Can Fredi produce a lineup and leave it alone and let the players get some sense of consistency? Put Heyward in the 3 hole and leave him there unless he proves over a longer period of time that he is not ready for that spot yet. Chipper will be making cameo appearances all season long. Don’t automatically slot him into the third spot when those occur — just put him in Francisco’s spot when he plays. Heyward’s high OBP is wasted so low in the order when Pastor and the pitcher are up in the positions to try to drive him in.
April 19th, 20126:50 pm
We’ll be lucky to get 80 games from him and that’s just not good enough considering his salary.
80 is better than 30. At this point, Chipper will give us what he has. His contract is a moot point as he’ll get paid regardless. I’d rather get 80 games like the ones we’ve had, rather than have him riding the pine with a season ending injury from trying to overdo it.
April 19th, 20126:55 pm
…that’s just not good enough considering his salary.
So what do you suggest the Braves do about it? You get what you can from Chipper. Not his fault the knee won’t work the way he wants. I mean, MY knee tends to ache after I fly anywhere, and I’ve never had surgery on it, let alone 6…

JJ has me worried…being a spawn of Boras, I’d say trade him by All-Star game if he doesn’t improve
April 19th, 20127:03 pm
cab – That was a fisr statement. I love Chipper, but we (The Team) aren’t going to get value from him this year. I am aware of it and it is what it is. Some folks are upset because he isn’t really a full time player anymore.
I think (so far anyway) that Francisco can fill in nicely. But some folks will bemoan Chipper for what will be a 100-110 game season – pending no new injuries.
And the Braves can do nothing. It is Chippers call.
April 19th, 20127:04 pm
April 19th, 20127:08 pm
Don’t the Braves fly solo aka team only?? Why can’t Chipper take a whole row of seats (3) and keep his leg/knee elevated w/ ice on it during the trip??
April 19th, 20127:09 pm
It has been easy to be critical of some of Fredi’s pitching decisions, but yesterday you have to hand it to him for having guts. He made the decision to avoid using EOF, Venters, and Kimbrel in games where the team was ahead by more than 3 runs, and stuck with it despite seeing Durbin load the bases with a 4 run lead in the 7th. I guess he figured that these guys are being paid to handle this role and had the guts to trust that they were able to do the job hired for. I’m sure there will be dissenting opinions on the wisdom of his stand, but you have to admire his guts in a vary testy set of situations.
I have to disagree that the team is not going to get value from Chipper this year. He’s already shown that he provides plenty of value, whether it’s off the bench or in the starting lineup. Is he going to play 140 games? No. But the 110-120 or whatever he plays will be good enough for me, and I can almost guarantee he will be a valuable contributor. I just get tired of folks complaining about his salary and think he no longer deserves a spot on the team, or the Braves should…do something with him (it is never clear what they want done) or whatever.
April 19th, 20127:16 pm
I was thinking the same thing. As someone who is 6′4″” mostly in the legs, flying coach, hauling luggage, and fighting to find carry-on baggage space is pure hell, but I assume pro athletes fly first class, are relieved of all baggage concerns, and have ample leg room and an ability to walk around the cabin. Chipper would also have a team trainer to help take the necessary precautions to protect the knee. I wouldn’t think he would have the same experience flying that most of the rest of us have to endure.
April 19th, 20127:21 pm
Guys, you can take all the precautions in the world (and I know Chipper taped his knee up and I’m sure he iced and did other things) but sometimes, the knee just swells. Happens all the time. Many years ago, my mother broke her ankle while we were in Hawaii. The doctor refused to cast it in a hard cast because, despite the medications and the wrapping and the icing he told her to do, he was concerned it would swell up painfully on the flight home. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable…

April 19th, 20127:31 pm
cab – Yeap, I understand what you are saying. He will contribute what he can…whne he can.
But I can also understand the folks that complain when he isn’t in the lineup every night.
But he can’t. If he could, he would.
I feel it will be a long season for Chipper and I hate to see it.
He is truley day-to-day.
And when he doesn’t start, he can PH. Came in handy the last game.
Great post at 7:09. I’m amazed at how the entire scope of the game changes when Chipper is in there. It’s money well spent whatever his salary.
April 19th, 20127:34 pm
If they force him to retire, they would have the money to get you a good player.
April 19th, 20127:37 pm
And how do you propose they “force” Chipper to retire?
April 19th, 20127:40 pm
Throw him under the bus like they do everyone else.
#Braves Chipper had some knee swelling after long flight, but not as bad as last time. Doesn’t need it drained and expects to play Fri. 59 mins ago
April 19th, 20127:42 pm
April 19th, 20127:44 pm
Say what you want,I still enjoy seeing #10 come in to PH …..
April 19th, 20127:51 pm
Chipper’s knee swelled a little bit again after the flight. Not nearly as bad as last time, won’t need to get it drained and expects to play tomorrow. Available to pinch-hit tonight.
Fortunately for Braves and him, only a couple more flights as long as this one this year, where there’s a game next day. There’s an off day after flight back from L.A., which should help.
Waste of money. Money could get you a good player. Not a broken down has been.
April 19th, 20127:53 pm
April 19th, 20127:54 pm
Playing with the roof and windows open tonight at hot, breezy Chase Field
April 19th, 2012
I will happily keep said has been…..Chipper is getting paid rather he plays or not(and has earned every penny). You may as well give it a rest.
April 19th, 20127:58 pm
You dont. How about JJ,Durbin,Hernandez,Diaz. You want them out. Why not your highest paid player who does nothing?
April 19th, 20128:01 pm
Why not your highest paid player who does nothing?
Because he does a lot more than “nothing” And again- he’s not quitting midseason, the Braves can’t (nor would they ever think of) “forcing” hime to retire, they can’t (and won’t because it’s a stupid thought) cut him…
April 19th, 20128:03 pm
Jurrjens used to be a solid #2 starter, imo. Never thought he was more than that, even at his best. However, I don’t think I’d ever call him an adequate #3 starter at best, as Shaun did.
April 19th, 20128:04 pm
Then quit complaining about not having enogh money to sign players. Go with what you got and be patient. If you can?
Lynchburg’s RHP J.R. Graham(2011 4th round pickout of Santa Clara) with 7 IP, 6 hits allowed, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K’s tonight.
April 19th, 20128:05 pm
I’ve never complained about not having money to sign players.
I just got my Authentic Chipper Jones jersey…..
April 19th, 20128:07 pm
Bring back train travel
Fire the Wright brothers!
April 19th, 20128:09 pm
A lot of so called Brave fans do it all the time.
High-A Lynchburg squad looks pretty good: CF Matt Lipka, C Evan Gattis, 3B Ed Salcedo, 2B Tommy La Stella, SS Nick Ahmed for position players to keep an eye on. RHP’s J.R. Graham, Cody Martin, and Aaron Northcraft too.
April 19th, 20128:10 pm
But I don’t, so why direct that comment at me?
April 19th, 20128:12 pm
According to the article Mac may have saved over 79 runs for the Braves over the last 4 seasons with his pitch framing….SB
now that just caint be possible, everybody knows that Brian is the worst catcher in baseball
April 19th, 20128:13 pm
To be honest, I was hoping Chipper would retire this past spring like Mickey did in 1969. The knees just wouldn’t let him play.Like it or nor, Chipper in the same situation.
But he decided to give it one more go. Alright, he deserves that option, but I can also understand those who moan. (Not Whiskey – that’s not rational).
I’ll take him in is current role, but it feels odd to wait on the lineup just to see if Chipper is playing. I’m used to him being there everyday.
I’d be saying the same thing if Uggla was having these issues.
On a brighter note, I see the Braves raking tonight. The D-backs starter has been beat around during his two starts this year.
Love you cab.
Later good folks.
April 19th, 20128:14 pm
It’s been fun. Later!
We lost a great one tonight in Levon Helm RIP……….
April 19th, 20128:15 pm
This is why I didn’t wet myself in excitement like the Braves commentators did when Chipper was about to return. You knew he would miss a few games a week anyways.
Cab is 1 of the most patient/supportive fans on this blog,I cannot think of a more supportive blogger.
April 19th, 20128:16 pm
I’m happy Chipper went for one more season. Part of me is happy he announced that he was leaving early in spring training, so it was less of a shocker than if he did it next fall and I wasn’t able to soak it in as a big fan of his.
Do any of you know a website where someone can watch the game online tonight? Got a friend in Atlanta that needs the feed…
April 19th, 20128:17 pm
Y’all know CHIPPER is my fav player and after he is gone I don’t believe I will continue to follow BRAVES. At this point I can understand people complaining about how much he can play, he has missed more than he has played, I believe he has played 5 games, PHing in one of those.
April 19th, 20128:18 pm
Its not at youcompletely. Its at all of you. You have a very good Brave team. Be patient and quit complaining. They could have a 50 game lead and everyone would still complain. Love your team. Support your team and quit complaining.
April 19th, 20128:20 pm
Again, you are directing those comments at completely the wrong person. As Bravefaninok so kindly pointed out, I don’t complain, I don’t post negative comments, and I have been accused more than once of being too positive. I support this team no matter what.
I can only remember one stretch of bad times behind the plate with McCann. Maybe around late 2010 he was having a tough time, but other than that he’s solid. Strong arm, not very accurate, but moreso than in his first few years.
I’m a scout – blog scout. Watch out
April 19th, 20128:22 pm
Got to be killing Chipper not being able to play tonight.
April 19th, 20128:24 pm
The elephant in the room, that Bobby Cox wont let out is Leo Mazzone!!!
Sounds good to me. Teach the rest of your clowns to do the same.
McFann :Ô: :Ô:
April 19th, 20128:25 pm
nolie now that just caint be possible, everybody knows that Brian is the worst catcher in baseball
I know, right? Sometimes these professionals, I tell ya…
cab is the very best of BRAVES fans. It is a pleasure to know her, even if only on the blog.
April 19th, 20128:27 pm
Levon Helm doing The Weight recently with some really cool people including Rosanne Cash and The Civil Wars
April 19th, 20128:30 pm
I am talking about her in general. Its all of you.If you are not complaining at the Braves, you are complaining at people you do not like. Or maybe each other. Come on people the good man upstairs says to love everyone. I sure dont see it in this group.
April 19th, 20128:31 pm
Thanks Cab. I wanted to make sure we were still good. You are one of the good ones on here.
VJ and Whiskey are losers.
Got to go, but I’ll catch the game in an hour or so.
I feel a good win tonight!! In fact, I call a massive offensive game for the Braves. 8 -10 runs.
I can even see Durbin getting a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th.
(Really) Later good folks.
April 19th, 20128:33 pm
Like someone else wrote, I can’t understand why CHIPPER can’t fly with leg in raised position to keep swelling down.
Well, if you are going to talk about VJ like that, we may not be good for long…
April 19th, 20128:34 pm
Like I said earlier, you can take every precaution available, but sometimes, you can’t prevent the knee from swelling
If flying makes knee swell, solution GreyHound.
April 19th, 20128:37 pm
Waste of money. Money could get you a good player. Not a broken down has been. Whiskey River
I’d be a lot more impressed with that statement if you were smart enough to make it in 2010 when he signed the contract.
Take what you need and you leave the rest.
But they should never have taken the very beeeeeeesssssst!
GreyHound not fast enough to get him to games and more champed space than planes. lol
April 19th, 20128:39 pm
just a regular Chipper ripper under another name
April 19th, 20128:40 pm
May we win by a CHIPPER PH HR tonight.

Rig a hyperbaric chamber on the Braves charter?
April 19th, 20128:42 pm
Well you children take care of each other. I am going to watch my Braves play a baseball game without complaining about a thing. Take care. Go Braves
April 19th, 20128:43 pm
I really like tonights lineup, keep rolling braves.
Well outta here, my Manchester Terrier Peanut tells me it is overtime for his walk. At 9:35 it will be TIME, lets have a good one tonight y’all.
smacks self in head
April 19th, 20128:47 pm
Greyhound is not the answer for Cripper, he probably has one of those 3 million dollar motor homes.
April 19th, 20128:49 pm
Levon Helm, Roger Waters, Van Morrison, Rick Danko and company performing Comfortably Numb in 1990.
April 19th, 20128:54 pm
minor wants to be taken seriously he needs to step up and pitch another good game in a row
April 19th, 20129:01 pm
Moylan signed a minor league contract with braves.
April 19th, 20129:06 pm
DOB, with the way Chippers knee has started this season, how many games do you see him playing this year (as long as no more DL time). Seems like he wont be able to play more than 2-3 in a row. Is this a worry or do braves hope Fransisco/Prado can lift when he isnt in the lineup?
April 19th, 20129:10 pm
I want to be taken seriously too.
April 19th, 20129:11 pm
The DVD playing on the visitor’s clubhouse TV this afternoon: “Dumb and Dumber.”
You better pitch another good one in a row dude
April 19th, 20129:13 pm
Game is getting close. Great timing.
Quit being such a debbie downer, ok!
The “long flight aggravates my [insert injury]” line always works.
April 19th, 20129:14 pm
Please tell all your friends to quit being so negative. The man upstairs is watching! (is that the Man upstairs, or John Schuerholz he’s talking about?)

I think everyone is.
April 19th, 20129:18 pm
After the third or fourth game this year, some of us were lobbying for her to make up the nightly lineups instead of Fredi.
April 19th, 20129:19 pm
Glad i am not alone….lol
When was that Brian? (Huddy looking tired?) Right after he had pitched? Might explain it.
April 19th, 20129:24 pm
I kinda wish Fredi were a tad less unpredictable with his lineups. I think I’d leave Jason in the 3 slot when Chipper is out.
I’d sure love to see him hit Chipper in the 2 slot with Heyward, Mac, Uggla, Freeman, Prado and then Pastonicky in that order. Then when Chipper sits, just shift everybody up 1 level and plug in Francisco or Diaz in right above The Rev.
And then leave it alone.
April 19th, 20129:31 pm
The long flight to Az (4 hours) disturbed the fragile equilibrium of one Chipper Jones. Must have been a kind of reverse “bends” experienced by scuba diver that surfaced too fast. Maybe they should put him in an compression chamber, see what happens.
One Big Dummy
Wow, that National Anthem was so bad my ears are bleeding!
April 19th, 20129:32 pm
endless supply of fake, fake names ain’t there?
April 19th, 20129:33 pm
Says the guy called “nolie”
April 19th, 20129:34 pm
no doubt….. but mine is definitely not fake. My family calls me DS1.
“cabravesfan” is, of course, my real name. You should see the looks I get at the DMV…
April 19th, 20129:35 pm
Is Josh ‘Collender’ gonna sift through our lineup and drain it of its potency?
