Was it such a bad move for Wren to sign Kawakami, Lowe and trade for Vazquez when all we have to show from the 2008 40 man roster is Tim Hudson, Jair Jurrjens and Peter Moylan? Those who continually ride Wren over those moves don’t realize how terrible the future looked in 08. Hudson was established but neither Moylan or JJ were.
The Braves went from 72 wins in 08 to 86 in 09. That is where the truth is.
Whoever it was that mentioned the Braves acquiring Vladdie or Soriano from the Cubs……Wren is not smart enough to know this team needs another *big bopper* in the lineup, so neither move would be made.
No on Vlad and no, no on Alphonso. Agree with someone above who noted Abreu’s declining stats past couple of years. NO, No to him, too. Wren needs to see what Sprull, Redmond and maybe a couple of other minor leaguers will bring. If he has to invade the “almost untouchables” to get a very good player, he needs to get a quality OF with power who has more “control” years than whoever we are giving up. We do not need a one or two year wonder. Hopefully, these are his guidestars.
“………And it ain’t that fun at 56 either! Wore myself out last Saturday digging up stumps and hauling off the last of the wind damage debris from the yard.

keyLargo: if your 7:21 comment was meant as a defense for Wren, I cannot engage such illogic. We can go back to those winter blogs and find where I was apoplectic over the Lowe signing. Also, history supported NOT signing a Japanese starter, as VERY few of them have been able to craft extended careers on this side of the Pacific. The McLouth trade was unforseeable, as much as we wanted to tar and feather the guy. What Wren did with Lowe and KK was unforgiveable. Better to have said “We are rebuilding” and saved the money. Instead, we falsely propped ourselves for an ‘09 run that never materialized and mortgaged ourselves out of the playoffs last year, and probably this year. Was it worth it for a one-and-done two seasons ago, where our hitting was so dreadful that it was a hollow WC berth? I say “NO!”, and call Wren a blithering idiot. Thanks to the Lowe and KK signings, we traded 14 stinkin’ wins in ‘09 for two, going on three seasons where this team’s pitching was playoff-worthy – WITHOUT LOWE OR KK – only to not have the money to buy the hitting that our mediocre farm system cannot produce (mediocre when it comes to positional player development). I hope we all enjoyed the garbage that was a 14 win upgrade from ‘08 to ‘09 – both non-playoff years. I surely forgot about it three years ago!!!

nolie – agree about the deadness…not sure what it is but I’ve never been so excited in January and its been a long time since I’ve had this little fire at the end of March
What’s up Braves fans? How about them Dodgers fetching $ 2 billion? Nobody’s happier than Fred Wilpon. Rising tides raising all boats and all. That should give him some more capital at his disposal. March has been a good month to my Mets. The Madoff mess behind them relatively cheaply, Santana looks healthy and now a record price for a fellow club. Hey, the Mets are likely looking at a bottom 2 finish at best but the climb back appears a litle less daunting then back in February – at least in my rose colored view. {:
I saw Scruggs at Crystal (Lake) Beach many, many years ago. He put on a good show.
I hadn’t thought about that place in a long time, had some wild times there. So I searched it and found a link to a thread with some history and photos from the fifties, nothing like it was when I went, damn cool. That lead me to girls my space page with a bunch of pics……….. I love the Internet

Yeah it’s fun finding old girlfriends. Of course I have no idea who this girl is, after my time there. Looks like they were up to the same things though………..
Good article Dave. I believe he is the greatest switch hitter of all time. The stats back him up. I also think he is slightly ahead of Mike Schmidt and George Brett as the greatest 3rd baseman of all time. Schmidt had more power, Brett had a better average. Chipper does both, average and power. Also his teams were more consistently better. Best ever at both!!
Wrong Anders: actually I am on the Reunion Committee plus I have the sad task of doing the memorials, so I have a legitimate reason to keep up with my classmates and I love it. Facebook has made that job a lot easier and more fun than Classmates.com, so I am a happy camper.
VJ: That’s understandable and there is prolly not many folks on this blog who have heard any of the Circle albums and I find that sad, because it is great timeless music.
It’s not that I would not appreciate his music- I love great banjo music (and great fiddle music) as much as the next person- it’s just not the type of music that you typically hear in Los Angeles
noleee: when I was in school, the jocks got all the girls, at least the hot ones, it seemed. I loved playing sports, but I had white-mans disease: too small and slow.
I love New York. VJ and I both have family in or near the city. We are actually hoping to make it back there in September when my boys play Syracuse at the Meadowlands…
cabravesfan- Have you ever walked over the Brooklyn Bridge? It’s a must do if you haven’t. Incredible view of downtown Manhattan. And now the Freedom Tower soars over everything in that area. Truly spectacular. I wa just standing at the foot of the tower yesterday. They’re doing a great job rebuilding that whole area after 9/11.
I have not. Our last trip was a short one- Friday-Monday…before that, I was there for 2 months between my sophomore & junior years in college, but I was working so didn’t have lots of free time…I have heard it is a must do for everyone- even folks who have lived there most of their lives…
cab: There used to be clubs in and around LA in the 60’s and 70’s that featured county rock where bands like the Eagles, Poco, Firefall, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and the Byrds got their start. I know that was before your time and it’s prolly not that way now, but magazines like Rolling Stone and Creem were always featuring the LA clubs, including all the rock clubs, too. Wish I had been there then, just like I wish I had been in Haight-Ashbury in the 60’s.
nolee- It’s really a spectacular building they’re putting up there. Plus the memorial is so well done. There’s about 4 or 5 other buildings going up all at the same time. I’m happy for the small busineses in that area because they really took a beating for a while down that way.
Yeah, there were a lot of clubs like that in LA back then- still many great, small, intimate ones up on Sunset, but that is a bit of a hike from where we are…and the good ones are either uber trendy, over crowded and charge too much or are super tiny, hard to find, over crowded and charge too much
(Also, I love the Eagles…not a huge Emmylou Harris fan…don’t know many Byrds songs, and can’t say I am that familiar with the rest-and yes…WAY before my time )
cabravesfan – You’d be surprised how many people who live here have never done it. I take anyone who visits across. Plus on the Brooklyn side (called Dumbo) there’s some great restaurants. If you and VJ don’t mind dropping about $200 for a special dinner for the two of you go to the River Cafe. great restaurant on the water directly across from downtown NYC. They use it for many movie scenes when they want the skyline in the background. Go after dark though for the full affect. Or you could eat somewhere else down there a little more reasonable and then pop in for a drink and the view. They always have a great piano player in the lounge but it’s kind of small so you can’t always get in.

few hundred? Them’s high class muggers your pals are running in to. Most would be happy with a $5 spot.

Anders-

That’s great. I’ll likely never get back up that way, but it’s good to hear that things have rebounded so well

kenhotlanta-
Yeah, there were a lot of clubs like that in LA back then- still many great, small, intimate ones up on Sunset, but that is a bit of a hike from where we are…and the good ones are either uber trendy, over crowded and charge too much or are super tiny, hard to find, over crowded and charge too much
(Also, I love the Eagles…not a huge Emmylou Harris fan…don’t know many Byrds songs, and can’t say I am that familiar with the rest-and yes…WAY before my time
)

cabravesfan – You’d be surprised how many people who live here have never done it.
OK- off my NYC Chamber of Commerce soap box I go.

I have not really listened to much of her music, but I generally like more rock type songs…
