Braves among early NL leaders in hitting, not pitching

Can Fredi produce a lineup and leave it alone and let the players get some sense of consistency? Put Heyward in the 3 hole and leave him there unless he proves over a longer period of time that he is not ready for that spot yet. Chipper will be making cameo appearances all season long. Don’t automatically slot him into the third spot when those occur — just put him in Francisco’s spot when he plays. Heyward’s high OBP is wasted so low in the order when Pastor and the pitcher are up in the positions to try to drive him in.

We’ll be lucky to get 80 games from him and that’s just not good enough considering his salary.

80 is better than 30. At this point, Chipper will give us what he has. His contract is a moot point as he’ll get paid regardless. I’d rather get 80 games like the ones we’ve had, rather than have him riding the pine with a season ending injury from trying to overdo it.

…that’s just not good enough considering his salary.

So what do you suggest the Braves do about it? You get what you can from Chipper. Not his fault the knee won’t work the way he wants. I mean, MY knee tends to ache after I fly anywhere, and I’ve never had surgery on it, let alone 6…

cab – That was a fisr statement. I love Chipper, but we (The Team) aren’t going to get value from him this year. I am aware of it and it is what it is. Some folks are upset because he isn’t really a full time player anymore.

I think (so far anyway) that Francisco can fill in nicely. But some folks will bemoan Chipper for what will be a 100-110 game season – pending no new injuries.

And the Braves can do nothing. It is Chippers call.

Don’t the Braves fly solo aka team only?? Why can’t Chipper take a whole row of seats (3) and keep his leg/knee elevated w/ ice on it during the trip??

It has been easy to be critical of some of Fredi’s pitching decisions, but yesterday you have to hand it to him for having guts. He made the decision to avoid using EOF, Venters, and Kimbrel in games where the team was ahead by more than 3 runs, and stuck with it despite seeing Durbin load the bases with a 4 run lead in the 7th. I guess he figured that these guys are being paid to handle this role and had the guts to trust that they were able to do the job hired for. I’m sure there will be dissenting opinions on the wisdom of his stand, but you have to admire his guts in a vary testy set of situations.

Jimmy-

I have to disagree that the team is not going to get value from Chipper this year. He’s already shown that he provides plenty of value, whether it’s off the bench or in the starting lineup. Is he going to play 140 games? No. But the 110-120 or whatever he plays will be good enough for me, and I can almost guarantee he will be a valuable contributor. I just get tired of folks complaining about his salary and think he no longer deserves a spot on the team, or the Braves should…do something with him (it is never clear what they want done) or whatever.

Dr. Ken,
I was thinking the same thing. As someone who is 6′4″” mostly in the legs, flying coach, hauling luggage, and fighting to find carry-on baggage space is pure hell, but I assume pro athletes fly first class, are relieved of all baggage concerns, and have ample leg room and an ability to walk around the cabin. Chipper would also have a team trainer to help take the necessary precautions to protect the knee. I wouldn’t think he would have the same experience flying that most of the rest of us have to endure.

cabravesfan

Guys, you can take all the precautions in the world (and I know Chipper taped his knee up and I’m sure he iced and did other things) but sometimes, the knee just swells. Happens all the time. Many years ago, my mother broke her ankle while we were in Hawaii. The doctor refused to cast it in a hard cast because, despite the medications and the wrapping and the icing he told her to do, he was concerned it would swell up painfully on the flight home. Sometimes, it’s unavoidable…

cab – Yeap, I understand what you are saying. He will contribute what he can…whne he can.
But I can also understand the folks that complain when he isn’t in the lineup every night.

But he can’t. If he could, he would.

I feel it will be a long season for Chipper and I hate to see it.
He is truley day-to-day.

And when he doesn’t start, he can PH. Came in handy the last game.

Chipper’s knee swelled a little bit again after the flight. Not nearly as bad as last time, won’t need to get it drained and expects to play tomorrow. Available to pinch-hit tonight.

Fortunately for Braves and him, only a couple more flights as long as this one this year, where there’s a game next day. There’s an off day after flight back from L.A., which should help.

Because he does a lot more than “nothing” And again- he’s not quitting midseason, the Braves can’t (nor would they ever think of) “forcing” hime to retire, they can’t (and won’t because it’s a stupid thought) cut him…

To be honest, I was hoping Chipper would retire this past spring like Mickey did in 1969. The knees just wouldn’t let him play.Like it or nor, Chipper in the same situation.

But he decided to give it one more go. Alright, he deserves that option, but I can also understand those who moan. (Not Whiskey – that’s not rational).

I’ll take him in is current role, but it feels odd to wait on the lineup just to see if Chipper is playing. I’m used to him being there everyday.

I’d be saying the same thing if Uggla was having these issues.

On a brighter note, I see the Braves raking tonight. The D-backs starter has been beat around during his two starts this year.

Go Barves!!

Love you cab. :-)

I’d sure love to see him hit Chipper in the 2 slot with Heyward, Mac, Uggla, Freeman, Prado and then Pastonicky in that order. Then when Chipper sits, just shift everybody up 1 level and plug in Francisco or Diaz in right above The Rev.
