McCann’s first HR is Braves’ lone extra-base hit

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Brian McCann’s leadoff homer in the seventh inning of Monday’s 4-3 loss to the Cardinals was the first home run and second extra-base hit of the spring for the Braves catcher.

McCann has hit .281 (9-for-32) with four RBIs. He went deep off Cardinals right-hander Mitchell Boggs.

The first 12 Braves went down in order against Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn before Dan Uggla’s leadoff single in the fifth inning. McCann’s homer was the only extra-base hit for the Braves, who had seven singles.

Awaiting Vizcaino report

Rookie reliever Arodys Vizcaino flew to Pensacola, Fla., to have his injured right elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews on Monday afternoon. The Braves weren’t expected to provide an update on the hard-throwing right-hander until Tuesday morning.

Jurrjens vs. Verlander

Jair Jurrjens makes his fourth start Tuesday when the Braves travel to Lakeland, Fla., to face the Tigers and Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. Craig Kimbrel is among the Braves’ planned relievers.

Etc.

Freddie Freeman went 2-for-4 to lift his his average from .162 to .195. He still doesn’t have an extra-base hit in 41 at-bats…. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina was 2-for-4 with two doubles and has a .481 average.

Dear Chipper Jones,

Please retire so our broke team can afford to pay for an elite hitter who will EARN $14,000,000.00 by at least playing 150+ games.

You are a millionaire and sure fire HOF. Stop tarnishing your career. Dude you can’t make it through ST! Sore thighs?! Really? Really?!

If you don’t retire, at least entertain us and wear a ski mask this year as you rob the team and fans.

Sincerely

- A fan.

P.S – Your knees are going to fall off and you are going to look crazy as hell trying to climb up a tree stand without knee caps.

You have to go with the best player in the spring. If things progress the way that they are, then Simmons would or should get the job. They have said all along that if their shortstop plays solid defense, that is all that they are concerned about. Anything average or above with the bat will be a bonus. Pastornicky doesn’t appear solid in either. I think that Simmons should get the opening gig at short. If he struggles, you will see Wilson get some starts and a trade might transpire afterwards. The Braves have a few mill to spend on immediate needs if necessary to fill any glaring needs. As far as our regulars go, they are starting to get their hits in. The Braves filled their immediate need this offseason by acquiring a proven hitting coach. Not only did they get one, but a assistant as well. During Walker’s tenure at Chicago (8 years), the White Sox was 3rd in homers, and in the top 5 in runs scored. He has a World Series ring to go with his resume. People say that he destroyed Adam Dunn and screwed him up. It takes time for players to trust and believe in a coach. Was there a personality clash? Who knows, but look at players that came out of Chicago, Konerko, Thomas, Quentin. Konerko credits his hitting success to Walker. The Braves took Parrish on high recommendations from other people, he’s a worker, blah, blah, blah, and look what it got us. I can fully understand if a player or two slumps, but the whole team???? Parrish was in way over his head and always told his players to be aggressive. That and his lack of communicating killed the braves last year. How many times did you see players going to parrish during pregame batting practice? None. What about during the games? None. Did anyone once see Parrish at the top step watching his players during an at bat during a game? You guessed it folks, never. This team is not a .243 hitting team. You can look at everybody up and down the lineup and check the yearly stats, everybody had taken a major hit in every major catorgory. There was not 1 braves player that had more than 70 walks last year! Chipper led the team in walks, and I believe that he had 63 or 65 walks. People have to realize that as badly as they performed offensively last year, they still won 89 games and hit in the .240’s. This season there will be an upgrade overall in the lineup as far as the offense goes. As to how much better they will perform will remain to be seen, and if the pitching can be anywhere close as to what they were last year, there shouldn’t be much doubt as to why they cannot win 95+ games.

Coach

March 19th, 2012
11:03 pm

As much as I like Chipper, $14 million is a alot for a guy that will be lucky to play 120 games this year. Like he had done so in the past, he could restructure his contract and cut $4 mill and have that deferred after he retires from baseball, but his hooter waitress of a wife might not like that. Maybe he can endorse a company that makes flexible knee braces, he can pick up a few cons there. I can see Chipper doing an icy hot commercial, maybe Aleve? He could probably get endorsements from Browning, Realtree or Mossy Oak to pad his wallet. We all know that he is good with all of the poachers.

In sports everything goes in cycles Atlanta appears to be on a downward turn right now, hopefully with a move here and there it can get back on an upswing. But come on some of you all make comments about players, coaches and administration that I promise, you would not have the guts to say to their face. Pitching and defense, pitching and defense, blah, blah, blah. I prefer Hitting, hitting, hitting and pitching. If the score is 12-1, folks my good southern brethren, who cares about defense. GM Wrenn send your scouts to find the Pitchers, but daggum it send the scouts to find the finest hitters in the land also. Come on man. We can not hit, that puts pressure on our pitchers and our defense. One error, we lose. One homer given up, we lose. See my point.

Homerx,

You need defense when you face pitchers and teams that won’t give up 12 runs and won’t be held to one run. Do you not remember Brooks Conrad’s defense costing us in the playoffs 2 years ago? Having only one or two of pitching, hitting and defense doesn’t do it. You have to have a good balance. At the very least, strong pitching and defense with ok offense.

I am still struggling with the fact the braves are currently 2nd to last place in the Grapefruit league. They are 5-12 with a .294 winning avg. and have more losses than the last place NY Mets. I understand that spring training is for stretching the arms, working on new pitches and swings and getting into shape. I would feel better about this team if they were a .500 team and doing this things especially after last September when the team winning average was .307.

But Spring Training was vied differently then……..LOL

Bob Uecker is right on the money when he described how important Spring Training is in baseball. In fact, it was his best moment. He writes……. “The highlight of my career? In ‘67 with St. Louis, I walked with the bases loaded to drive in the winning run in an inter-squad game in spring training.”

Absolutely, It almost happened this time. Her problem is that she is too trusting. She actually is attracted to all men but she needs to find the right guy and know how to tell the difference. There comes a point whether it is spring or not when you see a pitcher does not have it and say let me get him out of there.. I think spring training stats are not always the best barometer to figure things out, but I have to admit that this spring line does give me alarm: JJ, 13 ip, 26 hits, 16 runs and a 10.13 ERA. Would you like to have more runs yes, but that stat line is problematic. There seems to be a problem somewere.

IF he plays 120 games it will be a miracle. If he gets 80 RBI’s it will be a miracle. If he hits 20 HR’s it will be a miracle. If he hits 250 this year, it will be a miracle.
He’s tying up a lot of money folks. We could get a massive bat for his money.

We dont manufacture runs or even seem to get enough hits together to make a big inning. Now the Braves of old just use to get on base and wait for the 3 run homer, but we dont have the kind of power throughout our lineup like we use to. We have hitters who can hit homeruns but none of the really legit homerun hitters like Justice, McGriff, Gantt, Sheffield, etc… I still have to say this JJ start is sounding off the alarm that needs to be addressed. Also, is it just me or why do we keep running Chipper out there in the 3 hole? Love Chipper and all but right now he is not a 3 hole hitter.
