting, these Braves are going to be even better!

There is 0 chance the Braves even consider Oswalt. I detect some of you guys are just waiting for a bad game or two to jump back on the “Braves suck” bandwagon. Players are going to make mistakes and are going to have bad games. That doesn’t mean you bench them, trade them, release them or demote them. I haven’t seen the ‘Fire FG” crowd lately. Some bloggers only show up when they have something negative to say. How about you naysayers that were variously bashing FW,FG, Heyward, Chipper, McCann, Uggla, Bourne and Freeman come on and say “My bad. Guess I don’t know jack”. You too Sonny Clusters-go back and read some of your sarcasm about our future HOF third baseman Chipper. Where’s HT and Rafael coming on saying “Great team! Go Braves”

Fredi already tipped his cap to Delgado. Can you read ?

The defense was shoddy last night. Delgado had no-hitter type stuff last night.

Why isn’t nobody talking about how Heyward was playing too shallow on Jay Bruce’s double ? Bruce is a dead-pull hitter and had 10 home runs but Heyward’s playing him shallow ? Wow !

If Heyward was playing the correct defense then Bruce’s double would have been an easy fly ball out. He had to turn his back and run to the warning track to chase that ball.

7th Inning
Eric Hinske Ball, Ball, Ball, E Hinske grounded into fielder’s choice to first, T Pastornicky out at second,
This was the opportunity to get back in the game, to get the line moving, with a speedy runner on
first. I think Fredi should take the green light option off the table for everyone, cause I don’t remember it working at all for anyone swinging on 3-0 pitch. That was a momentum killer. If he walks, that might have changed the whole inning.

Great to see Jason Heyward reverting to his “bust” ways of last year and being TOTALLY overmatched by journeyman Sean Marshall. Great clutch-hitting Jason. Once again you wave at pitch to strikeout with runners in scoring position.

Great to see Fredi playing “russian roulette” AGAIN by bringing in Chad “PROCTOR” Durbin to pitch in a game-changing situation. Fredi, childhood actor who portrayed Ricky Ricardo JR. on the “I Love Lucy Show” got LUCKY! Durbin gave up a long flyball that missed leaving the Ted by 10 feet.

Great to see Jack “Julio Lugo LITE” getting to bat in crucial situations let alone at ALL. WHY is Jack Wilson on a MLB roster????!!!!!!

Great article on Michael Bourn. Bradley had the “guts” to mention everybody ELSES “secret” or “elephant in the room” that Bourn is a BORAS client. This translates to we BETTER ENJOY Michael this year because he’s going to be playing ELSEWHERE in 2013, THANK YOU once again LIBERTY CHEAPIA!!!

Trade EOF & Prado to Twins for Span. Gives the Braves more speed and if they can’t resign Bourn next season, they will be covered in CF. McCann is a puzzle, can’t see the Braves giving him a boatload of money. Braves have a good team, just need a few tweaks.

Braves are winning and that is great. It was nice to see a true major league second baseman Monday night, it is ashame he is on the opponents team. Uggla is terrible, 13 mil a year while infante is playing solid ball at miami, can play multiple position if called upon, and is paid 4 mil a year. Frank Wren is the biggest problem with the braves.

Questions that continue for Braves:
Can F Gonzalez manage better than 2011 as the season continue?
Can Heyward continue solid plate appearances?
Can Jones stay healthy enough to make a difference?
Will McCann be able to recover?
Can Atlanta find a left field to start full time that is MLB level?
Pitching: this time of year just hope they all continue without injuries —

There is a sixth inning wall that Hanson, Beachy, Minor and Delgado have a hard time getting past. They all seem to have over 100 pitches by the sixth inning. I can understand Delgado, but this is the third year for the other 3. It would seem that their arms would be more stretched out by now and their mental approach better to go into 8th inning with under 100 pitches. Leo used to have his starters throw side sessions between starts to strengthen their arms.
On a side note Hanson is really fighting the delivery change this year from last. You can actually see the difference from inning to inning. When he keeps his hands together longer and high before his delivery to the plate it causes the back of his left shoulder to face home plate, which gives him more mph on his fast ball. When he did this his fastball was 90-92 mph. When he separated his hands early and low, the left shoulder never closes to the plate and his fastball tops out at 88 mph. If I can see this from the center field camera shot on TV, then Braves and McDowell should see that also and remind him between each inning to maintain his consistency.

Wow… you blubberers and self-appointed experts are out in full force today… Rafael, you obviously need a new team to “root” for, if you’d only stop WHINING long enough to realize it… Larry, not even in your delusional best days as a self-proclaimed all-around sports legend could you come close to hitting one of those pitches… and, J-Man, good grief… still on that nutso Oswalt talk…I see you backed down after DOB made you look like a clueless baseball fan yesterday… when you are not stating the blatantly obvious (defensive lapses caused us the game) in one of your recaps, you’re coming up with these statements (like the one about Delgado’s ERA dropping 80 points – I told you yesterday that you can’t put as much stock as you do in statistics only 35 games into a 162-game season – see… I told you so) that are quite telling in regards to your baseball acumen (love the one about you wanting to run out a 40-year old with umpteen knee operations in the two-hole every night, too… sheesh)…

Let’s get it straight one more time, Armchairs:

NO team is going to be “on” every night…. hasn’t happened in a century of baseball yet and it NEVER will…

Even the best of hitters fail 7 out of 10 times… any thought that all hitters on a team can do better than this as a group all of the time is, well, STUPID…

Baseball is full of streaks and luck, period…

The Braves are playing some of the best baseball in the major leagues, period…

EVERY team will have an off night from time to time… that means ALL OF THEM…

None of you, I believe, has the clairvoyance to surmise what is in an individual’s mind, especially when you are watching him from a perch on a couch… Good grief, you guys are full of yourselves…

You are poor fans and you don’t understand Jack Wilson about baseball… GIVE IT UP!!!

@ijudgenot

Scouts all over talked about opposing pitchers techniques is an effort to help each other and Leo was given alot of advice and assistance as all teams recieved. Not sure that goes on as much today and the fact that the Gwinnett Braves do not have a good qualified pitching coach shows. At the last home game where jurrjeans pitched on a either sat or sun afternoon, it was very apparent the flaw in his technique. At the start of the 3rd inning I could not take it anymore and yell positive instruction to him, he immediately went to 91 and 92 from the 88 recorded speeds. I know people will laugh at this but it is so true. Rolling off the rubber versus pushing off the rubber was the only difference. When he rolled off the rubber his control was bad and arm trailed well into the pitch. When he pushed off the rubber hard, timing came together which influenced his control and allowed all his pitches to work properly. 91 to 92 fastball with control, a good breaking ball control. I look for jurrjeans to get stronger over the next few weeks and either be called back up or traded.

So now Lobosolo is a grammar teacher. Looking back at some of your posts, its a wonder you can even spell. “You hayseeds” what is that? I have more baseball knowledge in my little toe than you could ever know. So I suggest get out of your Mom’s basement and get a life. LOSER

In 2011, the best team in baseball (the Yankees), won 97 games and lost 65. Even if we win the WS, we, too, are going to lose 60-plus games. This was one of them.

Keep on telling yourself that, Al, as to baseball knowledge, but, like most armchairs you think you can surmise stuff just because you want to… spelling, Al, in your case, spelling…. didn’t answer my question either, I see… what is it about “you hayseeds” that you don’t understand? I’d be careful of hanging with the armchairs… that stuff will rub off on you and is near impossible to get off…..

alexis, when your training period on the binkie is over, just let me know…. should be about time for you to move on up the ladder of suck…. you know, your luster is a little matte itself….

Blah, Blah ,Blah…..Armchairs blah, blah ,blah.
Same old song and dance lamosolo you call everyone who posts an opinion an idiot and protray yourself as this all-knowing baseball guru. Your not and everyone thinks your a complete waste of space. But your just an armchair yourself your nothing but a replier, somebody posts something and you have to chime in and act like you know more than them. But in all actuality you in your self cannot think or have an opinion until somebody posts. And its always “Armchairs”……in case you havent noticed this is the internet everone is an armchair……even YOU. But me telling you the obvious does you no good because you will never leaarn.

Well all these experts here wow…….now Lobosolo is saying he is an expert, Jesus Christ. I knew you were crazy but you never mentioned you were an expert…….did you finally flip out. Also when did I post that I want a 40 year with “Umpteen” knee surgeries out there every night?????? I actually know Chipper cant go at it every day and hopefully Chipper will just be DH when we play the AL teams. But besides of your usual imagination getting out of control and you remember things that never happened I see now that you are going after other posters well I gotta admit I feel a little betrayed you were my crazy reply poster and now your cheating on me. Not cool dude.

I’m a Brave fan Tommy but its just too easy to mess with lobosolo. Hes like a parot………
Arrrgh ARMCHAIRS whew whoo, thats all he EVER SAYS. Also he tends to want to remember things that never happened. Plus he never has anything of his own to say…….look at his posts its always a reply or response to something another poster put up there. How about coming up with some ideas of your own but he doesnt do that because he is afraid to have someone point out how dumb his idea might be.
