Call me a homer, but I am bullish on the Braves this year. especially if they acquire a LF. The Braves have the best bullpen in baseball. Their starting 5 are strong for the year – Hudson, Hanson, Jurrjens, Beachy, and Minor (with Medlen, Teheran, and Delgado waiting in the wings). The bench still needs work.

I do like the lineup listed above.

CF Bourn
LF Byrd
C McCann
2B Uggla
1B Freeman
3B Prado
RF Heyward
SS Pastornicky/Simmons

When Chipper returns we can put Prado in the 2nd Spot in LF and CHipper hitting 6th at 3B. Byrd can also spell Bourn and hit 1st when needed.

Byrd does seem like a good fit.

Where the heck is Dark Star, Fla.?

It is really hard to predict the NL East this year.
While the Phillies should be the favorite, they are getting OLD and injuries are piling up. Victorino, Howard, Utley & Rollins are all in the 30s. As are Cliff Lee & Roy Halladay.
Florida has made many changes but it’s hard to tell how substantial they are.
The Braves did basically nothing in the off-season to improve the club.
The Nats have a lot of exciting young players but is that enough?
The Mets? Well, they are the Mets and they will finish last.

Marlins will score a bunch of runs

You’d think they would have done that last year, but they didn’t. 625 runs last year, and all they added was speed. Not exactly a candidate team for 800 runs, even if Hanley rebounds to beast-mode.

You look at their lineup, and you do think they ought to be an offensive machine, but they really haven’t been.

if someone told me Heyward was going to hit .260/.293/.449/.742 w/ 29 HR this year (Frenchy’s 2006 numbers) I’d jump for joy.

I think this is interesting. OPS + for Frenchy in 2006 was 87 and for Heyward in 2011 was 95 even though Frenchy’s raw numbers were better. Just goes to show how important context is for these kind of stats.

17. Braves. I know this ranking seems harsh, but what have the Braves done lately to inspire anyone’s confidence? Their rotation is full of health questions — right-hander Tim Hudson is unlikely to return from back surgery before May 1, and third baseman Chipper Jones underwent his sixth knee surgery Monday. The Braves need right fielder Jason Heyward to regain his rookie form, or their offense again figures to be about as exciting as an infomercial.
