Jack Cust To Sign With An NL Team

By Mike Axisa [March 27 at 8:15pm CST]

Jack Cust will sign a minor league contract with an NL team, reports Troy Renck of The Denver Post (on Twitter). That team is not the Rockies however, and we can also rule out the Astros since they released him this morning.

Cust, 33, signed a non-guaranteed Major League deal worth $600K with Houston in January. The one-year contract had also included a club option for 2013. Cust posted a .213/.344/.329 line with three home runs in 270 plate appearances for the Mariners in 2011, when he earned $2.5MM. However, the TWC Sports client averaged 28 homers and 103 walks with the A’s from 2007-09.

I have seen a total of 1.5 innings of ST and so cannot make any claims to projection. How are people looking? What will I see at Citi Field in a week-and-a-half? I think the team is built well, if people perform within some proximity of capability. But actually seeing, I know, gives a much clearer sense.

In a very competitive NL East, the Braves will finish second — I am going out on a limb here because as things stand now, I think the Braves are a 3rd or 4th place team. But, I am assuming that the Braves will spend some money or trade to get some offensive help. The Phillies are not going to be as good as prior year as their offense won’t be as good. So there could be just a one or two game difference between the Braves and Phillies after 162 games.

“We believe Jack Cust can be a guy who could easily duplicate his numbers prior to last year. Power guy and a vetran presence for our younger players. He fills a possible need for our outfield, he’s great insurance. We’re excited to hae Jack on board. Plus, we now havetwo Jack’s on the squad. How many other teams can say that. The original deal (not sure if it was NewsCorp or McCourt) allowed the stadium and the lots to be dealt with as separate entities- and the bankruptcy court allowed McCourt to sell them (or keep the lots) separately…so he will still own the land the parking is located on, even as he sells the team and stadium…supposedly he may try to develop the land (which, of course, would totally screw the team and fans, but since he clearly has never cared about either, it’s not a shock)

The Dodgers will now be the next big spenders with this group. This another way the Braves TV Deal is hurting them. The price paid for the Dodgers was due a lot to the fact that the Ownership Group will get it all back in the new Deal this season. Scott Boras is already sending his 2013 Free Agent Resumes to them. The Braves franchise will never be as valuable with the 25 year TV Deal they have in place, which means the fans could be stuck with this ownership for quite some time and have to watch as teams like the Nationals and Astros get huge TV Deals and start becoming more relevant than the Braves. Agents won’t even call the Braves for an offer on Free Agents because their Clients won’t want to be here. The future looks bleak for fans of the Braves because of the TV revenues the other teams will be receiving while the Braves get nothing.

Dodgers TV deal worth at least $4.0 billion over 20 years. Padres new deal worth $75.0 mil per year. The Astros are working with Comcast on a joint deal with the Rockets that will give them $60.0 mil per year. Nats are working on a re-do with MASN that will more than double their take to approx. $60 mil per year. And the Phils are in preliminary discussions with Comcast, as their deal expires in 2015. TV executives and some agents, including Scott Boras figure their new deal will come in at a whopping $5.0 billion over 20 years.

BRAVES win, BRAVES win, BRAVES win……..oh yeah, forgot. It’s still ST. Just watched the 6:00 a.m. telecast on MLBN.

JAIRO ASENCIO took no time off between last season, the off-season and this spring. His arm may be tired because he’s not getting the late movement on his fastball I normally have seen with him. Dude should have taken a month off. No more options. Last shot to make the BRAVES in the seventh slot. I would put him on the roster, and shut him down for two weeks starting now.

Maybe send GEARRIN back to GWINNETT. Problem is YOHAN FLANDE is the only other suspect to plug in the sixth slot if he goes out. CORY didn’t exactly step it up. Bad outing. His mantra lately, two good outings, followed by one great, then one bad. I’m assuming this was the latter because he has pitched well at other times this spring. He doesn’t look smooth with that side-arm delivery like last year. Doesn’t look like he’s getting a good break on his pitches. Both DOB and I pegged him for the pen, but I see why the BRAVES continue their search for that third lefty and a seventh man.

Lefty’s YOHAN FLANDE and JOSE LUGO are good AAAA pitchers though I think YOHAN inproved over last season, and might become servicable in ATLANTA sometime this upcoming season IF he steps it up another notch. I don’t think LUGO is ready at this point.

LH BOBBY FISH is on the shelf with some ailment I guess. I think he goes to FA rather than the 25-man. Worth a 50m gamble. Don’t forget sports fans, FISH is a two-time Rule 5′er.

Crazy – Nationwide has nothing to do with a local deal, I go to Braves’ games in other cities (Boston, Toronto, Montreal when they still had the Expos) and realize how well the Braves draw on the road, but that won’t translate to a local deal.

And stop and loook at this in a different light. San Diego signed a $70 mil a year deal? Then why is their payroll around $45 mil? Something is just NOT adding up.
