Updated: Hanson gets start vs. Nats

Vivlamore reporting from Viera, Florida where the Braves take on the Nationals in a 1:05 p.m. start.

Tommy Hanson will make his third appearance of the spring, after having the start of his spring delayed by a concussion. He is 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA, after working three innings against the Astros Friday. The right-hander had his initial appearance cut short by rain after only one inning. Hanson, who is working on a new hitch-free delivery, is scheduled to pitch four innings today, although manager Fredi Gonzalez said before the game he could go five innings if he has a low pitch count.

Last season Hanson went 10-4 with a 2.44 ERA and .190 opponents’ average in 17 starts before the All-Star break. Then the shoulder went from merely nagging to aching, and he was 1-3 with an 8.10 ERA in five starts after the break.

He didn’t pitch again after Aug. 6 after being  diagnosed with a small rotator cuff tear.

UPDATE: Hanson pitched four innings. He have up one hit, one unearned run and one walk. He struck out two and hit two batters. He threw 68 pitches, 39 for strikes.

Hanson will be followed by LH Yohan Flande, RH Anthony Varvaro, RH Adam Russell and RH Jairo Asensio.

Left-hander John Lannan will start for the Nationals.

LINEUP:

1. Michael Bourn, CF

2. Andrelton Simmons, SS

3. Brian McCann, C

4. Dan Uggla, 2B

5. Freddie Freeman, 1B

6. Jason Heyward, RF

7. Jordan Parraz, LF

8. Drew Sutton, 3B

9. Tommy Hanson, P

UP NEXT: The Braves will host the Marlins tomorrow at Disney. Brandon Beachy will start. He will be followed by RH Eric O’Flaherty, RH Cory Gearrin, RH Jairo Asencio and LH Dusty Hughes.

ODDITY: Sitting atop the lights in right-center field at Space Coast Stadium is a special spectator. A great horned owl has made a nest on the light pole. Officials can not do anything about the bird because it is federally protected.

LEAD OFF LUNCHEON: Fans can enjoy lunch alongside current Braves players, coaches, alumni and executives as the team celebrates the start of the 2012 campaign with the Lead Off Luncheon on Tuesday, April 17th at the 755 Club at Turner Field. There will be a moderated Q & A session with several Braves. A limited number of individual tickets are available for $100 and tables for 10 begin at $750.  Fans can call 404-494-1020 to purchase tickets and request more information.

Bill, looks like the candidates for the (likely 5) position-players backups are: Ross, Hinske, Diaz, Sutton, Durango, Parraz, Constanza, and Jack Wilson. Of those, Ross, Hinske, and Diaz are probably locks, even though none of the three are hitting well in ST. Wilson looks unlikely to be healed, Constanza has not hit in ST. Durango, Sutton, and Parraz have all hit well; Parraz has had some defensive issues. I really like Sutton, he is a switch-hitter, hit .315 last year for the Red Sox, and can play every position except C and CF.

Why are you people so negative? It’s ST. Let’s at least be positive about our team until they play a few regular season games…
Texas (you know, that AL team that went to the world series) has the same number of wins and one fewer loss than the Braves. And Oakland (74-88 last year) is 14-4. Spring Training is a place for guys to get ready not win games. Let the guys get ready, and don’t read too much into ST W-L ratio.

Would have to see the Braves fourth in NLEast as one article had them as a projection. Marlins and Nats are improving steadily

it is just training games….. everyone’s record gets reset after march… no need to panic….. lets see how the record is mid-May..
that being said… Freddi needs to try-out more aggressiveness in hitting and base running while we have this opportunity…hit and run, squeeze, steal, double steal?, everyone bunting, will need to get more aggressive on offense to get some runs across the plate
