Serious question- why is it not a viable option to play Prado at 3rd every day (that chippers out) and then platoon Diaz and Hinske in the outfield with Bourne and Heyward? That takes Francisco’s shoddy defense out of the equation and gives us a power bat deep in the lineup when Hinske plays.
I dont see the downside.
Also, why was Hernandez still in the game last night when it was a 4-3 game with one out and runners on the corners? We have guys in the bullpen for a reason…why not bring in a sinker/slider reliever/ground ball guy and try to end the inning right there? I dont get why Hernandez stays in there..
No – manager going out the door is a visceral reaction that makes fans feel like something is changing. The true way is to methodically change the players… a trade here and later a trade there.. to address weaknesses.
I thought we were suppose to beat the Mets and Astros so we could jump ouy to a lead early in the Division Race. What has happened? Fredi is doing his usual…..awe shucks!!!!!!! We played well…BS I watched the game too. If these guys are ML quality players I’m a Russian Motor Cycle Cop.
Note: Wondering why the Braves are getting worse? The Braves team salary went from 100 Million in 2010 to 82 Million this year. And that 82 mil. includes 14 mil. for Chipper.
Why would you be surprised. You are relying on Heyward to come back and be a 280 hitter at best. An unknown in CF, hoping Prado will come back in left. At 3rd you are relying on an oft injured old man and someone who couldn’t even make the Reds squad and then a rookie at short. At 2nd you are hoping your power will return to his 260 lifetime average and at first we have some hope in a potential good player with the emphasis on Potential. Pitching is good and at catcher we are hoping McCann returns to his all star form. Does this sound like a formula for a winning year. Only is everything comes together, which it seldom does.
Thank GOD none of you folks are the President, GM or manager of the Braves. Someone goes 0-4 & your ready to give them an outright release…It’s fine to be frustrated, but good lord, there’s still 158 games to play. AND, Diaz played b/c he’s hit over .400 against Happ in his career & J-Hey has struggled against lefites. I bet if Diaz went 3-4 with 2 HRs last night, everyone would be saying “Great move by Fredi to put Diaz in there…” Enough of the mellow drama people. You dont like it, stop watching, but I doubt your “boycott” will have much of a following. Go Braves!
If these games don’t matter, than why are we playing them? I’m sick and tired of the kool-aid drinking Braves fans saying “these games don’t matter”. Remember last season, we missed the playoffs by one game. If we would have won one of those “games that doesn’t matter”, we would have made it to the playoffs. Also, people have a reason to worry about this team. We pretty much have the same team out there, that was part of the historic collapse last season.

Keep blaming fredi and liberty. That’s what wren will do. Tampa and Arizona made playoffs last year with half the payroll of the braves and aren’t paying one cent to former players with their 2012 payroll. We have made the playoffs once since 2005 and wouldn’t have made them in 2010 except that Troy Glaus carried the team on his shoulders the first 2 and a half months of that season. Anybody willing to make a straight up trade of Heyward for the right fielder in KC? But keep hope alive, Selig has added more wild card teams to the playoff mix this year. One day a team with a losing record will probably qualify for the playoffs. Pathetic.
When I first saw the lineup… with Heyward benched and DIAZ in right. I thought to myself “Fredi Gonzalez is a horrible manager.” Then I see him bring in Livan Hernandez …. NOT Oflaherty not Venters not Kimbrel?! Where is the sense of urgency to win your first game of the season? He makes questionable, dare I say idiotic, move after move and he still has the keys to a dynamite team? This guy needs to get.
Well The angry fans are becoming the Majority….Right now the Majority of Braves fans are silent because they are dissappointed. Granted also a good portion of Braves fans couldn’t tell you what a BB is or what a K/9 IP is and what a WHIP is. Coming home we will see the kiddies and wifes to come in have a sunny day outside and enjoy the game (They wont care what the score is). But Males ages 18 -99 will know what is really going on and most of them will get even more vocal about the failures of this team from last season and now toward this season. The Front Office did absolutely NOTHING to improve, (Then if you feel it wasnt the players it must be the manager)……Oh wait they kept Fredi Gonzalez. Yea we are only 0-4 but we are only 0-4 against the worst teams in Baseball…..Whats gonna happen when we play the Phillies, Cardnials, Diamondbacks, Brewers, and Nationals.
Fire Freddi Gonzo! Bring in a manager with some fire, who wants to prove himself again like Terry Francona. All these naysayers on here saying Frank Wren didn’t do anything in off season, obviously don’t understand he only has 6 million to work with to acquire some talent. Not to mention, we have so many pitching prospects, and have until july 31st to make a move. Freddi is so not motivating. Time to move on without him.
The things that annoys me the most is the Lack of Effort and Urgency…..
And that stupid Phrase “Tip Your Cap”……How about accepting blame for your teams performance and use that to drive you to get better
Actually Heyward is the best Offensive player at the moment. Granted he doesnt have a high batting Average, he does get walks and does try to steal bases…..Something Bourne hasnt done. At least Heyward gives some Effort, Players like Brian McCann and Uggla havent
Getting ugly out there in the blogoshere, honestly reckingball your defensive posture is weakening -we all hope your right but we are angry that this team, OUR team, that we chose to spend hours with in a prepuescent fantasy of world series victories is so horrendous that our dreams are being dashed upon the granite of reality…..Wheeeewwwww, let the BS flow!
Please get rid of the pregame and postgame twitter chick on tv. Only posting positive twitters makes me sick. What they should really do is post some of the ajc blogs on the air to show Jerome and BJ what the fans really think.
Ahh.. so you can get inside the players to determine who is and isn’t making an effort. I think it’s more about talent, personally. McCann has proven himself over time and Uggla just needs to straighten out the streakiness. As for Heyward, I just don’t know what he is yet – - and I don’t think he knows what he is yet. Is he a power hitter? More of a contact hitter? Has he figured out which bad habits snuck into his swing when he was hurt? Can he change his approach now that pitchers have made adjustments against him?
Why dont we blow this team up if we are crappy in June. We could trade Prado, Hudson, Jair Jurjjens, and McCann. to get some Minor Leagers that want to play, and when Chipper and D. Lowes contract are off the books next season we can use that money to get some players.
Hey COUNT DRACULA” you ever hear of the FLORIDA MARLINS” they won two world series with lest than halve the braves payroll. Liberty Media knows the braves wasted 24 million this year. If it was your money would you be happy the way millions are wasted.
CraZy, is it the chicken or the egg? In this town you have to put a competitive sports product out there or interest will drop like a lead weight. And I would argue that Liberty Media and its tight purse strings produced the product which is getting less and less interesting to ATL fans… resulting in attendance issues…
Why dont we blow this team up if we are crappy in June. We could trade Prado, Hudson, Jair Jurjjens, and McCann. to get some Minor Leagers that want to play, and when Chipper and D. Lowes contract are off the books next season we can use that money to get some players.
I could see Prado and Jurrjens, but Huddy is a 10-5 player and McCann is the best hitting catcher in the game. We’re already the 4th youngest team in baseball we don’t need to get younger the guys we have now are good players we’re just missing a game changing player like Chipper use to be. You don’t blow up a team that won 89 games with the 3rd youngest roster in baseball.
After TBS dropped the braves the attendence and coverage for the braves has gone south…. The braves need an owner who cares about winning….. teams have won with less than 100 million dollar payroll so It can be done but with this group of idiots it will never be done….. GO BRAVES
One of the reasons Terry Francona left Boston was beer in the locker room. Hell” Rogers pitching staff can’t stay sober know, the last thing they need easy access to beer.
There was a reason the Marlins ran this boob of a coach off. My prediction is he is gone at All-star break. no one did less with more other than his predecessor B. Cox.
I am never this negative this early in the season and maybe I am buying into the negative hype, but that is 4 games this season and 18 from the end of last year, THAT THEY PLAYED WITH NO DESIRE to succeed – Don’t talk about the payroll being down from last year – there is talent on this team. They do not believe in something – maybe the team, maybe themselves, but I still stand by what I said earlier – The manager is the one who sets the tone and I do not think he is capable of doing so. His last two post game interviews are stumbling, fumbling —throw in one accurate point of “he hit the ball hard to to right field” – then more bumbling emotional backspin – How can he turn this around when he has no clue why it is happening – We are the third youngest team (w/out Chipper on the active) and these kids need a GENERAL, not a buck private who can peal potatoes. This start reminds of the team of the early 80’s – quite scary to live through that again!!!!
cowdogit, you’re crrect that the Marlins won twice with less payroll (and the Diamondbacks once), but when you look at the larger picture – winners over the years – teams with more salary win more. I know we will never compete with the Yanks, Sox, etc. PS – Look at the Marlins’ salary now…
New York Yankees $ 197,962,289
Philadelphia Phillies $ 174,538,938
Boston Red Sox $ 173,186,617
Los Angeles Angels $ 154,485,166
Detroit Tigers $ 132,300,000
Texas Rangers $ 120,510,974
Miami Marlins $ 118,078,000
San Francisco Giants $ 117,620,683
St. Louis Cardinals $ 110,300,862
Milwaukee Brewers $ 97,653,944
Chicago White Sox $ 96,919,500
Los Angeles Dodgers $ 95,143,575
Minnesota Twins $ 94,085,000
New York Mets $ 93,353,983
Chicago Cubs $ 88,197,033
Atlanta Braves $ 83,309,942
Cincinnati Reds $ 82,203,616
Seattle Mariners $ 81,978,100
Baltimore Orioles $ 81,428,999
Washington Nationals $ 81,336,143
Cleveland Indians $ 78,430,300
Colorado Rockies $ 78,069,571
Toronto Blue Jays $ 75,489,200
Arizona Diamondbacks $ 74,284,833
Tampa Bay Rays $ 64,173,500
Pittsburgh Pirates $ 63,431,999
Kansas City Royals $ 60,916,225
Houston Astros $ 60,651,000
Oakland Athletics $ 55,372,500
San Diego Padres $ 55,244,700
no one did less with more other than his predecessor B. Cox.
I don’t remember a Bobby Cox team having a collapse like Fred’s team. Hell I’d love to still have Bobby as manager if anything I wouldn’t be worried about the team’s mental stability like I am with Fred as manager.
Dang, I kinda wish we would have kept Fracoeur now. We could have Francoeur in Left, Bourn in Center and Heyward in Right. Prado could be a 3B fill in and super utility player.
@ Crazy trust me this team isnt a 89 win team this year. The fact is Chipper will play 100 games if we are lucky and even then I only expect .270 10 HR and 55 RBIs. McCann maybe should be traded because he will make 12 million next season his defense has gone south and his Average is heading south. We have Christian Bethancourt who by some is the #1 rated Catcher prospect in baseball. And David Ross can be a number 1 catcher. Its just economics but Hudson will want to go to a playoff team and a team needing pitching like Boston, New York, or Texas would offer a lot for him. We need something to happen because what we have isnt working. So who do you blame for the playoff collapse and the 0-4 record against the Mets and Astros?????????
wow Count Dacula….. great post looks like some of those teams that are underneath the braves in payroll are better than the braves… for instance look at the reds, blue jays, nationals, diamondbacks, rays. mariners….. those teams are all potential playoff teams and have alot of upside….. the braves dont and they are lacking true leadership in a manager!!
I agree with CraZy, baseball needs a salary cap and foreign players should have to enter the draft. It is horse sh*t that the rich teams get to cherry pick the best foreign players
We have Christian Bethancourt who by some is the #1 rated Catcher prospect in baseball.
They also said Heyward was the #1 prospect in all of baseball… and that’s worked out great!! As for the collapse…. I blame youth and Fred for the collapse and the 0-4 start is irrelevant at this point. If it was football 0-4 would be a big deal, but its baseball 0-4 to start a 162 game schedule isn’t anything to freak out about. Sure there’s some concern, were young and I’m still not sure about Fred as manager.
Yeah Count Dacula I would…. inregards to the offense….. we need offense…. reds have votto, phillips, bruce…. 3 core hitting players… name 3 that you can build around here.( I mean hitting wise). Plus they lock up there good young players and long contracts the braves like to wait til the last minute….. But pitching I like the braves rotation I really do….. but with no offense pitching doesnt matter
ole Fernangez or whatever his name is at 3rd is so out of shape it aint funny..well it is laughable! good greif Wren…..this just stinks…IF YOU THINK ITS GOING TO GET BETTER you are really a prune….lol. I aint buying the cool aide on more…get in some real major legaue hitters! Please….YUK! We fans deserve a better product!
one more thing…when it comes to a first yr player and the pitcher getting the first hits of the season RISP? Wake up Wren or do you care! Apparently not!~
Braves fan in maine – I agree with you about pitching. Actually, I’d like to see just ONE solid bat in this lineup… one guy the opposing pitcher really needs to be concerned with. That’s all.
Exactlly Count Dacula…. I have said this before the braves are one bat away from being good and when they didnt do a thing this offseason I was mad because I felt like we where there and if we had a hitter we would be alright…. just frustrating
Every team wins 50 games and loses 50 games it’s what you do in the other 62 games. There’s no reason to start freaking out… I don’t even pay attention to W/L record very much until we get to about 50 games into the season. It’s not like anyone is going to get traded or fired before that point.
Why is everyone harping about losing four in a row to the worst teams in the league? You’re all wrong, BECAUSE IF YOU LOSE FOUR IN A ROW TO THE WORST TEAMS IN THE LEAGUE, GUESS WHAT? YOU ARE THE WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE!!
Exactly. And although Freddi gets his share of blame… sometimes rightly so… I place the bulk of responsibility for this mediocre product on Wren/Schuerholtz. And I’d just like to crack the 90 Million salary level to give us a little flexibility.
When I saw they are paying Livan Hernandez 750k I almost threw up on my desk. I’m a casual baseball follower, but even I know this guy is complete garbage.

Ahh.. so you can get inside the players to determine who is and isn’t making an effort.

I could see Prado and Jurrjens, but Huddy is a 10-5 player and McCann is the best hitting catcher in the game. We’re already the 4th youngest team in baseball we don’t need to get younger the guys we have now are good players we’re just missing a game changing player like Chipper use to be. You don’t blow up a team that won 89 games with the 3rd youngest roster in baseball.

Bourn – average; not the star the Braves thought he was
Prado – above average; has potential if allowed to play one position
Chipper – quickly fading star
McCann – good bat; defensively subpar
Uggla – inconsistent slugger
Freeman – loads of potential; will only get better
Heyward – loads of potential; may not be realized in Atlanta
Shortstop – remains to be seen

They also said Heyward was the #1 prospect in all of baseball… and that’s worked out great!! As for the collapse…. I blame youth and Fred for the collapse and the 0-4 start is irrelevant at this point. If it was football 0-4 would be a big deal, but its baseball 0-4 to start a 162 game schedule isn’t anything to freak out about.
