I think Lowe going to Cleveland is a good move regardless of what he does over there. I like that Beachy, Minor and Hansen are getting to pitch so many innings. Can’t wait to see Gilmartin, Teheran, and Delgado compete to be in the rotation. I also think Medlin could start.

“I dunno, if I didn’t like 99% of the people on here, care about what they think, then I probably wouldn’t be on here” – I have no idea whether I’d like 99% of the people on here. I mostly come to read Carroll and DOB’s takes on the Braves. Occasionally I try to feel the pulse of the folks posting here but it is frequently a place I don’t care for and don’t stay. Sometimes an intelligent discussion pops up and piques my interest. When I come here it isn’t to make friends, though I’m not opposed to making friends, it is to discuss baseball in general and the Braves in particular. And FYI, when I referred to people I wouldn’t want to meet I was talking about that one douche, not everyone here.

Saving bullpen arms is good. Using Medlen for middle relief is not good. Gotta find someone else to help bridge the gap to the big 3.

Braves are the first team in history to make the argument that a good middle reliever is more important than a good starter. It’s simply not true. Medlen would help the Braves win more games by taking Delgado’s turn in the rotation. And actually there’s less need for middle relief innings without Delgado’s short starts.

Medlen would help the Braves win more games by taking Delgado’s turn in the rotation.

I think what you mean is that Medlen would win more games than Delgado, which is quite different from “help the Braves win more games”. Medlen’s current role tends to be somewhat unquantifiable, so one can’t really say that having Medlen start plus another body in the bully is a better choice than Medlen in the bully plus some random fifth starter.

There is something special about this team. I did not feel the same last season because I figured we would have to have a ton of good luck and planetary alignment to get us to the big show. This season, with the few key additions and subtractions we made (Bye bye D Lowe-we won’t miss you, and as for you Gonzo, even my daughter last season (she is 10) hated when you came to the plate especially with RISP-because she and I both knew “out”) this season is different. Especially Chipper. He is leading this team and even though Kemp is a lock for the MVP, Chipper this year is the Braves MVP. He has injected something special-call it energy, call it confidence. But I have not had this much confidence since the ‘96 season. I have not felt this excited about the Braves since the ‘91 and ‘92 seasons-it is like we have the energy back. Remember how Buckhead sports bars were over crowded and Atlantans hanging on every Avery or Glavin or Maddux or Smoltzy pitch? What is different about this team vs. the ‘91 team is Chipper. We get to watch his story book farewell season. This will be a year to remember. How awesome will it be if Chipper is the WS MVP…
*************
I love Chipper as much as the next guy, but you’ve got to get real here.
1. We have to make the World Series.
2. We have to win the World Series.
3. Chipper has to stay somewhat healthy until the World Series.
4. Chipper has to play in all of the games.
5. Chipper has to dominate most of the games.

Have I said enough? It ain’t gonna happen.

Scoots, I think it’s easier to replace a good middle reliever than to find a good starter. And, therefore, I think Medlen would win more games than Delgado, and would help the Braves win more games.

Obviously most teams share this opinion. Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning? I’ve never heard that. Ever.

The Lowe trade was bound to happen after his performance last season…I just think the Braves are paying way too much of his salary regardless.

Othr than Mac, Uggs and Chipper, no one on the Braves’ roster is getting 10 mil.

At ~85 mill, how can you pay a guy 10 mil to not play for you? That, plus Mac, Uggs, and Chipper comes to ~half of the Braves payroll. So you have the 22 players splitting the other half.

That 10 mil could hve been sed to get some very good bench help.

Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning?

No, but I’m not making that argument, either. :-)

One of the strengths of the team is the back-end bullpen, correct? Can you quantify the effect of saving wear and tear on those three arms? That’s hard to do. There may be a number of games that the Braves win because they are able to get to the back end of the bully in situations where they might otherwise not be able to do so were Medlen not in the bullpen. Be pretty tough to put an actual number on that. Might be zero, might be ten or fifteen, who knows?

Now balance that number against the losses that fifth starter might suffer. That guy isn’t going to lose 10 or 15 games, because he’ll get bounced before that happens, replaced by another pitcher (who may or may not be any better). It is just unlikely, in my opinion only, that Medlen could significantly alter the team’s W-L record over some other fifth starter to the point that such performance would outweigh his value of his current role. But I don’t have any numbers that will bear that out, because Medlen indirectly affects wins in that role.

Agree with you scoots, it’s a debate that’s completely unquantifiable. Entirely a matter of opinion. My opinion is that Medlen is a potential all-star starting pitcher, not a 5th starter. A guy who can give you 200+ innings and 15+ wins is worth a lot. Starters that eat innings can save the bullpen, too. My opinion is that Medlen pitches efficiently enough that he’d be that type of starter. I don’t have proof of this, obviously.

The more relevant question is why nolie is such a douche bag?

keylargo

Have you ever heard any team make the argument they’re holding a good starter out of the rotation because they really need someone who can pitch a good 6th inning?

Another thing you’re not taking into consideration is that he pitched two innings last year after TJ surgery. The Braves probably don’t think it wise to ask Medlen to pitch 200 innings in the starting rotation after his 2011 numbers. He’s on pace for about 100 IP the way they’re using him now.

Frankie Wren

Saving bullpen arms is good. Using Medlen for middle relief is not good. Gotta find someone else to help bridge the gap to the big 3.

Let’s see…. Proctor? Linebrook? Sherrill? Durbin? Hernandez? Jesse Chavez? Resop? Boyer? Jorge Campillo? Don’t think the Big 3 would make it through September, IMO.

nolie the non-Jack part of the bench. it’s pretty weak and not very versatile.
Deldago starting is another, but with a limited amount of funds I’m not sure whatever problems we have will be corrected.

and these issues are pretty mild, too. I have the bench guys as David Ross, Juan Fransisco, Matt Diaz, Eric Hinske, Jack Wilson. You think that thats weak…EXCEPT for jack wilson? cant agree with you there. I think the bench is unspectacular, but fairly solid. hinske will come around, and diaz and fransisco seem to be pulling their weight.

he is not just pitching middle relief, he is also pitching in lieu of one of the big three. did you miss the figures on how many less innings they have so far?

Don’t worry, once the weather warms up and D. Lowe starts sweating like a pig, those numbers will correct themselves….

I think its weak in realtion to what we should get from particular slots on the bench. They are gonna carry a light-hitting goof fielding SS no matter what and I don’t think anybody else will be enough of an improvement over Jack to talk about. I do believe that several others could be improved on relative to what we would like to expect. hey we all see it differently

I am very often told, here in the real world, that people have trouble reading me.

I admit i like it that way.

See you good people around gametime….except for Samantha and her merry gang, i trust.

nolie, you might want to check yourself if you’re oblivious to the fact this is douche-baggery:

“great summation scoots, but likely wasted on the target subject in that case….”

Would you like for me to explain why this makes you a douche bag, douche bag? This is fun…

Take a look at the Phillies bullpen, for example. They don’t have the luxury of a “big 3″. They have a “big 2″. Would they be better if they moved, say, Cole Hamels, to the pen? That would obviously save innings for their big 2. And let’s say Hamels is replaced in the rotation by a young starter who’s not ready for the majors, and this starter just gives them 4 or 5 innings every 5th day while putting the team at a big disadvantage. Why not do that?

Obviously it’s a tremendous luxury if your team can afford a “big 4″ in the pen. But you can’t do that at the expense of the rotation, IMO. 29 teams agree with me.

This early above-avg. heat has everybody a bit touchy…..LOL.

Relax…..lets just win tonight and worry about the mighty Nats later.

you are comparing Hamels with an ERA+ over his career of 126 and who would be at least a #2 in most rotations, to Medlen? :?

glad to see Lowe doing well- no point second guessing trading him and eating the 10 mil ( can we go back in time and send Jurgens instead for a few prospects)- he was willing to come to Atlanta when no one else would Peavy, Burnett etc – Lowe won a bunch of games- carried us into the playoffs two years ago – sure he crashed last September but overall he did well in Atlanta- I don’t think he can do it for a whole season but 15 wins looks pretty attainable at this point

What is the deal with your name debravity – a combination of ‘depravity’ and ‘Braves?’

Wow. That’s creative.

Much like another frequenter of this blog ‘disgusted’ – I will probably read none of your posts because your name is over the top, and ultimately, pretty lame.

need to subtract games/innings that Kimbrel Venters and O pitched to get work in… so the stats are even more impressive.

Of course you missed the point, nolie. But, yes, Hamels has a career record of 77-55. Career ERA of 3.38. I think Medlen has the potential to put up those kinds of numbers as a starter, based on where he was in 2010. Why not?

believe me I didn’t miss the point, i just think little of it. Hamels has pitched in a great hitter’s park of course his ERA is higher. he is a 126+, Lee is a 117+. and anybody who doesn’t know that he is a damned good pitcher needs to study up some.
by relying on ERA and W-L record as descriptions of a good pitcher is just so 1965-ish. no wonder I thought you would be incapable of understanding his summation. From your continued comments I see I was right
