Juan – you pay way too much attention to ST numbers. EOF had a 9.31ERA in ST 2009, players hit .404 off of him. That was 9.2 IP
Reg Season 2009 for EOF – 3.04ERA in 78IP .248BAA 1.21WHIP
Spring Training numbers mean absolutely nothing.
March 23rd, 20123:00 pm
Jose Yepez replaces McCann…
Murphy with an infield single, backhanded by Uggla…
March 23rd, 2012
I LOVE DAN UGGLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who doesn’t love Dan Uggla? His name is Dan Uggla!
March 23rd, 20123:01 pm
DP – 3-6-3!
Nice job by Hinske…
March 23rd, 20123:02 pm
March 23rd, 20123:04 pm
Fly to right – Constanza has it – to the bottom of the 6th…
I’m apparently getting pretty good at calling Dan Uggla homers.
Juan – you pay way too much attention to ST numbers
How you evaluated Player on ST?….by the Number no!….Varvaro came out for a few time and give up runs….Todd Redmond has a better ST that this guy.
March 23rd, 20123:07 pm
Batista still pitching – Constanza with 1-2 count…
And a K for Georgie…
March 23rd, 20123:09 pm
Georgia/Parraz/Dodge…..I take Parraz for the 5th outfield
March 23rd, 20123:10 pm
Andrelton Simmons draws the first Braves’ walk of the day…
Matt Diaz to bat for Flande – runner goes, easy steal for Simmons…
March 23rd, 20123:11 pm
1-0 pitch grounded foul…
Loosing Managar = Loosing Record
I keep sayin this but Chiper needed 2 retrie along time a go. He is shelfish for staying on so long. He hurt the devlopment of N E young palyers and he hurt the Braves.
Way 2 go Chipper Shelfish Jones!
March 23rd, 20123:12 pm
Grounded to the pitcher, Simmons advances on the out…
Shellfish… that’s awesome.
Braves Marketing Dept
It’s a huge sigh of relief to know that Chipper has actually given us a full season’s notice that he is retiring. We know how hard it is to explain to fans that 13 million will be coming off the payroll but we really won’t have any more money to spend on payroll. It’s hard work and takes lots of time to make up the numbers to show the fans that there will be no free agents coming to the Braves to pick up the slack because although Chippers salary is not longer being paid… we really don’t have any money to spend. Remember the Javy Vazquez fiasco when we moved all that salary to the Yankees but had no extra salary to spend on payroll? Remember we picked up Melky and that guy who is out with TJ surgery?
We’ll figure out how to sell it. We always do. If the fans don’t like it, we’ll just add another discount hotdog section to the Ted and all will be well!
March 23rd, 20123:13 pm
Thinking outside the box, I would consider moving Uggla to 3B in 2013. That would allow Pastornicky to move to 2B & Simmons at SS. Improved speed and defense up the middle and power at 3B.
… and how did Chipper continuing to play affect players in New England??
That just doesn’t make any sense.
2-1 on Bourn – EOF up in the bullpen…
March 23rd, 20123:14 pm
Ball inside – DOUBLE, RBI!!!
Juan – Last spring was terrible for Varvaro, too, yet he had a very good season for the Braves and may be a main reason that OVentbrel still have arms attached because of the innings he pitched late in the season.
March 23rd, 20123:15 pm
Ball gets by Thole (WP), Bourn to 3rd…
1-1 on Prado…
March 23rd, 20123:16 pm
MARTEEEEENNN – TRIPLE!!!!!!!
Bourn manages to score from 3rd on the triple – 8-4…
March 23rd, 20123:17 pm
Prado replaced by Jordan Parraz…
What do you base this on? His statistics last year put him in the top 5 (top 3 in some categories) for 3rd basemen. He is past his prime for sure, but still does a lot of things well.
Marteeen is going to have another All-Star Season!
Yepez – just misses a double outside the foul line…
March 23rd, 20123:18 pm
9 hits for the Braves, 7 of which have been for extra bases… that’s what we’ve needed.
Could it be that… I mean is it possible… that the Braves are putting some things together towards the end of ST and will carry it into the regular season?
Grounded to Murphy to end the inning – 8-4 Braves after 6 innings…
March 23rd, 20123:20 pm
Shocking concept. Unheard of in the major leagues, prior to this moment.
March 23rd, 20123:21 pm
Hinske flips to O’Flaherty for the first out…
Enquiring Minds Want to Know
I think I’d want to see Uggla make that long throw from 3rd a few times before I invested much thought there. Many times 2nd basemen play that position for a reason- the short throw. Uggla’s reluctance to change position when he came here makes me think he doesn’t have much confidence in his arm.
March 23rd, 20123:22 pm
Vinny Rottino deep fly to center – Luis Durango with the catch…
March 23rd, 20123:24 pm
Cedeno grounds to Simmons – good inning for EOF…
Braves lead remains 8-4, middle of the 7th…
March 23rd, 20123:25 pm
I know… I felt silly typing it, but I just had to get it out there.
March 23rd, 20123:26 pm
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
#Braves 1B Freddie Freeman day-to-day with soft tissue contusion on left hand. Hit by pitch in fourth inning.
Herrera in to pitch…
March 23rd, 20123:27 pm
Is it too early to say Thanks Venice Jim ? Didn’t want to wait till 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
March 23rd, 20123:28 pm
Don Sutton on At Bat App: Simmons throws a strike to first and we’re out of the inning.
Venice Jim on the blog: That’s soooooo 22 seconds ago.
Me: God, I hate those commercials.
Uggla singles to left – he is replaced by a pinch runner…
Sure thing, IHC…
March 23rd, 20123:29 pm
Valid point Enquiring Minds. I thought his reluctance to change positions was not wanting to play OF. So if he could make the throw, changing positions and stay an infielder should not be an issue for him. I believe he can be a productive hitter through his contract with Braves but cannot see him playing 2B at a high enough level towards the end of it.
6-4-3 DP for Hinske…
Line drive to 3rd for Sutton – inning over…
March 23rd, 20123:30 pm
Soft tissue contusion? Is saying “bruise” just not cool or something?
#81 Venice Jim in to run for Uggla. He does it all.
March 23rd, 20123:32 pm
Craig Kimbrel takes over…
March 23rd, 20123:34 pm
2-2 count on Loewen…swings and misses for the K…
March 23rd, 20123:35 pm
Can you imagine the standing O Chipper will get at the first home game as soon as the public address announcer goes …
“Now batting for the Braves … Number 10 … the third baseman ….”
Because no one – No. One. – will get to hear the words “Chipper Jones” boom through the loudspeakers because of the crowd. I grant that the noise generated will generate a shock wave large enough to register on the nearest Richter scale.
Wilfredo Tovar takes a strike – two balls – then two strikes for the K…
March 23rd, 20123:36 pm
Hits Dendecker on the leg…
March 23rd, 20123:37 pm
Tuiasosopo batting – runner out stealing – nice throw by Yepez…
We go to the bottom of the 8th, 8-4 Braves…
March 23rd, 20123:38 pm
I believe he can be a productive hitter through his contract with Braves but cannot see him playing 2B at a high enough level towards the end of it.
That implies that you think he’s playing at a “high enough level” at the moment.
And if his defense is weak at 2B, it’s likely to be even weaker at 3B. By a happy coincidence, Prado’s best defensive position is 3B, so one might as well go with what you got.
March 23rd, 20123:39 pm
Soft tissue contusion sure sounds better than broken hand.
The guy from MLB Gameday went to Bathroom and he got lost….
March 23rd, 20123:41 pm
If Chipper hit .400, had 150 RBIs,70 HRs, recovered the chalice used by Christ at the Last Supper, won the Nobel Peace prize and found a cure for all cancers–there would still be idiots bashing him.
Long fly out …Simmons batting…
“what, where, who?” – Not upset by anything you have to say. I just think you’re a total idiot. I was just commenting about how amazing it is that morons like you ever learned write, much less use a computer. You should be very proud.
Simmons hit on the shin…
March 23rd, 20123:42 pm
Hello everyone! With Chipper retiring next season. I would start with the Terd at 3rd,and Keep Prado LF.
I thought Samoans only played football. Maybe he’s not Samoan, I guess. Dunno.
March 23rd, 20123:43 pm
You wouldn’t happen to be Matt Lane, the ex-DBT/Lot Lizards drummer who used to post on here a few years ago would you?
Yes, the same one.
scoots – That’s always amazed me – that people actually believe that a player who is less than stellar at their norma, everyday position, will somehow be transformed into a defensive wizard if they move to somewhere completely unfamiliar.
Let’s move Uggla to third and McCann to left where they will certainly win Gold Gloves..
“Bourn manages to score from 3rd on the triple – 8-4…”
In the Terd we trust for next year!He will have a good Rookie Year.
Josh Wilson doubles, Simmons scores…
March 23rd, 20123:44 pm
Durango grounds to first…
March 23rd, 20123:45 pm
Ward – There will certainly be a contingent that will agree with that assessment – probably because they think Liberty Media will pocket the money coming off the books.
there would still be idiots bashing him.
Yeah, but you got to look for the upside: having once read such a post, you know you can safely (and happily) scroll past any future posts from the author. Doing so not only will keep you in an amiable mood, but will reduce the amount of time it takes to create said condition. Win-win..
I would love to see a captain’s C on Chipper’s jersey this year.
March 23rd, 20123:46 pm
Sure Chipper can do all that Fransworthy. But can he lower the price of gas? Then maybe the bashers would give it a rest.
March 23rd, 20123:47 pm
Fly to right ends the 8th with the Braves leading 9-4…
March 23rd, 20123:48 pm
I can see that Sim will be excellent defensively, not sure what it is you are seeing that makes you sure he will be a hitter though, and if he caint hit he aint gonna be a star
March 23rd, 20123:50 pm
Jairo Asencio to pitch the ninth…
ncscoots, Ugglas defense was better last year than I expected but even I admit it is not in the upper half of those performing that task at the MLB level. At some point he will have to switch positions or be a DH in the AL. Come to think of it there has been talk of adding the DH in the NL. So that could be problem solved.
Lew- With the Braves Farm,so deep, who cares about free agency next year.
MLB Gameday is back. Nice to put faces to Jim’s pbp.
And he fans Tuiasosopo…
March 23rd, 20123:51 pm
Too bad the Braves only play the Mets 18 times. At least a dozen more games with them would do wonders for the “W” column.
Cool. I was listening to y’all playing Louisiana 1927 on archive.org (a show from 1995) the other day and I was wondering why we haven’t seen you on the blog lately. Good to see you back.
Cory Vaughan line drive, good play by Simmons…
March 23rd, 20123:52 pm
Asencio gets grounder to 2nd…
And if his defense is weak at 2B, it’s likely to be even weaker at 3B….scoots
maybe, but not necessarily. different skills come into play. need quicker reactions at third but less real range. I think it would mostly depend on arm strength
March 23rd, 20123:54 pm
Ward – So deep? Yes, it is in pitching, but – at least to this point – Wren seems unwilling to part with pitching. We’re not so deep in outfield prospects, though and that’s where we’ll need to fill open space. Unless players who have been moved to the outfield such as Lipka surface as viable options, Free Agency or trade is the only other way to fill those needs.
It can certainly be accomplished if LM lets Frank Wren spend the money coming off the books – and they should – but there will be a fairly large group of fans who will neever believe that contention until it actually happens.
March 23rd, 20123:56 pm
Looking at Uggla, one thought would NOT likely be “His arm looks weak”.
March 23rd, 20123:57 pm
At some point he will have to switch positions or be a DH in the AL
My guess is that someone has been saying that about Uggla since he was a Rule V pick. Heck, for that matter, that someone might have been me, LOL.
The one good thing about being average defensively is that he is unlikely to just suddenly become terrible. He doesn’t have a big cliff of ability to fall from. He’s likely to be serviceable with the glove for a few more years, and, as long as his bat plays, he’ll probably be OK there. And if his defense does take a turn for the truly awful, his contract and bat will probably still be movable.
I guess that’s a long way of saying that I’m not all that worried about Uggla and defense.
March 23rd, 20123:58 pm
Uggly is a long long way from average defensively
March 23rd, 20124:00 pm
need quicker reactions at third but less real range
When I watch him, I don’t get the sense that he has the quicks or the hands for 3B. He goes hard to everything and gives up on nothing, you have to give him that, though.
appearances can be deceiving there Lew, bulk muscle is not what make a strong throwing arm and in fact many heavily muscled guys are weak throwers. It is all about the whip and flexibility which too much muscle can hinder
Met R Best
Hello boys! I just thought I’d give all of you a chance to welcome me back for the 2012 season.
