(Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien Saturday and Sunday.)
So it’s the calm after the home-opener. Great crowd for Friday night’s wild win over the Brewers, 10-8, of 50,635, but now we settle into the heart of the Brewers series, and still get the red-and-white bunting too, and maybe a little shorter lines on the concession stands (I hear they were a little nutty.)
The Braves are breaking out the new cream-colored, throwback style, uniforms for Saturday and then it’s back to the home whites with “42s” for Jackie Robinson day on Sunday. Sunday is the 65th anniversary of Robinson breaking the color barrier, so the players and coaches will wear his “42” for the occasion. But going forward the Braves will be in the cream throwbacks on home Saturdays and Sundays.
For those who missed the big reveal in February, the new uniforms are reminiscent of the ones the Braves wore in 1966 and 1967, with “Braves” across the chest and the jersey numbers below, as well as on the back. They also feature a new crossed tomahawk logo on the left sleeve.
I’d expect Chipper Jones to take another day off Saturday to rest his knee and return to the lineup Sunday against left-hander Chris Narveson. He got his knee drained during the game Friday night – 45cc of fluid (ick!) – and was immediately feeling better. But he was thinking chances were probably 30-70 that he would be back in there Saturday. So we’ll see.
So now do you put Juan Francisco back in the lineup against the right-handed Shaun Marcum? The young third baseman struggled mightily in his last start, committing three errors in Monday’s game 8-3 loss to the Astros, including two on one costly play. He’s got to get back on the horse some time, but the Braves are already playing rookie Tyler Pastornicky at shortstop and could use some sure hands on the left side of the infield. At the plate, Francisco is 1-for-10 so far as a Brave, 1-for-3 vs. lefties, and 0-for-7 vs. righties.
Starters lagging
Seven games into the season entering Saturday, no Braves starter had pitched more than five innings. It’s early, yes, but the trend is fairly troublesome. Jair Jurrjens tried on Friday night, pitching into the sixth inning, but he managed just a “plus” on the end of his five innings, as he allowed three consecutive hits, including a two-run Corey Hart double, and that was it for him.
“As a group, we’ve been struggling,” Jurrjens said. “We’re not really doing our job by eating innings. We need to step it up and try to help these guys in the bullpen. It’s the first month and we’re using them too much already. As a starting group we need to step it up and try to eat some innings and try to go deeper in the game.”
It’s up to Mike Minor on Saturday and Brandon Beachy on Sunday to try to remedy that.
The weird thing for Jurrjens Friday night was that his velocity was finally up, but he still gave up five runs in five innings. He touched 92 mph with his fastball in the first inning to strike out Ryan Braun.
“That’s why I said it’s hard to swallow my performance because I felt really good,” Jurrjens said. “I felt the ball was coming really good out of my hand. I’m just happy we won. It would be a hard one if we had lost. I don’t think I would have slept if we had lost this game.”
DOB came up with a great stat Friday, that while the Braves had the fewest innings from their starting pitchers (29 1/3 entering the Brewers series) of any major league team, the Braves didn’t have a single reliever among the 34 with at least four appearances before Friday.
As of Saturday, the Braves were still getting the fewest innings from their starters of any major league team (34 1/3), and Kris Medlen, Eric O’Flaherty, and Jonny Venters had joined a group of 69 relievers with four or more appearances. But none were in that group of 17 relievers with five or more appearances. (The Marlins’ Steve Cishek and Oakland’s Grant Balfour were leading the way with six appearances; 15 others have five appearances.)
O’Flaherty is one guy who’s been fighting it here recently, as evidenced with the three runs he gave up in the seventh on Friday which allowed the Brewers to tie it 8-8.
O’Flaherty certainly set the bar high for himself with a 0.98 ERA last year, the lowest in major league history for a pitcher with 75 or more appearances (78). But after giving up only eight earned runs all last year (in 73 2/3 innings), he’s given up four in the past two games and four in his 3 2/3 innings overall.
Fredi Gonzalez said last night he remembered O’Flaherty having a few issues early last year as well, and it was something pitching coach Roger McDowell would get into the video room and work on to iron out. Just looked back at his numbers last year, and O’Flaherty did get hit quite a bit early, but the overall damage wasn’t close. He gave up 11 hits in his first 11 2/3 innings over 12 games last year but only two earned runs for a 1.54 ERA. Through four games this year, he’s given up four runs for a 9.82 ERA.
Brewers and the former Braves
Shortstop Alex Gonzalez will miss both Saturday’s and Sunday’s games against the Braves while on paternity leave. His wife, pregnant with their third child, was supposed to be induced on Sunday. Congratulations to the Gonzalez family. Eric Farris is coming from AAA Nashville to replace him on the roster.
It’s probably good news for the Braves, who watched Gonzalez go 2-for-4 with a two-run home run off Jurrjens on Friday night.
I didn’t get a chance to talk to Gonzalez yesterday, which is a shame, but he told Guy Curtright from MLB.com this: “I liked Atlanta. Good teammates, good fans, good team. But I’m happy. I’m glad to be with the Brewers. We have a playoff team. I’m excited about the season.”
I did get some scoop on our old friend Brooks Conrad from the Brewers’ illustrious beat writer Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. As you might recall, Conrad signed a minor league deal with the Brewers this winter after it was clear the Braves weren’t going to bring him back. Well, Tom says Conrad was the last guy cut from the team coming out of spring training with the Brewers, after losing out a bench spot to Travis Ishikawa.
Unfortunately for Conrad, he also jammed his shoulder sliding into base in his last game of spring training, so currently he is on the 7-day DL in Triple-A Nashville.
Javy Lopez autobiography

Javy Lopez (left) was back in camp this spring
I just started reading Javy Lopez’s autobiography “Behind the Plate,” written with former AJC and ChopTalk editor Gary Caruso, and it’s been an interesting read so far. I’ve known Javy probably since 1993 or 1994, and he’s always been a nice guy, a soft-spoken guy. And while he spoke English really well by the time he came into his own with the Braves, I never felt like I really knew what was going on in his head quite like some of the other players because of his personality and the language barrier. So I’m enjoying getting that chance now with this book.
I’m only three chapters in and already I’ve learned some nuggets I didn’t know, like Lopez used to wear his baseball uniform under his school clothes so he wouldn’t be late for practice as a kid. That his father was embarrassed about his signing bonus with the Braves, coming out of Puerto Rico, so they lied about the amount, saying it was $90,000 when it was really $37,000.
I also learned that Javy’s ex-wife got rid of the balls from his first hit and first home run, and that the day he got called up in 1992 was also the first time he went to a major league game.
Anyway, some interesting stuff and a good read for all the Lopez fans out there.
Eye on Gwinnett
The Gwinnett Braves won Friday night to make that five in a row now. They got Julio Teheran back on track Thursday, with five shutout innings, and Jose Constanza had three triples in three games.
Sunday lineup:
1. Bourn CF
2. Prado LF
3. Jones 3B
4. McCann C
5. Uggla 2B
6. Freeman 1B
7. Heyward RF
8. Pastornicky SS

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you’ve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you’ve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
And everybody knows that it’s now or never
Everybody knows that it’s me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when you’ve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe’s still pickin’ cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it’s moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But there’s gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows
And everybody knows that you’re in trouble
Everybody knows what you’ve been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach of Malibu
Everybody knows it’s coming apart
Take one last look at this Sacred Heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows
Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
That’s how it goes
Everybody knows

like I said before, our bullpen is on pace to pitch 648 innings, and although I know that won’t happen, it should jar a few heads into realizing how quickly the numbers can get out of hand.
Out starting pitching is the KEY to success. How they roll is how the team follows suit. But yea, our offense is on the ball. Looking forward to seeing the new/old uni’s tonight.

The truth is Maddux was already a star when he came to the braves, Mazzone developed Glavine and Smoltz into great pitchers. With his tough workout program he prevented any of them from breaking down. After he left Smoltz and Glavine developed arm problems because they stopped using his workout programs. For fourteen years the braves had no major arm problems, the last six years, major arm problems every year.

I’ve also noticed that JHey has his hands too high. When he drops his hands his head moves, which has him pulling off the ball through the hitting zone. If he’d level out his hands to start with, when he strides forward his head would be still and he wouldn’t pull off the pitch. Then, as he flies through the hitting zone, the rotation of his hips would precede his hands thus generating more power while staying on the pitch. Someone like Don Baylor would notice this, but the Braves don’t seem to be paying attention. When I was pitching, I’d always dial back the curveball a little whenever I noticed this flaw. I’d get the hitter to pull off the ball and hit a weak popup.

One final note on last night’s game. I’d like to have a side session with Jair so that I could show him how his hips are flying open before he plants his left foot. That’s putting stress on his shoulder and taking mph’s off his fastball because his rotation through the arm slot is not fluid. I see a strained hip flexor or a pulled oblique in his future. Back when I was pitching, even catchers would pick up on this tendency. It’s too bad the Braves don’t have anyone who can coach Jurrjens through this mechanical breakdown.

Freeman was tearing it up until Walker started trying to get him to pull the ball, Fredi doesn’t like to pull, last year when he was in a slump he said he was pull happy and had to start hitting up the middle. Freeman’s problem is that he drinks skim milk. The nutrients in skim milk contaminate his eosinophil granulocytes so he is susceptible to multicellular parasites. It’s pretty obvious that he is not storing enough secondary granule proteins. Back when I was playing, Coach would always make us drink whole milk. I can’t believe none of the coaches have picked up on this.

I think we all saw Brian Wilson heading for trouble. He clearly has mechanical issues that the Giants failed to address. He elbow takes a beating with each pitch because his stride is inadequate to support the torque generated by his forward inertia and secondary mandibular physiosis. Any rookie could see it coming.

I still have resentment towards Joe Simpson. I went to the Braves caravan stop in Athens and wanted his autograph. He was looking at golf stuff prior to the event starting and I asked him if he would please sign. I was near the front of the line. Joe got up maybe 10 minutes into the event and left. Funny story yesterday I was watching batting practice in center field. A man in his mid 40s really wanted a ball and had been begging Brandon Beachy throughout BP. He got no ball. Finally he said Brandon I didn’t want to resort to this and he lifted up his shirt. Someone else told Beachy they would change their last name to Beachy. Someone said I’ll give you $10 for that ball and Beachy said I think I can get more than that. Just thought I would share and oh by the way I caught a bp home run yesterday off the bat of a brewer.

I wondered about it. The only possible explanation I have come up with is that Lucroy was out on a FC. So Lucroy being on the basepaths in some way contributed to the other guy not making an out and, subsequently, scoring. Probably someone will verify this.
Venice Jim

The unearned run was Minor’s by transference. Venters could have thrown to first to get his own runner rather than home to get Minor’s runner. They call it transference. (per Carroll)

A minor gripe about Fredi – if he had used Medlen for 2 innings yesterday, he could’ve gotten by with using only one of EOF or Venters yesterday. And he could’ve used the other today. Medlen’s second inning wouldve been against RHH and so EOF didnt have any inherent advantage. Just some ways he can save the 3 arms at the end. How he uses the bullpen tomorrow is going to be interesting.

Well, EOF’s first inning was all that good the previous time either. So if we are going by the pattern of just 1 previous appearance, its a silly point.
Didnt Fredi go to lengths to explain Medlen’s bullpen role as being important because of the multi-inning thing? Abandon it because of 1 bad inning!

And we got a win, and unfortunately I missed tonight’s (last night) game but I did see the 9th which sucked and then became awesome.
Can’t believe I missed a Braves pitcher go more than six innings. That’s like a once in a lifetime occurance.
Mike Minor’s my boy though. Hopefully we see more of that in the near future.
Safe to say, disaster effectively diverted. The Braves were perilously close to disqualifying themselves for the playoffs. For real though.
Two more losses and it would have been ovah! No team has ever overcome an 0-6 start and made the playoffs.
Zero. Doesn’t matter how good the Red Sox were for the majority of the 2011 season.
Didn’t make it.
The Braves odds have gone up considerably.
Winning is better than losing. That’s just me right there.

Minor’s location tonight was spot on… worthy of a No. 1 pick. Probably never will be the ace of the staff, but a solid 3-4 guy and if you get this out of Minor 5-7 times a year it will keep the Braves in contention.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Another sad underestimation of the talent garnered in Mike Minor. As Minor’s best pitch is still his fastball at this point in his career. His heater regularly sits at 91-93 but it’s Minor’s pin point control and accuracy, which distinctly reminds me of another young underrated lefty early in his career.
That kid’s name…..Tom Glavine. Although, Glavine’s best pitch was his change up at the start of Tommy’s pitching career. So their repertoire is different. However, the similarities are startling. Both are of course lefty’s, both feature solid command of four pitches, both have that stone cold demeanor on the mound, and last but not least. Excellent command of the strike zone.
Neither Glavine or Minor throw particularly hard and they don’t have too, as both rely on their ability to paint the corners. Which is why Glavine was underrated at the start of his career, and so is Minor.

Minor is a very good pitcher and a lot of you here don’t belive that because of how the management handled him over the last few years. He was constantly being sent down and brought up and this created an illusion that he wasn’t good enough. He also had to battle last year and this year for starters spot. He shouldn;t have been battling Teheran or Delgado. Those two are not even in the same league as Minor. You can undersand why Minor wanted a trade if he wasnt going to make it as a starter this spring. The guy knows he is good and I always belived in Minor
He has a ceiling of being a number 2 starter. Minor probably has same ceiling as Tommy Hanson.

RHRP and DSL grad ERNESTO SILVERA [2.75 ERA] 3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 4 SO. Not terrible, not great. BRAVES management many have found his limit in long relief at three innings because he breezed through three.

3 stars of the game: 1 – Mike Minor for pitching a gem, 2 – Juan (not to be confused with Don) Francisco for hammering the game-winning double, and 3 – Umpire Bill Welke for his kick save (and a beauty) allowing McCann to chug home. As for the offense, once again MIA (and I don’t mean weekending in South Beach).

Especially if I can’t get Peachtree on an antenna out here in Dville (I live in a valley area of my ‘hood, so it might not work). DOB,
Do you think Kimbrel will be made unavailable this afternoon? Considering that he’s pitched four games in a row, his performance last night included two walks and a hit (along with a well-hit ball by Corey Hart for the first out), the Braves have already won the series, and the Braves don’t have a day off for another week and a half, I think Fredi should give him a rest. It’d be nice if the offense can make it a non-save situation. Thanks.

If Oswalt is keeping in game shape to sign with someone before the end of the season he might be worth it, but they would have to do their homework.
We really do not know what we are getting from Jurrjens now. And U cannot trade him, other GM’s were probably lowballing Wren this off season, can you imagine what they would be lowballing him now.
By mid season, perhaps we get a consistent six plus IP our of guys like Delgado. Minor was fine last night, the first game was an aberration we hope.
I am not worried about Hanson yet, but he, Huddy and Minor will have to be studs this yr.
And Freeman is a worry right now, hope he is not a soph jinx, but if he does not get it going soon, I don’t know. I am pleased with Heyward to this point.
If these bums had just won two out of three to the lowly Muts they would be 6-2 and looking pretty good.
Every game is a must win. That is what they are paid for, and no matter how good it gets, September should always be in the back of their minds for motivational purposes.

Chipper is still darned good, he cannot play as much as he used to, but he is really not all that far away from what he was a few yrs ago skill wise.
I still say that had he not torn his ACL in 2009 he would have would up with power numbers similar to last yr, maybe even had 20 HR.
If the Braves get what they need from Hudson amd Hanson with development from Minor, there is no neeed for Oswalt.
Just not sure about Delgado yet, but if he given em 150-160 IP with 10 W and a sub 4 ERA, that is about as good as you can expect.

Coach—I don’t know if Minor will have the success Glavine had, but Minor has a better fastball than Glaving had even when Tommy G was young.
The comparision is lofty and understandable but if Minor become a solid number two or three guy I will be happy with him.
The W-L record might not be comparable because of the way the game is managed this day in time, hey, 15 wins is the 21st century version of 20. Guys just do not get the decisions they used to get.
And, Tommy had better teams to work with. Tommy was not quite as good as a Met, though not quite as bad as some NY fans would make him out to be.

Freeman is off to a slow start, but, IMO, he does have a more consistent approach at the plate than Heyward. When Heyward is playing well, he is a very high on-base guy which usually equates to a top or middle of the order hitter, but I can understand Fredi having a bit more faith in Freeman at this point. I wouldn’t automatically assume a sophomore slump for Freeman.

There’s only on thing about Freeman that truly concerns me. The reason I never figured him for a Sophomore Slump was his ability to hit to the opposite field – keeps the pitchers honest. However, IF it is true that they are trying to get him to pull the ball a lot more to gain some extra power, it throws the entire equation out of whack.
Leave the Kid alone – no reason whatsoever to change the way he hits – and let him do what he does well and seemingly comes naturally.

FF always starts out slow. I don’t think he will have the dreaded sophomore slump. But, I do agree with Lew. Don’t mess with a good thing. The guy hit 21 HRs last year with his natural approach. He is young and getting stronger. He can hit 30+ with no tweaks.

I think scoots had a detailed explanation a couple of days ago about this. It’s more a matter of showing he can pull to keep the pitcher honest. And I dont think it’s because they want him to hit for more power – all fields instead of just oppo.

I’m excited about Heyward going forward, just has all the skills. Look at Justin Upton took him 3 season’s to really break out. He put up good numbers but was up and down the 1st few season’s. Heyward can easily be a one of the best players in the game in a few years.

Both Freeman and Heyward are getting pitched in. They both like the ball away where they can extend their arms. Both hit the ball up the middle and oppo during strong training. That’s a pretty good indication of their focus, I think.

Good point, but in knowing this why would we bat him atop the lineup when he’s clearly struggling and known to start slow? I don;t think him batting 6th or 7th would have affected his confidence or whatever.

When Hart was up with 2 on, Nick said it was about to be 4-1. He was just a little early with that call, and had the teams backwards. But he was wrong about the Braves not scoring anymore.
