Scoring two runs was important in the second inning, but Minor’s ability to keep the Brewers off the board in the third inning will be integral to his success in the game.

CrisfromSac….I don’t drink kool aid. I was just wondering if you liked any players because you never say anything positive about the team. When things ate going good, you disappear. But when it’s bad, there you are again. You just seem like a guy who isn’t happy unless he’s miserable. That must be fun. And your Heyward assessment is spot on buddy…the guy hadn’t contributed at all this year. Great call.

I’m glad to see Brian finally setting his right foot properly before he turns on a pitch. I’ve emailed him several times pointing out this flaw in his swing. It looks like he finally made the adjustment. When I was playing, we’d lay a bat down next to the hitter’s feet to make sure they were set properly during BP.

I’ve also noticed that JHey has his hands too high. When he drops his hands his head moves, which has him pulling off the ball through the hitting zone. If he’d level out his hands to start with, when he strides forward his head would be still and he wouldn’t pull off the pitch. Then, as he flies through the hitting zone, the rotation of his hips would precede his hands thus generating more power while staying on the pitch. Someone like Don Baylor would notice this, but the Braves don’t seem to be paying attention. When I was pitching, I’d always dial back the curveball a little whenever I noticed this flaw. I’d get the hitter to pull off the ball and hit a weak popup.

Larry

One final note on last night’s game. I’d like to have a side session with Jair so that I could show him how his hips are flying open before he plants his left foot. That’s putting stress on his shoulder and taking mph’s off his fastball because his rotation through the arm slot is not fluid. I see a strained hip flexor or a pulled oblique in his future. Back when I was pitching, even catchers would pick up on this tendency. It’s too bad the Braves don’t have anyone who can coach Jurrjens through this mechanical breakdown.

I’d love to see Minor go 7 or 8 innings tonight, but let’s just take it one inning at a time, he has a tendency to hit a wall and implode. He’s not a rookie anymore though so maybe he’s figured out how to avoid it.

bravo1

April 14th, 2012
8:13 pm

Marcum is a good pitcher. Brewers gave up a good young player for him for a reason. He’s no sloppy junk pitcher. He doesn’t throw hard, but knows how to use what he has very well. It’s alright to look fooled against a good one and we’re up by two.

JC Brave

April 14th, 2012
8:14 pm

No one’s doomed or whatever BS because of Freeman’s struggles. What really frustrates some, or me at least, is that he was doing tremendously good in ST. Granted, IT WAS ST. But damn… such a sudden slump, precisely at the start of the season.

njbraves

April 14th, 2012
8:15 pm

Cris…you’re so full of it. Heyward had a very good rookie year, and a bad second year. That’s not a year and a half of bad play. Werth had an awful season last year, but you don’t mention that when saying he’s better than Heyward. You don’t like the guy, fine, but don’t make things up.

Freeman was tearing it up until Walker started trying to get him to pull the ball, Fredi doesn’t like to pull, last year when he was in a slump he said he was pull happy and had to start hitting up the middle. If you have noticed since that interview with Walker every ball Fredi has hit has been to the left.
