HOUSTON – He received a cowboy hat as a retirement gift from the Houston Astros on Monday, and Chipper Jones plans to be back in the lineup trying to help beat them Tuesday.
The Braves third baseman is expected to brought off the 15-day disabled list and put in the lineup 15 days after arthroscopic surgery for torn meniscus in his left knee — and without a rehab assignment.
Jones and Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez were satisfied with his mobility and swings during an workout Monday afternoon at Minute Maid Park, five hours before the series opener against the Astros. Tuesday is the first day he’s eligible to come off the DL.
“I would have gone down [to the minor leagues] for a couple of at-bats, and I just thought it was a waste of time because six at-bats in the minors isn’t going to help me be on 95 [mph fastballs] when I get back up here,” Jones said. “They might as well just throw me back into the fire. And ultimately, Fredi and [general manager] Frank [Wren] left it up to me.”
Jones had the similar arthroscopic surgery for torn meniscus in his right knee last summer and played in two minor league games before returning. “Then I blew out my quad in my first game back,” he said.
The Braves just got swept by the Mets to start the season, and if Jones feels he’s ready to get back in there and help the team, they’re ready to welcome him back.
He had 25 at-bats in spring training and faced “live” pitching once since then, taking about 15 swings against Braves rookie Randall Delgado during an off-day workout Friday at New York.
“He feels like he doesn’t need to go out and get a rehab assignment, he feels like he’s fine,” Gonzalez said. “So I figure a guy that’s got 10,000 plate appearances, I’ll take his word for it.”
Last week Jones wasn’t sure that he’d be ready before Friday’s home opener against Milwaukee, because he said the left leg still felt heavy and he didn’t know if he’d be ready to run. He ran the bases some during the workout at New York, and Monday he took grounders and moved from side to side.
“While I’ve had some sore days along the way, today I feel great,” he said, “and I did what I had to today to prove that I can go out there tomorrow… I may not be right on time here at the beginning, at least I’m in the lineup and that means something.”
Asked if he thought he could make a difference, Jones nodded and said, “They pay me to hit.”
He has a .397 average with eight homers, 31 RBIs and a 1.207 OPS in 38 games at Minute Maid Park, after hitting .252 with four homers in 27 games at Houston’s old Astrodome.
His parents, who live most of the year on Jones’ southwest Texas ranch, are in Houston for this week’s series, just as they have been for most games he’s played in the city.
“I love playing here, obviously in front of my parents and what-not,” he said. “But it’s just a matter of me getting back in there. I need to get back in there no matter who we’re facing. But yeah, it’s awfully special to be able to play here.”
Stetson for the old Battleaxe
Jones, who’ll be 40 on April 24, was honored before Monday night’s game by the Astros and given a cream-colored Stetson cowboy hat that was presented to him by former Astros star Craig Biggio in a pregame presentation at home plate. He got a standing ovation from a small crowd.
“Really cool. Classy gesture by the Astros organization,” Jones said. “I can wear it out on the ranch. Houston’s always been special to me because it’s the one place my parents get to come. There’s a ton of Braves fans here, we’ve had a ton of great games here in my tenure here with the Braves against Houston, so it’s awfully nice of them to do that.”
In addition to many memorable moments in regular season and postseason games against the Astros, it’s also where Jones tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during in August 2010, a season-ending injury that many initially believed might end his career.
Jones was back for the start of spring training six months later.
“A lot of good and bad things have happened here,” he said. “It’s been an interesting place to play. Back when the Killer B’s were here, I think we went 10 or 12 games in a row where they were one-run games. Just really close, well-pitched, well-played games that two playoff-type teams often played against each other. That’s what I’ll remember when I’m done.”
Teammates are wearing blue T-shirts they had designed as a tribute to Jones, whom they refer to as “Battleaxe.” The shirts have two crossed axes over Jones’ No. 10 on the left breast, and highlights of Jones’ career on the back along with a picture of him batting.
Jones was in New York with the Braves for the opening series, where they hit .151 in three games. They had a .172 average during an eight-game losing streak going back to last season, and the Braves hit .195 with runners in scoring position last September during their 10-20 collapse.
“We’ve dug ourselves a little bit of a hole, but it’s important that we start swinging the bats,” Jones said. We played well enough to win at least two of the three [at New York] if we swing the bats at all. We’re just not getting anything started early in innings. Whenever we get a guy in scoring position it’s always two outs, and that’s not a comfortable spot for a hitter. They have to get a hit to score.
“We haven’t given ourselves many opportunities to score any easy runs, you know a guy on third less than two outs, where guys really prosper. It’s going to take us being a little better early in innings to turn it around.”

After you lose 3 in a row in your season series opener, it is not the time to experiment with a ? player to find out what he can do against left-handers when that is his weaker side. You need to go all out for a win.

This team f’n sucks. A typical Brandon Beachy start, can’t keep a lead. Typical Braves game, can’t keep a lead. 4 errors already in this game. This team will get absolutely destroyed when they play a good team. They are being down right embarrassed by 2 crappy teams, the Mets and Astros. I am ready to write this team off already after 4 games. Actually, after 34 games dating back to their monumental collapse last season. What a f’n joke this team is.

I was referring to Francisco who only hit .269 against lefties in the minors last year (.343 against righties). I accept that at some point that you have to try him out if you put him on the roster (and I think we have the answer: Conrad II as a fielder) and not too long into the season so he doesn’t rust out on the bench. However, not during a slump that is a continuation of the last year’s dive. The team needs to get out of the losing streak before it casts a permanent pall on the team (if it already hasn’t).

Sub par manager. Livan Hernandez….are you kidding me? Swiss cheese defense. Depending on Matty Diaz for offense? And we’re depending on Grandpa Jones to give us a spark???? This team is not good. Put Hernandez, Francisco, Heyward, Bourn, Martinez, and Jurrjens on the train. Package some players; make some deals. Get some offense. Starter and back end of the bullpen are good. Rally, amen to the laughing comment. I, for one, am tired of seeing this complacent, happy attitude from the Braves during this horrendous stretch of “play”. At least act like you care about the fans who spend “serious” money to watch this tragic comedy. And I agree totally on the hat thing. The Braves should purge the roster now ,don’t wait until they back to Atlanta. Hernandez, Durbin , Diaz ,Constanza and Fatz Francisco outa here. Hell, bring up five kids from the minors ,five guys off the waiver wire, five names out of the phone book . They could only be an improvement over this clown show. This is not a major league caliber team, Wren’s last minute pick ups are crap.Six months to improve the roster and he makes panic picks at the end of spring training. Wren better make some changes before Friday or by Monday the TED will be as empty as Fulton County Stadium was back in the mid 80’s.

“Fruit Cake” loving Fruiti Gonzalez is FAT! Livan Hernandez is FAT and OLD at the same time! Juan Francisco is FAT and CLUMSY. Brian McCann appears to be blind. Chipper is an OLD 40 and probably wished he had retired by now. Talk about going out in a whimper on a loser of a team. Bourn is outta here on the first train to anywhere that ain’t Atlanta “Losersville” Georgia USA. Frank Wren is FAT and equally STUPID. If no money is there, you don’t go FAT, WASHED UP, and OLD. You go young, cheap, skinny, and hungry! How hard is this people?? Young sleek Pastornicky, forgetting what team he was on, throws to first on a double play ball like baseball is meant to be played. Unfortunately the FAT, OLD lumbering pitcher stumbling over there to take the throw has yet to reach the bag. The list goes on, and on, and on. Great pitching? Pastornicky made 26 errors in 117 games in the minors last year. I worry more about his fielding than I do his hitting.

Sounds like our next hitting coach. No way we let Chipper leave and go anywhere else. Not that Chipper wants to ever wear any other uniform.
There also may be another open coaching position available in ATL if we dod not start winning. THE HEAD COACH aka the manager. Fredi may be just too laid back for what the Braves need. We need someone to light a fire under this listless bunch. We also need to take care of front office business. Go spend some money and resign Bourn. Go spend some money and sign a few free agents under 35 years old. Lose Matt Diaz, and get us a back up out fielder who can hit HRs off the bench. Other than that, this team has plenty of talent, they are just lacking leadership

Old Timer I love Chipper but he made several fielding gaffs in real pressure situations which cost us dearly. I assume you are talking about the ball he Ole’d instead of moving his feet and getting in front of it. He also misplayed a slow roller a couple of years ago when frankly he looked distracted or uninterested. I thought he might retire because he looked bored. 15 Million Dollars is a big incentive to stay but the player has to generate the performance. I hate that I remember his fielding issues more than his hitting exploits. He won his MVP in one series against the Mets when he dominated the 3 games. Because he played in Atlanta it took nation wide playoff type coverage from Shea Stadium to put him over the top in the MVP voting.

“Swinging the bat” is not the problem. Making contact is. I know little league teams that know the strike zone better than these guys. Since management and the manager won’t go off on these guys, that leaves the fans to call them out.

The Hernandez acquisition is one of the worst I can recall. If memory serves me correctly, the only team I ever saw him shut down on a consistent basis was the Braves. With all of this alleged great pitching, are you honestly going to tell me we don’t have a couple of guys on the farm who can be just as good as Hernandez or Durbin. I do my best to try not to sound like one of those fans who claim they know more about baseball than management does, but these moves, and the lack thereof in the offseason, have no rational explaination except to save money, both in the short and long terms. The phony speeches by Wren and Schuerholz claiming this team has what it takes to compete are no longer funny, and now seemingly pitiful, as ownership has completely locked them down. I don’t blame management, I blame ownership. Realistically, what is Wren gonna say, that he made those moves because Liberty won’t allow him to spend and improve? That would be honest, and he’d be writing his own pink slip. But, on the other hand, don’t expect real baseball fans, like myself and some of the others on this blog, to buy it and support this team. Many of you say real fans go to games no matter what. I disagree. Real fans will show ownership how disappointed they are by not going to games and hitting them directly in the wallet. Only then will they get the message, assuming the Braves aren’t some sort of tax writeoff or collectable car that will sit there, look pretty (???), but never get driven.

I think it might be difficult for the Braves to hire Francona. When he was in Boston he knew the Red Sox had the money and the GM to put a great team together. They won 2 WS while he was there. The Braves won’t commit the payroll to be able to make impact signings and will probably lose their most consistent player in Brian McCann. Francona has a good announcers job which pays him well so he can afford to wait until the right opportunity comes along. Why sign on to manage a team that won’t spend the money necessary to be competitive? He’d only be setting himself up to fail. Just my humble opinion..

Does anyone remember that it was HIS Red Sox that dropped an EVEN LARGER WC lead than Fredi’s team did last season; with a team that has better resources and more talent than Fredi’s club???
I’m certainly no Fredi apologist, but why do you think hiring Francona would be so much better? If any team SHOULD NOT have collapsed last season, it was Boston–yet the thought is that Terry would somehow turn this club around? I’m missing the logic here.

Bill, no offense, but I also hate the fact you remember a couple of errors rather than the hundreds of great moments Chipper has given this team. Also, won the MVP in three games? You have to be kidding. Chipper, as well as the Braves, had a great season all the way around. A couple of errors that cost the team and hundreds of homers and RBIs that led them to victory? No comparison.

honestly, the team is just overrated in almost every aspect. They weren’t able to hit last year, even before the collapse. The pitching is good, but not nearly what the Phillies have–hell maybe not even the Marlins. Bullpen was overused, yes, but Livan and Durbin are terrible. And until this team can score a run with a runner on 3rd <2 out it will only get worse.
Fredi has made plenty of boneheaded moves, but the team is hitting under 200. Not too many managers are going to turn .200 hitting into a bunch of wins

I share the observations and sentiments of most here about this team. Braves did it with mirrors — and an outstanding bullpen — last season. Made it all the way to September before things collapsed and just what the hell was done to address things? Hoping and wishing that underproductive players might produce more (i.e. Prado, Heyward, McCann, etc.) was a pie-in-the-sky solution by Wren. The much-heralded pitching is a collection of promise, nothing more. There is no dominant arm, no stopper. no one you can count on to go out slam the door. Sure, you’ll see those types of pitching performances occasionally, but seldom when you need it — like after you lose your first four games in a season with a q. The rotation is still developing, yes, but average. It kills me to see Wren signing stiffs like Livan Hernandez, Chad Durbin and Juan Francisco. For all of you doubters, the addition of this trio in the final week of spring training should have been an alarm to just how bad things will be this season. If these guys are an IMPROVEMENT on what was already there, then fans who think this team will be anything close to .500 are in la-la land. As much as Chipper should have retired by now, his return to the lineup MUST provide some kind of spark to a roster that shows little to no zeal. What his lacks in ability of an aging body he makes up for with a kind of professionalism that long has faded from this team. And yes, ownership can be faulted to a degree, but deep pockets aren’t the endall answer to this situation.

I know that I am in the minority with my thought about the Braves but so be it. I believe the Braves are true professional players and managers/coaches. They want to win as badly as the fans want them to win. So why not back off and give them time to turn it around. The fans are being critical to the point that they are insulting this team instead of pulling for them to win. Some of the comments are way out of line when they get personal as many are.

Having Chipper for a week or two will help. Heyward needs to be in the minors and should be getting help from Smoltz’s shrink. Uggla is ridiculously bad, and Fredi & Bobby are just ate up with Diaz.
So Francisco can hit? He better be Bonds-esque to account for his defense. I really don’t think that Wren & Fredi will find true happiness until the Braves lineup will consist of 8 utility payers staring.

I honestly don’t believe things would get any better should FG get fired. Wren will just go out and hire another “yes man” type of guy, which is FG’s problem to begin with. He’s the Jimmy Carter of baseball managers……he tries to be everyone’s friend and doesn’t want to step on people’s toes and call them out for poor performances.
A guy like Ozzie Guillen may be controversial (especially after his recent Castro comments) but a manager like him is who the Braves need and until they get a manager like Ozzie or even Francona who will hold people accountable and give criticism where its due, the culture and philosophy in Atlanta will never change.

Livan has been a starter for 15 years, he throws 82 mph, and we decide to pick him up and put him in our bullpen????????? HUH?????
Maybe Francisco is not a third baseman. Dude makes a scary amount of errors in the minors but hit’s a ton too. Try and get his bat in the lineup but geez, he can’t play Left worse than Diaz!!
THose of you asking for Bourn to be traded have lost it. That dude is exactly what we need, speed at the top of the lineup. That being said, if the hitters behind him don’t help him out then he becomes irrelevant.

Chipper will hit 3 grandslams & have 9 unassisted triple plays! Then he will stub his toe getting on the bus & be on DL for 150 games.
Hernandez & Francisco will be given his meal vouchers.
Joe Adcock will rise from the grave and become asst. mgr.
Scherholtz will have hernia surgery after he once again splits a gut on how clever he was to get Wrenn as GM.

[Chorus]
AHH, you just came home from blowin a lead
Tell me whachu gon do? ACT A FOOL
The Mets and Stros smoked us like a stash of weed
BOY what we gon do? ACT A FOOL
Just got a man on third and then left him to hang
Tell me what’d we just do? ACT A FOOL
Got this mo**********g season started off with a bang
BOY what we gonna do? ACT A FOOL
[Verse 1]
Talkin bout Walks, Hits, Runs, singles and doubles
If we don’t get em soon we’re in some serious trouble
Evacuate the dugout and take some BP
It’s high time we fire old Frank and Freddie
See those fools slipped up and let our team go to sh**
Like September never happened, we don’t like it one bit!
It makes you wonder “Wren, what kinda stuff you on!”
U need 2 disappear like “POOF, BI*** BE GONE”
You think Francisco plays third? MAN GIMMIE A BREAK!
He’s an error causing fata** that ate too much cake
It seems they want Pastor as our shortstop this year
His err’s and lack of hitting will drive a drunk to drink beer
Our teams BA is a pi** poor one sixty five
How the hell do you expect us to just stay alive?
Only 2 HR’s and our OBP’s just two thirty six
This is something no minor move could possibly fix
Another tailor made double play and Bourn got caught stealing
This whole team needs a facelift if we’re to start healing
Chalk up another loss, wow, big a** surprise
We go from the front to the back and now we’re tossed to the side, WHAT?
[Chorus]
Uggla just tripped up cost us 2 more damn runs
Tell me whatsee gon do? ACT A FOOL
They put up a 7 spot, there’s no end to this fun
BOY what they like to do? ACT A FOOL
Minor and Beachy got roughed up and beat yet again
Tell me whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
Schuerholtz wrote us all a letter, wants to be our best friend
Da**it, what do we all do? ACT A FOOL
[Verse 2]
Let’s take it to the field cuz we made 3 outs fast
Got some bottom feeding team all whooping our a**
Just bought a tomahawk and now I’m choppin like mad
But no amount of choppin works, stinking losers are sad
We got 14 freakin flags hangin out Turner Field
All years of disappointment save one so big deal
Chipper just barely stepped out onto the dirt
Now he’s writhing in pain on the ground again hurt
Heyward’s a bust but that’s no big surprise
Throw inside pitches and you’ll surely darken his skies
It’s getting to the point where I just don’t even care
Our bench look like jabronis from the show Bad News Bears
It’s bobble head day and they play Country Boy on the mic
How bout Loser by Beck and have some clown on a trike
Back in the news for a loss again, read it and weep
The Brewers busted out brooms for a gargantuan sweep
You think that after last September’s epic collapse
And Freddi G’s idiotic tippin his caps
We’d wake the f*** up and start addressing our needs
But no we “stand pat” and fail to ever succeed
[Chorus]
You just got gaffled 14 to 2
Boy whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
Now your fans are all pi$$ed and they yell at you
Team whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
Now them Phils laugh it up and still runnin they mouth
BOY what we sposed to do? ACT A FOOL
Everybody talkin sh** about the Dirty South
Tell me what I’M gon do? ACT A FOOL
[Verse 3]
We got our eyes closed shut and our gloves wide open
Had 4 errors yesterday and the Braves are still choking
See the bats stay ice cold and the D is ugly
At least the Braves Girls still look cute and snuggly
http://bravesbaseballblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/2618964759_3ef9464426.jpg
Still defeated on the road and headed back to the Ted
By the All Star Break there’s no doubt we’ll be dead
Our D’s in the toilet, our O has gone rotten
By mid-May this team will be damn near forgotten
Now boos just cascade and the seats are all empty
“We’re abandoning ship!” “Oh man, do not tempt me.”
Now dem punks in the dugout they just sit there and pout
Plus our new name is Fire cuz we just got stomped out
and yeah, we got flags and Ninety Five, that’s fantastic
Soon deez bums will ask: “Will that be paper or plastic?”
Fifth inning and once again we’re falling apart
Our fans are so quiet you can now hear a fart
It’s one hit, four runs on three errors this inning
I’M ABOUT TO BLOW THIS WHOLE SH** UP TO SMITHEREENS!
[Chorus]
Just tipped his cap so hard that Freddy bent his rims
Tell me whatsee gon do? ACT A FOOL
MAN, THAT’S ANOTHER ERROR FORGET ABOUT WEB GEMS
BOY whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
Caught another fly ball and just put us to bed
Ladies whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
These Braves are washed up and this team is dead
BOY whatcha gon do? ACT A FOOL
