Heck if Moyer can still pitch Glavine could as well. IMO I bet Smoltz can still throw 93. And Madux never needed speed on his pitches………….Maybe we need to call somebody back if our starters besides Beachy cant pitch.

Interesting behind the scenes stuff you usually don’t here or see… Chipper really came out on top here and even got a parting shot into Moyer from the Phils end… I love it… I don’t know that I wouldn’t be trying to steal signs but it is probably a waste of time and just puts more pressure on you to try and jack out the next pitch…

and today it’s a BEACHY-BEAUTY at Coors, a one-hitter for six innings so far.

longtimefan, I agree with Jason’s fielding, not a lot of chance to show his arm so far this year but we all know about his throwing arm.

Stealing signs is like kissing your sister… You have an idea what it’s all about but in the end it had just as well have been your brother! The Braves are killing the ball this year thanks to the new hitting coaches and Moyer just got his “lunch ate” yesterday and has no excuses. I really, really lost a lot of respect for him and he got served by Tulo, his own team mate! What a double whammy of a day!

Kevin

According to the players quoted, most MLB teams steal signs. If that’s true, HOW CAN ANYONE POSSIBLY GET MAD ABOUT IT? If you suspect it, as claytondawg said, change your signs.

Or, just say, “Here it is. See if you can hit it.” I believe Maddux could’ve told hitters what he was about to throw them and still been pretty effective.

Moyer’s reaction is pretty ‘bush league’ IMO. As Chipper points out, I’m not convinced that there’s an advantage in having a second opinion on a guess… which is what it is, another guess. It’s almost impossible to be 100% sure that what the runner on second base sees is the pitch that’s actually coming. Hitters that guess at pitches don’t usually do well for long in MLB.

IMO, this situation further proves how the Atlanta Braves do things the right way and do it with class!

GO BRAVES!

Moyer really needs to take his geritol and shut up. To hear that his own shortstop doesn’t have his back on this issue says plenty. But, as someone on here previously posted, Moyer never made this a public issue, he took issue on the field. Chipper made it public when reporters questioned him about it. Thing is, I don’t think Chipper wouldn’t have made it public if he wasn’t asked about it. Just comes to show how much class Chipper and the Braves have. I would be pissed as well if my integrity was put into question over something as frivilous as this…and it wasn’t true. I don’t think I would’ve have mentioned Blauser or Lemke in reference to the issue, just my opinion.

I don’t know…Chipper seemed a little too defensive about it. He doth protest a lot. But, not sure what the big deal is really- always thought it was standard procedure to steal signs if you could.

Bob the Blogger

I really don’t see anything wrong with stealing signs. That’s why they’re complicated. I thought it was part of the game. Players and coaches study pitchers to see if they are telegraphing pitches, then relay the info to other players. I think I would have just smiled at Moyer and let him think the hitter knew exactly was was coming next. If he’s paranoid anyway, that would really work on him.

Wow, Moyer really struck a chord with Chip. I can’t believe he told McCann “that’s how people get hurt”!!! Seriously, WTH?!?! That sounds like a threat to me. I am not a player, but stealing signs isn’t cheating to me, so not sure why Chipper would be so incensed by that. I DO understand him being upset about what Moyer said to McCann, but sign stealing is part of the game.

Although, I got to admit, it is funny to imagine 49 year-old Moyer throwing at 40 year-old balky knee Chipper with a 78 MPH fastball and the ensuing charging of the mound.

@Chopdawg 9:52 pm-He clearly meant using steroids. I guess Chipper thinks accusing somebody of stealing signs is similar to that?
Also, I can’t believe Tulo had Chipper’s back. I have no doubt that Chipper’s right in the dispute, but Tulo should have either stuck up for his teammate or said no comment. Maybe that shows that Moyer has problems in the clubhouse or something, but it can’t be good, whatever it shows.

I play old-man baseball in a league, most of the players are 28-48 years olds. Everyone except for our 69 year old lefty pitcher. Ex-minor leaguer who has never lifted a single weight, never run a single mile. Anyway, he’s striking out guys half his age with location, movement and changing speeds. Reminds me of Moyer, so while I have never liked Moyer, I do respect the man for what he’s been able to accomplish at his age.

Its, let him bring that 78 mph #$#$#$ to Atlanta in September when we play these guys again and let’s light his senile backside up for five or six more 900 foot bombs. As usual, I’m not going to go with the lemmings I don’t know if Jones did anything or not. Neither does anyone else except Jones and he, of course, is denying it. However, Jones statements indicate to me that, although his body has matured and aged from when he was a teenager, his mind has not.

If you want to check out Moyer and jones as role models for youngsters and their respective contributions to their communities, Jones runs a very distant second to Moyer.

Now, some of you lemmings can post your irate, though prejudiced and uninformed, replies. It won’t change the truth.

He was just trying to get in Chipper’s head. There was an article in the rag paper Seattle Weekly last week and it mentions how he will try to do these things from time to time. Bottom line, he couldn’t throw a baseball through tissue paper so he must protect the location of those weak pitches(though in this instance), I suspect that it was more a measure of respect to try and get the best of Chipper some otherway. Plus is there really a rule in the book about stealing signs etc., or is that just a baseball genbtlemans agreement that you won’t do it? Enough has been said about it, Chipper should go on and have a great year and forget about it until the Braves put the Rockies out in the playoffs in Oct.
