Braves quotes after Tuesday win over Dodgers

**CHIPPER JONES

On team being 11-2 on his birthday

“That’s good. Everybody gets as jacked up as I do to play on my birthday; that’s cool.”

Why do you think the record’s so good on your birthday

“I really couldn’t tell you. Probably luck more than anything else, but I’m fortunate today. I really wanted us to win this ballgame and make a series out of it. They took it to us pretty good last night. It’s good that we bounced back and won this ballgame.”

“I’m just glad to have the opportunity to go out there and play baseball at the age of 40. It’s been a fun ride, and it’s a good way to have my last birthday in the big leagues go, to have it come out the right way.”

On Pastornicky’s big game

“You could tell the kid was pressing a little bit. He’s got a million swing thoughts going through his mind. I just told him tonight, ‘Hey, just play. Go hit. Play the game. Play the best way you know how.’ And man, he got some results. It was good to see. He got a couple of big base hits for us tonight.

“All a kid like that needs is a little confidence, and hopefully a night like tonight will kind of propel him to do that.”

On Minor bouncing back after giving up the first-inning bomb

“He made one mistake. They bled some balls in off of him to get that third run, but he made mistake, Rivera made him pay for it. Got us in a hole, but he didn’t cave on us. He kept us in the ballgame until the bats were finally able to get to Harang. Can’t say enough about the job he’s done from Day 1 of spring training. I mean, he’s been our most consistent pitcher.”

On Prado’s big hit

“Prado is the consummate professional. He’s going to stand up there and grind out at-bats. And that was no easy task right there. That guy has dominant stuff. He had a long at-bat, fouled off some tough pitches and finally got one. To be honest with you I thought he had hit it out. But it’s like Yellowstone Park once the sun goes down here.

“But ultimately, I’ve gotten a lot of cool presents today and whatnot, but that was the best right there, that knock.”

**TYLER PASTORNICKY

On bouncing back with three-hit game, reached base four times

“It was nice. I’ve put in a lot of hard work in the last couple of days, and it’s nice to go out there and see some of the work that I have been doing pay off.”

Feeling more comfortable?

“I do. I think it was one of those things where I kind of put myself into that slump. I don’t think it was really anything physical that I changed or did. I think it was just kind of pressing. I swung the bat well the first week, then started to try to do too much after that. Instead of just going out there and letting it happen.”

On Chipper telling him before the game to  just play

“That’s the main part, just go out and do exactly that, not try to put so much stuff in my head.”

On capping his night by scoring winning run on Prado’s triple

“That was a great at-bat by Martin. It’s a good win for us, for sure.”

**MARTIN PRADO

On the win

“Mike kept us in the game and Chipper came up big for us and hit the homer. After that we kept playing inning by inning, at-bat by at-bat, everybody had great at-bats. I’m just glad I got a big hit to help the team. It was a big game.”

On his big triple on seven-pitch at-bat

“I was looking for a pitch. I know they were working me outside, and I was trying to hit the ball the other way and react inside. Fortunately for me, he threw a fastball a little bit up, but I could put a good swing on it.”

On Pastornicky’s breakout game

“I was so glad. We talk every day. We know how he’s capable of doing a lot of things in this game. After this game, I think from now on he’s going to be a different guy.”

On Kemp going after Prado’s drive to the wall

“He can get to anything. I knew it was either going to be a great play or I was going to get a hit. He made a great effort.”

On Braves’ comeback and last at-bat wins

“We’ve been doing it the last couple of years. Someboday steps up. For some reason we’ve got that strong mentality. They battle. We all battle. That’s the important thing about this team, we feel like we can do this even in tough situations.”

**MIKE MINOR

On settling down after the first-inning Rivera homer

“That was going to be the biggest thing, because they’re such a good-hitting team. To give up two runs like that early on, I was kind of pissed off about it. Because against a good-hitting team like that, you’ve got to try to limit those.

“Ellis got on with the broken-bat changeup hit, and then I just threw a terrible slider to Rivera. He did what he was supposed to do with that.”

On Pastornicky’s big night

“That was big. A lot of guys overlook the 8-hole, to get to the pitcher or the pinch-hitter off the bench. That’s big for the 8-hole guy to do that.”

***FREDI GONZALEZ

On Prado’s go-ahead triple

“That was a heck of an at-bat. Seven-pitch at-bat against their closer, and driving the ball all the way out there – in this ballpark at night, it’s well documented that the ball doesn’t travel real well here at night. One heck of an at-bat.

“Pastornicky had a tremendous day. Got on base four times, did a terrific job. Minor did a good job giving us six innings. I think he had 75, 77 pitches. You could run him back out there, but Medlen hadn’t pitched in six days, and O’Flaherty was rested. Why not take a chance there? Those guys did a terrific job.”

Chipper homering on his 40th birthday

“Maybe we can trick him again tomorrow and say it’s his birthday. He stands up on those occasions. Home run, and every at-bat he squared up the ball.

“It seems like every time we give him a couple of days to get that knee ready, he answers the call and gives us a good performance.”

On Pastornicky

“Young players, you’ve just got to let them relax a little bit. First month in the big leagues, sometimes it’s pretty overwhelming. So it was nice to see him come back, four times on base, three hits. Hopefuly that will carry him on and he’ll keep going.”

Hopefully this game gave a boost and enough confidence to Pastor.
Martin had a great at bat against the Dodger close but at the same time I think we were a bit lucky with Matt Kemp’s midjudged fielding.

But I’ll take any W for sure…
and want to see Danny’s clean throw to Freddie more often.. please.

Nice Win, Go Beachy tomorrow.
5-2 Road trip will be very nice.

I guess you can’t beat Fredi’s logic of using Medlen and O’Flaherty *rolls eyes*. Despite that good win great job taking advantage of mistakes. Also nice to see Pastornicky put up great ABs. What more can you say about Chipper too? The guy is amazing.

Typical Dodger game… Bunch of bleeders and broken bat hits. Hopefully tomorrow the holes won’t be found, but at least they put the bat on the ball I guess. Our team needs to learn a little bit of that… Still too many guys swinging for the fences. Good game though. We better win tomorrow else I gotta hear it from the LA fans here

In a good and close hard fought game like the one tonight, the winner is sometimes decided by who gets the breaks, and who takes advantage of mistakes made by their opponent.
That was the BRaves tonight, baby.
Good tough game, played by two good and tough teams, tonight.

I’ll say this Fredi Coached and showed fire tonight as well. All around a good night for Braves fan. Think about it the 3 main problems could have got addressed all within a span of 24 hours.

1. Jurrjens gets sent to AAA
2. Fredi Shows some fire and had that Kemp call changed to an out.
3. We got a REAL SS tonight it was Pastornicky

If we play like this and with Walker and Fletcher working wonders with the line up, Huddy coming back, Minor and Beachy looking like Aces. And of course the Best Bull-pen in baseball. We are dangerous.

The Nationals have been Lucky so far. But the real question will be in August and September with a lot of their starters having inning limits. Also The Nationals play the Dodgers this weekend in LA and we will see how good they really are.

If the more Fredi shows fire
The less people will want Fredi fired.
I want this Fredi to coach every game. I wanted the guy that sat Hanley Ramizez for hotdoggin it at SS. What I saw last year and a lot this year was him running Lowe every 5th game and Tippin his Cap in 2011. And in 2012 he Tipped his cap and sent Jurrjens out there every 5th day. Then something happened early Tuesday morning, He sent JJ down to Triple A, He take pastornicky off the bench after sitting him for underperforming, and he argued a bad call and showed some fire, then Pastornicky performs and the team fights back and wanted that game more than the Dodgers and went out there and won it. This is the Fredi I thougt we were getting in 2010. I want the Intense Fredi not the “Hat Tippin Fredi”

Great to see the Braves battle back for a win out West. Uggla needs to get it going. It’s like April 2011 for him, all over again. He’s working hard on defense, but he needs to know when to just stick the ball in his pocket.

Larry

Uggla, so infatuated with growing his Popeye arms, looks too tight and muscle bound both swinging and throwing. Notice how his swing follow-through ends lateral to his body versus a more fluid swing that finishes behind his back. Same with his throws where he has a tight, incomplete follow through.

He’s big enough and needs to work on toning a complete muscle versus isolated “pumping” to apex his biceps.

Armchairs gotta cry even when “we” are in the middle of a 4-2 west coast road trip… Fredi IS a big league manager (none of you, on the other hand, are), and he operates with information that NONE of you have… Let’s try it again: Choose between the two if you were an owner of a new team and you needed a manager… (1) Fredi Gonzalez, or (2) Larry, Moe, Curly, JMAN, or any of the other qualified baseball experts who are also psychics and soothsayers on the ajc blogs…… tough choice, there….

Since all of you legends in your own minds get all of your information and knowledge from a perch on your behind in front of the boob tube, and the camera breaks to a 1-5 second glimpse of Fredi maybe 4-5 times during a 2 1/2 – 3 hour telecast, how is it that you know what is going on all of the time with him in the dugout… C’mon, armchairs… please, for the sake of all of us who know so little, could you armchairs explain what you base your comments on? Give us ignoramuses an HONEST answer! PLEASE!!!

It was good to see the umps get the call right on Kemp’s ‘flinch’ toward second. Found it interesting that neither Joe or Chip noted that the first-base ump wasn’t even looking at Kemp when he made that move…by the way I’ve always understood that it didn’t matter if you turned ‘inside’ the foul line or not, just that you made a move as if you were going to try for second. Anybody know the ‘real’ rule? And Joe Simpson’s right, Uggla, and everybody else needs to stop making it so damn hard for Freeman at first…get those throws up guys.

Nice game…nice at bats…and it was nice to beat what appears to be a quality club.

What are the chances Chipper gets voted into the all star game in his final year? Giving him the chance to play the stadium.

How common is it that a player gets to play in every MLB Stadium? If chipper has played 18+ years and has yet to do it..

I would like to point out, that some of these folks favorite ‘kicking dog’ Dan Uggla, has hit the game winning RBI in two games so far this season.
He broke a 2-2 tie with the Snakes, with a 3rd inning HR. Braves win.
HE broke an 8-8 tie with the Brewers, with a 2RBI single in the 8th.Braves win.
As far as the Braves team is concerned, Uggla is
tied for 3rd in hits, RBI, and Ks.
tied for 2nd in ABs, and BBs.
tied for 1st in games played, runs scored, and HRs.
So, he may not have IT going as good as everyone would like, But he does have a little bit going on.
And this, despite having really big arms, that look like a normal person’s legs, and scruffy looking facial hair.

Ah, what a blissful legacy of legends on here…. alexis, you haven’t answered a reasonable question concerning your credentials yet – like your blog brethren won’t, or should I say, can’t at present – going on two seasons now nor have you learned to create your own comebacks when you do your slinging…. binkie time for baby… suckem’ if ya got ‘em!

J-MAN, next time you’re pouring over your statistics for your opinions (try thinking about the fact that statistics in baseball change in every at-bat like I supposed to you the other day… somewhere in those stats, a streak or a stretch is beginning or ending – I mean, 1 game has you on the Pastornicky bandwagon for now, at least until he goes 0-3 the next time – then it’ll be time for a demotion or one of those blockbuster trades you conjure up from time to time) get on to dictionary.com and look up the meaning of the term “armchair quarterback”, and convince me with some of your fact finding that finds that you and the rest of your lot are not, in fact, armchairs… You do seem to be much more of a fan than the other armchairs (who I believe to be much more malicious than you – you, at least, don’t stoop to calling the players on your team names because they don’t live up to the ideal that they will go 3-4 or pitch a shut-out every time out, like the pseudo-fan armchairs do when “their” teamates somehow let them down… I respect your genuine fandom….

I am a fan, period… have been since they moved here… Just like I wouldn’t lambaste a child for failing, but trying, I won’t lambaste the players on “my” team when they fail in a game that is set up for failure most of the time – I, for one, believe that every player on the Braves loves being there, and find it hard to fathom that they would play in any game without trying their heart out… I realize that a matter on millimeters on contact, or a singular pebble in the infield, or the glare of the lights could be the difference in a hit or an out… I realize that there is only so much strategy in playing a game that every single manager uses the same ones, and they are called gutsy geniuses or idiot clowns, depending on how their call is executed by the player…… I realize that even the best pitchers can be off just that silly little millimeter (there goes that term again) and have it affect their success (even Sandy Koufax got battered every now and then)…. I realize that to make it to the big leagues, you have to be a very exceptional ballplayer (any of whom in the majors is so far ahead of all of these bloggers put together in knowledge of and ability to play the game that some of these comments are just pure inanity)… Clue in, armchairs… there isn’t a player in the majors, down to the lowliest bench player, that doesn’t excel at the game… performance issues are one thing, but they ALL can play ball…

But most of all, I realize that baseball is a streaky thing, played out in a long season, and there is NOTHING I can do, or cry like a baby about, that will have an iota of effect on the team I root for… and that’s what I do… I root for the Braves like I would root for my son, and cheer them on when they do well or urge them to keep their chins up when they don’t… Some folks on here act as if it is a personal affront to them because some player had an off night and the Braves lost… Why, why get upset over things that aren’t anyway in your control….

Yup, call me the disparager of disparagers.. they deserve it… the players, on the other hand, do not, especially when it comes from one who neither plays the game at that level nor has not a lick of experience in running a team…
