(Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien today.)
The last day of the first month of the season is here. Is it me or is the baseball season actually flying by already? And how much faster has it gone since the Braves recovered from the 0-4 start? Since the three losses in New York and one in Houston, your Braves have won 14 of 18 to move into a first-place tie in the NL East with the Washington Nationals.

Stephen Strasburg and the Nats rotation off to hot start
The Dodgers swept the Nats this weekend, so it’s Washington dealing with a four-game losing streak now, even with the arrival of one Bryce Harper.
A win tonight for the Braves against the Pirates to close out the four-game series and the Braves could find themselves alone atop the NL East (The Nats are off tonight). The last time the Braves led the division, tied or otherwise, was April 1 of last season, after they beat the Nationals in the season-opener in DC and then had an off day to follow.
The Dodgers and Rangers are up in the stratosphere at 16-6, and then it’s the Braves, Nats, Cardinals, Orioles and Rays all at 14-8.
The Phillies are coming in town tomorrow for the first of a three-game series, and who would have thought it wouldn’t be as big a deal as if it were the Nats?
Hey, the Braves are the one team that knows full well how good the Nationals can be. Everybody else is just catching up now. OK, fine, it’s pretty clear the Nationals are taking it to new heights this year. For all those years of us saying the Nats were “Braves light,” taking so many former players, and trying to build in the same model as the Braves with Stan Kasten as president.
Even without Kasten anymore, but former Braves executive Roy Clark is still there running the scouting department, I’d say they’re doing a good impression of the middle 90s Braves right about now.
As a staff, the Nationals lead the NL in ERA (2.33), quality starts (17), WHIP (1.07), and batting average against (.203). They have three starters in the top 10 in ERA in the National League with Stephen Strasburg (1.13), Jordan Zimmermann (1.33), and Ross Detwiler (1.64). And newcomer Gio Gonzalez, No. 13 in the NL with a 1.82 ERA, gives them four starters with ERAs under 2.00. Yow.
So the Nats have played 22 games and 17 of them have been quality starts. By comparison, the Braves have played 17 games and gotten eight quality starts. Of course the Braves are scoring a lot more runs (113 to 74).
But that’s enough about the Nats. Dan Uggla said something on Friday night, after the Braves’ 6-1 win to start the Pirates series, that I thought was interesting:
“Everybody knows how important these games are (come) September. To take away as many games as we can from other teams and win the ones we’re supposed to – it’s going to pay its dividends in September.”
So that tells me the Braves are using last September’s collapse now in a constructive way, reminding themselves, as Bobby Cox used to say, the games in April count as much as the games in September, or something along those lines. No doubt, the Braves would feel a lot better about going 3-1 in an April series against the Pirates than settling for a 2-2 split, and they turn to Mike Minor vs. James McDonald to do something about that tonight.
The Braves have won Minor’s past three starts, while he has gone 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA, allowing only four earned runs in 21 1/3 innings. McDonald has been pitching well for the Pirates but only been given the benefit of two runs in 22 2/3 innings he’s pitched over four starts. In his last start on Wednesday, McDonald took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning against the Rockies, before giving up an infield hit to Troy Tulowitzi and a manufactured run in an eventual 2-1 loss.
Medlen, long relief paying off
For those still upset over seeing Kris Medlen in the bullpen, I crunched a few numbers this morning to see the impact not only Medlen but the other good long relief the Braves have gotten from Livan Hernandez, Cristhian Martinez and yes Chad Durbin too (six straight scoreless appearances), have had on Eric O’Flaherty, Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel.

Yes this Medlen kid is flexible
I went back and compared games through last April 29 with games through this April 29 and here’s what I’ve found: This year, O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrel have pitched in 26 games combined and totaled 25 innings. This time last year they had already pitched in 37 games combined (yes you’re including one game for each, even if they appeared in the same game), and 37 2/3 innings. So they have been spared 12 2/3 innings of mileage so far this year.
Also, I counted up and found that this year O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrel have pitched 23 times in games in which they came in either tied or with a lead. Only twice have they come in this year while trailing. Last year? O’Flaherty, Venters and Kimbrel came in 26 times while leading or tied, but also 11 times when trailing.
So a combination of the Braves’ scoring more runs and having more reliable options in middle relief is saving those arms.
Venters had pitched in 13 games and 13 2/3 innings this time last season. He’s pitched nine games and only 8 2/3 innings at the same point this year. In fact, he told me he’s actually worked a few times on the side to stay sharp – just 10-15 pitches – something he rarely if ever did last season.
“It definitely takes a lot of stress off me and Craig and O,” Venters said. “It’s really awesome to have guys like that, to be able to trust everybody in any situation….
“The guys we have down there have been awesome. They’ve done everything that everybody thought they would do. Kris is ridiculous. He’s going to go out there and compete and go right at hitters and throw a lot of strikes and get hits apparently.”
Oh, Medlen will love that.
Tidbits
Probables for the Phillies series: Brandon Beachy (2-1, 1.05 ERA) vs. LH Cole Hamels (3-2, 2.73) on Tuesday; Tommy Hanson (3-2, 3.00) vs. Roy Halladay (3-2, 1.95) on Wednesday; Randall Delgado (2-2, 6.30) vs. Joe Blanton (2-3, 3.81) on Thursday.
Michael Bourn has moved up into the top five in the NL batting average leaders. He’s at .344 after three straight multi-hit games against the Pirates, 7-for-13 (.538) with a walk.
Derek Lowe just pitched 7 2/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball for the Indians yesterday against the Angels to move to 4-1 for the year, with a 2.27 ERA. He’s tied for the AL lead in wins with James Shields and David Price of Tampa Bay and Robbie Ross of Texas.
More from the ballpark this afternoon.

Lowe had a good April last year, too… finished the month with a 3.21 ERA.
He’ll soon return to form… I’d guess he finishes May with an ERA around 4.50.

gives [the Nats] four starters with ERAs under 2.00. Yow.
…and therein lies the problem, I think. They are bound to come back to earth, even if it’s just the tiniest little bit, and then their offense becomes a fairly large problem. They are coming out on the right side of low-scoring one-run games right now, but an extra run on the starters’ ERA is liable to make such outcomes problematic. That would still their make rotation fan-freakin-tastic, but somewhat less so for their W-L record.
That team is going to have hit much better, and I’m not sure they have the players to do so.

Morse had a .900 OPS last year, and I got real American dollars that says no chance he even sniffs that in 2012. Zimmerman had an off year by his standards, but still had an ops around .800. And they were 12th in runs scored.
You might be right, in the end, but I still see the offensive side as a problem, until proven otherwise.

There is something special about this team. I did not feel the same last season because I figured we would have to have a ton of good luck and planetary alignment to get us to the big show. This season, with the few key additions and subtractions we made (Bye bye D Lowe-we won’t miss you, and as for you Gonzo, even my daughter last season (she is 10) hated when you came to the plate especially with RISP-because she and I both knew “out”) this season is different. Especially Chipper. He is leading this team and even though Kemp is a lock for the MVP, Chipper this year is the Braves MVP. He has injected something special-call it energy, call it confidence. But I have not had this much confidence since the ‘96 season. I have not felt this excited about the Braves since the ‘91 and ‘92 seasons-it is like we have the energy back. Remember how Buckhead sports bars were over crowded and Atlantans hanging on every Avery or Glavin or Maddux or Smoltzy pitch? What is different about this team vs. the ‘91 team is Chipper. We get to watch his story book farewell season. This will be a year to remember. How awesome will it be if Chipper is the WS MVP…

That’s a run differential of about 40, give or take; maybe a few more, if they continue to be a low-scoring team. Now, I find it totally within reason that the pitching staff could be sub-600, given some decent luck, so 85 isn’t out of the realm of possibility, I guess.

Wouldn’t think they’re giving up on Werth and you’re right Laroche is hitting the ball right now (though we know how streaky he can be). My guess is Harper or Werth moves to center with Ankiel being the odd man out but if neither of those guys is equipped for CF maybe they platoon Harper. Either way I think Morse has a job somewhere.

@Phil… LOL! That’s funny right there! Personally, I don’t care to hear anything out of Olbermann’s mouth and didn’t feel much different when he was at ESPN back in 1953. He exudes arrogance, and I don’t care for arrogance.
Whatever the Nats hitters and pitchers do against everybody else is pretty irrelevant, IMO. The fact is, they give the Braves fits, and did so when they were at the bottom of the heap. Every team has that opposing team that just takes them to the woodshed, and for the Braves it’s the Nats… Marlins used to be the same way it seems.
I’m certainly not saying that the Nats aren’t for real… I think they are… but the weekend in LA says a lot for how they can expect top tier teams to match up with them. But all those games were close and at least 2 of them could have gone either way… easily! I recorded and watched all of them and both teams look like serious foes… and as has been pointed out, the Nats have several key pieces missing.
It’s gonna be interesting, but I’ll stick with Harold Reynolds and his prediction… “it’s gonna be Atlanta!”

kevkat, we are still getting jeff francouer updates. i think we’ll probably continue to hear about lowe at least until retirement.
Speaking of Jeff Francoeur…
Freddie Freeman is OBPing .304, worst among the eight regulars, worse than Pastornicky.
He has 5 walks and 25 strikeouts in 92 PA. Matt Diaz has 4 walks in 25 PA.
Luckily he’s slugging .464.
He has swung at 61.1 percent of pitches, highest on the team among non-pitchers.
Only Juan Francisco has a higher percentage of pitches that are swinging strikes. Freeman and Uggla are tied for second among non-pitchers. But Freeman’s walk rate is the second-worst while Uggla’s is the best among the eight regulars and third among the non-pitchers. Only Francisco has a lower walk rate than Freeman, among non-pitchers.

Freddie could benefit hitting lower without as much pressure on him, Heyward would benefit getting some pitches to hit with Uggla or BMac hitting behind him… seems like a smart move given both of their current situations.

by the way, the mets in 2nd place at this point surprises me more than the nats tied for 1st or the marlins in last. the mets are hanging tough. everyone thought they were the worst team in a good division, which still probably made them good enough to be middle of the pack in the NL.

Jorge Cantu Elects Free Agency
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [April 30 at 1:42pm CST]
Infielder Jorge Cantu has opted out of his minor league deal with the Angels and elected free agency, MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez reports (Twitter link). The Wasserman Media Group client is now free to sign with any team.
The Angels, who signed Cantu to a minor league deal in January, assigned him to Triple-A, where he has a .291/.300/.488 line with four homers in 90 plate appearances. Cantu hit 28 homers in 2005 and 29 homers in 2008, but has struggled to produce at the plate since then. Cantu signed with the Padres last year, but they cut him after he posted a .194/.232/.285 line in 155 plate appearances. Cantu, a right-handed hitter, has hit lefties and righties at a nearly identical clip over the course of his eight-year career.
Wow, i really thought this guy was going to be a star. Maybe not an Puljos type but maybe a LaRoche/Dunn type. Amazing how far players in all sports fall from the spotlight so quickly!

woman in the throes, I say Freeman can be around .330-.340 on-base with a slugging in the .420-.430 range. But I can also see some seasons in the .320’s because he likes to hack, so he’s going to have to depend a lot on getting hits to boost his OBP and I can see him struggling more than other good hitters against the better pitchers and defenses.

Pitchers have to learn how to pitch and set hitters up, same for hitters, that’s what made CHipper so good, aside from a little talent(he-he) but CHipper was patient enough to work(recognizing strikes and balls) to get the count in his favor and to then look for a certain pitch in a certain location, FF and JH, at present don’t have a clue of how to do that, everything they are doing now is purely instinctual, but if and when they do, look out.. At present if I were a betting man I’d bet FF will have a better career than JH, but I hope they both do well.

Thanks Shaun, I’ll have to ruminate on that explanation. Are you saying a guy, even a 22 year old guy is what he is and will continue to swing at the same rate forever? Wouldn’t that suggest that he isn’t learning anything or at best learning at the same rate as the pitchers he is facing? Not saying you’re wrong but I just want to get my head around the concept.

Freeman does swing the bat quite often (over 50 percent of the pitches he’s seen since the beginning of last season) and swings and misses quite often (among Braves regulars since the beginning of 2011, only Uggla has a higher rate of swinging strikes). But his hit tool and power are just fine. It’s his discipline that may prevent him from being one of the better hitting firstbasemen in the game.

As I said, everyone knew Lowe was overpaid before he threw his first pitch for Atlanta. Don’t hate Lowe for that. It seems if one were going to direct their hate towards someone, it should be directed toward Wren. That’s like getting mad at the gate agent because the airline overbooked your flight and you don’t have a seat.
And if you are going to respond to my post, don’t use my own argument to make your case. I clearly said everyone knew Lowe was overpaid. I guess the real answer is some people think there is a direct relationship between a player’s salary and their future performance. Actually, it is more typically an inverse relationship for players later in their careers like Lowe was when he signed.
The Braves were desperate for starting pitching at the time. Lowe capitalized on that desperation. Both sides got what they bargained for. Don’t get mad at Lowe for enjoying a relaxing smoke afterwards. If you don’t like the way it feels afterward, grin and bear it. All participants involved should have known what to expect. Besides, I think it was worth to make the playoffs that one year. In that regard, it was money well-spent.

“I dunno, if I didn’t like 99% of the people on here, care about what they think, then I probably wouldn’t be on here” – I have no idea whether I’d like 99% of the people on here. I mostly come to read Carroll and DOB’s takes on the Braves. Occasionally I try to feel the pulse of the folks posting here but it is frequently a place I don’t care for and don’t stay. Sometimes an intelligent discussion pops up and piques my interest. When I come here it isn’t to make friends, though I’m not opposed to making friends, it is to discuss baseball in general and the Braves in particular. And FYI, when I referred to people I wouldn’t want to meet I was talking about that one douche, not everyone here.

Saving bullpen arms is good. Using Medlen for middle relief is not good. Gotta find someone else to help bridge the gap to the big 3.
Braves are the first team in history to make the argument that a good middle reliever is more important than a good starter. It’s simply not true. Medlen would help the Braves win more games by taking Delgado’s turn in the rotation. And actually there’s less need for middle relief innings without Delgado’s short starts.

I think what you mean is that Medlen would win more games than Delgado, which is quite different from “help the Braves win more games”. Medlen’s current role tends to be somewhat unquantifiable, so one can’t really say that having Medlen start plus another body in the bully is a better choice than Medlen in the bully plus some random fifth starter.

*************
I love Chipper as much as the next guy, but you’ve got to get real here.
1. We have to make the World Series.
2. We have to win the World Series.
3. Chipper has to stay somewhat healthy until the World Series.
4. Chipper has to play in all of the games.
5. Chipper has to dominate most of the games.
Have I said enough? It ain’t gonna happen.

Scoots, I think it’s easier to replace a good middle reliever than to find a good starter. And, therefore, I think Medlen would win more games than Delgado, and would help the Braves win more games.
Obviously most teams share this opinion. Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning? I’ve never heard that. Ever.

Othr than Mac, Uggs and Chipper, no one on the Braves’ roster is getting 10 mil.
At ~85 mill, how can you pay a guy 10 mil to not play for you? That, plus Mac, Uggs, and Chipper comes to ~half of the Braves payroll. So you have the 22 players splitting the other half.
That 10 mil could hve been sed to get some very good bench help.

Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning?
No, but I’m not making that argument, either.
One of the strengths of the team is the back-end bullpen, correct? Can you quantify the effect of saving wear and tear on those three arms? That’s hard to do. There may be a number of games that the Braves win because they are able to get to the back end of the bully in situations where they might otherwise not be able to do so were Medlen not in the bullpen. Be pretty tough to put an actual number on that. Might be zero, might be ten or fifteen, who knows?
Now balance that number against the losses that fifth starter might suffer. That guy isn’t going to lose 10 or 15 games, because he’ll get bounced before that happens, replaced by another pitcher (who may or may not be any better). It is just unlikely, in my opinion only, that Medlen could significantly alter the team’s W-L record over some other fifth starter to the point that such performance would outweigh his value of his current role. But I don’t have any numbers that will bear that out, because Medlen indirectly affects wins in that role.

I’m not saying Medlen doesn’t have value in the bullpen. He clearly does. My opinion is a good starter is more important than a # 3 or 4 reliever. If that’s not true, why do starters make so much more money than middle relievers? Guess I’m just not buying the Braves company line like some of you here. Agree with you scoots, it’s a debate that’s completely unquantifiable. Entirely a matter of opinion. My opinion is that Medlen is a potential all-star starting pitcher, not a 5th starter. A guy who can give you 200+ innings and 15+ wins is worth a lot. Starters that eat innings can save the bullpen, too. My opinion is that Medlen pitches efficiently enough that he’d be that type of starter. I don’t have proof of this, obviously.
The more relevant question is why nolie is such a douche bag?

Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning?
Another thing you’re not taking into consideration is that he pitched two innings last year after TJ surgery. The Braves probably don’t think it wise to ask Medlen to pitch 200 innings in the starting rotation after his 2011 numbers. He’s on pace for about 100 IP the way they’re using him now.

Saving bullpen arms is good. Using Medlen for middle relief is not good. Gotta find someone else to help bridge the gap to the big 3.
Let’s see…. Proctor? Linebrook? Sherrill? Durbin? Hernandez? Jesse Chavez? Resop? Boyer? Jorge Campillo? Don’t think the Big 3 would make it through September, IMO.
I’ll take Medlen in his current role.

nolie the non-Jack part of the bench. it’s pretty weak and not very versatile.
Deldago starting is another, but with a limited amount of funds I’m not sure whatever problems we have will be corrected.
and these issues are pretty mild, too. I have the bench guys as David Ross, Juan Fransisco, Matt Diaz, Eric Hinske, Jack Wilson. You think that thats weak…EXCEPT for jack wilson? cant agree with you there. I think the bench is unspectacular, but fairly solid. hinske will come around, and diaz and fransisco seem to be pulling their weight.

Take a look at the Phillies bullpen, for example. They don’t have the luxury of a “big 3″. They have a “big 2″. Would they be better if they moved, say, Cole Hamels, to the pen? That would obviously save innings for their big 2. And let’s say Hamels is replaced in the rotation by a young starter who’s not ready for the majors, and this starter just gives them 4 or 5 innings every 5th day while putting the team at a big disadvantage. Why not do that?
Obviously it’s a tremendous luxury if your team can afford a “big 4″ in the pen. But you can’t do that at the expense of the rotation, IMO. 29 teams agree with me.

glad to see Lowe doing well- no point second guessing trading him and eating the 10 mil ( can we go back in time and send Jurgens instead for a few prospects)- he was willing to come to Atlanta when no one else would Peavy, Burnett etc – Lowe won a bunch of games- carried us into the playoffs two years ago – sure he crashed last September but overall he did well in Atlanta- I don’t think he can do it for a whole season but 15 wins looks pretty attainable at this point

Of course you missed the point, nolie. But, yes, Hamels has a career record of 77-55. Career ERA of 3.38. I think Medlen has the potential to put up those kinds of numbers as a starter, based on where he was in 2010. Why not?
nolie
April 30th, 2012
6:11 pm
believe me I didn’t miss the point, i just think little of it. Hamels has pitched in a great hitter’s park of course his ERA is higher. he is a 126+, Lee is a 117+. and anybody who doesn’t know that he is a damned good pitcher needs to study up some.
by relying on ERA and W-L record as descriptions of a good pitcher is just so 1965-ish. no wonder I thought you would be incapable of understanding his summation. From your continued comments I see I was right

No, we were comparing the value of a good starter to a good middle reliever. If you buy nolie’s argument, the Phillies should be a better team by moving Hamels to the pen. Hamels was just an example, could’ve been any starter.
Med vs. Hamels comparison started as nolie arguing against his straw man. Nolie says Medlen will never have the “cool stats”. Wins and losses have not been relevant since 1965. I think the straw man won that argument.

“I liked Andrus, still do… but I miss Feliz and Harrison way way way more than I do Elvis”
Murph–Feliz and Harrison would benice, but the Braves have had the fortune or fortitude (depending on how U want to look at it) to keep the pirthing prospect train moving.
Andrus is a good ballplayer, his OPS is deceiving because he is never going to hit for power. If he gets in the .700’s of OPS, that is fine with the other stuff he does.
The Texiera deal was exciting at the time, JS did it for alot of the right reasons, but fooled himself in thinking he would be able to extend him.
The second Texiera deal is the one that bothered me, we would have been better off with draft picks than Casey Kotchman and Steve Marek. The picks could have amounted to something the way this system works most of the time.

Nolie–Wins and losses are ERA will never go out of style, though I am a big believer in IP and WHIP in addition to it.
Hey, I will always say that either Hammels and Lee are excellent pitchers.
The W-L is not the same measure that it used to be, I do wish they could change the way of awarding wins to starters to match how the game is managed in this century.
I think that it was either Chernoff or Oliver that made the point today that in the complete games of 1979, a guy was throwing 9 throwing 110 or so pitches because the hitters back in the day did not work the count the way they are coached today. So today, they are prolly throwing the same amount of pitches in 6 to 7 that they threw in 9 then.
In essence, we will not see the CG’s we used to see, hence alot more no decisions for SP’s.
I do wish that they would not award a W to a reliever who comes in and gives up a lead. If the SP throws at least 7 and leaves with a 2-0 or 2-1 lead, and the pen ties it up but the team comes back and win in 9, the starter who threw the 7 should get the win.
Call it the 7 inning rule. What is the best way to reward a SP who throws most of the game with a W.

Gattis to AA as primarily a LF makes a lot of sense. He was blocked for a promotion by Bethancourt who needed to get the most starts at C in AA. Given his age, he needs to find a faster route to a possible promotion to MLB than taking the time needed to develop as a C. Could be a valuable Sept. callup (or sooner) if he hits in AA anywhere close to his A+ numbers.
Simmons 4-4 with a BB yesterday brings his ave up to .321. If he keeps close to this pace for the first half of the season, might we see a release of Jack Wilson and letting the two rookies share time at SS?
Delgado is 2-2 so far, not 0-4. He had the control lapse leading to the GS in Arizona, but he gave up no runs and no hits in the other 5 innings. He has had 1 bad inning and one bad start so far. I don’t write it off as a sure loss everytime I see it’s his turn to pitch. The strategy of having Medlen in the bullpen has worked out well so far. There is no call for a rush to change it.

I’m also curious to see how 2B TOMMY LaSTELLA handles someone else behind him in the order. LaSTELLA typically hit third, GATTIS fourth. TOMMY is stroking the pill at a .362 clip right now with six doubles and 20 RBI.

Phil—Hey, I have coached kids and always told them the difference in how they should behave in the kids league and that the pros who argue, well that is their office, their business. Most of the arguing is generally not tolerated in kids leagues. In basketball, the kids league I was in, the kids just started to run their mouth, it was a TECH, and correctly so.
That is what sometimes goes on in the game at the higher level.
Of course you would never go off like that in a real world office but the game does not reflect the real world.
Some of the tactics used in coaching sports at the high levels are never used in the real world. That is why its a game.

I think they’ll look like the same team but from the way it’s shaping up, when the series is over … there won’t have been many runs scored between the two teams (and whether it’s 1-0 wins or 3-2 wins, all the Braves need is, at best, take 2-3 and win the series)

Durbin is not mediocre. He is a below average ML reliever that we have a million to instead of letting one of the young guys have a chance. Of course, if Viz doesn’t blow out his elbow, Durbin isn’t here anyway. But still, we have guys in the minors that can outperform Durbin’s career stats. On such a tight budget, I would think that million would come in handy at the tread deadline.

Mac is the best offensive catcher in the game (in 2012)?
I would take Napoli, Posey, Mauer when healthy, and even Molina on offense alone.
Hell, The way Mac has turned into a strict pull hitter into the shift, I like Josh Tole almost as well. No power but aqlways a competetive AB and a lot of hits — a catching version of the Rev we have seen this past week.

I’m probably the only one who feels this way, but I feel that McCann has become a liability as a catcher and as a clean’up hitter. His blocking of balls in the dirt leaves a lot to be desired, his pitch selection and positioning just doesn’t make sense sometomes, how long has it been since hes had a meaningful hit, how many runs have scored as a result of him bot blocking the plate or misplaying the relay throw,or acting like he is in a fog back there. I expect much better from an “all star catcher.

after some good starts, a few of the starters end April with their ERA’s going in the wrong direction:
Delgado: 6.30
Minor: 4.68

Delgado is starting to get blasted but Minor’s result is from just 2 bad starts (vs Mets / vs Pirates). Minor can get it turned around but I might start worrying about Delgado …. just have to see how he does in his next start vs Blanton and the Phillies

Wren? He doesn’t irk me as much as the bench decisions made regarding several areas–focus on starting pitching and Mr Minor….when it is apparent the command issues are causing him to not utilize his full arsenal of hurls–effective was only the fastball. Why are we latent in sending him downstairs? For heavens sake; we have other arms available for these situations and preparation for this should be all worked out in the off season, i.e., what to do and when. No, we sit there on our @ss and watch the guy implode because the opponent is waiting for the one and only pitch working–the fastball. Seems to me if you are that incapable on any given night/outing…a 4-2 score at hand I’d be thinking minimize the other teams runs–not wait for more=balls parked in outfield seats.

Mac’s replacement in the organization is at AA, at least 1 year away. Would the Braves get value for him if they traded him now? I doubt they would get an offensive player that would be good for 20-25 HRs and 90 RBIs (I don’t think McCann will reach those numbers this year either) He wouldn’t bring back a Garza or that quality of a starter, and it’s unlikely he would bring back a catcher any better than say Johnny Estrada before the collison. What is disturbing about his offense is that he is not giving good ABs, How many times this month have we seen him have ABs of 4 or more pitches? Someone asked when was his last big hit? The line drive off the head of Guerra in the LA series. The thing about that was that if it did not hit the pitcher and bounce toward third, it would have been right to the player behind 2B in the shift.

He was the best offensive player at his position (joe Mauer excepted when he was healthy)

Mac seems to be a low energy type with some athletic challenges who can wallop a baseball a mile…he got to where he has with impressing with his bat–since his second year late he has been inconsistent in both blocking low pitches in the dirt and making the catch and tag at the plate. The only way we get a great deal in trading him is if his BA is over .285 and he hits 28-30 homers. Good luck Mr. Wren.

Why would you trade the best offensive catcher in baseball? And though Brian is average in many ways defensively, he calls a very good game and is one of the best catchers at framing the ball for the ump.
Wieters and Posey are young; do it for a few years, then come talk to me. Napoli is NOT a very good catcher, and probably is better suited for DH or first. Mauer is injury prone. Molina is a great defensive catcher, and a good offensive threat.
Mac is still the best.

McCann’s highest ratings – All occurred in 2008 or before except HR in 2011 when he hit 24. He hit 23 in 2008. And OBP in 2010 when he got on base at a .375%. In 2008 he got on base .002 less @ .373. This is a clear gradual decline in the purest offenssive sense.
McCann IMO has clearly had his best years and it was four years ago after 2008 when the decline began. It’s early this year but I sure don’t see anything but more downward trending this year.
Games 2008 – 145
Plate App 2008 – 573
At Bat 2008 – 509
Runs 2008 – 68
Hits 2008 – 153
2B 2008 – 42

You could be right, but I don’t think the drop off is so glaring. Actually last year, he was tracking for a similar year to 2008 before the injury.
Sure, he woulda had a bit of a drop off in September anyway due to fatigue, but nothing like what happened to him after the injury.
I’m not saying he won’t drop off some from this point forward, but I sure wouldn’t bet on it.
Up until he was DL’d last year, he had 18 dingers and a slash line of 306/375/514/889.

Nobody should’ve expected Mike Minor to go on the pace he was at for his last 3,4 starts, and if they did then you just set yourselves up. He’s got good stuff and has matured, but it takes a while for a young pitcher. Not like he was the #1 sought after player in the draft a few years ago. There’s a reason for that and probably because he’s a future middle rotation guy and those aren’t guys that are real consistant.

Wayne – you’re a fair guy as long as the other party is fair with you and talking rationally. Look at his career numbers together and you can not miss that he peaked in 08 and has gradually fallen off every year since.
My real point is that with BMac’s body, conditioning program and weight issue, that he has peaked a few years too soon and that we have seen the best years of Brian McCann.
He was the smartess cat in the classroom and didn’t think he needed to study to stay at the top of the class. He was wrong. We want no part of any high dollar long term contract with him.

Well here’s my positives of our guys:
Bourn – ignites the lineup. An elite leadoff hitter
Prado – when on, hardly any #2 hitter is better
Freeman – hits to al field and with power and adjusts quick
Mac – always been an all star hitter
Uggla – expect 30 or more homers again

Pastornicky – always puts up a fight at the plate which you love to see

keylargo, scary, but possible. Mac could’ve already peaked with the reasons you mentioned. I just think he’s hurting with something causing his bat speed to slow a tad and he’s pressuring. He’s just too good a hitter. Also that shift most all teams are putting on him could be playing with his head. He’s been robbed of hit after hit both on that shift and some good outfield plays.

You just answered a question I’ve long wanted to ask: “What’s your favorite Buffett CD?” The summer that album came out I worked in the Thunderbolt Boat Repair Yard just outside of Savannah during the four month school break and lived out on Tybee Island within the sound of the surf. “Coast Of Marseilles” was–and is–a favorite cut and I’ve always thought “Sending The Old Man Home” would have fit well on that album.
One day–as fate would have it–we dry docked his Euphoria II for a couple of hours to do some shaft work and he was most gracious to us there in the yard. As a Parrot-head,you would have been proud.

The Good Wife is a great drama. It just finished its best year. Julianna Margulies is awesome. All that. Still: the worst season-end-hour I can recall. Ever. At least for a watchable show. All over the place…
At least Kathy Bates saved the day. Not only a great episode of “Kathy’s Law,” but a nice run tonight as Charlie Sheen. Might’ve been even better than ol’ Charlie. Made a dying show great again. The beautiful, artistic climax: ‘And me with just a nut-sack.’

That might not be a good idea to trade Beachy, Minor ,or Hanson, because they show promise of being an Ace some day. Do you trade J.J. for an Ace then? What would you do with Beachy, and Minor, and Hanson? Tough decision to make. Braves will have to make a move at the All Star Break. Just hope it’s the right one. Same goes for hitting. The only spot I see is a move for a SS. Don’t trade the Rev, because he has promise, but the Braves need a bat,and I would trade Jack Wilson. He hasn’t hit much, and we don’t need another Agon in line up.

Ef, did you see the game last night? Saw Polished dish up some 92mph pitches. That was pleasing. Too bad he left so many over the plate. Still though, even when the Pirates, owners of no winning record in the last 20 years, kept smashing the ball off the wall, Polished looked poised up there on the mound. And he went into the 7th which is also pleasing.
The most pleasing part, to me, about Polished going 6.1 innings is it means Fredi refrained from yanking him after he’d already given up 6 runs. He let him go back out there in the 7th and try to keep going. So kudos Fredi. Very nice job.

For someone as bullpen-happy as Fredi is, I’m really surprised he left Minor in as long as he did… I guess it was just his turn to take one for the team.
Minor was overdue for a mediocre start… this just means that he’s going to invoke the Hanna Rule and shutout the next team he faces. Even with yesterday’s start I’m still pleasantly surprised by Minor thus far in 2012.
I didn’t watch the game so I don’t really have any other comments. Mighty proud of Hinske getting out there and going 4-4… that’s awesome.

Seriously, just one of those nights. No pitcher brings his “A” game every night, not Halladay or Verlander or Minor. Nothing fundamentally wrong with Minor that would lead you to believe that nine-run outings are his future norm, so why would anybody get bent outta shape over a single game?

Last September the Braves hit .235/.300/.357/.657.
Prior to this Pirates series the Braves were hitting .261/.324/.422/.746
… thus showing no team could continue to hit at that low of level.
Before this series the Pirates were hitting: .221/.269/.325/.594 this season.
They hit .258/.333/.386/.720 during the series.

A rubber-game is only “rubber” when it decides which team wins the series. If there is a “rubber” game it implies that the first two games of a 3 game series were split. If a single team wins both of the first two games, the third game is not “rubber.” It is merely a chance to avoid or, depending on perspective, gain a sweep.

So, I read it again. Then I looked it up on Google, but got distracted when a coworker sent me a link to a funny talking dog video. So, I watched that twice, then remembered what I was doing and went back to Google and looked it up again.
THEN, I copied the Google definition of “rubber game” which I was going to use to craft a witty retort, but as I was about to paste it I was filled with self-doubt and had a struggle with myself about whether or not to make Toma look silly for not knowing what a rubber game is.
Instead I posted my response in question form so as not to sound as if I were attacking him, yet making sure that others would jump all over it in their response.
So, in summation, it was more like 3 or 4 minutes. But at least I got to watch a video of a funny talking dog, so it wasn’t a complete loss.

Actually, it was a very, very, very, incredibly astute, and excellent decision to leave Minor out there pitching. It would have been foolish and idiotic beyond reason to yank him after the one out single in the fourth to preserve the lead before Pedro Alverez hit his 2 run HR…. and then hope beyond reason that the bullpen would hold for 6 innings of shut out ball for a win.
Or shall we also blame Fredi for the Braves inability to plate a run from the 5th inning on?

Correct me if I’m wrong, Monty, but the Braves went 6-12 against the Phils last season. Not good, not good at all. But, if memory serves, they lost games to the Phils during the Great Skid of 2011. Then, again, the Braves lost games to just about every NL team they played during that dark time in Bravos’ history.
In 2010, as I recall, the Braves either split the season series with the Phils or came close.

Disagree. Poor management would have done this. The type of crappy managing that over utilizes a bullpen when your starter has only thrown 80 pitches through 5 innings and completed the 5th in order with 2 strike outs. In the sixth it was a walk then HR… followed by two strikeouts and a weak grounder.
No. Fredi made the exact right call leaving Polished in there and letting him go back out in the 7th. He pulled him at 107 pitches. That elongated his bullpen heading into a series against a division rival. It gave his young “rookie-ish” 5th starter some experience. It was the absolute right thing to do and doing otherwise would have been foolish and short-sighted. And as it is, the team would have lost anyway by following the brash, knee-jerk, yank-em quick attitude Fredi had last season. They would have lost and more arms would have been used out of the pen making the Phillies series that much more difficult.

He probably came down with a season “ending” injury which will lead to nagging injuries, a prolong slump, and the Braves using him as a platoon player, much like last season.

No you’re right, Braves were 6-12 against the Phils last season and you were pretty close to right, on 2010, 8-10. Totaled that’s 14-22. I’m just not sure I would call that “playing the Phillies well” as far as recent games go. 8 games under .500. But the real kicker for me is that in the last 3 seasons Braves are 5-21 against Philly after the All-Star break. That’s getting “owned” especially when you have a good team, which the Braves have had.To me that’s being in someone’s head type of numbers. September numbers against them are even more pathetic the past 3 seasons. But, it is only May 1st so there is a glimmer of hope and they are without their top 2 hitters!

Mayberry? Victorino? Ruiz? Thome?
I mean heck the Pirates were the worst offense in the NL and put up 9 runs on us last night, against one of our best pitchers so far this year. Yet another reason Durbin should be let go. Guy has a 9.00 ERA, he is basically going to give up a run in every game he pitches in. I’m not sure that’s what you want from a guy especially if he is going to get used in a 6-3 game.
I’d rather have a AAA guy come up and have a 5.00-6.00 ERA all year long, make less money, and give up less runs. Novel idea, I know.

Releasing Durbin will not save the Braves any money. He’s had some bad outings and some good outings. If his replacement isn’t going to be significantly better, might as well keep things as they are.

I like the reread the in-game D&G-ers after the game is over. Since Braves are winning about 60% of the time and D&G-ers are “throw in the towel” 100% of the time, it’s actually pretty entertaining.
I know I’m wrong some of the time, but these guys are wrong at least 60% of the time. Maybe that’s pretty good in baseball terms, but it’s pretty lousy in real life.

Here’s another weird stat no one will care about:
The Braves have 8 different players (at least 20 PA) who have an OPS between .758 and .799, twice as many as any other team. (Only the Royals (4) and Rockies (3) have more than two.)
The only outliers: Bourn (.811), Prado (.712), McCann (.681), and Wilson (.226).
The Braves have been a very balanced offensive club, with no real dominant players, but a whole bunch of good performers.

Tomahawkin, worse. He said that Beachy was a 4 or 5 and backed it up by saying he hasn’t won enough games.
I think what he was just trying to say was that it’s too early to say he’s in a class with the best pitchers. But he used a poor choice of words. No scout or coach or anyone in the industry would say Beachy is a 4 or 5. Plus he used pitcher wins for a pitcher who has only one full season in the majors under his belt and pitched for a team that had a poor offensive season that one full season.
