salaries are a moving target that is always gonna appreciate over the long term, they got paid more than they would have been worth to us, but not necessarily by another team’s values
@Nolee–with the new money from TV deals and franchise appreciations, yes, salaries are going to be a moving target for most teams–but this team is going to be an exception. You will probably see a 90 to 95 mil payroll into the next decade and that is not going to cut it in the direction the game is going in.
@Ray–I get that you do not want the Braves to overpay for any player but if average talent is commanding in the 3 to 5 million per yr range, what is it going to take to re up with the good talent like Bourn and Mc Cann, deals that are going to be on the table in the future.
Can the system keep up bring in one starter per yr as it has done the last three (Heyward, Freeman last yr and now Pastornicky).
If other teams are paying up and our team does not, we will not keep our players. And its a revolving door of bring in players and they stay here untl its their time to get paid.
Even Pittsburgh went out and extended Mc Cutchen for six yrs. I saw where SF went out and extended Cain for 5 yrs.
Chipper and Lowe’s money comes off the book this yr and who knows what the next excuse will be to go out and get nobody again. And you cannot bank that Bourn re-ups here either.
The system better stay good. That is one thing we have that keeps this team respectable. And maybe Wren makes 2 or 3 diamond in the rouhg trades. That is what it takes to maintain respectability.
I also hear that Votto has gotten extended by Cincy.
For now, we have 2012, so hope for the best and the right vibes come oour way.

Disgusted, I don’t think the Pirates overpaid for McCutchen. I thought that was a pretty good deal. I think one of the hidden benefits that the Braves will get when they resign McCann is next year when there are going to be a lot more interleague games, the DH will be more prominent in the NL. I have never liked seeing teams sign pitchers for 6+ years. In regards to Bourn if he is going to get somewhere in the 14-15m range.. I don’t want to see the Braves sign him.

One final thing, no matter what we will always see teams overpay players. If you have a huge payroll like the Yanks, you can make that mistake. Not a big deal. A mid level team in payroll, it effects them for too long when they overpay especially for mid level guys.

Ray–I agree that the Mc Cutchen deal was tremendous for the Pirates.
I am curious what Bourn will get in his 30 yr old contract. I do not see the Braves offering him $9 or 10 mil per.
Hey, I want to see guys like Hanson, Jason and Freeman have the bulk of their careers in Braves unis but I do not trust that it will happen.

Bourn and McCutcheon are one thing when you are talking about extensions. McCann is another. The horror of having McCann under a high dollar long term contract could be devastating to this franchise. Arguably McCann had his career year in 2008. He really hasn’t come close to it since. I think his best years are behind him and I’ve heard all the excuses about off season conditioning I can stand. . McCann in 6 years at $20 million is a franchise crippling opportunity.

I know. It’s been a long time since I have been so happy with the Niners offseason. They have made some great moves that both help the team and allow for financial flexibility. Having all 11 starters back on that great D makes me really, really happy. Jed York & Trent Baalke are smart men (as is Jim Harbaugh…)

the iBook mousepad works pretty much like the screen on the iPhone- all touch and depending on how you swipe your fingers (and how many you swipe), it does different things…still don’t know all of them (and the screen still randomly does weird things when I least expect it…)

Speaing of the Blu-Ray player…I got a Best Buy gift card for my birthday and finally decided to spend it. I got a few movies I knew I should see, but the one I really wanted was only on Blu-Ray. So I figured…what the heck, I’ll get a Blu-Ray player. I also had a Visa gift card that would’ve eased the burden from the amount the Best Buy card wouldn’t cover.
Now I’ve never used a Visa gift card. So it’s only natural that the only time I do try to use one is the 40 minute window when their system was down. I thought I was given a dud
