CHICAGO – Evan Gattis was a great story in Braves spring training because of the highly unusual winding road he took to professional baseball, having been out of the game nearly four years while he worked odd jobs across the western states and chased new-age gurus in a search for happiness and the meaning of life.

Evan Gattis already has 13 homers and 38 RBIs in the minor leagues this season, and the Braves bumped him up to Double-A and moved him to left field to possibly help pave a quicker road to the majors.
Two months later, Gattis is another potentially great story, this time because of what he’s doing against minor league pitching and the increasing chance that we might see him in a major league uniform in the not-too-distant future.
He’s pummeling pitchers on a nightly basis, batting .368 with nine doubles, 13 homers and 38 RBIs in 28 games, for a .452 OBP and .821 slugging percentage in 106 at-bats and 126 plate appearances.
To repeat, he has 13 homers and a 1.273 OPS in 106 at-bats.
Before Tuesday, Gattis led all of pro ball in RBIs and was tied with Tigers minor leaguer Brad Eldred for the lead in RBIs.
Yes, as some skeptics have noted, he’s a man among boys – quite literally; he’s 25 and began the season in high-A ball, competing with a lot of 19- and 20-year-olds. But I dare say there are a lot of good 25-year-old hitters in the majors who could not do to minor league pitching what Gattis has done, last year at low-A Rome and this year at high-A Lynchburg and now Double-A Mississippi.
Gattis has wielded such a ferocious stick this year that the Braves decided after just three weeks to move him from his catching position to primarily left field and bump him up to Double-A. They want to see if the guy can handle left field well enough to play that position in the big leagues.
Let’s face it, with a right-handed power bat like this and considering his age, they don’t want to waste too much time having him toil in the minors at a position (catcher) where the Braves don’t figure to have an opening anytime soon. They have six-time All-Star Brian McCann under team control for another year and top prospect Christian Bethancourt perhaps a couple of years away.
(No, I’m not suggesting the Braves won’t re-sign McCann. At this point, I think that could go either way.)
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez sounds like a kid some afternoons when he enthusiastically begins his daily media session by telling reporters that “my man Gattis did it again last night,” and provides details about the latest exploits of the Texan that Gonzalez good-naturedly describes as a “knuckle-dragger” with thick, hairy forearms. (He means that as a compliment.)
Chipper Jones was seated on the dugout bench when Gonzalez brought up Gattis again before a weekend game at Colorado. He told Chipper that Gattis had homered again the night before.
“He’s an animal,” Chipper replied. “I went to Rome on rehab last year, played half of two games, and I saw him hit four bombs. It was unbelievable.”
This is a good point to say that if you missed the Gattis story in the spring, you’ll want to read it. Click here for a link to that story, or slap this into your browser: http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2012/02/29/braves-slugger-gattis-has-a-story-man-does-he-ever/
Last year was Gattis’ first full professional season. Only it wasn’t a full season, because he didn’t make a team’s roster out of 2011 minor league camp, so he stayed at extended spring training for another six or seven weeks until there was an opening at Rome.
Gattis was sent there in May and produced these numbers in 88 games: .322 (109-for-338) with 24 doubles, two triples, 22 homers, 71 RBIs, .386 OBP, .601 slugging.
Some wondered how much that .986 OPS would dip in a full season at a higher minor-league level. But so far it’s up by nearly 300 points. And Gattis has kept pounding balls since the promotion to Double-A.
After hitting .385 with nine homers, 38 RBIs and a .452 OBP and .821 slugging percentage in 28 games at Lynchburg, he’s hit .321 (9-for-28) with two doubles, four homers, nine RBIs and a .406 OBP and the same .821 slugging percentage in seven games at Mississippi.
Bethancourt, 20, is on the Double-A team’s DL with a strained hamstring. He wasn’t hitting much before he got hurt (.268/.298/.296), but the kid is extremely talented, with off-the-charts defensive skills and the potential to be a good hitter, as he showed last year in A-ball and also in the Arizona Fall League. He’ll return to catching at Mississippi when he comes off the DL, and for now Matt Kennelly is doing most of the catching there with Gattis as the backup.
So far, reports on Gattis’ outfield work have been pretty good. He’s likely not going to be much of a defensive outfielder, but the Braves just need him to be serviceable, because chances seem good that he’ll drive in a whole lot more than he lets in, as the axiom goes.
Gonzalez joked that he told assistant GM Bruce Manno to make sure he didn’t play Gattis in left when shortstop prospect Andrelton Simmons was at shortstop, for fear the thick Texan would run over the defensive whiz kid.
By the way, Gonzalez was among those who lobbied to get Gattis into the outfield after seeing the gaudy numbers he was producing in the first weeks of the season. Like Braves coaches and players, Gonzalez liked all that he saw from hard-working Gattis during big league spring training.
Some who write about drafts and minor leaguers and prospects for a living insist Gattis is not a prospect because of his age, and won’t be a good outfielder (unlike them, I’ll admit I honestly don’t know, since I haven’t seen him play the outfield). But the Braves sure consider him a prospect, taking into account that he missed four years (and also missed the wear-and-tear of four years of pro ball).
As long as they have him on their roster, the only opinions that matter are the ones of Braves decision-makers. And something tells me that if Evan Gattis keeps hitting a homer run about ever 17 at-bats (he has 39 in 666 minor-league at-bats) and OPS’ing at a .900 or above clip, other teams are also going to consider him a prospect – as in, a prospective member of their teams if the Braves can’t find a place for him and someday look to trade him.

Gattis and top Braves catching prosect Bethancourt (right) are both at Double-A Missisippi now, with Bethancourt on te DL recovering from a strained hamstring.
For now, he’ll keep dragging knuckles and slamming baseballs as Gattis tries to fulfill his dreams. Gattis told me this spring that in one of the first couple of days he was at big-league camp, he started crying when he thought about where he was, how he’d survived a few years of rambling and now was suiting up in the same clubhouse with Chipper, McCann and the rest of the Braves.
Maybe some day he’ll be in that big-league clubhouse for games that count. Don’t discount his chances. So far, he’s done nothing but surpass expectations (and silence some skeptics) with every opportunity and new challenge the Braves have put before him.
BRAVES LINEUP
• From last night: In case you went to sleep before it ended last night, here are few notes of interest from the Braves’ 5-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley.
Eric O’Flaherty hit David DeJesus with two out in the seventh inning, and manager Fredi Gonzalez was ejected for coming out of the dugout to question why rookie umpire Chris Conroy warned both benches after the incident. Managers will usually get ejected if they come out to argue about or question an umpire issuing warnings, especially if they do it while the warning is still being issued, as was the case last night.
Jason Heyward was hit by a Jeff Samardzija pitch in the top of the seventh inning, after Heyward had homered off him in the second inning. In both cases, the DeJesus and Heyward beanings, Gonzalez and Cubs manager Dale Sveum noted it was a one-run game and wouldn’t have made sense for either team to intentionally hit anyone there. Which was true.

Heyward hit this homer in the second inning Monday, and was hit by a pitch in the seventh. (AP photo)
Back to O’Flaherty: Dejesus ended up scoring after the next two batters reached on a bunt single and single. That was the eighth earned run charged to O’Flaherty in 11 innings this season, matching his earned-run total last season in 73-2/3 innings.
O’Flaherty led the majors with a 0.98 ERA last season that set a major league record for a pitcher in 75 or more appearances. This year his ERA is 6.55, the fourth-highest among qualifying NL relievers, one spot better than teammate Chad Durbin.
Durbin’s 8.25 ERA is the third-highest among NL relievers. He allowed a two-run homer in the ninth inning last night, giving him the most homers allowed (five) among NL relievers and tied for most all among major league relievers.
The other ugliest numbers for Durbin: Against right-handed hitters, he’s allowed a .375 average (12-for-32) with four homers, five walks, five five strikeouts and a .459 OBP and .813 slugging percentage. (Lefties have hit .250 with one homer.)
With runners on base, Durbin has allowed a .360 average (9-for-25) with three homers, five walks and a .467 OBP and .760 slugging percentage.
In seven career appearances at Wrigley he has an 8.59 ERA with 10 hits, seven runs and two homers allowed in 7-1/3 innings.
Tonight’s matchup: Braves rookie Randall Delgado will make his first start against the Cubs, while Ryan Dempster will make his 30th appearance and 18th start against the Braves.
Dempster has had some of his worst results against them – 2-12 with a 4.94 career ERA – but in his past five starts against the Braves, he has a 2.52 ERA and .198 opponents’ average with 41 strikeouts and 11 walks in 35-2/3 innings.
Dempster comes in on a roll, having allowed only two unearned runs and seven hits in 14 innings in his past two starts at Miami and at Cincinnati. He got no decision in either game, and totaled 14 strikeouts with three walks.
Righties are just 5-for-60 (.083), while lefties are 9-for-37 (.243). With runners in scoring position, he’s limited hitters to .095 (2-for-21), and in any situation with runners on it’s .103 (3-for-29).
After getting ahead in the count 0-and-1, he’s allowed a .078 average (4-for-51).
Against Dempster, Michael Bourn is 10-for-29 (.345) with five walks and a .441 OBP, Freddie Freeman is 1-for-2 with a homer and walk, and Chipper Jones is 12-for-46 (.261) with a homer and seven walks. Brian McCann is 0-for-12 and Dan Uggla is 2-for-13 with homer and five strikeouts.
• Heyward rocks Wrigley: After going 16 games without a homer, Heyward is 2-for-8 with two solo homers in his past three games. That included one in Monday’s series opener at Wrigley, where he’s thrived in his brief career.
Heyward has a .341 average (14-for-41) with five homers, 15 RBIs and a .404 OBP and .732 slugging percentage in 12 career games against the Cubs, including .409 (9-for-22) with four homers, 10 RBIs and a .955 slugging percentage in his past seven.
He’s hit .385 (10-for-26) with four homers, 10 RBIs and an .846 slugging percentage in eight games at Wrigley.
• And a few more notable stats:
– The Braves are now 0-5 on Mondays, 18-7 on other days
– After giving up back-to-back homers in the fifth inning – the only two runs he allowd in six – Tommy Hanson is 0-3 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts vs. Cubs.
– The Braves are 5-5 with a .280 batting average but a 5.81 ERA in their past 10 games. This after going 13-3 with a 3.49 ERA from April 10-April 27, when they scored 97 runs with 19 homers. The offense has stayed the same, pretty much. The pitching has not.

JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound
“I AM TRYING TO BREAK YOUR HEART” by Wilco
I am an American aquarium drinker
I assassin down the avenue
I’m hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you?
Let’s forget about the tongue-tied lightning
Let’s undress just like cross-eyed strangers
This is not a joke, so please stop smiling
What was I thinking when I said it didn’t hurt?
I want to glide through those brown eyes dreaming
Take it from the inside, baby hold on tight
You were so right when you said that I’ve been drinking
What was I thinking when I said good night?
I want to hold you in the Bible-black predawn
You’re quite a quiet domino, bury me now
Take off your Band-Aid because I don’t believe in touchdowns
What was I thinking when I said hello?
I’d always thought that if I held you tightly
You’d always love me like you did back then
Then I fell asleep and the city kept blinking
What was I thinking when I let you back in?
I am trying to break your heart
I am trying to break your heart
But still I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t easy
I am trying to break your heart
Disposable Dixie-cup drinking
I assassin down the avenue
I’m hiding out in the big city blinking
What was I thinking when I let go of you?
loves you
I’m the man who loves you

If Bethancourt comes back from the DL and does what it seems he is capable of doing for the remainder of this year and next year the odds of the Braves re-signing McCann seem pretty low.
Especially when you consider that recently the Braves have had a working strategy of starting rookies to open a season (Heyward, Freeman, Pastornicky). Also McCann will be reallllly expensive.. the drop in value between him and Bethancourt might not be worth $15 million a year in payroll. The drop probably won’t even be -that- bad due to Bethancourts superior defensive skills.

I like Victorino, but would not be worth a long term contract IMHO. Hamilton would be too expensive and probably a long shot. If Simmons is ready next year I could see him beating out Pastornicky at SS. So if Bourn is not kept then perhaps Pastornicky could be converted to CF. Certainly has the tools for it.

Teheran has looked a little better his last two outings…9 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. The important part being the 1 BB in 9 innings, as opposed to the 10 BB in his previous 16 innings.
Also, after a slow start, Andrelton Simmons starting get hot at the plate. Hitting .406 during current 8-game hitting streak. He’s now 7th in the Southern League in average, at .320.
And then obviously Gattis leading the minor league world in nearly every category.
Good stuff…

With the way Pastornicky is hitting it sucks that he can’t hit higher than 8th. There’s almost nowhere else to put him though. He puts the bat on the ball quite well, I could see him as a #2 hitter someday.
He hit in 2 slot in the minors. Who knows, if he stays and beats out Simmons possibly could bat there next season. Especially that Bourn probably leaves and Prado maybe leadoffs.

True dat, but we’re not talking about bringing one of these guys up to displace a guy throwing decent innings with a sub-5.00 ERA. We’re talking about bringing one of them up to take Durbin’s place.
And I still think Gearrin is going to be a quality reliever at the ML level. Last year, he had a line of 16 IP, 11 H, 6 BB, 21 K, 3.38 ERA before he blew up 2 of his last 3 outings, so he’s shown he can get out major league hitters. Chapman may never be more than a AAA pitcher, but I just get aggravated seeing Gearrin down there while Durbin is throwing 87 mph meat down the middle.

I believe Dempster’s ‘glove waggle’ came from earlier in his career he was tipping pitches with something he did with his glove on off speed stuff. So he came up with that on every pitch.

Great new DOB blog today, thanks David. Perfect read to get in the baseball watching mode after a long dreary day at work. The Gattis story this spring was pretty cool and it’s great to see him do well this year. I hope he gets promoted to AAA if only so that I could see him play when Gwinnett travels up to NY in June.

I hope the Braves take their time bringing up Evan slowly as he’s learning to play the corner OF spot. No need to rush him this season. Let him learn and get some seasoning and get him out from behind the plate.
Even if McCann leaves or is traded down the road, I think the Braves see Bethancourt(sp) as their “next in line” not Evan (at catcher).
BTW…why does Fredo continue to put Prado 2nd and Chipper 6th? Who has the higher OBP??? Isn’t the job to put the guys who get on base the MOST near the top of the lineup? I believe Chipper is better suited to hit 2nd at this point in his career.

for me, too early to say right now. Question isn’t defensive in my mind, its the offense that will decide for me. Simmons is ++ on defense and arm strength, Wilson is – for me – solid but not spectacular defensively with an average arm. Thoughts?

Wilson can play 3 infield positions. Not sure if Simmons has played anywhere other than SS. That would be the only advantage of Wilson over Simmons if that decision is to be made. But Braves got Francisco/Prado to back up 3B and Prado at 2B so it could happen.
That is all for me. Bye.

With McCanns terrible stats against Dempster why is he batting 4th. He kills us in that spot. Too many double
play grounders to kill potential big innings. Batting 8th he can’t clog the bases if he gets on. Then
serves as cleanup hitter #2. I would not sign him to a long term contract. With his size and advancing
age it would be a killer contract. Go with Ross and bring along Bettancourt. A lot cheaper and a lot
better defense. Also can Durbin now.

Beyond Braves land,
The Orioles and Rays are tied atop the A.L. East, while the Yankees and Red Sox are wallowing at the bottom of their division.
Then over in the A.L. Central we have the Cleveland Indians leading the charge. In our own NL East…the Nationals (yep, I knew they would win, but 1st?). Over in the NL West, those lowly Dodgers are in first. So what in the blue hazes is going on here? Have the Baseball Gods lost their freaking minds!!!!!

DOB – great-ass column. I understand the cynics, heck, everyone is here and there, but I am hoping that Mr. Gattis makes good. He inspires us the way many cultural and literary figures do. I do like hearing the updates on this guy, and am amazed at how he’s done. Couple of weeks ago I read somewhere to forget about him – he was, according to this writer, a ST footnote, an interesting story, but nothing more. Man, those numbers are wicked – and, as you well-noted, the missing four years didn’t take their toll on his body. Thanks for a great write.

What really makes me sick is that we could’ve had Chris Paul or Deron Williams, but wound up with Marvin and Sheldon. Sad thing is Sheldon’s wife is a better player than both of them combined.
You won’t get a superstar everytime you get a high draft pick, what frustrates me the most is that Marvin hasn’t seem to put the time or work in to improve his game. I question his motivation. Some people have talent and waste it, some just do enough to get by, and others work hard to get better. Marvin is one of the first two. Just doesn’t seem as if he puts in the proper effort. He’s shown flashes of what he could have been and then nothing for the majority of the time.
I hate that we missed out on better talent as well but mostly I just hate that we drafted a player that lacks the motivation for whatever reason.

It is if your range includes areas you cannot throw the runner out. Lots of players can get to balls All Star SS’s can, they just can’t make the throw to get the runner out. Pastornicky falls into that category.
I’d not getting thoroughly understood here. Pastornicky is the best choice now, but you’d better believe Frank Wren is looking and listening.

if you can’t name anything other then the supposed pickup, your argument that he makes “a ton” of mental errors is as good as dead
1. It’s pickoff
2. errors at the plate (swinging at pitches off the plate…early in the count…when the pitcher has walked two in a row).
3. Not getting in front of pitches that bounce (most people are just saying he’s fat and an idiot…I’m trying to see something a tad more logical)
4. I have to think some of the struggling from our starting pitching MIGHT have something to do with the staff and McCann not being on the same page. (i.e. it’s not always Hanson’s fault for throwing 5 straight curveballs. Perhaps Mac called for all five? McCann even stated that some of the errors were his.)

With Chipper and Lowes money coming off the books next season $24 million dollars. We could actually have a real chance to sign Josh Hamilton if he becomes a free agent. I think if we do make that deal Liberty Media will trade McCann and/or Prado to open up extra cash. And will probably not make a tender offer to Jurrjens to make enough room for other moves. I know there is risk but he is the best overall player in the game along with Matt Kemp. I know that he will be expensive at least 25 million a season for 6 years. But you have a gold glove defense a guy that can steal 25 a season, and hit 40-50 a season and he hits for average. I know its a “Pie in the Sky” at the moment but we will have 24 million off the books and will probably have close to 30 million off the books if we nontender Jurrjens. And more than that oif McCann or Prado gets traded. So I think we resign Bourn and then we still have a lot money available.

I really dont know if Mac should warrant an extension like Molina from the Cardnials got. Since the All-Star game last year he has not hit over .200. He no longer tries to hit for average like he did 2 years ago and tries to hit it out of the ballpark every time making him susceptible to double playsand he still never makes adjustments to that shift teams always put on him. Also his defense has regressed alot, and he has 1 of the worst throwing out baserunner percentages in the majors. And is a big guy and that extra weight will affect his knees being a catcher and he cant move to 1st base.

Does not match my theory. I think Braun has an itchy penis.
He was probably on a steroid like prednesone or something (which they gave me for an eczema condition). They load you up – I had to take 8 pills the first day, then 7, then, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
He should have gotten permission, but was “embarrassed.”
So, yes, he failed the drug test, maybe even posted crazy levels, but I don’t think it was HGH or a performance enhancing steroid. I think it was herpes medicine.
He always maintained his innocence, said he would tell the whole story, but when he got off on a technicality, he was like, pfft, that skeleton stays in the closet.
Just my theory…

Love early to mid-period Wilco but that song, I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, has some of the worst words in the history of lyricism.
By the way, I hear Uggla got the clutch game winning hit but once again, I wasn’t there to see it so it didn’t happen.
As far as I’m concerned the go ahead runs scored on wild pitches.
From now on with regards to Matty and Uggla, if I don’t see them do something live with my own two eyes I’m just going to have to assume that all of their highlights were edited to include special effects.
They’ve got Bud Selig by the balls. It’s a conspiracy I tell you.
I’m kidding. Ha ha. Silly me.
About time we scored some runs for Randall but I guess he doesn’t get the win.
I never really understood why people were so against him. He’s still young.
He gave up four runs to the Pirates and it was as if he ran over an old lady with a walker.
Didn’t think we’d win tonight, that’s why I was so annoyed after the 5-1 loss.
Glad Randall stepped up again and gave the offense a chance to get a win.
Let’s finish it off tomorrow and take it to St. Louis.

Yeah, and they’re finally all playing the way they’re supposed to play (not to mention some of the older more expensive players), the way they should have played last year.
They’re all generally too good not to perform the way they have at the start of this season for the rest of the season.

But his explanation is, “I’ve just been dealt a bad card”, his attitude is, “I’m going to try and stay around long enough to beat it”, and he’s “thankful my wife or kids didn’t get it”. He’s an inspiration to us all.

While I would like Hamilton for the Braves, I don’t see it happening. The Braves won’t outbid someone like the Mets/ Yanks, nor would they likely give Hamilton the # of years he’ll want. Also, with 1 10mil+ guy on the roster for a mid market team like the Braves, it would be irresponsible to commit 15-20 mil/yr on one player.

Gotta love what’s going on in Philadelphia these days. Phils gag again yesterday when leading, Flyers going down and Sixers bowing. Even better watching those fans leave CBP early and seeing empty seats. STILL, after 3 years of counting these guys out won’t write them off it. 5 games back and would love to see that continue to increase. Howard and Utley will help but time might just be running out this season on this ballclub.

Look at these gaudy projected stats for the season…
Runs: Freeman 115, Uggla 110, Bourn 110, Heyward 94, Prado 94, Chipper 73
RBI: Freeman 136, Chipper 110, Uggla 99, McCann 89, Prado 84
HR: Freeman 31, Chipper 26, McCann 26, Uggla 21, Heyward 21
Love it, love it, love it. Not an easy out in this entire lineup. Now if only Hanson could get back that extra 3 mph on his fastball, Minor could quit leaving balls up in the zone and Hudson could round into his usual solid form, then I can see this squad winning 100+ games easily.

I honestly can’t remember the last time our Braves traded any starting pitcher during the season. That said, with the emergence of Randall Delgado along with the question of Jair Jurrjens, one has to wonder if the Braves would consider moving JJ’s five million salary before the off season.

On a this is so sad note. Two 30ish guys on CNBC this morning discussing Europe and their problems and ultimately ours. One guy says, people used to live to 50 now they live to 65, the other guy says, no people used to die at 65,when they retired, now they live to 85. What??!!!
This is “the business channel”. Life expectancy at birth is one thing and of course it increases as one ages. I’m not even going to look it up but I think people that lived to 65 around 1935 lived on average another 13/14 years, today about 4/5 more. Of course people retire a couple of years later today.

If JJ makes it back to the major leagues and performs very well, then he becomes a possible trade piece. But then, why would the Braves trade a starting pitcher who is performing well, if they are trying to win this year?

Great game last night. I was sorry to see Delgado cough up the lead. He pitched really well. The only major concern is McCann. He’s got to start attacking that shift. Can’t somebody teach him how to bunt down the third base line. Yes, I know he occasionally hits a home run, but that shift is killing him. Is he too stubborn to bunt? It’s doubtful to me that a. we could even work an equitable deal for Dempster or that he could be considered – in any stretch of the imagination – as the missing link to the Braves’ late season success.

The fact that management didin’t make any changes in the off season tells you they thought highly of this team and it was playoff contender. I fully expected them to be good(maybe not the start they have had). Did you really think Prado and Heyward would not be more productive? I’m sure Wren surely did hence not making changes.
Could they make a equitable deal? Not sure. I do agree that how Hanson performs is the key whether they do or not. I am not giving up on him but….. Penciling him in as your starter for a game 3 doesn’t make me overconfident by any means.
I just always like Dempster. Has pitched in playoff games before(game 1 in 2008 although not a great game for him) . I also like the makeup of the Cardinals a lot. IMO they will be the team to beat and another big arm makes that matchup much more viable.

Now why would he steadfastly refuse to trade young pitching? Could it be to avoid having to pay for more expensive veteran pitching?
I’m telling you that the only way he signs veteran pitching is getting someone else like Durbin that will do little except to fuel the blog fires.
They still have Medlen or Martinez who could start. They still have Teheran in the minors and the only way Jurrjens is valuable is IF he’s pitching well. If he is, he’ll be back in Atlanta and not in Chicago or any other MLB city.

Only a couple big differences… The Braves seem to have heart unlike the Hawks most nights. The Hawks have a terrible leader the Braves have a HOF leader!!

Hanson and JJ are both interesting cases. Will they recover from injuries, and learn to pitch effectively, post those injuries? Time will tell. Best case is that they both are effective enough to have value, either to us, or as trade pieces to improve our team.

Yikes!
Great game yesterday from Delgado. That’s two decent starts in a row for him… love it.
I’m a little worried about BMac, but he is hitting the ball hard when he hits it. His brother needs to pay him a visit and get him back on track. Worked out ok last season. I just keep reminding myself that BMac is one hot-streak away from getting his average back up to .290, and we all know he’s going to get on a streak sooner or later.

I like Josh even though he makes bone head mistakes. Teague Smith and Horford are a good group of players the problem is the guy paid to be the best player on the team goes missing at the beginning of May every year. I really wish there was a way to get rid of Joe and Marvin… To bad it’ll probably be Josh Smith that gets traded this off season!! Doesn’t matter who they replace him with were still stuck with Joe and he’s just good enough to get you to the playoffs and then hide in the corner once he gets there

Yes this is true… The Hawks have a solid coach IMO and a half decent GM… The main problem over there is players don’t want to play for a team that has a shaky ownership. Which causes them to overpay players to get them here (Joe Johnson). The Hawks will never be a solid NBA franchise until they get a good owner!!

TERDO needs to take a step back. The reason it isn’t being done is 3rd rounder JOE LEONARD [.254 BA - 118 AB] I think.
LEONARD’s in MISSISSIPPI, and they project him to ATLANTA in a couple years. As a third round selection he’s prolly more highly thought of than JOEY who came in the sixth. Can’t embarress the scouts by having a lower-rounder beat out the highest rated guy.
And his LYNCHBURG slot’s at third and first are already filled by ED SALCEDO [.263 BA] and CHRIS GARCIA [.344 BA].
He’s got no fall-back position it appears to me. He lives or dies at GWINNETT unless there’s an injury lower down the org.
BTW ROBBY’s down to .227 and falling like a stone.

And the comparison to Freema/Heyward is not all that accurate. As soon as Simmons is deemed ready, we’ll never see The Rev as a starting Brave ever again, so it’s how he does NOW and NOT what he might develop into that concerns his playing time.

@raleigh I know Bobby managed in ‘09. I wasn’t blaming this on Fredi, just questioning why it should be done/ many bloggers agree with it. In ‘09 Schafer struggled yet still started basically every day until he was sent down. He hit .204. Rev is hitting .265, almost .300 in last 10 games or so. Heyward in 2010 did well, and I don’t remember him sitting every 5 or so days. Same with Freeman. So I’m just questioning why must the REV be sat every 5 days or so when he is doing better than Schafer and hitting for average like Heyward/Freeman. He’s doing a good job in the 8 spot, I don’t understand throwing Hack Wilson in every 5 days.

And the reason Alex was not resigned is because the team didn’t want to block either Pastornicky or Simmons by signing him for the 2 years he was looking for. They did (if I remember correctly) offer him a one year deal that he turned down (understandably, since the Brewers offered him 2)

Both are defensive standouts. I think Simmons is bumped up to Gwinnett sooner rather than later. Bethancourt is off to a slower start offensively, so I’m thinking if he goes to Gwinnett, it’s toward the end of the season.
Interesting, though. If Simmons makes it to Gwinnett earlier than later and does well, surely he’s got to be considered as contending with Pastornicky for shortstop in ‘13 (provided Pastornicky continues to play capably offensively and defensively).
Got to believe Simmons is management’s favorite for shortstop. Would the Braves’ consider moving Pastornicky elsewhere in the field? Could he play center, presuming Bourn is gone? Does Pastornicky move into a super-utility role? Or would the Braves just try to trade him?
Longer range stuff, but interesting.

I watched her once. Very stilted, not communicative. She’s either dating somebody, is related to somebody, or has pictures, because she most assuredly is brutal in front of a camera.
Admittedly, it’s not as if she has great content to work from (the whole concept is a shameless, reaching pander to social media, with no actual redeeming value to a baseball-centric program), but she’s a really, really bad broadcaster. The mixture of the two things makes for a foul brew.

heres what needs to happen…put Gattis in left next season, move Prado to 3rd and send francisco somewhere…he’s been good as a fill in when needed but its pretty clear he doesnt have the defense to be an every game starter for us when chipper’s gone…
