Braves postgame quotes after Monday loss to Pirates

MICHAEL BOURN

On disagreement with 2B umpire Danley:

“It was just a little conversation, get on the same page. That’s it. I wasn’t cussing at him or anything like that. I wasn’t using any foul language. I know when I’m safe and when I’m out. If I’m out, I’m not going to make an argument about it, I’ll take it. I’m out, simple as that. But three of the calls this year, I’ve been safe. I just want it to be right. I’m not fussing with him. I’m not trying to make a statement to him. I know they’re not perfect. It’s the human eye and sometimes they’re going to make mistakes. Some time they may call me safe when I’m out. I hope I get that call some time too. it’s just your competitive nature. You think you’re safe. You’re going to argue your point.”

On if it’s getting frustrating w/missed calls:

“It is but you’ve got to keep going. Hope they will be in a position where they can see it. I can’t really do too much about it. Go on to the next day.”

On McDonald:

“I always knew he had good stuff, but today he was able to control it. He was getting ahead with his fastball, he was throwing his curveball for strikes and for balls, so it’s hard to differentiate which one is one. He was on tonight, give him credit. He threw the ball well for seven, eight innings. He kept them in the game and their offense came alive. They hit the ball well tonight. There are going to be games like this sometimes. You have to put them behind you. We split the series 2-2 now we come in with our division rivals tomorrow. That’s overwith. We move on to the next day.”

On not having their best series, but still a split:

“They’re not a bad team, I’m telling you. Any team that can pitch, they’re always going to be in the game. And they have one of the better pitching staffs in the National League to me. They came out there every day with somebody who was able to pitch. But we have a good hitting team as well, so it’s always going to be a battle. That series is over with, though. We’re done with that. After the game is over with, reflect on it a little bit, peace out. We’ll see them next time, go on to the Phillies.”

MIKE MINOR

On if he felt like it was a night, despite line, he didn’t get beat around:

“I feel like I did. They showed if I don’t make good pitches what happens to them. And tonight I really didn’t have any command of any pitches. I had a lot of strikeouts but I don’t really have an explanation of why. Just really inconsistent.”

On if home run pitches hurt the most:

“Yeah but it’s the walks too. They add up. It’s just how baseball works. If you walk the leadoff guy, they deserve to score right there because it’s a lack of focus or just one of those days where I don’t have my stuff.”

On not being able to turn it around:

“Yeah, they were taking good hacks off me the whole night. You could tell they were pretty locked in and I left a lot of balls over the plate. So they hit a lot of balls hard.”

On where he was trying to go on pitch to Alvarez:

“Away and it was down the middle. That’s what good hitters do, and I know how good he is because I went to college with him. I know he can do that….I know how good he can be, even if his numbers don’t show it right now.”

FREDI GONZALEZ

On Minor missing his spots:

“Yeah I think his command got a little bit erratic there and for me he couldn’t get any of his stuff over the plate and he had to come back over the plate and they capitalized on that. But he’s been so good, he’s allowed to have one of these outings. I thought we had McDonald on the ropes a couple times and then he started throwing that curveball over for a strike and got us off-balance a little bit. We hit some balls hard, even until the end there. I thought Bourn’s ball had a chance to hit off the wall and they caught it. Series over, 2-2, you would have liked to have won the series. Now we go on to the Phillies.”

On Hinske’s four hits off the bench:

“That’s good. That’s going to carry him later on in the week, later on in the month, when he’s going to have to face a tough reliever late in the game and he’s got four at-bats under his belt. That’s a great night, first four-hit game since 0-4. Made a great running play in right field. He did his part.”

On Bourn’s dispute:

“It’s funny because they weren’t arguing. They were talking back and forth. Both Bourny and Kerwin were saying ‘We’re not arguing here. Nobody is going to get thrown out of the game. We’re talking back and forth.’ I’m going OK. I’ve never seen that before. As good as these umpires are, it’s a tough play. That bang-bang play at first base, they get that 99 out of 100, but the one at second base, it seems like around the league that’s a tough play for them, the catch and tag. I haven’t seen the replay but I thought Bourny beat it.”

On if felt like Minor was still competing late:

“Yeah, that’s why we ran him out there in the seventh. He was three runs down in the seventh, really made only one bad pitch for me was the home run to Alvarez. But other than that he pitched well. Run him out there, stretch him out, get him through that ump. That seventh inning got out of hand. If we get out there, we’ve got a chance, but we just couldn’t get out of that inning, three runs down.”

On Heyward’s prognosis:

“We’ll see tomorrow. He was able later in the game, if it was close, he’d be able to play defense. But obviously playing defense is a little different than swinging the bat and playing nine innings. Right now I’ll probably give him tomorrow off. If it’s getting better with just a little time and therapy, I think one more day will be that much better.”

I sure wish they would release Durbin and hernandez. There’s no good time to have either of those ass clowns in the game.

Thx for the quotes CR…Really enjoyed Bourn’s quotes. If you think about it, Bourn’s comment on McDonald could be classified under the notorious “tip your cap”-comments. Let’s see how many here notice it. *grins*

Eddings and Danley should NOT be on the same umpiring crew. Need to spread those p**s poor umps out more, not have more than one bad ump on a crew of four. And those two are in the bottom five in baseball. Along with Bob Davidson, Angel Hernandez and one whose face I can see, but name I can’t remember.

Why can’t umps be like other employees? Rate them all and the ones that have poor ratings year after year after year be excessed? Eddings already blew a crucial call in a WS [one that the Angels were in I think], plus he has a horrible attitude. Tries to push player’s buttons so that he can toss them. Remember when he got into it with Johnny Estrada a few years ago? Said something to Estrada that made Johnny go ballistic, then tossed him for it. They don’t let players do that sort of stuff, why let umps do it?

I agree with Durbin and releasing him, but I must admin Hernandez has been pretty good over all and having a work horse to give innings is a good plan. NOT having that position last year burnt out the other guys early and contributed heavily to the September issues.

Chris…you must be a closet Giants fan or an A’s freak. Trade Mac aye?
Hey, put the pipe down and lay off the oxy for the rest of your life since you are delusional!
How about trading us Cain and Posey for Mac and Hanson?

Once Mac signs an extension…his contract will cancel out Cains. Otherwise, watch Mac rake in May and June to a stat line like…330/.370/.915…he’s just loosening up…dude’s a freak with a bat in his hands!

“Once Mac signs an extension”

McCann won’t sign an extension. Liberty Media won’t be selling anytime soon and will still be the owner at the end of 2013 when Mac’s contract is up……they aren’t going to pony up the likely $20 mil a year he will command on the FA market and have Mac (who will be 30 when said contract starts and be around 35+ when it ends) chew up anywhere from 20 to as much as 25% of the total team payroll. Not to mention there are probably going to be atleast 3 AL teams drooling for his services who can pay him that kind of money to not only be a catcher but to prolong his career a few more years by using him as a DH too to take some of the wear and tear off his body from being behind the plate.

Doug Eddings or what ever his name is is an awful Umpire he got that pulled swing wrong and Tim Hudson was nearly thrown out because of this hot head. He has has an Agenda against the Braves for years. But we need to move on and just take 2 out of three from the Phillies. We have lost 7 straight games against the Phillies and havent won since my Birthday on July 9th of 2011. I think we need to beat them in the process of moving on from last year. We should not take them fr granted. They are awfu l on offense but will throw out Halliday, and Cole Hamels in this upcoming series. So we need to draw out ABs and make the pitchers work.

Bourn is right, that’s at least 4 plays I’ve seen him called out on when he was safe, three of them on straight steals. I don’t know what the deal is but I’ll say one thing, he is on the ball at the plate right now.

Major league baseball umpiring is a game of family and connections and not necessarily ability. Then you add in the EEO part and it really gets convoluted. Most umpires give up in the minors because they are paid less than the players and then only for three months. The league takes one or two new guys every year and there are 200 guys trying to move up. The union is so strong and unrelenting that if Eric Greg had not quit when those umps overplayed their hand several years ago we would still be watching that fat lump of navel cheese waddling around getting almost every close call wrong.

Bourne’s discussion with the ump was very original. I can understand the umps’ dislike for the Braves. They used to openly “work” an umpire, and it appeared to me that the purpose came before the issue. Freddie is working hard to combat that now by *never* arguing. We’ll see how it works out in the long run. There must be a big burden associated with being an umpire that goes beyond just calling the game. They seem to be a little nervy.

Chad “Linebrink” Durbin… this WASHED UP BUM CANNOT get anyone OUT yet Ricky Ricardo Jr. (Fredi) keeps bringing this STIFF into games.

Was is NOT enough for the Brave’s fans to ENDURE watching Scott Linebrink and Scott Proctor last year!!!?????

Chad “Kawakami” Durbin should change his first name to SCOTT.

I suppose (just like last year) we will have to wait until July when Durbin’s ERA has reached 98.00 before this BUM gets released.

It’s OBVIOUS to the fans that Durbin is DONE; however, Frank Wren (firefrankwren.com) looks at Durbin as “AFFORDABLE.”

Fredi : “Yeah,Hinske did his job-his part tonight.” That means Bourn,Prado,Chipper,McCann,Minor,Durbin didn’t. That’s how you lose 9-3. Pastornicky,Freeman, and Hinske came to play. Others didn’t.

I know that you Braves fans are unhappy with how I pitched last night. But I choose to look at the bright side of things. The Pittsburgh fans loved me last night; plus, I helped increase the Pirates’ team batting average and runs scored.

In the future try to be more positive Braves fans. Afterall, someone has to carry on the tradition set by Braves pitchers like Kolb, Barker, Reitsma, Boyer, Linebrink, K.K., and Proctor.

Well, we are into the month of May after a fairly positive April with the Braves. I believe that by the end of the month we will have a good idea as to whether this Braves team can compete for it all come October. We have the Phillies coming up, six games with the Cardinals, and series with the Marlins, Nationals, and Rays. A winning month of May would sure be nice.
