Let me show how historically great Andruw Jones is.

Preventing a hit is just as important as creating one. Sabermetric experts point out that he saved a hit about every 7 games of his career. With 2,100 games, that is 300 hits.

Add those on to his batting average, and his average is now .296

His OBP gets bumped up to .374

His SLG% gets bumped up to .530

And this ISN”T accounting for doubles, triples, and homers he may have saved.

Don’t you think an exactly average defensive center fielder with a .296/.374/.530 line and 420 homers deserves HOF consideration?

Again, those numbers are a conservative estimation because only singles are used and his defense is being nuetralized to average to accurately represent his net value.

I agree that he deserves to have his number retired with no question. As for the Hall, think he is borderline right now if that. more low BA years are gonna kill him

MIGHT be some valid, but the problem for Jones is that only a small percentage of current voters are into that stuff at all, most are not and will ignore it for more traditional evaluations

noleeee- illiness, indeed. You could add on to Mays (who IMO was as good if not better than AJ – and I saw them both) and Mantle that way, too, pushing Andruw just as far down the list as he is now.

Given that any HOF candidate has list of impressive stats, there is still a major question to answer with those casting ballots. Furman Bisher may have said it best when he said he always asked himself: Did the player in question DOMINATE the era during which he played? You could easily say yes in making the case for Dale Murphy, The Big Three, Bobby Cox, etc. Andruw Jones? I don’t think so. His “era” was short-lived by HOF standards and to compare him with the likes of Mickey Mantle is laughable.

as for domination of an era,it is one thing I look at but Murphy pretty much did, he has lots of black and grey ink, Chipper pretty much did not, he has little of it at all. but Chipper is going in and Murph never came even remotely close to being elected

brian

March 27th, 2012
6:46 pm

Andruw Jones will not make the Hall due to his rapid decline. Everyone voting will remember the huge contract from the Dodgers and the utter flop he was after his disasterous year with the Braves. He has since then been a platoon player. Players who spend many years as a platoon player do not belong in the Hall of Fame especially after hitting near the Mendoza line with a $18 million/year contract

noleee

March 27th, 2012
6:48 pm

Mantle was a great defender who was hampered by bad legs his entire career so no he wasn’t as good as Jones though it would have been a lot closer if the Mick had wheels

Lew

March 27th, 2012
6:48 pm

Mantle was no slouch in center, either and hit over 100 more HR than Andruw, had about 300 more RBI than Andruw and – wait for it – had Three MVP Awards. Andruw is just NOT in that conversation. Sorry.

brian

March 27th, 2012
6:49 pm

if Murph cannot get in with his numbers in the pre-steroid era while playing on much worse teams with no lineup protection, not to mention his back to back MVP awards, Andruw Jones should not get close to the Hall

Murph was a mega star for what 6 out of 8 years and pretty much avg for the balance of his career.. I think his career WAR (that hated metric) is way down there for HOF (sub 50??)

TheJonesBoys

Jones isn’t close to Mantle overall, I agree.

I’d even rate Mantle over DiMaggio, as a hitter.

iopbrave

March 27th, 2012
6:55 pm

Mantle tore up his knee early in his career- DiMaggio was still playing. I always thought Andruw in his heyday was better than Chipper . Better fielder, runner, arm, more power. I guess he still has all that on Chip. Andruw has always looked like a kid that was having fun out there. Don’t get me wrong Chip is / was a Hell of a player and is headed to the Hall- hopefully he can last thru this season in one piece and not be too crippled the rest of his life.

CB

March 27th, 2012
6:55 pm

Andruw was a great defensive CF but does not match up to Mantle offensively. In a lot of ways, barring injuries and self abuse, Mantle would have matched up career wise to the greatest.

I never thought of AJ as being in Chipper’s league as a player, he was a better defender and had more raw power, but as for the other things you mention I disagree and i watched them both come up every year. B4 he hurt his knee Chipper was fast as greased lightning, even with the hurt knee he was a better baserunner than Druw ever was, Better hitter by far all around. their arms were pretty much a wash though its hard to compare infield/outfield arms.

Wow. My over-and-under on Chipper was that he’d at least make it out of ST before he broke down. I say, give him half the season off, let him get uber-healthy, and let’s see what the second half brings. In the meantime, we need a LF’er like a drownign man needs a lifesaver.

Andruw played a very short CF – taking away flares to left and right center and he could still get to the fence. His talent was unique. He just ALWAYS made the right first step as soon as the ball was hit. He did not rely on speed to cover ground as much as he was purely instinctual. I don’t think I ever saw him start one way, stop and switch direction. He some weird bird like sense. He was born to track fly balls.

All he had to do was play out his 30s hitting .265 with 25HRs and 85 RBIs and he was a lock.

I think he gets in. But I don’t think he’s a first ballot. Did he dominate? In some ways he did. He played 11 seasons, every game with stellar defense EVERY game providing more power than most CFs. It was ok that he was a sloppy power hitter, because Chipper was so rock solid and disciplined in the 3 hole posting a career .400OBP.

Was he a disappointment? Even Mantle is on record on saying that the drank cost his some extra greatness.

Gonna try later to get on the Samantha Train (read last blog). Just sounds like fun.

Serious now: If you talk about A Jones in the HOF, what about Jim Rice. He was dominate in the late 70’s. A run producing machine.

What about Bernie Williams? What about Jack Morris?

There are several on the bubble. But A Jones gets the backing on this blog because he was a Brave. Let’s be real. There are several geat players on that bubble list.
