But I’m sure will pull a Jurjjens and not trade a guy or two when they have value left.

Mac is the best offensive catcher in the game (in 2012)?
I would take Napoli, Posey, Mauer when healthy, and even Molina on offense alone.
Hell, The way Mac has turned into a strict pull hitter into the shift, I like Josh Tole almost as well. No power but aqlways a competetive AB and a lot of hits — a catching version of the Rev we have seen this past week.

All this talk about the Pirates being some sort of standard for mediocrity is dumb. They bust out occasionally, like everyone. Even the 1989 Braves would put up a 9 now and then. Stop whining! So we’re getting killed. Hey, they are in the majors too.

i see a lot of mistakes in this team:
1.- THE LINEUP :
a poor obp by freeman he dont deserve the 3rd spot in the lineup ,,,, is chipper the right player in 3rd spot…. No McCann in cleaup spot….is Uggla with lately clutch hits who deserves the cleanup spot…
release Durbin and call up anybody for AAA
send down Francisco to AAA and call up Constanza…..
i prefer Constanza on LF and Prado on 3B in Chipper’s day off instead Prado on LF and Francisco on 3B…..

Half Empty,
I did not say anything about the Pirates. They are mediocre in 2012, but not terrible. They lack power, but have good pitching, and a decent young nucleus in McCutcheon, Walker, Alvarez, Tabata. They will hit a lot better than they have in April, but not as well as they have tonight. They should end up in the middle of the pack of the NL Central.

No team is as bad as they look when they are losing, and no team is as good as they look when they are winning. That is why I take anything that happens this year with a grain of salt. Half, not obessessing much at all. Simply pointing out the fact that it would be a logical conclusion for one to reach that when reading someone referring to someone else as mediocre that said someone was indeed calling the someone else average.
No offense taken in the least. Just having a friendly convo as we get slaughtered by the worst offensive team in baseball which lends credence to the fact that Durbin is indeed not mediocre and well below average.

I’m probably the only one who feels this way, but I feel that McCann has become a liability as a catcher and as a clean’up hitter. His blocking of balls in the dirt leaves a lot to be desired, his pitch selection and positioning just doesn’t make sense sometomes, how long has it been since hes had a meaningful hit, how many runs have scored as a result of him bot blocking the plate or misplaying the relay throw,or acting like he is in a fog back there. I expect much better from an “all star catcher.

after some good starts, a few of the starters end April with their ERA’s going in the wrong direction:
Delgado: 6.30
Minor: 4.68
(the demoted JJ: 9.37)
Delgado is starting to get blasted but Minor’s result is from just 2 bad starts (vs Mets / vs Pirates). Minor can get it turned around but I might start worrying about Delgado …. just have to see how he does in his next start vs Blanton and the Phillies

Wren? He doesn’t irk me as much as the bench decisions made regarding several areas–focus on starting pitching and Mr Minor….when it is apparent the command issues are causing him to not utilize his full arsenal of hurls–effective was only the fastball. Why are we latent in sending him downstairs? For heavens sake; we have other arms available for these situations and preparation for this should be all worked out in the off season, i.e., what to do and when. No, we sit there on our @ss and watch the guy implode because the opponent is waiting for the one and only pitch working–the fastball. Seems to me if you are that incapable on any given night/outing…a 4-2 score at hand I’d be thinking minimize the other teams runs–not wait for more=balls parked in outfield seats.

I love Mac, but he is what he is. He is an average defensive catcher who happens to be the best offensive player at his position in all of baseball. But, he should not bat cleanup. I like him in the 6-hole myself.

April 30th, 2012
10:50 pm
Mac’s replacement in the organization is at AA, at least 1 year away. Would the Braves get value for him if they traded him now? I doubt they would get an offensive player that would be good for 20-25 HRs and 90 RBIs (I don’t think McCann will reach those numbers this year either) He wouldn’t bring back a Garza or that quality of a starter, and it’s unlikely he would bring back a catcher any better than say Johnny Estrada before the collison. What is disturbing about his offense is that he is not giving good ABs, How many times this month have we seen him have ABs of 4 or more pitches? Someone asked when was his last big hit? The line drive off the head of Guerra in the LA series. The thing about that was that if it did not hit the pitcher and bounce toward third, it would have been right to the player behind 2B in the shift.
