Who said Hamels isn’t a damn good pitcher? You’re pretty good arguing against strawmen, nolie. Carry on.

damn I didn’t get away quick enuff.
you were complaining about his ERA and W-L totals and you originally refused to include him as one of Philly’s great pitchers. Talk like that usually indicate a less that stellar regard for a player so I’m not sure where you think I came up with a strawman
bye for good this time.

No, we were comparing the value of a good starter to a good middle reliever. If you buy nolie’s argument, the Phillies should be a better team by moving Hamels to the pen. Hamels was just an example, could’ve been any starter.
Med vs. Hamels comparison started as nolie arguing against his straw man. Nolie says Medlen will never have the “cool stats”. Wins and losses have not been relevant since 1965. I think the straw man won that argument.

“I liked Andrus, still do… but I miss Feliz and Harrison way way way more than I do Elvis”
Murph–Feliz and Harrison would benice, but the Braves have had the fortune or fortitude (depending on how U want to look at it) to keep the pirthing prospect train moving.
Andrus is a good ballplayer, his OPS is deceiving because he is never going to hit for power. If he gets in the .700’s of OPS, that is fine with the other stuff he does.
The Texiera deal was exciting at the time, JS did it for alot of the right reasons, but fooled himself in thinking he would be able to extend him.
The second Texiera deal is the one that bothered me, we would have been better off with draft picks than Casey Kotchman and Steve Marek. The picks could have amounted to something the way this system works most of the time.

Refused to include him as one of Phillie’s great pitchers? Where? When? I’m going with your argument that a great starter makes an even better middle reliever, and wins more games for his team in the process.
What was that you said about “incapable of understanding”?

“by relying on ERA and W-L record as descriptions of a good pitcher is just so 1965-ish. no wonder I thought you would be incapable of understanding his summation”
Nolie–Wins and losses are ERA will never go out of style, though I am a big believer in IP and WHIP in addition to it.
Hey, I will always say that either Hammels and Lee are excellent pitchers.
The W-L is not the same measure that it used to be, I do wish they could change the way of awarding wins to starters to match how the game is managed in this century.
I think that it was either Chernoff or Oliver that made the point today that in the complete games of 1979, a guy was throwing 9 throwing 110 or so pitches because the hitters back in the day did not work the count the way they are coached today. So today, they are prolly throwing the same amount of pitches in 6 to 7 that they threw in 9 then.
In essence, we will not see the CG’s we used to see, hence alot more no decisions for SP’s.
I do wish that they would not award a W to a reliever who comes in and gives up a lead. If the SP throws at least 7 and leaves with a 2-0 or 2-1 lead, and the pen ties it up but the team comes back and win in 9, the starter who threw the 7 should get the win.
Call it the 7 inning rule. What is the best way to reward a SP who throws most of the game with a W.

Gattis to AA as primarily a LF makes a lot of sense. He was blocked for a promotion by Bethancourt who needed to get the most starts at C in AA. Given his age, he needs to find a faster route to a possible promotion to MLB than taking the time needed to develop as a C. Could be a valuable Sept. callup (or sooner) if he hits in AA anywhere close to his A+ numbers.
Simmons 4-4 with a BB yesterday brings his ave up to .321. If he keeps close to this pace for the first half of the season, might we see a release of Jack Wilson and letting the two rookies share time at SS?
Delgado is 2-2 so far, not 0-4. He had the control lapse leading to the GS in Arizona, but he gave up no runs and no hits in the other 5 innings. He has had 1 bad inning and one bad start so far. I don’t write it off as a sure loss everytime I see it’s his turn to pitch. The strategy of having Medlen in the bullpen has worked out well so far. There is no call for a rush to change it.
