DAP – I don’t know if you saw the link haggard posted to Tom Boswell’s column on the Phillies, but it’s a worthwhile read (from Bos’s Washington perspective):
Thanks to haggard, scoots, ncgary, Coach, and Gil for the wonderful tributes to Furman Bisher.
That sports writers reunion picture made me recall if any of the bloggers here are big Nascar fans, you would do good to look up Bill Robinson and read some of his columns and stories on racing. He was almost as good a writer as Furman and his best work was writing about the Richard Petty/David Pearson battles. The man had a way with words that you would not expect to see in a racing writer.
I looked for a third time and I believe it is two.
The first two off days don’t come into play, else you’d have the 2 guy pitching on three days’ rest on the 11th, and they aren’t going to do that. You can skip the 5 with the off day on the 26th, but Hudson would have to be ready exactly on May 1 for the game against the Phightens. Even then, they might have the fill-in pitch that day, and have Hudson go the next.
Juan: The person in the hood is Michonne from the comics. Apparently she is a badass who has figured out how to control or use the walkers to her advantage. Not sure if she runs the Prison or if that is a separate storyline because I haven’t read the comics. They set up Season 3 real nicely.
Actually, the opening day starter would pitch on the 11th and that is all I have to say on the subject. Let the Braves figure it out. Wait a minute, that’s Fredi…..
DAP- The Phillies might well be looking at Polanco not starting the season either, with a finger injury. What firepower do they still have left? Pence, Victorino, Rollins and some role players at the end of their careers like Thome?
I think they should be worried – not necessartily of the Braves, but in general. The division has gotten deeper – they have not.
If they are smart, they keep Tebow and let him learn under Manning, use him in the Wild Cat, a little at wide out and running back and wait for Manning to take that hit that puts him out.
I know some people were posting yesterday that they hadn’t had a chance to watch the season finale for TWD so no spoilers from me but that was an awesome episode. Can’t wait for October and season 3.
Didn’t the Phillies have all sorts of injuries last year to Utley, Howard, etc? And, when those guys were on the DL, didn’t they somehow just keep on winning anyways?
While those guy being on the DL certainly doesn’t hurt the Braves, I wouldn’t get too excited about it. They seem to be a team who finds a way to win, no matter who is in the lineup. Their SP has a little something to do with that.

Murph – You should read the article that wqas linked to above. Howard is having serious problems. The stitches on the surgical repair of his ankle got infected – he’s still in a walking boot and from personal experience, he will come out of it with his leg half the size of the other – takes time to get the strength back from atrophied muscles and is no fun.
They don’t have Ibanez bat anymore. They just lost Dominic Brown again. They dumped Wilson Valdez who filled in well for Utley and Rollins and Polanco may also be out with hand issues. Their power now consists of Hunter Pence. Their offense will not be what it was.
Medlen just looks like a guy you are supposed to hit, like someone’s kid brother pitching, and then you find yourself on the way back to the dugout. Obviously Teheran and Delgado are more highly favored by the Braves org. and will be given every op. over Medlen, no matter how well Meds pitches. Heck, the Braves could let Meds start in April while Hanson is out and he would win, and then they could use him for trade, a viable SP for a bat. Better to get full potential for him than to become just a mop up, low leverage guy(as someone said). I could see Medlen starting and being a consistent winner. I know the Braves org. think they have budding superstars in Teheran and Delgado but I’m not seeing it. Be glad to be wrong.
CB – I haven’t but I saw a commercial for it during The Walking Dead yesterday and it looked interesting. I’ll have to see if I can catch up on old episodes and add it to my list.
Lee- I think trading Tebow is a mistake. Here is the quote:
“Peyton Manning has reportedly chosen his team and he will be the next quarterback of … the Denver Broncos. CBSSports.com’s Mike Freeman confirms that Manning’s pick is Denver and that a contract “is a formality” at this point.
Freeman also reports that the Broncos will attempt to trade Tim Tebow and “do not care” what they get for him.”
What is the reasoning behind not wanting Medlen to start? Seems to me he would be a better than average bottom of the rotation starter. From where I stand, I guess the biggest argument against him is that the other guys have such high ceilings.
lew What firepower do they still have left? Pence, Victorino, Rollins and some role players at the end of their careers like Thome?
their lineup inst completely pathetic with guys like ruiz, mayberry, wigginton, ect. its not great, thats for sure. but their pitching is so good, they can still win alot of ballgames.like i said though, its going to come alot tougher for them.
Lew, I know the Phillies are hurting and in some cases, hurting bad… but they’ll still find a way to win.
I just don’t think we can count on taking advantage of our easy April schedule and looking at the standings in May with the assumption that the Phillies will automatically be 5+ games out of first.
They’ll find a way to win. And no, I’m not being doom/gloom. I don’t really care what the Phillies do… if the Braves don’t win, it’s all moot anyways.

GTFO…Between this and Molyan and Medlen’s new twitter-fueled friendship with Jason Isbell, I believe there’s hope for this team, yet…musically speaking.
DAP and Murph – Yeah, I know and I’m not consigning the Phillies to Metshood, but they are NOT the powerhouse they were the past couple of years. Even the pitching is not as strong as last year. The end of their rotation is Blanton/Kendrick and they have to hope Worley remains anywhere near as strong as last year.
Losing Howard and Utley seriously depletes their power and Wigginton is not going to replace Howard’s bat. Without Polanco, they’re that much weaker.
I’m pretty sure they’ve come back to earth somewhat.
What Denver is doing is like dumping the faithful wife and mother of your children for the still sexy(but older) pin-up queen. This could get ugly in a hurry, especially if Peyton can’t deliver or stay healthy. Somebody could get egg on their face.
I’m glad you’re here as I have a friend with some general pain in both knees–probably arthritis related–and was wondering what your advice is on a supplement routine?
haggard – Glucosamine sulphate – 2000 MG daily. Get it at Wal Mart and forget the chondroitan along with it. Other than that, Super B Complex helps with nerve function and you can’t really take too much of it. Calcium can’t hurt, either.
Broncos fans are going to be highly upset if Manning gets injured early on and Tebow is gone.
Not so sure I’d take a chance on Manning for serious money or years. Could work out to be great, could work out to be one of the biggest mistakes they’ve ever made.
thanks guys – I would agree it would make much more sense to have Medlen take those irregular April starts and keep the young guys Teheran and Delgado on a regular schedule in AAA
haggard – Afraid there’s no magic elixer. Arthritis is going to win out over aanything you can take, but the Glucosamine does lubricate the joints pretty well and has made a good bit of difference for me and most others I know who take it. It will still hurt, but won’t deteriorate as quickly, but one way or another, old age gonna get you.
I thought of you a couple of days ago upon reading that Scully has scaled back his schedule just a bit more; he’ll no longer be doing Rockies games on the road.

Doesn’t that have something to do with cap space and signing bonuses?

haggard – Glucosamine sulphate – 2000 MG daily.

Thanks so much. Seems as if I remembered you swore by a “magic elixir” a while back and I’ll pass your recommendation along in a few minutes.

haggard – Afraid there’s no magic elixer.
