Chicken or the egg – are these kids’ essays and papers so bad because they can’t be bothered to learn anything and express anything themselves, or because they’ve all gotten the idea of “short cuts” from someone “teaching” them how to write an essay to get into a “good” school? No, there isn’t.
It’s amusing to see people whine about Freddie is so good for a bit and then so bad for a bit. Apart from the fact he’s 22, if it were that easy to be good game after game for 162, .400 wouldn’t be so damn hard to obtain!

You right, nolie. These kids think of themselves as self motivated. Teachers need to take that self image seriously and challenge them. …plus Mitchell is reduced to saying “they didn’t deserve to win”. It isn’t enough to actually, you know, win; gotta deserve it.
Every so often, I realize that it’s actually the D&G folks here who are the real Pollyannas, for they think that every AB should be successful, every pitch should be on the black at the knees, the offense should never score fewer than a dozen, and pitchers should never give up a run. Now, if that isn’t a rose-colored view, I don’t know what is.
From Elias: Tim Hudson was credited with the win in his season debut, despite lasting only five innings in the Braves’ 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Hudon has never lost his first start of a season, going 6-0 with eight “no-decisions” in those games (1999-2012).
From the little I’ve seen, it looks like Heyward is being jammed again and not adjusting.
I feel bad for the kid, because he can’t have just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill slump like any player goes through.
Still, his line drive percentage is up, his flyball percentage is up and his groundball percentage is way down. As long as he keeps that up, he’ll start getting his hits again and plenty of them will leave dents on the wall or become souvenirs.
I know process without results is an impenetrable fog to plenty here, though, so should still be plenty of room for calls to trade the guy, LOL.
They need to find some way to administer a shock to Heyward every time he hits a ground ball to the second baseman. Light him up and maybe he’ll change his ways.
“…..How is Sean Gilmartin doing? Will he be next in line for a shot at the roation, should the need arise? Or, is he not an option this year? Thanks……”
Having his ups and downs. His downs are almost decent, and his ups are excellent. He wil be a solid # 3-4 starter once he learns the game. A year, year and a half away from knocking on the ATLANTA door off his stats this season. In my opionion of course
Don’t get me all excited now. He does that normally. A surge, then a swoon, then another surge. After several of those he begins hitting with consistancy.
I do think he’s surging stronger this year and at a higher level than he has in the past. Give him another month. By June 1 we ought to know what’s up with him in regard to being moved up or not.

According to my cheat-sheet, I get to see my second BRAVES game this season on MLBN at 7:00 p.m. Break out the party favors and the beer and pretzels. Yahoo!
Hey GIL. Want to go to your favorite watering hole for the game?
The Braves’ bullpen has a 1.64 ERA over the last 12 games.
In that span, Medlen, Venters, O’Flaherty, and Durbin have combined to pitch 18.1 scoreless innings, with only 7 hits allowed, 7 walks, and 18 strikeouts.
Kimbrel has given up two runs in this interval (his only two runs of the season), and Hernandez and Martinez have given up five combined in 15 innings.
Don’t you think the little guys should have access to markets that are open after ours close? Then we could buy up a company overnight and dump the stock on the open in the U.S. of A.
By contrast, there are nine division series for the team in July and August, nearly twice as many as the early season, and the Braves play more division games in September than the entire first third of the season.
The back of our bench sucks balls. But we have known this for months and as long as our everyday starters stay healthy and productive, it won’t matter much. However, should the injury bug bite….the holes in this team will be big enough to drove a semi through.
Coach, what are you talking about? Jack Wilson’s not much of a hitter, but isn’t expected to be. Ross, Hinske, Diaz, and Francisco are all offensive weapons. I think the Braves have as good a bench as anyone in baseball.
However, should the injury bug bite….the holes in this team will be big enough to drove a semi through.
Name three eams that wouldn’t have the same problem, Coach. Come on, you’re just looking for a spoonful of sad in a buffet of joy, aren’t you?
I eman, the pitching at both ends has been good, the offensive depth is allowing them to withstand slumpy players and still score runs, and the defense has been…OK, defense hasn’t been great, fine. But, honestly, they aren’t even on full-tilt-boogie and had a great month. I can live with that.

>>>>>>>>>
Haven’t been paying attention have you?
Diaz in my opinion doesn’t belong in the big leagues anymore. Jack Wilson can’t hit his way out of a paper sack. He’s here to play defense and mentor Pastornicky. Ross, Hinske and Francisco are good bench guys for sure.
But this what’s wrong with the picture. We DO NOT HAVE a utility player. The kind of versatile athlete who can play multiple positions….ergo – Omar Infante. We do not have a true fourth outfielder, someone who can back up all three outfield spots. These two role players are missing, and they will become an issue the deeper we get into the season.
Name three eams that wouldn’t have the same problem, Coach. Come on, you’re just looking for a spoonful of sad in a buffet of joy, aren’t you?
Nope. I have been singing the same tune for months, even before the season started. This problem is gonna jump up and bite them in the butt sooner or later.
Couch Tater, April 30th, 2012 , 12:12 am … “Abeeewright – Every time I see your name, it reminds me of Marty Feldman in Young Frankenstein. “Abby Normal”.”
I’ll take that as a compliment. Loved Young Frankenstein … best comedy of all time in my book.
Pastornicky is starting to get comfortable at the plate. Expect a solid output from him. With the way things look I see him batting atop the lineup next season unless the Braves spend some money.
In a microscopic sample size, admittedly, Diaz has an .800 OPS, .980 against lefties. At least for now, that would tend to belie the notion that he’s done.
but yes, I also knew from day one that this team would win. Why?
Pitching, pitching, pitching pitching, pitching out the butthole. We have it pouring out our ears. so don’t go misunderstanding the message, this team will win, period. But they also have problems which haven’t manifested themselves just yet.
Juan “Flailing” Francisco has struck out 31% of the time so far, and only walked 1 time. But 6 of his 8 hits have gone for XBH, 3 doubles and 3 homers leading to a massive 571 SLG
From the little I’ve seen, it looks like Heyward is being jammed again and not adjusting.
I didn’t get a chance to watch any baseball this weekend (I know, I’m not a real fan) but the few Heyward AB’s I’ve seen lately make me think that he’s just hitting the ball to where guys are instead of where they ain’t.
He’s not striking out much, he’s getting his share of walks… how do you jam a guy who stands as far away from the dish as the rules allow, yet who also has an excellent command of the strike zone?
He’ll come around again and those balls that he’s hitting to people will start dropping. So long as he doesn’t get discouraged and try to fix something that isn’t broken.
Matt Diaz should be used in LF everytime Chipper doesn’t play and there is a LHP going against us. Diaz is on the roster for 1 reason only. To hit LHP, you keep running him out there until he can’t hit them anymore.
Juan Francisco should be used at 3B everytime Chipper doesn’t play and there is a RHP going against us. Francisco clearly cannot hit LHP, but mashes RHP.
This problem is gonna jump up and bite them in the butt sooner or later.
And you’ll be right there to brag about it
>>>>>>>>>>>>
Again, no. I’m pointing out the problems before they become problems. Preventive maintenance prevents breakdowns. Wren will probably address these problems before the all-star break. and should he not…then I’ll be all over his butt, like white on rice, like stink on dodo, like sharks in the water. Then again, if Wren fixes the minor leaks, then I’ll be the first to praise the man’s baseball acumen. p.s. Wren has got this pitching thing down to a science.
Prado plays 2nd, 3rd and LF (could play first, too). Francisco plays first, third and outfield. Hinske plays first and outfield. Diaz plays corner outfield and catches. Wilson plays short and third. Seems to me that we don’t really need a utility player/

“…..Al Simmons heating up…”
Don’t get me all excited now. He does that normally. A surge, then a swoon, then another surge. After several of those he begins hitting with consistancy.
I do think he’s surging stronger this year and at a higher level than he has in the past. Give him another month. By June 1 we ought to know what’s up with him in regard to being moved up or not.

Stat of the day:
The Braves’ bullpen has a 1.64 ERA over the last 12 games.
In that span, Medlen, Venters, O’Flaherty, and Durbin have combined to pitch 18.1 scoreless innings, with only 7 hits allowed, 7 walks, and 18 strikeouts.
Kimbrel has given up two runs in this interval (his only two runs of the season), and Hernandez and Martinez have given up five combined in 15 innings.

By contrast, there are nine division series for the team in July and August, nearly twice as many as the early season, and the Braves play more division games in September than the entire first third of the season.

Want some real criticism?
The back of our bench sucks balls. But we have known this for months and as long as our everyday starters stay healthy and productive, it won’t matter much. However, should the injury bug bite….the holes in this team will be big enough to drove a semi through.
