Seems like iliketacos is the 40 year who lives in his mom’s basement that Chipper awhile ago say could kiss his backside. While he may not have been Brooks Robinson at 3B, he sure as heck wasn’t a butcher at third. Name one active 3B who can do the off-balance barehanded throw to 1B on a slow grounder or bunt. Chipper did more than enough to man the hot corner for almost two decades.

Ha, I can top that…Chipper is the worst player in the history of baseball…no, make that any sport, played on any planet in this universe, and any other bubble universe that was created during the big bang, and any other big bang that has ever occurred or ever will occur. So there.

“Because you are on a blog celebrating the man. If you don’t like that fact, then get the heck off the blog. I really, really hope that on the day you announce your retirement at your “24 year” job that some heckler doesn’t show up to talk about how you sucked at what you did. No, scratch that, I hope they do.”

I think the Braves should make Chipper the Captain for this year and put a “C” on his jersey as a fitting tribute to his many contributions to the team. I know the Braves don’t do the Captain thing but maybe if enough of the fans supported the idea they would relent. Who knows it might even serve as a motivation for the team and I am fearful that they are going to need all the help that they can get this year!! How about a little support DOB and fellow bloggers!!!

I would agree Chipper is the greatest Atlanta Brave ever over his entire career. Hank Aaron is the greatest Brave ever (period and close the book!) and Dale Murphy (1982 thru 1987) and Greg Maddux (1993 thru 2002) may have had more dominating–but briefer–periods. But Chipper’s consistent production over the long haul is unmatched I believe.

That would demean the entire concept of a captain. That’s not something that you bestow like some honorary Oscar for a body of work. If Chipper needed embroidery on his uni to lead this team, he would have been wearing it a long time ago; he doesn’t, and hasn’t. I know your idea is meant to honor the guy, but there are plenty of other, more appropriate ways to do that.

when you compare players who have large differences in number of at bats, counting totals are silly to use. of course the guy with 50% more chances is gonna have much higher totals. you must use percentages like BA, OBP, OPS etc. Chipper blows Rose away in the last two and even has a better BA right now. Rose was the king of plate appearances. He stayed healthy and he hit at the head of the order.
He was a very good all around player and he always hustled but the only thing that puts him near an elite hitting level is his number of hits. There are over a 100 guys with higher career BA, and if any of them had come near his at bats, they would have had more hits.
It’s not in me to claim that longevity is the main component of greatness…..and none of it has anything top do with his indiscretions or his punishment.

On the best ATL Brave debate, there would have to be some strong consideration for Smoltz in the argument. I wouldn’t really count his last year after leaving the Braves, whereas Maddux was only here half his career and Glavine left for several years. Smoltz was here through it all from worst to first and was one of the main reasons for worst to first, and he was here through the 14 division championships. I would say he had more of a post season impact than Chipper too. (I don’t know off the top of my head but I believe Smoltz holds some post season records for wins, maybe tied with Andy Pettite on some)

And nothing against Chipper either by the way, to me all the accolades and those that would argue for him have very valid points. I also agree with a couple of posters about Murphy, but his streak of about 6 or 7 dominate years not like Smoltz or Chipper. I can also see the argument for Niekro being in the debate too, but it’s hard to argue against the championships Smoltz or Chipper contributed to.
