40th birthday surprises keeps coming for Jones

As fun as it was to homer against the Dodgers on his 40th birthday, Chipper Jones had a pretty nice birthday gift waiting at home too. His wife Sharon surprised him after a birthday dinner out with his family on Thursday night with keys to a brand new Ford F-150 pickup truck.

She got him too. Jones said she has given him 15 or 20 watches over all the years he’s known her. He thought that’s what was coming, when she gave him a small box in the car on the way to dinner, and then scolded him for shaking it to try to figure out what was inside.

“Opened it (at dinner), sure enough, Gucci box,” Jones said. “I’m like, ‘All right, just act surprised,’ and I looked in there. There was a key in there. I was like ‘nuh huh.’”

The new silver truck was waiting in the parking lot of the restaurant.

Jones took advantage of the day off Thursday to give his knee a rest as well. While it bothered him waking up after the cross-country flight, by Friday it felt “good enough” and he was back in the lineup.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he plans to rest Jones at least one game of the Pirates series.

“Sometime this weekend we’ll give him a breather,” Gonzalez said. “Play him two or three in a row, keep doing it that way. We want him productive, the whole year, on this team and this roster.”

How much is a new car a surprise when it’s your money that paid for it? I’m sure if Chipper wanted a F-150 he could have gotten one.

I love reading these stories about Chipper. I wonder the team did for him? I imagine it was pretty hilarious. They probably got him some depends and some ensure.

You guys are being to harsh on Chipper’s wife. She probably saved her pin money for months to buy that truck.

OK. Many professional athletes at the big-league level, including Chipper, make several times more each year than I will have made in my entire lifetime. They retire at or before 40, and I’m having to slog on until I’m at least 70. Still, keep in mind that they are paid at that level for a couple of reasons. First, they can do things most of us only dream about doing. Second, a huge number of us non-athletes are willing to pay to watch them play.

If you hate seeing Chipper – one of the best ever – make big bucks, just stop buying tickets, watching games on TV, and buying Braves paraphernalia. It’s you and I who make those salaries happen.

By the way, I truly don’t believe any human being is worth $13 million per year, but I enjoy watching Chipper immensely! I share in the enjoyment, and I share in the guilt.

Way to go Sharon. That was a great idea. I have always enjoyed watching him play baseball. The Atlanta Braves are my favorite. I live in Richmond, Virginia and we were the Richmond Braves. When I was 16 years old Henry Schwartzschild gave me my birthday party at Parker Field and all of the Richmond Braves signed my ball. I can remember it as it was yesterday. I played baseball myself and my number was 10. At that time I was a pitcher and #10 was the Richmond Braves pitcher, George Sumey. Some people are jealous over his success and finance. God bless and good luck to both of you.

Hey, don’t be hatin’ on Chipper for his success. It came at a price for him.

It makes little difference who earned the money, when you are a couple, it is a community thing. Ole Chipper is pretty grounded if you ask me, after all, he got a new truck…. Not a Lamborghini…

Earne- What do you think couples normally do when only one of them works? You think they just don’t give presents? Or that Chipper gives her a dollar every time she needs money? Nope, they share or she has a massive allowance. Oh and I bet chipper has better thinks to do than look at the Amex Black statement while he’s on a west coast swing

Gil and Pete are right, it is THEIR money.
If you don’t believe that, then I hope that you never have to find out how marriage works(or should I say, what happens when marriage doesn’t work), standing in front of a judge.
Go Chipper!
Go Braves!!!
