Lance Lynn doesn’t look like a 6 game winner or the top ERA guy in the NL.
This is what happens when you face real hitters and not the weak Central division hitters.
nolie, I like Pastornicky too, but I seem him more as a utility guy. Not sure he has the arm to be a plus shortstop defensively. Although, if he can unload quickly AND throw accurately, he might be decent out there.
If he hits well, he might be able to play 2B every day for a team that gets plenty of offensive production from both corner infielders. Just my opinion.
No, phil — but when you say I’m jumping the gun I’m basing my OPINION on actually seeing McCovey many times AND a similar career start.
McCovey won Rookie of the Year in 1959. In 1960, if there was a Giants blog, he would have ben crucified. McCovey didn’t really explode until 1963….age 25.
Heyward reminds me of McCovey in a ton of ways.
But most around here just compare prospects to former Braves legends and if they don’t hit the mark, trade ‘em, cut ‘em, destroy ‘em.
it will be interesting to see if Tommy gets better and better feel of his fastball through this season – s/p injury and an adjusted motion. I also think he is still building up arm and shoulder strength.
And BTW phil I give you credit for responding. Most around here have no reference point for anything prior to Dale Murphy. You do, nolie, Venice Jim, Woody Woodward and a few others.
But when I saw Heyward 2 years ago I saw a junior edition of McCovey and I hope I’m right.
no, McFann, not trying to show Pastornicky the door. I wonder though If Simmons and Pastornicky are on the roster next season with no Jack Wilson. If so, I would think Pastornicky would get some work at 2B in the spring.
I pretty much agree Lawton, but h’s a hustler and he does a lot of small things pretty well with the bat, hitting very well in high leverage so far though of course thats a mighty small sample size so far. will never be a great SS no doubt, average range and arm at best.
funny thing is that he pitched in HS and hit 90, so his arm is not as poor as it looks, poor throwing mechanics at times
Keith Law said Pastornicky is either a everyday shortstop or a bench player. Says the bat doesn’t fit anywhere else. But I disagree. I think he could make a good 2ndbaseman, and would be a good number 1 or 2 batter in the future.
McCovey won Rookie of the Year in 1959. In 1960, if there was a Giants blog, he would have ben crucified. McCovey didn’t really explode until 1963….age 25.
Heyward reminds me of McCovey in a ton of ways.
So you’re saying the Braves should get one great year out of him before he splits.
and I agree, on Pastornicky’s range. But. I have been surprised that his range has been limited. He has very good speed and quickness. He must not get good reads off the bat?
No Bat — What I’m saying is that in 1960, McCovey had a rotten season but the Giants stuck with him. Much like Heyward in 2011. Comparable ages, comparable stats. And that’s why I think the Braves need to lock him and Freeman up pronto. Not so much McCann.
Agree w nolie on Rev. He’s a pleasant surprise at the plate so far, but in the field he’s marginal and probably won’t get any better. I complain about him, he’s not hurting this year’s team. In the long run, it’ll be Simmons.
Pastornicky batting 8th doesn’t allow him to use all his tools. He is a contact guy, can steal bases, move runners so on… But you don’t want your 8th batter moving runners over with the pitcher on deck, rarely will get a chance to steal a base. I see Pastor being a Prado type hitter without the 15 homer power.
Well if Pastornicky won’t ever reach those type numbers were better off giving the job to Simmons since his defense much better. The offensive difference between the two wouldn’t meaningful enough to make a decision on.
Terrible call by Matheny.. You must bunt in that spot. The pitcher’s chance of making contact is slim to begin with and if he did put it in play that chances of a grounder are much higher than a flyball. Maximize your chance to do something productive in that spot. Moving a runner to 2nd base should have been key in that spot. High % chance of a K or double play with the pitcher swinging.
Should have pinch hit for Lynn. I mean they are down 3 runs. Not only they don’t pinch hit. Lynn has high pitch count and is probably tired. Will be interesting to see what Lynn can do in the 6th.
Lance Lynn has looked quite good today in the large scheme of things. Hopefully, Hanson can make it through the tough portion of the Cardinals lineup and make it through six strong innings.
Nolie, what the hell does that mean? That’s like saying his breath is no worse than most folks. I think it goes back to the choices we had in spring. I was for Simmons, but it’s worked out well so far. I just miss a better than average glove at short.
Disagree on TP’s defense. It is suspect and am surprised he wasn’t switched to 2B in the minors. Last I heard, the excellent Cook Co., GA shortstop, Kaleb Cowart, who was drafted by the Angels has already been switched to 2B at Cedar Rapids, AA(I think) minor league team. He’s doing pretty well with the bat.
