Juan – you pay way too much attention to ST numbers. EOF had a 9.31ERA in ST 2009, players hit .404 off of him. That was 9.2 IP
Reg Season 2009 for EOF – 3.04ERA in 78IP .248BAA 1.21WHIP
Spring Training numbers mean absolutely nothing.

Internal Memo:
It’s a huge sigh of relief to know that Chipper has actually given us a full season’s notice that he is retiring. We know how hard it is to explain to fans that 13 million will be coming off the payroll but we really won’t have any more money to spend on payroll. It’s hard work and takes lots of time to make up the numbers to show the fans that there will be no free agents coming to the Braves to pick up the slack because although Chippers salary is not longer being paid… we really don’t have any money to spend. Remember the Javy Vazquez fiasco when we moved all that salary to the Yankees but had no extra salary to spend on payroll? Remember we picked up Melky and that guy who is out with TJ surgery?
We’ll figure out how to sell it. We always do. If the fans don’t like it, we’ll just add another discount hotdog section to the Ted and all will be well!

Thinking outside the box, I would consider moving Uggla to 3B in 2013. That would allow Pastornicky to move to 2B & Simmons at SS. Improved speed and defense up the middle and power at 3B.

Juan – Last spring was terrible for Varvaro, too, yet he had a very good season for the Braves and may be a main reason that OVentbrel still have arms attached because of the innings he pitched late in the season.

What do you base this on? His statistics last year put him in the top 5 (top 3 in some categories) for 3rd basemen. He is past his prime for sure, but still does a lot of things well.

I think I’d want to see Uggla make that long throw from 3rd a few times before I invested much thought there. Many times 2nd basemen play that position for a reason- the short throw. Uggla’s reluctance to change position when he came here makes me think he doesn’t have much confidence in his arm.

Valid point Enquiring Minds. I thought his reluctance to change positions was not wanting to play OF. So if he could make the throw, changing positions and stay an infielder should not be an issue for him. I believe he can be a productive hitter through his contract with Braves but cannot see him playing 2B at a high enough level towards the end of it.

That implies that you think he’s playing at a “high enough level” at the moment.
And if his defense is weak at 2B, it’s likely to be even weaker at 3B. By a happy coincidence, Prado’s best defensive position is 3B, so one might as well go with what you got.

ncscoots, Ugglas defense was better last year than I expected but even I admit it is not in the upper half of those performing that task at the MLB level. At some point he will have to switch positions or be a DH in the AL. Come to think of it there has been talk of adding the DH in the NL. So that could be problem solved.

Ward – So deep? Yes, it is in pitching, but – at least to this point – Wren seems unwilling to part with pitching. We’re not so deep in outfield prospects, though and that’s where we’ll need to fill open space. Unless players who have been moved to the outfield such as Lipka surface as viable options, Free Agency or trade is the only other way to fill those needs.
It can certainly be accomplished if LM lets Frank Wren spend the money coming off the books – and they should – but there will be a fairly large group of fans who will neever believe that contention until it actually happens.

My guess is that someone has been saying that about Uggla since he was a Rule V pick. Heck, for that matter, that someone might have been me, LOL.
The one good thing about being average defensively is that he is unlikely to just suddenly become terrible. He doesn’t have a big cliff of ability to fall from. He’s likely to be serviceable with the glove for a few more years, and, as long as his bat plays, he’ll probably be OK there. And if his defense does take a turn for the truly awful, his contract and bat will probably still be movable.
I guess that’s a long way of saying that I’m not all that worried about Uggla and defense.

When I watch him, I don’t get the sense that he has the quicks or the hands for 3B. He goes hard to everything and gives up on nothing, you have to give him that, though.

appearances can be deceiving there Lew, bulk muscle is not what make a strong throwing arm and in fact many heavily muscled guys are weak throwers. It is all about the whip and flexibility which too much muscle can hinder
